Syria is in the throes of revolution. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, and the death toll is rising, fast.

Trevor Knight is an engineer with the National Engineering and Mechanical Agency.

Kate Creed is the doctor paired to work with him on opening and operating a humanitarian camp in the war-torn country. She is also a witch.

Together, the two must work to overcome the problems they have with each other, and work to alleviate the suffering of countless thousands. But the war is about to get worse, and if they hope to make it out alive, the only thing they'll have to rely upon is each other.

Mr. Decker warned me you’d do this,” Kate said, stuffing her suitcase, as Knight did the same on his bed. “Our first full day in the country and you’re already causing trouble.”

“Only if we get caught,” Knight said, with a sardonic smile.

Trevor Knight is back!

Even if you aren’t familiar with the NEMA engineer who just can’t stay out of trouble, SYRIAN DANDER (the third in the TK series), is a still good place to start.

In this installment, Knight must team up with the insufferably opinionated (and my favorite) Kate Creed to build a refugee camp. Readers of Keeping Creed will remember her as Samuel Creed’s Wiccan twin sister. Recurring characters include Alfred Ressel, Trevor’s best friend and ultimate comedic relief, and Samuel Decker, the founder of NEMA with an inability to rein in his employees’ independent streaks.

True to form, Holt gives us a love story layered with delightfully crude political satire and heart-stopping action. Weaved throughout are individual stories of heroism, humor and the human spirit. The characters truly make the story.

Knight undergoes huge developments, especially through his encounters with refugees and a new terrorist threat, ISIS. Supporting him through this, Kate Creed shines as a leading lady. She challenges Knight and, as their relationship blossoms, balances him splendidly. Readers certainly will root for them, despite their stark differences.

Similarly to EGYPTIAN DEMISE, where the author shines a spotlight on the youth participating in the Arab Spring, SYRIAN DANDER gives tribute to the victims of the Syrian Civil War and the Kurdish-Turkish Conflict. Both play a particularly significant role in Trevor’s journey and prepare him for the looming possibility of world war.

Keep in mind that the TK series is intended for mature audiences. There are incidences of war casualties, torture, and domestic and sexual violence. Holt doesn’t hold back with his characters, their struggles and their evils. But it truly makes the story all the more gut-wrenchingly human.

If you enjoy smooth banter, cheeky romance, action-adventure and poking fun at terrorists, then you’ll love SYRIAN DANDER.
