Miles away from home, can you survive Christmas alone?

Singleton Grace loves Christmas and having all her family with her on the day. But this year things will be different.

One by one, each of her three children announce that they have other plans for the holidays, leaving Grace home alone with a dilemma. Should she put on a brave face or admit she is hurt?

After deciding it’s time for a change, Grace books a cottage in the French countryside for Christmas.

Max is also at life’s crossroads after coming to terms with the end of his marriage. Making a spur of the moment decision, Max heads to the Loire where he hopes to clear his head, see the sights and escape the festivities.

In the meantime, Grace’s children embark on their own Yuletide journeys. Heidi faces the dreaded in-laws, Amber heads to New York to bag herself a fiancé, and Seth can’t wait to hit the slopes.

But when their plans begin to fall apart, they are all left wishing they were at home with their Mum for Christmas.

Will Grace get what she originally wanted or is a surprise in store?

Don’t you just love it when you finish a book and you can’t help but sigh with satisfaction? That’s what Dixon has created with this wonderful Christmas story. I was so immersed that I felt saddened I could not join Grace and Max at their gite in France. Oh, and I am so ready for Christmas!

This was a delightful story that had me warm inside, all the way down to the tips of my toes. Grace is a likeable character from the beginning and I wanted her to find her happy ending. Dixon’s characterisation is wonderfully played because you see the different elements of Grace’s personality. A mother and friend to her three children, we discover how Grace has evolved into a different person since splitting with her husband. Grace is keen to ensure her children are happy at Christmas, and whilst readers can understand her desire to please, it is impossible to ignore the feeling of loneliness and isolation.

Separation and feeling like an outsider is a key theme in this novel. However, Grace and Max decide to live life as an adventure and it is fate that has them meeting on the ferry en route to France. Similarly, Max is just as likeable and you cannot help but sympathise with him as Dixon reveals his past. Grace and Max are destined to be together and I could not put the book down for wanting to discover this relationship.

This book symbolises the importance of togetherness and family at Christmas time. However, I think Dixon is trying to convey that this should not be forgotten at all, regardless of the time of year. The stories of Grace’s children add to the charm of the plot and I loved how they were eventually all woven together.

If you are looking for a Christmas story, then this is definitely one for your bookshelf! I think I could happily read this book any time of the year and if you wish for a literary pick-me-up, then I think this would certainly fulfil that need!

With thanks to Bloodhound books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

From the very first chapter I knew, Grace was going to be my favourite of Patricia Dixon's French series.

It touched on the feeling off loneliness and how difficult it can become when you have children who are of the age of not "needing" you as much and have their own lives to be getting on with. Also, how being single at certain times of the year can hit that little bit harder.

This book, lifted my spirits and made me think about and cherish certain friends and family who will always be there for me, meaning I will never be alone.

This book also made me want to get that Christmas tree up and get the festivities started.

A lovely heartwarming story of love, friendship and a good sense of humour. The story is mostly set around Christmas but obviously can be read at any time - I read it on holiday in the sun and it didn't distract from the story at all. The main character Grace, realises that her marriage is coming to an end, and it certainly does when her husband moves out and sets up home with another woman.

Written alternately from the viewpoint of various family members, including Grace's grown up children, we get an insight into the thoughts and perspective of the family breakup. It is most definitely not a sad or melancholy story, on the contrary, once Grace makes the decision to go to France for Christmas there is a feeling of optimism and adventure. Mix Grace with Max, add a little Christmas spirit and hey presto – a loving relationship buds and blooms. The only spanner in the works is that all the family Grace tried to leave to have a Christmas on their own, suddenly turn up on her busy loved-up doorstep!

Patricia Dixon writes in a beautiful, fluid flowing style and her characters have a real feel to them, as though they are already your friends. She gives a good background to the characters' personalities and the storyline is well plotted with no loose ends. The story does have a tie-in with her previous books and any earlier readers will smile at the slight ghostly element near the end but it is a totally stand-alone novel and it's not necessary to have read the earlier books.

A great, friendly uplifting read and not just for Christmas – I can thoroughly recommend.

This is a lovely heartwarming tale that has got me in the mood for Christmas.
Grace is in her forties and with a divorce pending and three grown up children, she’s at a bit of a loss as to what comes next.
When the family all take it in turns to tell her they won’t be spending Christmas with her this year, Grace’s heart sinks.
Christmas is special to her so she decides to book a gite in France for her and her dog, and do something completely different.
On the ferry she meets Max who takes her breath away but then she loses sight of him.
The next day, at a drinks reception, Grace can’t believe her eyes when she sees Max again.
He’s also at a crossroads in his life and booked the break away to reassess his life too.
The two of them soon start to get to know each other and there’s definitely a spark there.
Grace then receives several panicked phone calls from her family and wonders if she can make this work.
This is a really lovely story that will warm your heart.
Thanks to Patricia Dixon for sending me a copy to read and review.

Not bad BUT:
❌Open-ended
❌ Read like a re-hashed story I've read before by other others
❌ The whole thing read like a cookie cutter story that I've read before
❌ Storyline isn't anything new

✔️ Cute story

A heart-warming and romantic story, which takes us to a beautiful setting in the Loire region of France.

Christmas is on the way and Grace’s usual family plans require a sudden change, as each of her children have other places to be. Determined not to be home alone, or with some dreaded relatives, and wanting to inject a bit of adventure into a life that has grown too predictable and somewhat lacking in the romance department, she decides, last minute, to rent a cottage in the Loire.

And that’s all I will say as to the plot, so not to give anything away. Fate lends a hand, though, throughout the rest of the story, as does Cupid.

One of the things I most enjoyed about this novel was the setting, once we arrived in France, and all the little customs and local ways, which were enchantingly described – not to mention the hotel and complex of gîtes where the principal action takes place.

This was a very down-to-earth and engrossing story, about families, and the difficulties they can sometimes run into, when things don’t go according to plan. It also sends a strong message to keep believing in love, and romance, despite the knock backs – and affirms that magic can happen at any time, if you’re open to it, and trust the journey.

The relationships between parents and children, difficulties with in-laws, as well as between Grace and her ex-husband Ben – who have remained on friendly terms – are believably and humorously drawn. All of us will recognise such tensions and conflicts from our own lives - as well as the attempts to make-up, and find a way through.

This is a life-affirming and uplifting novel, suitable for reading at any time of year, of course, despite its Christmas-themed setting. A warm and positive tale of people you can relate to, trying to make the best of life and being open to all it can offer.

Another fabulous Christmas read! I really have been spoiled with feel-good festive novels this year - and I still have one or two more tucked away.

Grace and Max - both single, both strangers - are each having a very different kind of Christmas this year; heading to the French countryside in anticipation of a festive break. Just as they decide there may be a potential friendship in the offing, Grace's adult children each find their Christmas plans crashing and burning, all wishing they were with their Mum enjoying their usual traditions. How will Grace's plans work out?

No matter how you spend your own Christmas, this one will strike a chord with you. It has everything you could want - family, friends, meeting new people and enjoying new experiences. Whilst it is a complete read all by itself, this shares the location with the author's previous novels 'Rosie and Ruby' and 'Anna' and includes the title characters from both. Gorgeously written - as always from Patricia Dixon - this is a real feel-good, heartwarming book which will make you look forward to the coming festive season full of warm anticipation! A truly wonderful read encompassing all the joys of December and definitely worth a full five stars.

My thanks to publisher Bombshell Books for my copy; This is my honest, original and unbiased review.

If there is a book to be read on the run up to Christmas, then this is the one. Grace is the archetypal mother/grandmother/sister to all of her family at Christmas time when everyone descends on her, however this year, her three children all have their own plans, leaving her on her own for the first time (unless you count the extended family aka The Klingons!!) So with her soon to be ex husband getting on with his life, Grace decides to head over to a gite in France and explore a different Christmas. On the ferry, she meets a nice looking guy, who just happens to be staying at the same place and so the fun begins.

Patricia’s description of the holiday in France just makes you want to be there and many of us will have been in Grace’s position at some point ( I have...so I could really relate to this story). At times you will laugh, and other times, you want to cry a little. You feel Grace's upset but also her joy. It truly is a story about love, family, relationships, new friends and the diversity of Christmas in Europe.

I would highly recommend reading this story and may do so again mid December!!

To be completely honest I was in love with this book before I read a single page. I’m a huge fan of Patricia Dixon’s as it is but the cover is just simply stunning isn’t it?

Patricia Dixon doesn’t just write stories. She created and brings to life characters who are always in the spotlight in her novels. They are very character driven and I defy you not to fall in love with each and every one of her protagonists. The characters are genuine and everyone of them ends up with a place in my heart. Grace is no exception to this rule.

Separated from her childhood sweetheart and with her three adult children off on their travels for Christmas Grace decides to go it alone by hiring a Gite in France until her family’s plans all crumble. With the very eligible Max on the scene will Grace’s Christmas be saved?

This is such a heartwarming story driven by a fabulous character and with a stunning setting. It’ll make your heart glow.

Highly recommended – just read it!

The setting was so well described, I swear I could smell the wonderful food mentioned within the story!
This is the perfect book to snuggle up with on the sofa, with a cup of hot chocolate and to immerse yourself within the gorgeous story of Grace and her beautiful family celebrating Christmas in France, alongside my favourite characters from all the other books in this awesome series.📚

I wanted a festive read that would get me in a feel good mood for Christmas and had seen this book recommended in a couple of different reading groups, so thought I would give it ago. I won’t give you the blurb as you can read that above, but I will say it certainly delivered with warm, likeable characters, who were easy to relate to. A wonderfully heartwarming story with a few laugh out loud moments, this definitely hit the spot, and I highly recommend.

Grace is the fourth book in Rosie and Ruby series. I am new to this author, and thus the series but did read the first book before reading Grace. That said it would easily standalone and I didn’t need to read the other two books (although I will now).
Grace is a lady of a certain age, who has a comfortable life, with three grown up children and a husband who she has grown apart from.
When he leaves the marital home, and the children all say they have plans for Christmas, Grace decides to take her dog Coco to France for the holiday period.
On the ferry on the way over she meets a widower, Max, who is also travelling over to France with his dog. Although there is a spark between them they don’t see each other again and leave the ferry without meeting up.
However, they find themselves staying at the same place in France in their own gites. Their friendship blossoms and they are spending a lot of time together and plan on having Christmas Day together. However, their plans are thwarted by Grace’s children who all turn up to spend Christmas with her.
What happens next or will need to find out for yourselves.
I really loved this book which is way outside of my normal reading comfort zone and I think it may have opened a whole new genre for me

Yet another book by this author read in one sitting!

All paths (no matter how twisty, rocky or uncertain) lead to the fabulous hotel of dreams and dreamers. Yes, it was another tale of romance but I love that with Ms Dixon, age is no barrier to the wild and fickle ride of falling in love.

There is nothing sweeter than new love in one’s middle years - better by far than when young. Ms Dixon portrays beautifully the rollercoaster of emotions it brings - both fears and joy.

With only one book left in the Destiny series, I will be very sad to say farewell to these marvellous characters.

I was lucky enough to win this book when I read it the first time around and am so glad I did. I have just re read this and once again instantly found the magic that this book holds between its pages. Grace has split from her husband who has now found himself a new partner, one that isn’t quite like his soon to be ex- wife.. The three children have pretty much grown and flown and so fed up of being put on at Christmas when the children are each doing other things Grace takes herself and the dog off to France for a break. Max is also on his own and wonders who the lovely lady is that he saw on the ferry crossing- another opportunity missed so back to his lonely wanderings all for lack of courage. After an eventful Christmas at home I enjoyed reading of another with its inevitable ups and downs. Families and relationships- always a minefield at this time of year. A heart-warming story of life, love, friendships and everything that surrounds them. Anyone who has gone through a relationship breakup will sympathise with Grace (and cheer at her “truth speech”). Characters you feel that you know and understand after just a few chapters and scenarios we have all been through in one way or another. We all need a good, reassuring story to let us know that there is good out there and in the face of adversity, most people are really nice (with the odd exception) as this story shows. An enjoyable heart-warming uplifting read. A book is not just for Christmas…….

Grace is by Patricia Dixon. This is a moving story about being alone on Christmas as well as miles away from your loved ones. It is especially poignant at this time of year as Christmas has just passed and I was unable to spend it with my sister and her family. Patricia Dixon has written this book in such a way that you can easily insert yourself into the book and it becomes your journey.
Grace was at her daughter’s house on Bonfire Night. She had found herself a place to be alone and think. As she watched her family go about celebrating, she thought of the past and the way Bonfire night had developed and evolved. Unfortunately, the younger members may not know what it actually means and how it came about. She was determined her grandchildren would know. She also thought of her husband and how much they had grown apart. Now that he had moved out, things were better except she was lonely. Then, her children all told her that they would be away from home this Christmas. All three had compelling reasons and being the understanding mother she was, she accepted this with grace and told them it was fine. She had options and with the help of her friend at work, she found her dream vacation. She would spend Christmas in a small cabin in France. Maybe she would meet someone there.
Would everyone find what they really wanted for Christmas? Could Grace find peace in celebrating Christmas with just strangers?

Grace – Patricia Dixon

Thank you, for opening the window and allowing me to step through into a world where Christmas Magic was sprinkled everywhere!

Patricia Dixon never ceases to amaze me with her touching insight into family life. Yet again, she has introduced me to someone whom I would love to call my friend – Grace, and from the very first page I was drawn into the life of this wonderful down to earth woman.

When her three adult children, Seth, Amber and Heidi decide to make their own plans for the Christmas break, Grace decides its time to put herself first.

Whilst at the hairdressers she comes across an advert for a lovely hotel in France. Without giving herself time to change her mind she rings up to book a stay over Christmas. Although at that time there is no room at the inn (pun intended - it is Christmas after all) the wonderful Rosie, who is a stalwart of this author’s previous novels, rings back to say there has been a cancellation. Is Grace ready to venture out in to the world alone and will love find her?

Once again, Patricia, has woven a rich tapestry depicting the heart of family love, interspersed with human frailty and coloured in with a big dollop of romance.

An Entirely Satisfying Christmas Story

Grace is unpleasantly surprised to learn that all three of her grown children will not be spending their Christmas at home with her. As a close-knit family, nothing like this has ever happened. After a brief bout of feeling abandoned, she makes the decision to make a break with her predictable life and go an unexpected direction. Such an admirable choice! She books a little cottage in the Loire for the holidays!
On her own for the first time since her wedding day, she is enjoying meeting new people, having new experiences and putting herself first. Due to her opening herself to new experiences, she fortuitously meets an attractive man in circumstances very similar to her own. They share a strong attraction as they continue their metamorphosis into the next needed steps of parents when their children are no longer children.
Their holiday brings them to the beginning of a relationship with a strong future.
Then, a series of disappointments bring each of Grace's children to seek the shelter of her loving care. Reunited as a family, everyone sees new aspects of their mother and of themselves. I can see that they will see time together as a precious choice rather than as the same old, same old of habit.
