THE ENDING SERIES After The Ending Into The Fire Out Of The Ashes Before The Dawn The Ending Series Prequel Novellas World A Collection of Stories
Out Of The Ashes is book three in The Ending series by Lindsey Fairleigh and Lindsey Pogue. This book/series has left me completely breathless. I feel like I just ran a marathon. (Or maybe that’s because I frequently read while on the treadmill!) I have loved this series from the beginning and that has not changed, maybe even gotten stronger, as this third book takes us deeper than ever before into the minds and hearts of the characters I have so grown to love.
We start right out where the previous book ended. Dani and Zoe have been rescued from the clutches of the Colony and from Clara, but not without damage. Dani is severely injured, both emotionally and physically. Her arm is broken, she is battered and bruised, and her ability is off line. Zoe, though, has suffered by the hands of Clara. Her memory is gone. She doesn’t recognize anyone, the woman she was is gone. As the weeks pass, she grows to trust everyone again but can’t bear to look into Jake’s eyes knowing he is looking for the woman he fell in love with, not this new person, the woman she is now.
The group wants to put as much distance as possible as quickly as possible between them and the colony. They decide to go back to Jason, Zoe and Dani’s home town, Bodega Bay. On the way they pass through Lake Tahoe where they meet up with some of their friends and make a startling discovery. I want to say here, that although it is not necessary, I am so very glad I read the prequels first. I already had the back story on something that happens here that added so much to my understanding of what happened.
I am so impressed with this group of people. They are challenged at every turn as they travel week after week. These people that like me have grown so accustomed to cars, computers, cell phones, and every other modern convenience, are now living the life of survivalists. Animals plays such a big part of these books. They do all their traveling on horseback and with Dani’s ability to communicate with the animals, their relationship with them is a very close one. The horses love them and will do anything to protect them.
They are forced to travel through the desert, going without water for long periods of time. They have to constantly be on the lookout for crazies. But along the way their relationship with one another becomes stronger than ever. Dani and Zoe’s lifelong friendship holds true, even though Zoe has lost her memory. The bond and the love is still there.
There are many secrets kept and there is loss and heartbreak along the way. But there is also love and friendship. Our two couples, Jason and Dani, and Jake and Zoe, grow stronger than ever with some very sweet sigh worthy moments. Along the way, the group plans out what they hope could be a good plan for their futures. A place to settle down and prosper, be happy, be safe. But so many obstacles are put in their paths. And of course, there is a big reveal and a new situation arises right at the end.
This series has kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning and this book was no different. I know the next book, Before The Dawn, is in the works and for me it can’t get here fast enough. This series is simply incredible and I just can’t say enough about it. So I hope you will consider giving it a try. I hope you fall in love with it the way I have.
WTF was that ending?? And now I have to wait a few months for the next book in the series...UGH.
Yoo Hooooo....Ms Fairleigh....*waving hand ---- I would LOVE an ARC RIGHT NOW!! ;-)
So, again we follow the story of Zoe and Dani and it looks like they finally are ready to settle down and will hopefully be out of the danger...but really? Now what kind of Apocalypse book would be without drama and safety?
This one is told from the POV of Dani, Zoe and now we get a look into Jake's head!
I can't wait for the next one to learn more of what is really going on.
Hold your breath, take a running start and get ready to be cannonballed right into the action! Out of the Ashes by that dynamic writing duo of Lindsey Fairleigh and Lindsey Pogue is another multi-faceted, white-knuckle tale of life after the end of the world as we know it. Zoe is back, her memory gone and hope is fading for the return of her over-the-top personality and determination. Even Dani can’t get through to her and Jake is suffering at the loss of the woman he loves. Their trek is getting more treacherous, danger lurks around every corner, from the unbearable heat and drought of the desert, to the discovery that someone among them may be a programmed pawn playing on the General’s evil team.
Dani is struggling with an addiction that can drive her mad, in denial and suffering with only her animals for comfort. Heroes will die, but there is still a renewal of life that comes out of the ashes of death. Powers become stronger, sharper and an aid to survival, but even they can be dangerous if misused. The group takes on new survivors, while losing others, but still they continue on.
Will their journey never end? Will they find a safe haven in their hometown of Bodega Bay? Will memories of their previous lives become a comfort or will they fester and leave a bittersweet aftertaste? The end of their journey hopefully grows near as only true grit keeps them going in the face of trouble and uncertainty.
The two Lindseys have done it again! Operating like one mind, they have put even more suspense and action into their already emotionally grueling series, The Ending. Digging even deeper into each character’s past, these people come to life and become even more memorable. Each scene is filled with vivid details, high emotion and tension as the reader is pulled ever deeper into the maze of twists and subplots faced by our heroes. The authors have painted a sense of community and loyalty that survives all obstacles while keeping the tension high, the pace flowing like a raging river one moment and slowing to a gentle stream the next with perfect timing. I loved single page more than the last, well, except for the one that says: The End.
I was fortunate enough to receive this copy from Lindsey Fairleigh and Lindsey Pogue in exchange for my honest review. I'm still thinking back on all that happened and am grateful for their generosity!
Series: The Ending - Book 3 Publication Date: August 21, 2014 Publisher: L2 Books Print Length: 423 pages Genre: NA Romantic Post-Apocalyptic Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Let me preface this review by saying that I adore this series as a whole--I've been following it from the moment I was sent the ARC of the first book--but this installment to the series wasn't my favorite. It's been more than a year since I read the second book in The Ending series, so going into Out of the Ashes by Lindsey Fairleigh and Lindsey Pogue, I had a bit of a hard time sinking in. Like Zoe, one of the main characters of the series, I felt like I had a form of amnesia. I couldn't remember what had happened previously in the series, particularly near the ending of the second book, and so being dropped into the fast-paced and somewhat alarming beginning of the third book, I was rightfully confused. It took me a while to sort out what was happening and to remind myself of previous plot points... and in that way, I felt very close to Zoe in her struggle with trying to remember her past. It was an unexpected and strange sisterhood between us throughout the book.
Technically speaking, the book was exceedingly well written. I didn't run into any grammatical errors, typos, or punctuation problems. The characters were all distinct, easy to love or hate respectively, and the story moved along at a steady pace. The setting was rich with detail but not so much as to bog down the narrative, and overall, I enjoyed the book as a whole.
There was only one problem.
I slogged through the book. It was odd how slowly I moved through the story--and it took me till nearly the end of the book to figure out why. There were no big battles or dramatic plot points. The majority of the book was spent delving into the character's emotional states and the relationships between the members of their group... but very little was spent in any sort of action scene or on any sort of big battle with a nemesis. It was all very interesting--don't get me wrong.. but by the end of the book, I was left feeling that nothing had happened. As much as I enjoyed spending time with the characters, by the end I was glad to finally be done and to set the book aside and move on. I'm even a little hesitant now to pick up the fourth book, though I will be doing so shortly... this installment just wasn't as tension filled as I'd come to expect--although, thank goodness, there was a lot more of the romance present that had been missing from the second book in the series.
If you like post-apocalyptic stories filled with special abilities and great characters, I highly recommend this series, even if this wasn't my favorite out of the bunch.
I love these books, and I've recommended them to a number of people. The storyline is a bit hard to follow at times due to an almost overwhelming number of characters, but it's pulled together so well that I still give it four stars. There is quite a bit of offensive language in it, but it would ruin the character's credibility and continuity if left out. Each book ends with a cliffhanger and leaves me desperate for more. The characters are so well-written that you feel like you know them and know how they'll react to different circumstances. While that may make it seem predictable, the plotline has so many twists thrown in that it keeps you guessing anyway. Obviously this series is a work of fiction, but you find yourself nodding along and thinking to yourself, "yeah, under those circumstances, unrealistic though they may be, this is plausible." I love stories that make me think that way. I love the detail that's out into the daily routines of the characters. When the world is attempting to rebuild, there's a major learning curve, and I feel like these stories portray that very well.
Wow, is all I have to say, the wait to read this beauty was definitely worth it.
This novel continues the tale of best friends Zoe and Dani and their group through a world effected by a virus. This new addition is a wonderful way to further the series, the characters have grown so much, you forget that they are much older than the reader assumes, the fact that they are adults and they have hopes and dreams that can't be reached pulls at the heart strings and makes this novel so much more relateable.
The cliff hanger at the end leaves the reader in a sense of panic and dread, how much more can this group of survivers take!? As always L2 have written a wonderful book, the writing flows as does each scene, the characters interact easily and each are relateable in their own way.
A great book, definitely worth the wait, I can't wait for the next one! Highly reccommend this series to anyone who is a fan of, well any genre, great books!
It's hard to keep spoilers out of the review, so I will have to keep it short and sweet. This was another great epic entry into the series. The roller coaster ride of the new world centered around the lives of Dani and Zoe is a wild one with twists, turns, and unexpected drops. We no longer have young ladies, we have women of the new frontier leading the way back to their hometown. As secrets and lies are uncovered along the way, so are there beautiful revelations and more. As usual, I am eagerly anticipating the next entry into the series. Things are never tied up in a bow After the Ending!
It kept me interested the whole time and had great character development. Duller than then the previous books it set everything into perspective and set it up very rapidly for the next book in the series. Not my favorite in the series but I’m still enjoying it.
Not my favorite book in the series, but it does give background to some characters. The plot is not anywhere near as active as the first two books; this one is mostly just about story.
Free from the Colony, Zoe, Dani and their crew of other lost souls continue to make their way across the country. They are in search of a place to call home, a safe place where they don't have to sleep with one eye open anymore and be able to try to build a life. Zoe is still struggling with the effects of whatever happened to her during her escape from Clara the psycho girl who keeps trying to kill her and Dani seems to be losing herself to her animal friends. In addition to the every day struggles to survive Dani struggles with the knowledge of what her mother had done and that she is still alive. This knowledge is dangerous, more dangerous than she can possibly imagine.
This series just keeps getting better as layers start to peel away to reveal what happened to create this world, and how those who survived can continue to live their lives. These characters aren't invincible either, you will see them bend to the breaking point or lose themselves all together, this is a touch and violent new world and they are lucky to have survived as long as they have but their struggles are far from over. Like the other books the action and the character building gets equal play and doesn't disappoint. My only wish for these books is that I didn't have to wait for the next one but even still I am excited and gripping the edge of my seat to see what new challenge this motley crew will have to face in order to survive.
So this is the third book in the ‘The Ending’ series. This one didn’t have as much action as the others. As I see it, it was more of the calm before the storm book. So a lot of things were uncovered and found out in this book. We find out who the monitors are, Jason, Zoe, Dani and Grayson are all back home in Bodega Bay. Things seem quite pleasant, until of course the cliff hanger at the end. That’s when you know things are about to get serious in the 4th and final book of the series. Welp time to see how this series ends.
Story continues right where book 2 leaves off and keeps the storyline going strong. You continue to learn more about the characters and their pasts. They are moving forward to the coast and looking forward to settling down which seems to bring more problems into their group. The story is still very engaging, keeps you on your toes and you can't wait till 2015 to find out what is coming next. Great series.
Not my normal read but after book 1 had to read 2...and then 3. I really like the characters and the story is interesting and not predictable. Will definitely read book 4 when it is released.
What I love about an already complete series is to got straight into the next book, desperately needing to know what happened to Zoe.
In what feels like a vicious circle, the girls are separated again, however, in a very complex psychological way. It is hard to see Zoe suffering as she tries to identify herself in the memories of her friends, and heartbreaking to see Jake lost and in turmoil through it all. The plot twist is pretty cliché, however, it is also novel in how it came about, so I liked that.
As some of the other reviews mentioned, this book did have a lot less action than the previous two books, but it was still a good read. In no time, I was already getting strung up on Book 4.
I was questioning how this story could be 4 books worth when I started reading book 2 but this book pleasantly surprised me. There were a few twists of fate that were bitter sweat in terms of character arches and those we lost will be missed. I'll try not to give spoilers. I think Jason, Jake and their character arcs improved with this book and set up for some more potential growth in book 4. I don't know if settling anywhere for good, connected to any colony, is a good idea and I question how the colony storyline will end. Also, Dr Wesley would have to be the most selfish character I have ever read and I don't know how ANYONE could like her but anyway... onto number 4
Again we find ourselves in a pickle. Though Dani is finally with her friends, now Zoe has her own problems to deal with. It’s so interesting to see her situation, making me think about what I would do in her friends place. Must be incredibly difficult having to deal with it and in Zoe’s place others seeing her like there’s something very wrong with her. I really like this book and see the characters reactions, this book felt a bit more slower and reading the characters relationships become more stable.
I’m sad to say that’s I’m really disappointed in this book. It really didn’t pull me in and make me want to read it all in one sitting like the previous two. There was no excitement, adventure, or character development. It was just so sloooow sometimes and really choppy other times. I was unimpressed and won’t be reading the final book. Bummer! I really wanted to love it as much as the other two!
Loved it. As with many series, I adore the first book and like the second, and the third is *chef’s kiss* fantastic. The authors do an AMAZING job fleshing out and maintaining such a large, ensemble cast of characters. For the first book, it was easier to keep everything straight because we had two groups; and even in the second, there were split locations. Everyone all at once could be overwhelming, but the authors are great at the subtle nuances that make this large group work.
Book #3 picks up from where book #2 left off, in the middle of rescuing Zoe. Total twist in the end of book #2 leading to book #3, can't say I mind it. The twist readily hyped up the story and brought out true colors of character. The book kept me in the edge of my seat. Excited to ready the last book, book #4, but also sad since their series has been amazing.
The story continues right where book 2 leaves off and keeps going strong. Lots more to learn about the characters and their pasts as they move towards the coast looking forward to finally settling down. Not as much action in this one as it's more focused on character development.
Another cliff hanger ending! Onto the next book in this great apocalyptic series.
Still hooked after two books - had to keep going to find out the rest of the story. Where book two leaves off you are deeply engaged and invested in the story of the wayward survivors.
More surprises and adventures await and you find yourself catching your breath as you wait for problems to be solved and solutions to be discovered.
3 books in I'm still enjoying this series. There are still things I wish were a bit better fleshed out and some I wish they didn't spend so much time on but the world building has only improved with more time. I still think this is a very unique apocalypse series and I'm really invested in what happens next.
This series is BEYOND INCREDIBLY AMAZING!!!:-). Getting to become more in tune with each of the main characters and getting to know new ones too is FANTASTIC!!!:-). Soooo many layers of secrets, more at each turn….lots of steamy and beautiful romance!!! Cannot WAIT to continue on this journey!!!:-). LOVED IT!!:-)
These books show true friendship. The good and the bad. Living through the apocalypse can certainly strain relationships, and our besties in this book have their moments.
In some ways this book was different from the rest. It seemed more psychological and less thrilling overall. I like the multi-character story telling and how in depth Zoe and Dani’s characters are detailed. The ending was a bit unexpected and I look forward to the next book in the series.
A totally different perspective on the apocalypse. The characters are very good and the story blends each one in a great way so that they become real to you. The story is interesting it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Great read.
