Wolf Girl #2

The Great Escape: Wolf Girl 2

Rate this book
I held onto the bars of the truck and howled to my dogs as they fell further and further behind.
Sunrise, Brutus, Zip, Nosey and Tiny all ran as hard as they could, but there was no way they could keep up...

After four years alone in the wild, Gwen is overjoyed to see another person.
But when she is thrown into the back of a van and stolen away to a prison camp, things don't look good.
How will her pack find her? Where is her human family? Will the other kids in the camp be friends or enemies?

Luckily, Eagle is fast, the dogs are brave, and bars and fences are no match for the one and only Wolf Girl!

Captured and thrown into the back of the truck, Wolf Girl – known as Gwen four years prior when she lost her family – watched as her pack became further away, lost in the dust. She howled her despair as she soon lost sight of Sunrise, Brutus, Zip, Nosey and Tiny. Would she ever see them again?

Trying to escape after the arrival at the prison camp, Wolf Girl was soon caught again and thrown into a cell high up in the building. She didn’t know how she’d escape – but she would! Would Eagle and her dogs find her?

Wolf Girl 2: The Great Escape by Aussie author Anh Do is the 2nd in the Wolf Girl series and another fast paced, adventure filled installment which I thoroughly enjoyed. An excellent series for young people around 10-12 years of age. And oldies, as I haven’t been that age for a LONG time 😉 Highly recommended.

I'm reading this series with my 7 year old and it has been a lot of fun. Of all the books we have read, the Wolf Girl books have definitely been most likely to have her asking for "just one more chapter, please please please" before going to sleep for the night :-)

It’s been two years since I read the first book in this series. I’ve devoured multiple Anh Do books since then but I’ve been hesitant to return to Wolf Girl. It’s not because I didn’t enjoy the first book; I did. My reluctance to continue this series has been based solely on my fear that something bad will happen to one of Gwen’s pack. I can handle all types of mayhem occurring in the lives of human characters but one of my weaknesses, in life and my life in books, relates to animals being harmed.

When we last saw Gwen she had just encountered her first humans in four years. Rather than this being cause for celebration, Gwen was instead imprisoned in the back of a truck because, well, some humans suck. When they arrive at a camp, a quarry surrounded by a high fence, Gwen is imprisoned again, this time in a cell.

I had to escape this place!
In the camp, Gwen meets Fran, who seems to be in charge. She also meets Rupert, a boy about her age. He’s one of the many kids working at the camp. Gwen doesn’t know who she can trust, though.

Meanwhile, Gwen’s pack are on her trail.

This series remains darker than Anh Do’s other books. It hasn’t been spelled out what’s really going on in Gwen’s world but some humans are clearly dangerous. The camp where children and adults are forced to work brought to mind concentration camps. Although we know kids are put to work carting rocks from one place to another, the camp’s overarching agenda is unknown at this point.

While Gwen still doesn’t know the fate of her human family, she now has a potential human friend in Rupert and she still has her loyal pack.

A memory of her father gave me my favourite line in this book:
‘As long as we’re true to ourselves, and each other, we can fix just about everything’
So, was I right to be worried about Gwen’s pack? One of Gwen’s dogs is injured in this book but it’s not life threatening. Because of this, I’m going to proceed with caution. Fair warning, though… If any of Gwen’s dogs, her wolf or her eagle die, I’ll be bailing immediately.

This book is just back to back action! As a 30 year old I enjoyed it as an easy and fun read. Looking at it as a student teacher I think it's a great transitional chapter book with lots of emotional connection, challenges, and movement. Pictures every page make it even more engaging. Can't wait for the next one :)

5 stars from both myself and the 9 year old!
This is the first book she stayed up late reading- under the covers, torch out- because she just had to know how it would end.
The inclusion of some chapters from the dog's POV was both her favourite part, and my own.
The stakes are raised quite a bit in this book, and the tension is high! Anh Do does a fabulous job at creating that tension without making things too complicated for young readers, but still keeping things interesting and engaging enough for older readers.
We are both moving onto book 3 immediately!

If you have a young reader at home- definitely check this series out! I have yet to meet a kid who has read this series and hasn't adored it!

Kids love this hook, my class shared it around and passed it on. The pictures and text work well together to add the next chapter to Wolf Girl. The dogs play a bigger part, as now we get insight into their thoughts and feelings. All waiting for the next book.

Well I thought wolf girl 1 was really interesting so I went to the a load of book stores to find the great escape. When I found it I started reading it straight away. She was locked in a van and then she came to a place where children were bashing rocks with hammers. She was locked up in a dungeon and everyone called her wolf girl. She meets a boy called Rupert. The dogs find her and then she escapes with Rupert. That’s all I’ve read up to . I’m still reading.

I like this book because it's about surviving in the wild. Gwen kept on trying to survive and not die and I feel like this is very different from the world I live in. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an adventure. This book a page-turner.

What worked:
Readers need to know that Gwen was left alone four years ago, and she’s been living with four dogs ever since. The story follows Gwen, while other chapters cover the dogs, until the group is reunited. The dogs are of different species with their own unique personalities. Sunrise has known Gwen the longest, and she acts as the group’s leader when they’re separated from Gwen. Tiny is a Chihuahua and uses sensitive hearing to act as a lookout. Zip is a Greyhound with poor eyesight, and Nosey is a Labrador with a keen sense of direction. Brutus is a Mastiff and often has a grouchy disposition. The dogs are aided by an eagle called Eagle. Young readers will enjoy how Gwen works with her canine friends and Eagle to escape capture and search for her parents.
Gwen is taken to a guarded compound surrounded by a tall fence and confined in a small prison cell. She sees children her age laboring to break up rocks and then carrying them into a secret, walled-off area. Readers are left to imagine what’s going on in this compound and why she doesn’t see any adults, other than the guards. The author introduces a new character when a captive boy named Rupert gives Gwen some food. He’s punished for this act of kindness, but he becomes another ally for her. However, Rupert tells her a big lie, and Gwen must decide if she’s willing to forgive him.
What didn’t work as well:
This story feels like several chapters from one larger book. Readers must know for themselves what’s already happened. The book’s ending simply stops the action, so readers will need to read the third one to continue the story. Also, it’s unclear why the author called the wolf Puppy in the first book but changed it to Sunrise in the second.
The final verdict:
You should read Wolf Girl first, since this book picks up immediately where the first book ended. Readers may be disappointed with the plot’s resolution, but in the end, this book is a fun, fast-paced story.

The author truly delivers an exhilarating adventure with 'Wolf Girl 2: The Escape', picking up right where the first book left off with our amazing protagonist, Gwen. If you're looking for a story packed with heart, high stakes, and a protagonist you can't help but root for, then dive right into this fantastic sequel! From the very first page, the action grabs you by the hand and doesn't let go. Gwen's world is turned upside down when she's snatched from the wild and thrown into the grim reality of a prison camp. The opening image of her howling to her beloved dogs as they fall behind is genuinely heartbreaking and sets the stage for a thrilling escape mission. The immediate danger and separation from her loyal pack – Sunrise, Brutus, Zip, Nosey, Tiny and Eagle – creates a powerful emotional pull that will have readers desperate for her reunion with them. What makes this book so compelling is not just the non-stop action, but the unbreakable spirit of Gwen herself. After four years alone, she's a survivor, resourceful and courageous, and her unique connection to the wild is expertly woven into her character. You can feel her fierce determination to break free and find her human family, all while navigating the challenges of a new environment and the uncertainty of other kids in the camp. Will they be allies or enemies? This adds another layer of intrigue to an already gripping plot. This book is a brilliant read for anyone who loves adventure, strong animal bonds, and a hero who embodies resilience and the true meaning of freedom. It's an inspiring tale that will leave young readers cheering for Gwen and all her wild friends!

It's been four whole years since Wolf Girl has heard a human voice, so when she hears men's voices on the edge of the bush where she has been living with her pack, she races towards them....

They are as surprised as she is, but they aren't the type of people she was hoping for. They throw her in the back of a truck with bars on the windows and she stares back at her pack running after her. Soon they are out of sight and she is taken behind the high walls of a prison like building. Where is she? Who are these people?

Soon, after an escape attempt she is put in another cell, this time in the dark with a little straw for a bed. But she's not alone. She can hear other children. What's going on?

In the meantime, her pack are tracking her. Her eagle too is on the hunt for her friend.

When Wolf Girl learns news of her parents, she is desperate to find them. Could they really be close by, after all of these years?

Another escape attempt, with the help of her pack and a new friend, Wolf Girl cannot let the chance to see her parents again slip through her fingers.

Another episode in this thrilling new series. An easy read, perfect for reluctant readers, it has everything. Animals, action, a character we can cheer on and baddies we can boo at. Again we are left at a What's next? cliffhanger, ready for Wolf Girl 3.

Illustrations on almost every page break up the text, urging you to read more. Mystery is everywhere. Who are the children? Who are the people holding them prisoner and why? Are Wolf Girl's parents only a stone throw away?

The story follows on from the previous book heroine Gwen as she is taken away in a dark van people she trapped and tortured and starving then her animal friends come to save her while tiny gets the keys from Baldy's office. Will she escape?

I found the book to be very captivating, I was so caught up in the storey wondering if Gwen would escape and reunite with her pack and find her family. I also thought she was being delusional by thinking that she wasn't in a cell and she probably thought Rupert wasn't real like he was a hologram and probably thought that it was all a dream or she thought she was in a coma for soooo long.
