Princess Harriet Wesselbach is growing tired of her pampered, privileged lifestyle. The only thing worse than the gilded cage of a royal life is the overprotective nature of her brother, the crown prince.
When the palace is suddenly thrown into turmoil, Harriet takes the opportunity to run away and branch out on her own. After all, how hard could it be to live not as a royal, but as an ordinary young lady?
Harriet wants to stand on her own two feet, and she is determined that nothing will get in her way. Especially not a chance encounter with a handsome stranger.

The last thing Jacob Lauer needs or wants to do is play nanny to a spoilt princess.
But that’s exactly what he finds himself having to do.
From the moment he meets her, she is nothing but trouble, and what should have been an easy assignment is turning out to be more difficult than he had bargained for.
Not least because the longer he spends in Harriet’s company, the more difficult it is to hide his growing attraction to the young royal.

When Harriet’s safety is threatened, Jacob must put aside all his conflicting feelings and concentrate on the job at hand.
Will he be able to ignore his heart, when he’s protecting the princess?
I'm Nadine, a writer from County Laois in Ireland.
I’ve been writing historical romance since March 2014 and have no plans to stop!
While my heart belongs to Regency, there are a lot of other genres and ideas fluttering around in my brain so who knows what will happen next?!
When I'm not writing I can be found scurrying around after my three children. Or my dog. Or my cat.
I have a brilliant family and wonderful friends who are ever patient and supportive of me.
I'm sometimes asked where my inspiration comes from. I guess it's from everywhere! I love my gorgeous husband to distraction so that helps! I think I also put a little bit of people I know into my characters...so if you know me and you recognize someone... ;)
Have an ever so mild obsession with Jane Austen and have properly researched time machines in case there's one who could take me back to 1800s. Spoiler alert: there isn’t one. My brain might be odd but it's a pretty fun place to be at times!
My writing really took off when my youngest started preschool. So now, while my children are being taken care of by teachers, my characters are being taken care of by me!
To be fair though, I can quite regularly be found at 2am glued to the laptop when I get an idea!
I enjoyed this story. Harriet is endearing in her innocence and brave personality. She wants desperately to be independent, but having been sheltered all her life she isn't as ready for the real world as she likes to belive. I loved Jacob and Harriet's relationship, it was fun watching them banter and fall in love at the same time. There will probably never be a moments peace between them, but they're rather cute together.
One of the best parts of reading this book was doing a buddy-read with my friend Deb, and sending our favorite book quotes to each other, makes reading even more fun when you're sharing it with a good friend. Overall, an enjoyable read and a fun series. I look forward to reading the next book.
Quarantine is no joke. It has messed with my ability to focus and desire to read. All I want to do is escape, yet I couldn't seem to. Enter Nadine Millard and her new book Protecting the Princess. Finally a story I can immerse myself in and just ENJOY! I loved Harriet and Jacob. I loved the idea of Harriet wanting to run away from royal life (like Jasmine from Aladdin!) Jacob and his protectiveness was just super attractive. The story flowed and I totally lost myself in it. I finally escaped.

My review :
Will her escape be her ruin or her salvation ...
This book had one hard task, distracting me from my last read hangover. So I confess I did not know what to expect. And oh my, it was so fun to follow Harriet and Jacob’s journey. Harriet is at the beginning (and even later) a selfish reckless impulsive girl with not a lot in her brain if she ever thought she could escape alone the palace. As a very sheltered young woman, she has absolutely no idea how the world turns around her, she orders, she is delivered, but outside the walls of the palace, there are other rules and a silly girl would be easily lost. Still, while I cringed at her unawareness of life, I had to remind me, she was raised in silks and satins, so she has absolutely no idea of how to deal with life’s threats. Jacob is the one with the head on his shoulders, still she manages to make him run a merry chase. While he expected a boring assignment, he is now following a hoyden seeking to turn him mad. Yet, the more time he spends with her, the more he falls for this surprising not so pampered princess. This is a coming of age tale, and while Harriet will always be Princess Harriet, it was so much fun to see her growing up, learn to stand for herself. Her interactions with Jacob were hilarious from their throwing of quips and barbs to their dealing with each new situations, she was quite refreshing, even when she falls for every trap sets for her. But her rescues are always full of humorous moments. And while it is what is called a clean romance, the main couple has some rather hot times together. 5 stars for this so enjoyable read, perfect to lighten the mood.
I was granted an advance copy, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
An assassination attempt on the King and Queen, a big brother getting overprotective and ready to ship her off to her relations... what's a bored princess to do? This looked light and fun and perfect to for a free Saturday afternoon.
Protecting the Princess is the second in the Royals of Aldonia series. Each book gives the Wesselbach siblings their chance at romance. There is a connection to the previous book, but its loose enough that this could be read standalone.
Harriet knows there is danger to her family after an assassin got close to her parents and she knows her oldest brother has a lot of responsibilities and care, but between boredom- and a little envy of her second brother who found love without it being arranged for him- she suddenly is done being moved around like a piece of the furniture. She gathers a few things and some provisions and decides to sneak out of the palace and go off to the Winter Palace woodcutter's hut for the duration of the threat. Naturally, she's barely outside the palace gates when trouble finds her an an irritating, charming man has to come to her rescue- and keep coming to her rescue. Wasn't this her bid for independence?
A glorified nanny- the best spy in the country- and he pulled nanny duty on a spoilt, runaway princess. Jacob sees the next two weeks as the longest of his life when Princess Harriet tumbles into scrape and poor situation after next while fumbling over the lies she tells not realizing he followed her right out the palace gates and sounding exactly like a princess with her orders and attitude. But, he soon sees the sweet and winsome side of a woman who just wants to be taken seriously and not be treated as the useless and helpless afterthought with not an independent idea in her head. Meanwhile, real danger sneaks up on them and he can't let attraction or impossible feelings distract him.
It turned out to be a light, quick read, and mostly fun. Yes, Harriet was a brat and she really was lousy at getting by on her own, but I felt for her because I'm pretty sure I'd kick up a stink too if my brother tried to shove me about and stick me with a person I loathed before packing me off out of the country. So, I forgave her mostly and laughed at the back and forth between her and Jacob who enjoyed her sass.
There was a nice suspense line because of the attack on the royals and later when more action happens. But the real conflict was what was coming when Harriet learned how Jacob came to help her and who he really was. She'd opened up to him and I just knew that level of vulnerability would make the truth feel like a dagger to her.
All in all, it was a pleasure and left me smiling. I liked the characters and their sweet romance, the fun made-up royal family and country, and the darling charmer, Jacob. I would definitely go back for Alex's story and continue on with Christopher's. This is for those who need a quicker, lighter historical romance, enjoy light-hearted royal romances, or just want an easy afternoon escape read.
My thanks to the author who provided a copy of the book for me to read in exchange for an honest review.
I definitely took my time and enjoyed every minute of Harriet’s and Jacob’s story. It was an escape from reality that had the right dose of chemistry that I love in a novel. One of my favorite lines from the book- “Because I needed to be the one to make you safe,” he said. “Because I wanted to be here with you. Because I never wanted to be parted from in the first place.” Is that not swoon worthy?! Well done Nadine!
Another great read from Nadine! Her books never fail to put a smile on my face. She has written some of my favorite book characters and Jacob and Harriet are no exception. I'm excited to read Christopher's story next!
Harriet Liezel Farago Wesselbach, Crown Princess of Aldonia is a pampered, selfish, impulsive young lady who is absolutely clueless as to the perils that face a young woman outside the palace grounds and her overprotective brother, the heir to the throne, is driving her mad with the way he runs her life. When an assassination attempt is made on her father's life (the king), her brother orders her to England to stay with their younger brother & his wife. She doesn't want to go and comes up with a plan to escape to a cottage on Winter Castle grounds, a two day trip away, but she would be on her own and would leave a note for her brother to find we her maid discovers her absence. It doesn't take Harriet long to realize she should have planned her escape a little better.
Prince Christopher knows something is up with Harriet as she acquiesced to his order of her going to England too easily. He contacted one of his close soldiers whe has been doing spy work for him and ordered him to follow his sister to see what she does when she leaves the palace. Jacob Lauer is a spy and a good one and now the prince wants him to become a nanny to his sister. The moment they meet, Jacob rescues her from a drunk trying to accost her and the adventures just keep coming. He is being paid to do a job and must protect her but this is the harder than any spy mission he has been on in the past.
Harriet give Jacob a fake name so he doesn't know who she is and even though he knows who she is, he doesn't tell her he is working for or his true reason for helping her. The funny and dangerous situations Harriet finds herself in and the sneaky way Jacob just appears to help is so much fun. After spending time together, Jacob discovers that Harriet is no longer an assignment - he really cares about her and wants more but know his position as a commoner would never work. Harriet learns a lot about herself in her time away from her privileged life - she can pick berries, try to catch fish, can stand up for herself and can fall in love with a man she just met. I highly recommend this book and it is the perfect "getaway" from all the isolation, etc. as it is a humorous story with a wonderful couple that give you a lot of laughs and makes you sigh and smile when you read the end!
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
Nadine has a way of writing that just sucks you in and takes you to a whole new world! This book is clean, without feeling prudish - which I always appreciate - and the story is fast paced and leaves you wanting more. You will love Harriet and Jacob!
I received a free copy from the author. My review is voluntary.
Jacob and Princess Harriet are a very beautiful couple considering their propensity for trouble. Princess Harriet is an interesting character. The gist of the story is a mischievous princess and an impossible agent of the crown. Nadine Millard has written a beautiful story.
Fun read. It did take me a minute to decide what the time period was in the beginning but I quickly moved to more important questions like, "who is the bad guy?" "How can he protect her despite her obstinate nature?"
It's a (kinda) cute story, but the only way I was able to enjoy it was to ignore every detail that made me doubt this was set in the fifties/sixties. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING makes sense in the Regency or Victorian era. But in the sixties, It kinda worked for me. The fMC was utterly stupid, though the author tries to tell us she's witty and fierce. To me, she seemed dumb. The MMC made me wonder how he was still alive, and the Crown Prince took some very questionable decisions, so I guess for the level of intelligence of the people in this book, the Princess was above average. I did enjoy the scene where they ignore the bad guy to bicker, it was funny.
Harriet finally came to the conclusion that if she ever wanted to show her family that she could do things for herself, now was the time. So she decided to run away for a while to an old cabin in the woods. Along the way she runs into a man named Jacob who has his own agenda. And the struggle begins!
Judging from the cover, you'd think this was a contemporary story, it's not. It's set a couple centuries ago I imagine, but they speak in somewhat modern language and phrasing. It's not horrible, but enough to know that more research needed to be done. The story was ok and somewhat cute in parts, but it was fast and could have been developed more.
