The Nolans #2

Not That Kind of Guy

Rate this book
9 hours, 24 minutes

An office attraction becomes something more when they're off the clock in this delightful romantic comedy by the USA Today bestselling author of Not the Girl You Marry.

State attorney Bridget Nolan is successful in all aspects of her life--except romance. After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, she's been slow to reenter the dating scene. To be honest, she has more important things to do like putting bad guys behind bars. But with her brother's wedding right around the corner, she suddenly needs a date and fast. Lucky for Bridget, the legal intern is almost done with his program.

Matt Kido is dumbstruck by Bridget--total love at first sight--but there's one problem. She's totally off-limits while she's his boss. But the moment he no longer reports to her, Matt asks her on a date. An impulsive decision takes them to Las Vegas where, as the saying goes, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Unless you put a ring on it.

I have complex feelings about this book. I loved it but some unnecessary dramatic parts really made me irritated!!!

The facts:

BETTER BOOK: This is definitely so so so much better than “Not the girl you marry” even though I’m a big fan of “How to lose a guy in 10 days” and curly hair of Matthew McConaughey but retelling didn’t work with me. We needed Kate and Matthew on the board!

BETTER CHARACTERS: I loved Bridget, tough, prideful, hard-worker, confidant, successful lawyer, but when it comes to deal with her feelings, she still deals with her mother’s abandonment and parents’ divorce that guides her long term relationship she felt trapped all the time and she finally ended it and of course Matt is charming, sweet, kind, a little immature but at least when it comes to the feelings he was more honest and brave even though he also got hurt and cheated after his first long time relationship.

SIZZLING CHEMISTRY: Their chemistry was compatible, hot, sexy, adorable.

GREAT MASH-UP: The plot was two movies’ mash up: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds’ “Proposal” ( Tight ass, dictatorial boss and loyal assistance’s green card marriage story. Thankfully at out book, there is no deportation risk!) and Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher’s “What happens in Vegas” and of course Friends’ episode that Ross and Rachel got drunk and married in Vegas! (One of my favorite episodes and I loved Jen Aniston’s cat moustache!)

So I stayed in the limbo to decide between three and four stars. There are too many positive elements like great sister and brother relationship and funny thing is Jack and Hannah was better supporting characters than leading ones of a book. I didn’t like their story but at this Jack was amazing, supporting, funny, caring brother and Hannah is batshit crazy, protective sister in law.

But I found the last parts of the books consists too much repeats to create some angsty mood and more nonsense tension. Matt’s mother and ex-girlfriends’ attitudes were full of cliché and ex- douche Chris’ repeating moves to get Bridget back were also boring. And of course big problem and misunderstanding about the couple was also a little unnecessary!

I gave 3.5 points, I was about to round it down but at the end I loved the characters a lot and their story is also sweet, swoony and soft escape for me after reading so much thrillers and it wouldn’t be fair to give this book same stars with the first one because this is so much better. At least we have good background stories and love at first intern meeting kind of sparkles! So let’s round it up to 4 because we don’t easily find good romances and I unfortunately read so many bad ones last year.

Special thanks as always to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing me this sweet, entertaining ARC COPY in exchange my honest review! And let’s say third one is charm because Sasha seems like an interesting, vivid character and I guess we’re gonna read her story sooner.

This was a quick read, office romance, agree to fake date, but really fall for each other, read it before, kinda book 🥱 I feel like I’ve already read this story a hundred times over. But this one felt... rushed?... I don’t know... i didn’t quite swoon over this couple or buy into their chemistry. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It was still entertaining enough- so take it or leave it.

Each time I picked up this book I kept thinking about how much I love the author’s writing style, how well it sits with me, how I felt captivated by it and because of that how connected I became to the characters and story.

It was just so good.

I enjoyed how messy these characters were. It was great and tiring being in their heads since we really explore their vulnerabilities. But it made them all the more real, flawed and lovable.

I can’t think of a single thing I disliked.

Not That Kind of Guy is about attorney Bridget Nolan. Bridget is Jack’s sister from ‘Not the Girl You Marry’ and she is one tough lady. I was so happy to get her story.

Bridget has been single after breaking up with her long time boyfriend, and has no real interest in getting with anyone else right now. Matt Kido is Bridget’s new intern and though they’re both insanely attracted to each other, they’re off limits. That is until Matt’s internship is over… Matt and Bridget end up in Vegas together for her brother and his fiancé’s pre-wedding celebration and, well, things happen.

There was a moment that happened in Vegas that made me hella uncomfortable. It might just be a me thing and I hesitate even mentioning it, but once it happened, it just completely took me out of the story. I still loved a lot about it, but it put a bad taste in my mouth.

My favorite thing about this book was Matt. I straight up adored this guy. He was confident, sweet, and fell hard for Bridget. I also loved that this story line fell into the Vegas thing (from the blurb I’m guessing you could see what happens there) and I enjoy that troupe lots!

I really struggled with how to rate this one. There were so many things I loved about it, but equally as many things that just didn’t work for me. Though this wasn’t perfect for me, I think Andie J. Christopher is a talented writer and I’ll definitely be reading more from her!

Not That Kind of Guy is sweet, lighthearted and absolutely fun.

Bridget is a state’s attorney looking for love. Well, she wants to look for love, but her work life keeps her pretty busy. When she needs a date for her brother’s wedding, she finds one in an intern at her firm, Matt. The pair head to Vegas together and a romance begins.

This was so much fun! Read it if you need a quick escape right now!

I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

Sweet and swoony. Andie J. Christopher has written a fun and entertaining romcom. We met Bridget in Miss Christopher’s previous book “Not the Girl You Marry”. She was Jack’s feisty little sister. Bridget has sworn off men after having her heart stomped on by her long-term boyfriend. So when Matt comes to intern at her law office she is not tempted at all (at least that’s what she tells herself) even though there is chemistry between them. Bridget and Matt form a friendship, so when his internship is over she decides it would be OK to use him as her plus one to her brothers wedding. The first wedding event they attend is a trip to Las Vegas that is a bit awkward because Bridgets ex is also in attendance. But Bridget and Matt seem to handle the situation OK, by the end of the trip Matt put a ring on it. So does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas? Or will Bridget and Matt continue their relationship/marriage?

Such a fun read with so much delicious wit and banter. Bridget was such a likable strong sassy character, a girl I’d love to be friends with. Matt was a genuine good guy who occasionally needed to grow a pair. I love the chemistry and banter between them and really wanted them to get their HEA. Love the fact that Jack and Hannah made an appearance in this book. Jack was such an amazing big brother and Hannah was seriously the greatest mama bear sister-in-law ever. There were of course some frustrating moments of misunderstanding, but that always seems to happen in these books. This was absolutely another winner from this author and I am looking forward to what’s next. Bridget and Hannah have a big brother who needs a little love.

This book in emojis 💼 💍 🍹 🎰 👰🏼

I wanted to get my hands on Not That Kind of Guy the second I heard about it after my experience with Not the Girl You Marry. To say my expectations were high is a huge understatement . . . .

I didn’t bother reading the entire synopsis. I thought this was going to be a fake date trope since I was aware the jumping off point of the story was Bridget being an attorney and Matt being a summer clerk who somehow ended up as her date for her brother’s wedding. I also figured that Matt could possibly be my new book boyfriend because . . . . .

Ummmmm, no perverts. Because he was going to be smart. In my head this was totally going to be a weeeeeeee little bit like The Proposal. Funnily enough, it ended up being a “we got a whoospie marriage in Vegas” trope (not a spoiler, it totally says so in the dang synopsis and on the effing cover, but why would I ever look at those things????). I’m okay with that sometimes, but this one also had him coming from money and her not being good enough for his family and a couple of douchey exes and a spilling of a heavy personal secret at a dinner table that then had to be dealt with and a “maybe we should try to be married” even though the two pretty much never even had any conversations and just banged. Bottom line . . . . .

Sadly this one wasn't a home run for me. Obviously YMMV and I would certainly not attempt to steer anyone away from reading it. I will anxiously await Ms. Christopher’s next release and still be the first in line begging for a copy.

Bridget broke up with her long-term boyfriend and is not interested in dating. She's a state attorney, and she's focused on work. Matt is in law school, and working as a summer intern in Bridget's office. Matt is immediately attracted to Bridget. He can't make a move on his boss, but he takes a chance as soon as his internship ends.

Told using the alternating points of view of Bridget and Matt. Bridget is smart and independent. Matt is charming and attentive. While they work together, they work well, but hide their attraction to one another. Fortunately, it's only a summer internship, and they are soon able to admit their feelings.

I was hesitant about this book because I wasn’t impressed with Andie J. Christopher’s Not the Girl You Marry. This one sounded like a cute and light read though, so I thought I'd give it a chance. I'm happy I did. I found Not That Kind of Guy to be a better book.

A fun contemporary romance. Delightful characters in a sweet romance. A good read for fans of rom-coms.

This didn’t do it for me.
I am starting to believe that Americans are too religious to write rom com. I think if the fear of sex outside of marriage is so embedded in you that you make the characters get drunk married in Vegas before they have less than average sex (and call it amazing😂), just do everyone a favour and start the book with an arranged marriage. It would honestly be more intriguing than whatever this was.

I loved Andie’s previous book and this synopsis sounded like sheer perfection. Sadly, I’m wondering if two stars is too high.

I liked Bridget and Matt well enough. They’re both charismatic and loyal people. They had so much potential, if only they would have opened their damn mouths. Of course I loved seeing Hannah and Jack and some of their scenes were the bright spots.

Plot wise, it’s a mess. It’s all telling, no showing and the long long long passages of inner monologue were so repetitive. I needed witty dialogue and instead got bland and boring and nearly non-existent. The attempt at tension and build up was lack luster and even their HEA was a let down.

Overall, it was a fun idea, but the lack of conversation and chemistry between the MCs really left a lot to be desired.

Full review to come but this book did not improve from the last one. The writing was a whole more telling than showing. I had issues with character motives and the whole trope of getting hitched in Vegas and staying married thing. Just not plausible in my opinion with how things executed.

Someone pinch me! This was sooo good and the only thing I didn't like about it was that it ended. Bridget is my spirit animal even though we have nothing in common. She's the type of woman I wished I could be but always came up short. If we're being honest, I still come up short, but whatever! She's an amazing badass.

"Bridget Nolan had lush auburn hair, piercing gray-blue eyes, cut-glass cheekbones, and a voice that was better than a hand job."

Matt Kido. So, where could I find one like him? He's just been through a bad breakup with a she-devil when he goes and changes up all his plans. The first day of his internship, he sees the fierce and beautiful, Bridget. The same woman whose sworn off all relationships. For good reason...men are shiiit, hah!

Love at first sight...it's a thing people! Especially when it comes to Matt; for he's never seen anything as beautiful than Bridget. Then as fate would have it, the two become work colleagues in the closest way possible-as boss and employee. Dun dun dun.

The two obviously can't have a relationship because of ethics, blah blah blah. What happens when Matt's internship ends and he's no longer under her (at least not in the way he wants to be, yet.) though?

“The way I see it, we’re both consenting adults. I no longer work for you. And I think you’re attracted to me, too.”

Matty boy wastes no time, y'all! I like that. Herein starts the good stuff. I enjoyed watching Bridget fight hard (but not THAT hard) over her feelings for Matt. It was only a matter of time anyways. The two had the explosive chemistry we all love to read about so much. There was only one thing left to do in the end...

Overall, I was a giddy mess throughout the whole book. This is the type of romance that makes you swoon into Fabio like it's the 1980s. Yum!

After my not-so-great experience with Not the Girl You Marry I decided to give Andie J. Christopher another chance and read this romance novel. It went a bit better, but it still didn't work for me. I saw no chemistry between the two main characters and I could literally not see their attraction for one another. Also, I feel like they got to know so little about each other.
I was really hoping to find a new romance author whose books I could read in the future, but unfortunately it wasn't the case with this one.

I disliked almost every single thing about this.

There was probably a decent story somewhere, buried underneath all the ridiculousness but nothing about this worked for me. The writing style is all tell and no show, the characterization makes little sense and the pacing is off.

The books opens with Matt starting at Bridget's office as an intern and they both experience insta-lust. This is fine, it happens, but then there's a two-month time jump, in which we are supposed to believe that the lusty feelings have only increased and then they go to Vegas for Bridget's brother's and soon-to-be sister-in-law's bachelor weekend and they end up getting drunk married.

Which, okay, still willing to go with that. Except at that point both of them are also already having ~feelings and wondering whether they're in love, but like a day ago the dude was still her intern and we've seen no interactions or scenes between them that could show us how their connection has deepened. We're just told that it has. By the end of the book, barely three weeks have past since the Vegas thing.

Matt's characterization is also a mess (well, both of the MCs really, but let's focus on Matt) because Bridget describes him as being well-known for his rich boy playboy reputation, but he just got out of a 3-year relationship and he's only 24 or 25? So how exactly did he earn this reputation? It's never addressed or explained.

Also, even though this isn't marked as a series, this is clearly the follow-up to "Not the girl you marry", which I didn't read and now never plan to. But Bridget's brother (who was the hero of that book apparently) and his fiancée Hannah feature heavily in this book.

This book and the author's writing style really reminded me of a Jasmine Guillory book/story. So if you love her books and are a huge fan, then you should definitely give this a try. As it stands, Jasmine Guillory is an author whose books I won't be picking up anymore because they're not for me and I fear Andie J. Christopher just joined the list.

This was a hot mess and by the end both Matt and Bridget had gone back and forth SO MANY TIMES that I didn't even care whether they stayed together or not. The entire book is a string of neverending clichés, including both of their exes and Matt's mother.

Blech.

Regret.

That is my primary feeling upon finishing this book. I bought this book bc quarantine and I shouldn't have. I wasn't bowled over by her first book so I don't know why I was in such a hurry to read this one?

Anyway, Bridget and Matt were not an enjoyable couple for me. While the only thing I did appreciate about this book is that he is 5 years younger than her the rest of it was ridiculous. The get drunk married in Vegas after she was the boss of him for several months. Then they bonded bc their exes sucked. That we basically it. Also,it was extra jumpy and I often had to flip back a page to make sure I wasn't going crazy and skipping ahead. AND cardinal sin, they used the wrong form of peaking. Errors like that straight piss me off in published novels.

I do not recommend, and I will not read any additional novels by this author. Thanks.

The second book of the series
focuses on Jack's younger sister Bridget Nolan, who is a successful prosecutor. She spent more than a decade in a relationship with one of Jack's friends, Chris Dooley, organising Chris's life and doing all the emotional labour, giving, giving, giving...until she realised that the kind of future life she was getting herself into wasn't what she wanted. Now two years later she still feels her decision was right and being alone meant she could focus on her work. When her boss tells her that she is getting a new intern, Bridget is less than excited. Matt Kido is a rich boy with a reputation, but his family fund the fellowship she would like to get, so Bridget needs to treat him fairly. Ironically, this is something Matt Kido has little experience of. People do not expect him to pull his weight. They just do his work or let him make mistakes and cover his messes. But not Bridget Nolan. Strict, but professional, she remains a mystery for Matt.
Bridget and Matt have an undeniable chemistry and make a sweet accidental couple who need to resolve their past issues. I really appreciated the fact that it was not an office romance.
I liked Bridget with her professional attitude and great work ethic and could relate to her realistic dilemmas. And Matt was sweet, kind, generous, and sexy. Bridget is older and is in a different place career wise. She comes from a different background with different expectations. You have to be a real romantic to make this couple succeed against all odds, but the author does a good job making us believe in it.

It was nice to see Jack being protective of his sister and Hanna being her formidable self. Matt's mother and Bridget's ex-boyfriend played their predictable roles. The character that we get to see a bit more is Jack and Bridget's mother who left her family to pursue education and career and then came back to their father who never stopped loving her. Here there was an interesting contrast between the message of conforming to traditional roles until one becomes miserable and has to leave and the importance of marriage as opposed to a casual fling.

Overall, enjoyable, light, entertaining. I'm already looking forward to the next title in the series.

Not That Kind of Guy was a fun, sexy, and a swoony story about what happens when a rich guy needs to get from under his family wishes, and an established woman assigned to show him the ropes in her law firm. Bridget is an established badass lawyer that finds an attraction to Matt when he starts to intern in her office. She also finds out that Matt's parents are the deciding factor if she receives the fellowship that could provide her with financial security. While Bridget and Matt are working together, they both fight their attraction until the internship is over, and they fake a relationship during a bachelor/bachelorette party in Vegas for her brother Jack and Hannah. The saying is what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but this time it doesn't. I loved all of the angst between Bridget and Matt. I found myself laughing out loud and feeling for all of our characters, not just Bridget and Matt. I can't wait to see if there will be more stories involving these families and personalities.

2 STARS!

Not That Kind of Guy by Andie J. Christopher brings us Bridget Nolan, the sister to our hero in book one, Not the Girl You Marry.

Bridget is a lawyer who works for the state's attorney office. She's recently broken up from her long time boyfriend and has no interest venturing back onto the dating scene. Matt becomes her intern for the summer. He's flirtatious and charming. There's an undeniable attraction between Matt and Bridget. He likes her but he knows it won't go anywhere; however, that doesn't stop him from trying.

Once the internship is over they decide to become friends. Bridget invites Matt to come with her to Vegas for Jack and Hannah's (book one's couple) bachelor/bachelorette party and... What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas as one drunken night with Matt ends up in wedding bells.

I really liked the premise of the book and how Andie unfolds the plot. This book would have been 3 stars if it weren't for the 80% mark when I reached THE moment and everything went down hill drastically. The whole 'Matt loves her then thinks she's after his money' thing was just unnecessary drama. At that point, the appeal of Matt was lost in my eyes and there was no redeeming him.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the way the author has connected this series thus far, reuniting me with some beloved characters from book one. Initially, I was super excited to dive into this book, but sadly I was let down. Maybe my hopes were too high. Or maybe this author just isn't for me. Regardless, she is still very much talented; it's evident in her writing style, so I suggest you take a chance on her storytelling before coming to conclusions based solely on reviews.

Sizzling chemistry, good banter, and average plot make this an easy poolside read that is entertaining despite some uneven and rushed pacing. Not That Kind of Guy is sort of an unintentional recreation of The Proposal and mashes up office romance with fake dating to create a so-so spin on the beloved movie.

Leading lady Bridget Nolan is an assistant state attorney in Chicago. She was raised on the south side to an Irish father, and her sole focus is building her career prosecuting sexual assault cases.

Bridget agrees to take on a student intern solely because she thinks his connections may help her earn a fellowship. Enter nepo-baby Matt Kido, whose wealthy family is politically-connected. Matt turned down a cushy job to the shock of his entire family because he wanted to avoid his ex and rebel a bit against his parent’s expectations (again, not so dissimilar from Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal).

The chemistry between Bridget and Matt during that internship is off the charts and so when the internship ends, Bridget invites Matt to be her date at her brother’s wedding in Vegas. After all, no better way to show up your ex than to bring a younger, hotter model. However their attraction escalates quickly when they get drunk, hook up, and decide to get married to annoy their parents with plans to divorce later.

I definitely found Bridget to be a better-developed character than Matt. This was funny and the plot worked better than the prior book Not the Girl You Marry, but overall I found that this was a bit uneven in pacing and only ok. Great for a quick and easy rom com, but not one of the best I’ve read either. It had sort of a mash up of tropes—office romance, agree to a fake relationship only to really fall for one another, and different backgrounds coming together. Nothing ground breaking and the way it came together felt rushed and not well-developed. Otherwise an entertaining poolside read for the romance lovers!

This was such a delightful read and a marked improvement from the author’s previous book. Matt and Bridget were so sweet together, I love how their story started, where it went, and how it ended up.

I was a little worried initially, as this story jumped right into it without really fleshing out the characters well (something I feel the previous book suffered from) and it felt as though it was going to go the insta-love direction. However, good things do come to those who wait, and the story ended up totally making up for the rushed first chapters and it was easy to root for these two to stick together.

If you love fake dating/marriage, this is definitely one to check out!

It’s difficult to explain the plot of the book without spoiling too much. I know not everyone reads book descriptions (I very rarely do) because it can be a lot more fun going into a story blind. Especially with romance novels.

This story has a very different feel than Christopher’s previous novel, Not the Girl You Marry. While also at the same time feeling very similar. I’d say they’re on par with each other enjoyment wise. So if you liked Not the Girl You Marry, then you’ll enjoy Not That Kind of Guy. But if you are interested in this book, you really do need to read the other one first. The main female protagonist of this book is the sister of the male protagonist in Not the Girl You Marry, so there are spoilers for how it ends.

Christopher writes romance novels that are fine. They’re a great way to just let yourself go and enjoy a bit of swoony sexy passages. They aren’t my favourite books but I like them.

Matt Kido is going to be topping lists of best book boyfriends of 2020, because he is the ultimate best! Bridget is just what we need in a romance heroine-tough, but vulnerable, and able to hold her own in any situation (even if shes's freaking out inside). No one does movie gender flips in books like Andie, and I cannot wait to see what comes next from her awesome mind!
