Capital City Characters #2

Dolls, Dames, and Danger

Rate this book
Rebellion, alcohol, and crowded bars are seldom a good combination. Mix in four sinister bounty hunters motivated by greed and what started out as an innocent night of fun around town for three young friends turns into something else.

That something else is personal for hardboiled Inspector Thomas Sullivan and corrupt Chief of Police Markeson as they join forces to take back what is theirs.

Violence, deception, and an end of innocence are the result as the two cynical cops take the law into their own hands in this crime noir novella.

Another typical night in Capital City on the frozen planet Beta Prime.

Science fiction and classic crime novels have long been favorites of author K.C. Sivils. A fan of past noir masters such as Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, Sivils also enjoys the current generation of storytellers like Matt Abraham, Renee Pawlish and Alex P. Berg.

The combination of film noir and science fiction in director Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi classic Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep into the masterful Harrison Ford vehicle Blade Runner encouraged him to consume as much of both genre’s as possible.

When not working at his real job, Sivils enjoys his family, his dogs, writing and rocking out to classic rock bands like the Rolling Stones, New Wave rockers The Cars, and the Godfathers of Punk, the Ramones.

Book 2 in the Capital City Characters, Dolls, Dames and Danger is fast-paced and lethal, with several dolls and a couple of dames, lots of shoot-em-ups, and several new bad guys. An interesting continuation of Friends in Low Places, and those characters introduced to us there are well defined here, with a few new friends added in for spice. Again, a perfect definition of Future Noir. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. Looking very much forward to finishing the series.Reviewed on Goodreads on Feb 1, .2021

Dolls, Dames and Danger - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Sully finds out the hard way, that being a parent doesn't come with a user guide or app, when his daughter Katrina, part human and part augmented clone, gets persuaded to come clandestinely to the Inspector's durisdiction on the frozen planet of Beta Prime, by Sully's 'super-clone' partner, Sarah and Chief Markeson's cyborg inamorata (the 'Thelma' to her 'Louise'), the lovely Jennifer.

K.C. Sivils brings a sympathetic, intelligent snapshot of how on any world, past or present, those who are different may get discriminated against, or abused in one way or another... especially in this case, where the three women are 'illegals' - thus more valuable for their body parts, skillsets and as marketable commodities or prizes for a determined bounty-hunter.

What starts out as an innocent night on the town, turns potentially deadly, leaving Sully, Markeson and Father Nathan in a frantic race to the rescue....will they make it in time?

Inspector Thomas Sullivan has few folks that he calls friends and even fewer that he holds dear. So, when bounty hunters threaten the two ladies that he treasures more than life itself, things get messy. There’s the law, and then there’s justice. And, the two don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

Sivils’ second novella in the Capital City Characters series, Dolls, Dames, and Danger highlights the female support characters. It also shows us Sully’s softer side and his total lack of understanding of the female psyche.

This book has everything you’ve come to expect from an Inspector Thomas Sullivan story. Sivils delivers once again. And, kudos to his cover designer.

5 out of 5 stars.

Sully's daughter comes to visit Beta Prime. She's a clone like Sarah and together with Jennifer, Masterson's AI girlfriend they go out in the nightlife. Bounty hunters are looking for them and catch them. Then Sully and Markeson get angry and hunt them. Another fantastic SF Noir thriller from K C Sivils.

Perfect noir style for this book. The author gives us the background on the women in Sully’s life. It is not an easy life for them. Watching over their shoulder at all times is essential to their survival. Combine that with the environment and laws in Capital City…

It makes for a nonstop action story. There is familial love which bonds the characters combined with the gruff Inspector Sullivan to seal the deal.

Certainly an excellent read!
