One of the most valuable books I’ve ever read. I tend to sneer at distilled summaries or abridged versions. Nothing beats the original, right!? Well, I reevaluated that opinion drastically. This book covers different fields of intelectual work from philosophy, psychotherapy, literature to political theory. It is a map to navigate vast oceans and centuries of human thought. By no means, it pretends to be a definitive list of the greatest thinkers and their ideas. It’s too narrow focused on the western school of thought, namely English-speaking world and authors who promote anti-religious opinion, which are my two main objections to the collection. Despite that, it’s an invitation to take your pick and dig deeper into some of the greatest work of human kind.
To me, the most interesting sections were political theory and sociology. It was incredible to read the authors who diagnosed the ills of the modern world and the shortcomings of capitalism so precisely right at its inception some 150 years ago. Over the course of years, their diagnoses got even more relevant and their proposed remedies more urgent than ever.
