Children are going missing. They are not heard from again until sinister requests for cryptocurrency go viral. The public must pay or the children die. For lead detective Yvonne Giles, the case is complicated enough. And then the unthinkable happens...
DI Giles and her team are back into a new investigation involving the apparent disappearance, potential abduction, of a vulnerable teenager. Initially this incident seems a little strange- could be nothing. But a little investigation goes a long way in this case as more children go missing and an increasingly complex situation unfolds.
I always enjoy books by this author, the pace is fast so there is something going on with every page. The focus on good old fashioned policing, the gut instinct and taking the time to ask witnesses the right questions with a real human approach. It's not a difficult or complex read as there isn't an over reliance on forensics or science to solve these crimes.
This is the first book of it's type that I've read about the use of Bitcoin and the dark web which really got my imagination going about cyber crime and how such great technology can be used in a very sinister way. Despite the very serious subject matter, this is not a heavy or difficult read. The author does not dwell on the pain or suffering and instead we get enough detail to understand what's going on but the focus is on the investigation.
I always enjoy the interaction between the characters... I love the expression 'not a sausage' to explain that Dewi doesn't have a clue! Its like you're right there with them in the investigation room!
Another thoroughly enjoyable book from Ms Morgan. I would say it's best to read the other books in the series before this one to get a full appreciation of the characters. However, this is a stand alone book and therefore it can be read independently.
I was a bit uneasy about reading this book as it involves children and her own family as the main characters in the plot but I am glad I carried on with it i really enjoyed the twists and turns it took,I never saw what happened to the DCI and her right-hand man. I feel that the DCI has fitted right into the team but I wish she and her boss would get together I think it would be a good fit. Another great book, each story fits seamlessly from book to book. Glad I found this author and series of books I totally recommend them
Really enjoyed this series very good storylines and believable characters, also enjoying the fact that they are set in Wales.Would be nice if the main character Yvonne could start to have a bit of a life away from her job .
