A heart-warming and romantic story, which takes us to a beautiful setting in the Loire region of France.
Christmas is on the way and Grace’s usual family plans require a sudden change, as each of her children have other places to be. Determined not to be home alone, or with some dreaded relatives, and wanting to inject a bit of adventure into a life that has grown too predictable and somewhat lacking in the romance department, she decides, last minute, to rent a cottage in the Loire.
And that’s all I will say as to the plot, so not to give anything away. Fate lends a hand, though, throughout the rest of the story, as does Cupid.
One of the things I most enjoyed about this novel was the setting, once we arrived in France, and all the little customs and local ways, which were enchantingly described – not to mention the hotel and complex of gîtes where the principal action takes place.
This was a very down-to-earth and engrossing story, about families, and the difficulties they can sometimes run into, when things don’t go according to plan. It also sends a strong message to keep believing in love, and romance, despite the knock backs – and affirms that magic can happen at any time, if you’re open to it, and trust the journey.
The relationships between parents and children, difficulties with in-laws, as well as between Grace and her ex-husband Ben – who have remained on friendly terms – are believably and humorously drawn. All of us will recognise such tensions and conflicts from our own lives - as well as the attempts to make-up, and find a way through.
This is a life-affirming and uplifting novel, suitable for reading at any time of year, of course, despite its Christmas-themed setting. A warm and positive tale of people you can relate to, trying to make the best of life and being open to all it can offer.
