Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Rupert and Gwen led the pack deep into the woods with the soldiers chasing them. They were desperate to escape and continue to search for both sets of parents who’d been lost in the war. When Zip was injured, Gwen knew to search for sage bush – made into a paste, it would stave off infection. When they were confronted by a pack of cats, they knew they were outnumbered. Could they escape them? Who could they trust? And would they find the truck which had taken the parents away?

Wolf Girl 3: The Secret Cave is the 3rd in the Wolf Girl series by Aussie author Anh Do, and once again it’s a fast-paced adventure for Gwen and her pack. An excellent story for the young and young at heart! Highly recommended.

Gwen’s pack has a new member, Rupert, who we met in The Great Escape. Picking up shortly after where we left off, Gwen and Rupert are keen to find the trucks that drove away from the camp. They’re hoping their parents are amongst the adult workers that are being transported … somewhere.

Along the way they are chased by soldiers and meet Ma Taylor, a cat lady who proves that some adults in this world are still trustworthy.

Between the chase sequence that led to a suspension bridge and the workers in the cave with mine carts, I couldn’t help getting Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom vibes from this book.

The attention to detail isn’t quite as spot on in this book. An example was when Zip was being carried in a sling by Sunshine so he could rest a bit longer when the pack left Ma Taylor and her cats. Although he was supposedly still resting, a few pages later he was walking at the back of the pack with Nosey. Soon after, Zip is pictured being carried in the sling by Sunshine again.

The first two books in this series were illustrated by Jeremy Ley. Taking over from Ley in this book is Lachlan Creagh. While I could see differences between the ways Gwen and Rupert in particular were pictured by each artist, I still enjoyed the illustrations.

The dogs, wolf and eagle remain adorable.

However, I’m getting pretty annoyed that dogs keep getting injured. Zip, who was injured in the second book, was hurt another two times in this one. I’m really hoping that action and a sense of danger doesn’t always result in animals being harmed in this series.

The story is still interesting and there is another cliffhanger ending but this book lacked a spark for me. I enjoyed the last two books in the series but I found myself not really caring about the characters so much.

Something that annoys me about the Wolf Girl books is that the illustrations are a huge part of the story but the illustrator doesn’t have their name on the cover (it’s on the back of this one). The illustrator is also different for this book so the characters looked a bit different.

There are plenty of Wolf Girl fans at my school though and I know they’ll gobble it up and be hungry for book 4.

Another exciting, fast-paced episode of Wolf Girl, with Gwen getting closer to knowing what has happened to her parents and finding out why people have been taken away in trucks by the soldiers. Quite violent with some scary scenes, so would recommend best for mature Year 6 readers and upwards.
Definitely want to read the next book.

A good continuation of the series with non-stop story and a cliffhanger that makes it a no-brainer to go and get number 4! A few little inconsistencies with little plot points that I think probably could have been easily fixed, make it seem like the writing of it was rushed, but don't affect the overall story too much.

The full five stars from the (now) ten year old in the house!
Without spoilers, the ending did have her tears, but of the more bittersweet variety.
I love how much she enjoys this series, and that she insists I read each one after her- again, I just cannot recommend this series highly enough for young readers! There’s action, adventure, high stakes, but it’s also just a lot of fun.

Soldiers are right behind Wolf Girl and her pack. Now there are new members to their furry family, the stakes are even higher. With approaching soldiers and flying bullets, Gwen and her gang have to work together to be able to escape.

Their getaway leaves someone injured and needing help Gwen can't give, and they are suddenly under another attack. It's not soldiers this time, but a large group of hissing, snarling cats! Dogs and wolves may be bigger, but they are completely outnumbered. Gwen's group soon meet the cat's keeper, who not only calls off the cats, but helps the injured and hungry pack.

The pack enjoy some rare time to relax after fleeing Gwen's captors, until information about Gwen's parents arises. Still sad she'd lost a chance of finding them, she leaps at news that they could be nearby. But what they find is so much worse than expected. Many others are needing rescue, and Gwen wonders if her parents are among them? With a daring and dangerous plan, Gwen does her best to find out.

Dropped straight back into the action, Gwen and her pack face one danger after another. With a new member of the pack along (Rupert - a boy from the camp), tensions arise between the pack members, but Gwen does her best to smooth things out between her human and hairy friends.

With a touch of Indiana Jones action, this episode in this fast-moving series doesn't disappoint. Almost every page has an illustration that pumps with tension, setting or characters. Can't wait for Wolf Girl 4!

In this nail-biting book, Gwen's long and arduous search for her family continues with renewed urgency. Just when she feels tantalizingly close to a breakthrough, the ever-present threat of the pursuing soldiers intensifies, closing in on her and her unique pack. The stakes are raised even higher when her beloved companion, Zip, suffers an injury, forcing the pack to slow down and making them even more vulnerable. This pivotal moment leaves Gwen facing agonizing questions: Who, amidst this perilous journey, can she truly trust? And how will she possibly keep her beloved, loyal pack safe when they are being relentlessly hunted by dangerous enemies? Does this spell disaster for the one and only Wolf Girl? This author masterfully weaves a narrative brimming with suspense and heart. The pacing is relentless, making it an absolute page-turner that young readers will devour. Gwen's unwavering determination and her fierce loyalty to her animal family are truly inspiring. The bond she shares with Zip, Sunrise, and the rest of her pack is the emotional core of the story, making every challenge they face feel deeply personal and urgent. The action sequences are vividly described, keeping the tension high, and the question of who Gwen can truly trust adds a compelling layer of mystery. The author delivers another empowering and utterly thrilling instalment that will leave readers breathless and eagerly awaiting Gwen's next adventure. 'Wolf Girl 3: The Secret Cave' is a testament to courage, loyalty, and the unbreakable bonds of family – a definite five-star read for young adventurers!

This story continues with Gwen continuing to search for her family, with her pack of dogs. Kids loved this in my class but didn’t really hold me. Took me a while to finish as I wasn’t interested.

I loved this book because I have already read wolf girl 1 and wolf girl 2, and I found that #3 was most interesting because it has a lot more detail and information, also because Wolf Girl is my favourite series.

Wolf Girl – The Secret Cave, Anh Do
The third book takes us deeper into the story of a world that seems to have been taken over by a corrupt military. Great series. ****
