Dragon Guard #1

Dragon Trials

Rate this book
The stories say that the dragons saved humanity, but all they left were ashes, cinder, and a new breed of human. Welcome to the Outlands, where nobody cares if you scream.

Rogue, Fighter, survivor. I have many roles, but my only purpose is to protect my loved ones and make a better life for them. It’ll take one more job to make my dream a reality.

But fate, the uncooperative bitch, stands ready to twist the knife.

Taken by Dragon bloods, the better-looking result of human and dragon unions, I’m caged and forced to fight in the arena for their amusement.

They want me to bleed, but I’ll be damned if I’ll kiss the sand for them

But there is more to the Arena’s purpose than meets the eye, and I’m beginning to believe that all the stories I’ve been told may be nothing more than fiction. With the help of a man with eyes like flame, and his arrogant, incorrigible brother, I may just survive to find out the truth.

The Bloods are close to executing an awful plan, and the only way to stop them is to escape. My family wait for me. My dream awaits, and freedom will be mine.

A kick-ass fantasy with a slow burn why-choose romance. Fans of Rise of the Iliri and War of the Gods will love The Dragon Guard series.

So I haven't read a book from this author since she killed off one of her characters in a series for no reason at all and then added some completely random guy like we weren't going to notice. So yea, I stayed away.

I saw this book, the cover looked nice, the blurb looked nice so I decided to dive in. It was pretty good, I like the relationship the heroine has with her friend. The guys in the harem weren't so bad either. I also enjoy the plot so so far everything is going well.

Can't wait for the rest of the series.

Chronicles or Arcana meets Mad Max and it's pretty epic.

The first installment of the other new Debbie Cassidy series Dragon Guard was a solid first book. We follow Anya, a failed experiment between Draki and humans, as she is captured with other Skins and sent to the pit to entertain their much more beautiful and perfect looking cousins, the Dragon Bloods.

Anya was a hot blooded kind of heroine. She likes to fight and get excited at the ideas of slamming her fist in someone's else face. But there is more than that to her: she loves her family, she would do anything for her best friend and wish her world was a better place.

The bond between her and Helgi, her best friend and partner in crime, was beautiful. Both women had each other's back, they would drink together, fight together but also run together. Helgi was a real part of Anya's life and not just a female sidekick here to please the feminist part of us. and while they are forced to separate, you bet they will find a way to get back to each other.

Out of the two new series, this one is by far my favorite. Once again, I end up mixing all of her universe -especially when it comes to some recurring and guest characters having the same names- but I am especially excited to read more of this story.

Thank you Debbie for providing me this ARC.

This book is so good! I recieved the ARC a few hours ago and I thought I would read the first chapter and come back to it later. Nope... I got sucked in. I really like everything about this book. The story, the world, and especially the characters.

So, what's it about?

The FMC gets captured and made to fight in gladiator type games. She ends up in the company of a dragon trying to save another. Her family is back home and she just wants to get back to them. But fate has other plans.

It has drama, action, and connections that just won't quit. I can hardly wait for book two of this series!

I am providing an honest review for this ARC.

MUST READ DRAGON RH OF THE SEASON................... this book was obtained through an ARC FB group. all thoughts are my own. i have been a fan girl of DC for over a year and a half now and have read all her work. It's no suprise to anyone that I adored this series like i do all her others.

Book 1 of the Debbie Cassidy series Dragon Guard was a brilliant engaging action packed first book. ANYA our MC, is a mix between Draki and humans

Anya was a tall, muscles non stereotypical MC, she intimidates a lot of men easily, she isn't flustered to get her hands dirty and makes the hard calls in battle when needed. but she is more than just a warrior, she adopted a bunch of kids and has a true maternal side.

win:Female friendship with the "side kick"Helgi, the women grew up together, are there for each other and genuinely take each others thoughts and considerations seriously. i really enjoyed reading about their friendship.
Out of the two latest series that have been released via ARC readings i cannot make up my heart about which one i like more. I am heavily leaning with this one because DRAGONS.

This book is the first in yet another series by this very prolific author. I am not complaining, mind you, because I generally am immediately drawn into any book by this author, and this latest is no exception. One of the aspects of this book I really loved what the friendship between Anya and Helgi. There aren’t enough girl friendships in UF/RH books, and I don’t know why. These friendships help make a main character more realistic, IMO, and less like a woman who doesn’t like other women. Anyway, this was a great book with a unique universe, and I loved how Anya was also not the “perfect” woman; she loves to fight, drink, and her body is not “womanly.” Don’t think unattractive, BTW. I was intrigued with her past, and how it was revealed a little at a time, but there are still more secrets everywhere. I can’t wait to see what’s coming next. Highly recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

(+) slow burn
(+) reverse harem
(+) Dragons!!
(++) hot dragons … cough… Vesper.... cough… ;-)
(+) kick-ass heroine
(+) typical Debbie Cassidy
(+/-) world building was okay, but I felt more information about the "bloods" might have been better, because there were some parts where long explanations were needed
(-) big chunks of information as "big revelation" for the heroine, delivered mostly in some lengthy dialogues
(- - )I feel like can already foresee one big revelation. Not good.
(-) story felt very packed -> book could have been longer
(+/-) feels like a longer prelude/set-up
--> potential for 4 Stars after finishing the series

This was my first book by this author and it won't be my last....I will have to check out her back list
As a first in a series it did a pretty good job of giving us enough information to understand the world but not overload the reader. Anya was great and pretty kick ass and am looking forward to the next book and finding out more about the Dreki

What did I just read??!! Probably one of the best books of my life! I was so on edge the entire book, barely breathing as I read through the action to see what happened next. Fantastic doesn’t cover it. Phenomenal is a drastic understatement. If you don’t read this book you are missing out on a life changing adventure.

That wasn't half bad like the plot and the setting were pretty decent. There wasn't as much romance as I'd expected, but it worked in favor of the story. Five stars :>

I adore Debbie Cassidy.... every series she produces is just so different from the rest, and this addition is no different! Taking a sharp turn from Urban Fantasy or even the Paranormal Romance, we venture into Fantasy, finding a dystopian like world ravaged by time, magic and a war no one saw coming.

Misunderstandings and desperation have created four very distinct types of people in this new and dangerous world, the Skins and Bloods, and the Dreki and Humans from which they descended from. It's complicated, messed up and bloody, and it only gets worse when the war that has been held at a stalemate on the Eastern border is brought to life again as the Bloods devise a way to win.... at the expense of the Skins. Like I said, it's messed up, but oh so fascinating!

Anya, a Skin by birth (part Dreki, part Human), is a kick butt heroine just trying to survive with her family and her best friend. When a mission goes awry, she is thrown into the deep end of a saga she can barely grasp, yet somehow is down right in the middle of. So begins a tale that weaves through mythology, history and the lands, dancing with magic and gritty humor. It's rough, often funny and very, very bloody. Cheers!

*I received an ARC of this book and I am thrilled to share my honest opinion!*

Pros:
~ Very well written.
~ Atypical FMC, I rather love her.
~ Helgiel.... #FriendGoals.
~ Foreshadowing hints at what is coming, but this is Debbie Cassidy.... so it probably won't fall out like we think.
~ Well edited.

Cons:
~ Some parts are a bit confusing, but clear on a reread.

Perspective
~ First Person, Single POV

Ending Type
~ Cliffhanger

Rating
~ R to mature

Romantic Dynamic
~ MMMF or MMMMF

Character Age Range
~ 22+

My Final Verdict on Dragon Trial

This book holds all the earmarks of an Epic Fantasy, while holding tight to the ideals of a slow burn Reverse Harem. Gritty, action filled and fairly funny, this is the perfect escape.

A very intriguing and alluring introduction to a new series.
Anya is a Skin, looking human but with dragon scales on her back. Taking up dangerous gigs brings the food on their family table - for her dad and the other four kids in their household. Her last one however brings her to kidnapping by the Dragon Bloods, fighting in the arena for survival and entertainment of the Bloods. When she manages to escape with two Dreki lords, it's time to reveal some hidden truths and get on the path of fight for freedom - and trying to avoid the apocalypse.
I love this new world, the dragon magic, elements of Norse mythology, and hints of reverse harem heat to come (or at least some crazy romance to come). Anya is a kickass, her personality is calling to me, I would even call her my own blood type. And the other characters are excellent as well, regardless of who we are talking about: Helgi with her mind (mostly) narrowed to just one thing (guess what), Dante wrapped in secrets and with disarming charm, or Vesper with his irritating arrogance, yet irresistible pull. Fast paced story with many twists, lots of action, and promise to bring more, intense as hell, is the hook that already keeps me addicted and impatient for the next book.

So Debbie has never failed to amaze me. She writes these amazing worlds with strong, independent, crazy awesome female characters. I can say she didn’t break the streak with Dragon Trials. Anya is a beast, I loved reading her story! She is so much fun. She’s snarky, Loyal, strong, and intimidating to a normal man as she is on the taller side and a fighter.
Anya and Helgi’s friendship (more like sisterhood) is one of those things that will have you fist pumping for girl power. They have each other’s backs and willing to do the most for each other.
Dante. Vesper. Oh man, these men had me swooning hard core. I can’t remember if this is supposed to be an RH but by god I NEED her to have more than one man! Their dynamics with each other are so much fun to watch unfold. Dante is caring and truly showing his interest and care for her. Vesper is the lovable a-hole who you kinda wanna slap but also wanna push into the wall and shut him up. *wink wink*
This was a fun, interesting and different read. It is post apocalyptic and interesting as hell. Highly recommend!

what a ride

Jump in, buckle up, and hang on for the beginning of what appears to be an epic ride of a tale. Being the first book, the reader is introduced to the characters, their connections, the world they live in, the histories involved, and of course the politics. None of this drawn out in a way where it drags. There was enough action to keep you turning the page and, a few times, I even worried about the outcome of the current issue at the time. Ending in a cliffhanger, at least the next book is already out so there is no worries about waiting.

Debbie is one of the few RH authors that I always know will deliver. She writes amazing, kick ass, multi layered heroines, has great world building and the guys are always individuals in their own right and have wonderful chemistry with the heroine.

Dragon Trails is an absolutely fantastic start to a new series, with Anya battling her way up into my favourite Debbie heroine list. Her relationship with Hekginis an absolute highlight, too, and the positive portrayal of female friendship is so refreshing.

The chemistry with the guys we've met so far is sizzling and I can't wait for more!

Highly recommend!

I think this has an interesting premise, but for some reason I am not clicking with this one at the moment. I did finish it, but unfortunately it was not that engaging for me.
I am going to put this on the side and come back to the series at some point.

When I saw a new book by Debbie Cassidy I knew I had to read it, and when I read that it had dragons in it? Wow, just wow and it does not disappoint. Anya is one tough girl who has one weakness, people who need help and her family. When she finds herself in a horrible situation, she finds help from the one thing she has always been taught to fear. I am so excited to see what happens in this series

The plot is too driven by ridiculous coincidences and convenient events. I feel the authors hand too heavily in it. I’ll read on to see how badass her powers will get but the clues left so far probably lead where I think they do. I’m still interested to find out how she ended up where she is though..

I’m not very turned in by one of her companions at the moment. He’s too over the top arrogant and dismissive of her. Th first guy was alright though.

Everyone talks too much. The dialogue isn’t quite natural but also not the worst I’ve read. It’s bearable for now.

The book feels surprisingly short but I did start skimming halfway(?) through.

So I make a point not to read the blurbs of a Debbie Cassidy book. There’s no need. Once a book of hers comes out it’s an automatic buy. All I knew was it involved Dragons.

This book started a little bit slow for me only because I was trying to get my bearings which I hit at about the 6% mark. 😅😅😅 Very early. And the story just took off from there.

Anya is a Skin. Almost two hundred years ago some humans found a Grimoire and opened it. This opened a door into another world from where monsters invaded. Along with the monsters came dragons. These dragons helped the humans defeat these monsters. Along the way they procreated with humans forming hybrids known as Skins and Bloods. The Skins are mutated offspring and the Bloods are the beautiful ones. Skins usually have some “deformity” harkening to their dragon sides. Anya looks all human except for her back that is covered in scales. We learn that in this world the Bloods have all the power and the Skins are enslaved unless they live in the free territory. The Dragons live in another zone called the furtherlands. And the humans we learn are somewhere else all together. It’s all pretty segregated other than enslaved Skins living in Draco city and a war that is going on between the Dragons and the Bloods.

Through circumstances Anya and her best friend Helgi who live in this free territory are kidnapped and taken to the Blood’s city (Draco City). They and other skins are put on display and have to fight for the entertainment of the Bloods. The Blood’s goal is to cull the Skins and use the strongest to create an army and replace the Bloods on the frontline. Amongst other things. Because why of course should the Bloods get theirselves killed for their own agenda when they can force someone else to fight?

That’s sort of just the set-up. Sooo much happens after Anya is taken to Draco city. We follow Anya on this adventure and meet some other Skins and a couple of interesting Dragons (swooon!!) and we learn some intriguing things about Anya’s past. Of course she doesn’t know who her real parents are (classic) and she has a chain around her ankle that can’t be removed and some interesting abilities related to the Dragons she meets.

I felt like this book was too short or maybe I blew past the pages too quickly but I want more!!! I love Anya. She was bad-ass but also pretty normal. I liked that she was able to have her moments but then pull back and handle her business. I can’t wait to see what goes on with her possible love interests (plural). The world-building is great but I would have liked to learn more about Draco city and Oberon. Give Helgi a medal for being the best bff.

One downside is there’s a bit of predictability in terms of where I think this story is going. I’m hoping to be surprised in the next book but the way things are setting up that may not be the case. Notwithstanding that, the book is still an excellent read and Debbie Cassidy is a creative writer. I can’t believe I have to wait so long for the next book!!

Is it too late to review this book?

My first from this author, and I must say, definitely a pleasantly surprise.
Also, give me a good shifter dragon book and I get sucked right in.

***PLOT/WORLD***
This book's definitely a soft-magic system, as defined by the great Sanderson, and the worldbuilding is extremely shallow. Some passages are hard to follow, due to the lack of description or even perception from the MC. I'd love if the author gave us more details on the land and creatures from the forest.

Saying all that, I'm still pretty invested in the story. The "I don't know my real parents" trope was really ok for me, although it became easy to foresee the "not-so-big" revelation at the end of the second book. The relationship between the heroine and the three lords hooked me though, and I'm totally cheering for Anya and Vesper, they're so hot together.

***RELATIONSHIPS***

Anya & Helgi: probably one of the most beautiful, in-depth woman-woman friendship I've read so far. I truly hate when the heroine doesn't bestow any kind of sentiment to the same gender, or the "so called friend" is only there to make the heroine suffer or grow. It does not happen in this book.
I see a second character as strong as the MC, their relationship is not only told, but shown throughout the book. The readers can actually understand why the heroine would drive herself into any length of danger for her friend, because their bond are REAL. That's true love, and this reason only would easily give this book five stars.

Anya&Children: Unfortunately, the above cannot be replicated here. The heroine says multiple times how motherly-like she can be, how much she loves the kids and would do anything to save her step-siblings, but we rarely see any connection between them.

Anya&Vesper:

Anya&Dante:

Anyway, can't wait for the third book. Are we finally gonna have some extremellyhotsexwiththedragonshifters?

A lot of action, a lot of good relationship (Anya and Helgi were so close, they were nearly like sisters). And found family (literally) with a found father and found siblings was really sweet! The magic was rather unexplained but still didn't feel like a glaring hole. The feud between Bloods and Skins, despite sounding like gang names, was reminiscent of class system. I liked that the seemingly perfect (coded white) Bloods were the bad guys for once. Loved the mutations of the Skins that hinted at disability.

Granted it was really unpolished and there was a lot of telling instead of showing, but the plot was really well done so I am willing to forgive.

Lets hope I can find the second book for free somewhere. Until then, here's the spoiler ridden summary for my aged brain.

Another great start to a series!

So far Anya is ranking up next to Kenna (after the second book) from Fearless. I didn't really like Kenna at first and then later on she's pretty awesome... point is things can change.

I'm worried from what Dante said about her not wanting to mate... Well you don't know she's the same but my assumption is that she's the reincarnation of the original queen. Again that's just speculation you can draw your own opinion. The picture he painted was one of those heroines I just can abide... I'm going to do it on my own because somehow that means being strong... pusht there is nothing smart or strong about walking into a deadly situation without backup. So, I'm hoping this FMC doesn't turn into am idiot.

The world is sort of post-apocalyptic or maybe it's definitely! Hah. Change caused by an event and two new species born of human/Dreki. Sort of got a Madman behind one of the hellbent on world domination... you know the usual. It's a solid story.

What I liked the best (and basically turned it from 4 to 5 for me) are the characters. Even the supporting characters are very real to you. Helgi is amazing and it's such a relatable relationship! Even those characters that don't really stick around add depth to the story almost as if nothing is wasted.

Aside from that I believe fans and new readers of this author will enjoy the book.its not a cliffhanger, so you could stop at the end as it's a story in and of itself. There are unanswered questions to set up the next story. In case anyone actually reads this review!

Happy reading!!

I absolutely loved Dragon Trial!! Just when I think I have found my favorite series by Debbie, she comes up with another one. This is why she is one of my top favorite authors. She never disappoints, always entertaining me.

In the Dragon Trial we are introduced to Anya. She is a young woman living in the outlands with her family and sidekick Helgi. Anya and Helgi get by with the odd jobs that they do. But when her father wants them to move, Anya and Helgi have one more job up their sleeve to help for the journey. Little do they know that this last job is not what it seems. When she is captured along with Helgi, some mercenaries and a stranger their lives take on an even more dangerous turn. Forced into the Arena where they fight to the death. But there is more going on with the Draco, for these are not just games. Their scientists want the winners for something bad. It is up to Anya and the mysterious sexy stranger to figure out what that is before they loose their lives.

I tell you guys, I loved this!! The characters are well written, the plot was so dang interesting I did not stop reading until the end. I just could not put down my kindle. Once you get invested in Anya and her story, you are not going to want to stop. My suggestion, make sure you have a good couple of hours of peace and quiet. This story is one I highly recommend.
