While growing up is hard to do, it is essential for both societal strength and individual fulfillment. But what does it mean to be mature, anyway? Difficult to define one-dimensionally, it is best understood as a constellation of many traits, behaviors, actions, and mindsets. In this short ebook, we illuminate the 33 characteristics that make up this constellation of maturity. Each quality is given a succinct summary that serves as both description and reflection, so that you understand what it is, and how you may better grow towards it, and into a thriving adult.
....or at least I wish I had read books that would've given me this mindset.
The book is short and actually it does feel almost like a cheat because the authors quote heavily from a couple of places. But I found myself growing while reading this and not being so afraid of life, knowing that I can certainly control certain things in my life. Reading this book made me want to be become generous with everything that I am and not worry unnecessarily about things that can be taken care of easily. (It probably doesn't make sense what I said lol.)
Either way, it's a good book and I hope to read it monthly since it has 33 chapters. Thanks McKays and AoM.
Enjoyable thought provoking points that provide needed insight and a standard to strive and maintain for success to overcome the immature current state of our world.
I picked this book and read one "trait" or "mark" a day for 33 days. It was a pleasant reminder of what to aim for. Did I agree with everything. Nope. Did I agree with most of it? Absolutely. Did I know all of it already... probably, but I did not put it together the way the authors did. Nice work. I got value from the time spent reflecting on "maturity."
Really enjoyed this breakdown of 33 key traits of maturity. Appreciated the summary and citation of Overstreet’s psychology book, and the contemporary examples of the behavior. Quick read, finished in a day.
I've been following Brett's blog The Art of Manliness since about 2009 and I've read many of his articles and several of his books. His books are all well researched and thought out. 33 Marks of Maturity is a short read but it gives you a lit of 33 milestones that a person should reach to be deemed as mature. Maturity is reached in levels and it's obvious, especially among young men, that maturity takes time to reach and takes effort to practice. This book gives you a lot to think about in a small package.
Well researched as ever, this quick read of qualities in a mature person can convict you in your immaturity and show you where you still need to grow to lead a more fulfilling life, if you are mature enough already to see it. I enjoyed it a lot, though I found myself wanting something more by the ending. Definitely worth the $5.
A short book on the marks of maturity. Well written by Brett and Kate again, always well researched and thoughtfully written. I have been reading their books whenever available and reading articles from AOM for years now, just a fantastic resource, and the books always enlightening no matter what season of life you are in.
Great maxims. Some are gentle reminders; others are more direct wake-up calls. Though a very short read, I could visualize this as a good intro for discussion groups.
Simple and short. Great way to evaluate yourself. I have a mind to use to evaluate subordinates or potential employees in the future, competency can be trained, maturity not as much!
