I live in a cage.

Life outside The Wall was harsh and maybe even cruel sometimes, but it was real. I couldn't imagine any reason that I would ever want to return to the parody of life that they led within the city.
4.5 stars!
A great dystopian/post-apocalyptic story brimming with secrets, lies, and forbidden desires! Our heroine Maya has lived her entire life sheltered in Harbor City, led to believe that it is only The Wall that keeps her and the other citizens safe from the Contamination that decimated the human population by turning them into crazed beings. However after she, her best friend, and a Warden are forced to flee the city or die, they meet a group of humans who are living safely outside The Wall in a place that is supposed to be inhabitable. While the land and its creatures are wild, Maya and her fellow escapees find the outside liberating and quickly discover that life inside The Wall is anything but safe. As is typical for Susanne's writing, she delivers action, suspense, danger and yummy sexual tension. I cannot wait for more from our rebels as they attempt to take down The Wall!

My love for this world, these characters, and this series has been REVIVED. This is a new, revamped edition of Chained (Cage of Lies #1), which happens to be the very first book sent to me by an author for review on my blog Pooled Ink and omg how I freaked out when Susanne contacted me that day. Now I've read loads of her stories, including those she's co-written with her sister, and I am a forever fan.
I've genuinely been wanting to go back and re-read this dystopian series and just when I was ready to bust 'em out for a binge, I receive this new shiny edition. SO GOOD. I mean, I loved the original, but this one has a bit more edge and polish (I really loved the original books so I admit I was nervous about the revamp, but it hasn't changed anything too drastically so everything I loved was still there ♥). Still a crazy post-apocalyptic world, still badass and funny characters, still an action-packed plot written at a pace that will have you gasping and begging for more.
I've read her prequel series, Tainted Earth, which by the way remains unfinished and is KILLING ME, and it is so cool to go back to this one and notice all the little tie-ins and clues that honestly add a whole other layer onto the reading experience. The two series are connected, but standalone/separated by a 100 years, so you don't need to read both, but you'd be crazy not to!

Anything Susanne/Caroline is an instant read for me. Sadly, with this book, I wasn’t quite as hooked as other series.
This has all the usual dystopian elements with its own storyline - contamination/destruction of the outside world, a walled city, a council with suspect intentions, and a curious girl. We get to follow Maya and Taylor (her male BFF) on their journey outside the confines of their old caged life. This is where we meet Coal (yes please) and the real adventure begins.
I really enjoyed the side characters that we meet - Alicia, Laurie, Hunter and Kaloo. It has that found family thing going on and each character has more to them than just being there for the sake of the plot.
I loved how Maya wasn’t just a straight up badass. Usually I like my heroines that way, but for this story it made sense to have Maya be the way she is. She’s also pretty relatable.
”I groaned and threw an arm over my eyes. Six thirty still counts as the middle of the night as far as I'm concerned, you robotic early-rising bitch.”
In saying that there were a couple times her choices and thought processes grated on me, mainly when it comes to the Taylor/Coal situation. Example, she has a feeling Taylor (who she sees as a brother) has feelings for her and gets weird when he tries to hold her hand and stuff, but when Laurie looks/touches him she feels almost jealous? There’s also a time where she overhears Coal admit he thinks she and Taylor are together and she never corrects him on it, and even acts all shocked that he would suggest that when they talk later on in the story. It just didn’t really make sense to me.
Now Coal. I am girl of simple tastes really so it’s no wonder I loved him too.
As for the storyline, while a little slow moving at times, it has me intrigued and wanting to know more about what happened to cause the contamination, what’s going on with the corrupt leaders within the walls and what is happening with Maya’s parents.
I am excited to see where this goes so I will definitely be reading the next book when it comes out.

Another roller coaster of a story by the amazing Susanne and Caroline. They have an amazing talent to get the readers to relate with the storyline and characters and Rebel Rising is no exception. I found myself powering through page by page until I was begging for the next part, hoping it went the way I wanted, of course that would be asking for too much and I found me with slight whiplash at how many times I was thrown off course. An amazing story and I cant wait for more

I love this book.
First off I liked the scene when they discover an old house outside the Wall and have none idea how it's function and the arrangement of the house. It contrast so much with how we see it. Each times they uncover something and try to found out what it is we are just like " but that's.
..
Then Maya is very unlucky falling on her head and breaking the mask
I hope we see Lucretia again I think she is evil and maybe know more about population
I always hate the scene when characters need to run away (not in the sense I don't like this kind of event but more that they stress me so much I always feared the characters being attacked and always am like but run faster come on you can do it
I hope we se more of Taylor apart from him playing sleeping beauty

Oh my!!! Oh my, Oh My!!!!
Talk about fanfuckintastic!
This book was everything I wanted in a story, plus a thousand times more.
Take "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent", add in a hell of a lot more darkness, epicness and badass characters, then you have "Rebel Rising".
Susanne's world building and character building, along with her story-writing is phenomenal. She not only allows you to read words on a page, she transports you into that world and takes you on one hell of a ride along with the characters. You feel the heartpounding adrenaline they feel, and you hear the screeches of the creepers giving chase. It is a world, that no matter how dangerous it is, you want to be in.
This book needs to be made into a film or a TV series. That is how good it is...and it's is just the beginning.
I NEED more. I need to be lost in this world for longer. I NEED more sleepless nights.

ANOTHER EXCELLENT READ! Fast paced action, slow burn romance and thrilling adventures. Excellent character and plot development. I am excited for book two. Also this book offers a change to the heart stopping gut wrenching cliffhanger of other series but leaves enough unanswered questions that everyone (including me),will be begging for book 2!

To say this book is in my top 5 is an understatement because it is my absolute favorite book right now! I’ve already read it multiple times and I AM OBSSESSED! This book is, “Hunger Games”, meets “Divergent”, meets a little bit of “The Maze” and it did not disappoint at all! This book needs to become a TV series because everyone would love it! I was not disappointed at all with my ARC of this book! Absolutely AMAZING job Susanne! I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

Rebel Rising is the first book in the Cage of Lies series and tells the story of Maya, Coal and their friends.
When I started reading Rebel Rising, I immediately had some Divergent and The Hunger Games vibes and I loved it! Divergent and THG are two of my favourite Dystopian series and Rebel Rising is definitely one of my favourite Dystopian books! The story is just so interesting and it’s also different from what I’m used to from Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti!
We mainly read in Maya’s perspective, and I loved it! She’s such a badass character, and she has to deal with a lot of things since going to the Lawless Trials. We also got one chapter in Coal’s, Hunter’s, Alicia’s and Laurie’s perspective. I really liked getting to know the characters and their thoughts. Maya is definitely my favourite character and I cannot wait to get to know Coal better! I also have a feeling that I’m going to love Hunter in the other books.
It’s been a while since I read some Dystopian books and that’s mainly because Paranormal Romance and Fantasy are getting a lot of attention at the moment, but I do enjoy reading Dystopian books. It was so fun reading a Dystopian book again, and Rebel Rising was such an amazing and addictive read. I cannot wait for the next book in the Cage of Lies series!

Is it just me or did anyone get "I am Legend" feelings from this book..... mixed with Divergent?
Susanne, I have to say I was very grateful to read this book. I'm normally not a dystopian type of person. But I have to say, Maya really grew on me.
Maya literally starts off living in a bubble like society, to keep away mutant disease and infection.
Speaking from experience, (while dealing with this quarantine world that we are currently surviving) I very much empathize with her. Humans were not meant to be in bubbles. WE WERE NOT MEANT TO BE IN QUARANTINE.
anyways... I digress.
Maya has always had difficulty in the society/world she grew up in. Not to mention, how lonely she is. But at least she has a family. or makeshift family of her friend and his family. But these feelings of not belonging come into play later... no spoilers I promise.
Soooo on top of the fact that she doesn't fit it. The very society she lives in sends her to crazy war trials, that can kill her (and put her point blank next to murders, thugs, and worse...) all because of a simple mistake. Just saying... thats a brutal. Let the punishment fit the crime. This is what happens when too much power ends up at the top. Just craziness.
Because of this she ends up figuring out about the world on the outside, and how its changed and how her society has lied. And lets just say. She does not just give up or cry. No she fully goes all gung ho and embraces it.
Maybe it could be because she's got her childhood best friend with her who is super hot and protects her....
or because she meets Mr. Coal who is hotness in human form. At least in my imagination. But come on.... he shows out of no where. spouting
and helps her survive. I'd literally jump into his loving arms.
Anyways as she navigates the new world of zombies and deadly creatures. We see her strong loving character begin to form as a bad momma jamma.
So yeah. I'm definitely interested to see whats in store for her future, and what the story is with her hot men.

First instalment in the Cage of Lies series. This book was previously published under the title Chained. The whole series is currently being edited and getting some further content. I guess we should be expecting 4 more books if it is similar to the first version.
Just a note on this...the original books are not available on Amazon anymore. Yep...you got me! I confess I was going to cheat and download the 2nd one to see what happens next. I will have to wait patiently! So glad that Susanne releases books very quickly.
Back to the book, this is a slow-burn YA dystopian romance. Around 100 years ago, the world was badly contaminated and people could only survive if staying inside the cities’ walls. They cannot leave and, if doing so, consequences could be catastrophic. The society is highly controlled and there are many rules that need to be followed.
The most of the book is written from Maya’s POV, the main female character who was born inside of one of these walls but feels that there has to be more to life. We also get some chapters with other characters’ POVs, but the main voice is Maya’s.
It is quite stressing to read how brainwashed all of the citizens are and how easy it is to convince them that what the rulers do is for their own good. The plot starts with Maya and her childhood friend Taylor going for an expedition outside the wall to check the contamination levels and how a few seconds change their lives completely.
I really enjoyed the book as I was very invested in what was going to happen next and I wanted to get answers to some of the hints we had seen across the story. I was very intrigued about the society and the contamination consequences outside of the wall. There are lots of action packed scenes, some of them not for the faint-hearted. The Lawless Trials and the bunker were…
However, even if I really enjoyed the book, my final rating is 4 stars. I didn’t feel as connected to Maya as I would have liked as she was the main female character. The other ones were in the same age range as her but she felt more immature and naive. I would have preferred to read more times other POVs. My favourite characters were Alicia (smart, funny and badass) and Taylor (great friend, understanding and protective).
I think this book has set a good start to the series, more mysteries to resolve and more adventures to come. I am sure my love for the characters will grow further in the next ones as the story develops.
In conclusion, would I recommend it? YES! Am I looking forward to the next book? HELL YES!

Another great book from Susanne Valenti, this is a dystopian/apocalyptic romance with hints of hunger games and 1984. Plenty of secrets, mysteries and injustices.
I removed half a star as I found the beginning a bit of a drag (compared to the other books written by the author), however it picks up considerably a quarter of the way. I suspect the follow up books will be much more the usual pace it just required quite a bit of world building in this book to fully appreciate the heroines situation.
I enjoyed the interaction between Maya and Cole, it was believable in how they acted. Unsure of the other, clearly attracted to one another but scared to act on it. Plus Cole was under the impression most of the book she wasn't single.... And we love a respectful dude 🙏🏻😂
If you enjoy exceedingly creepy, sneaky, Gollumesque creatures with a penchant for rhyme.... This may just be the book for you haha

All the supporting characters are interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing them develop in future books aswell.
I liked Maya more in the second half of the book, she had some arrogant views to begin. I think Taylor has been a good balance for her as he seems a total sweetheart. And I'm sure now she's aware more of the world around her she can only grow into a better person.
Really looking forward to reading the next book as it's hinted at what they will be doing. Can't wait!

Another great book from Susanne Valenti, this is a dystopian/apocalyptic romance with hints of hunger games and 1984. Plenty of secrets, mysteries and injustices.
I removed half a star as I found the beginning a bit of a drag (compared to the other books written by the author), however it picks up considerably a quarter of the way. I suspect the follow up books will be much more the usual pace it just required quite a bit of world building in this book to fully appreciate the heroines situation.
I enjoyed the interaction between Maya and Cole, it was believable in how they acted. Unsure of the other, clearly attracted to one another but scared to act on it. Plus Cole was under the impression most of the book she wasn't single.... And we love a respectful dude 🙏🏻😂
If you enjoy exceedingly creepy, sneaky, Gollumesque creatures with a penchant for rhyme.... This may just be the book for you haha

This story was truly amazing. It is set in a dystopian future and I like the fact that this future didn’t happen from war but over population. The world became so crowded that it became a struggle to feed everyone. Scientists were put to the test to develop a way to grow bigger crops faster. The experiments didn’t turn out as planned and nature went out of control turning vegetation huge and cunning while people became deformed and turned into monsters. Massive walls are made to surround cities and save important people from society.
Fast forward 75 years and you have Maya and her best friend Taylor. They both live within one of the walled cities. The cities run in a very strict manner, everyone has a place and a role to play and your only taught the things about the position you are working towards. It’s all very secretive which starts to make Maya question her world. So when Maya and Taylor get the opportunity to head outside the wall to collect samples from the contamination zones, they jump at it.
It doesn’t go to plan and Maya and Taylor are sent to the Lawless Trials where they send criminals to fight to the death. This is where they meet Coal and his furry companion Kaloo who live beyond the wall in the contamination area. Everything they have been lead to believe is a lie and this is where the true adventure starts.
The world building in this is absolutely beautiful and has your imagination soring! The characters are well written and had me feeling all the emotions alongside Maya.
Really looking forward to the next instalment to the series.

I have read this brilliant piece if writing without any breaks!. Considering how the world is right now it was actually good to read something apocalyptic!. I fell in love with maya and coals relationship and im really looking forward to seeing it progress as the books go on. Alicia is just a badass, funny, and just generally a girl I would strive to be like. Laurie again is a badass female character who I enjoyed reading about from the start, she was different from the other wardens and could instantly tell she was a character I would easily fell in love with, fingers will be crossed for a little romance between her and Taylor or maybe even hunter, I found the wall layout description a little confusing and would love to maybe see a layout of the place (if possible). Rebel rising is a mind blowing book full of many twist and turns that kept me hanging on I wasnt disappointed in it at all and I very much look forward to reading more, I'll apologise in advance for this review I've had barely any sleep and needed to get it out there. Phew. Thank you for my arc copy I'll be also making sure I purchase too 😁 x

These characters and this world are just plain awesome......
I am a hardcore Susanne fan ever since discovering her Zodiac series with her sister Caroline and have slowly been trying to work my way through both of their books. When I saw that this series had been re-written and updated I just knew that if they were going to be even better than their already high ratings, then I should dive right in.
Let me tell you now, the worlds and characters that Susanne create are just incredible. The attention to detail in her writing means that you are able to fully immerse yourself into this dystopian world and picture everything vividly.
“You just looked so fierce and wild and yet so fragile at the same time." He was so close to me that it made my breath catch in my throat.
The characters themselves were just so good. Maya (my favourite name ever btw) was such a kind soul that just wanted to find her place in this world. She always knew something wasn’t quite right and knew she needed to do better but in a society that was built to suppress her, there’s no wonder she felt suffocated. She was feisty, fearless and utterly selfless.
Coal, ugh that man... If a Viking god made a baby with Queen Cleopatra and that baby had been blessed by Aphrodite then maybe they’d hold a candle to his hotness. He was the perfect mix of warrior, gentlemen and protector and I knew from the moment he was introduced that I’d love him!!!
The only reason this wasn’t a 5* read for me was because it did take a little while to get to the super duper exciting stuff. I do appreciate that as it’s part of a series, there is more time to spread the story out and provide more detail into the world so I can imagine book two will be even more exciting than this one!!!

So for some, this book might seem familiar and thats because its a revised version of Chained: Everything You Know Is a Lie (Cage of Lies book 1). I was lucky enough to read that whole series, before it was taken down, so when I saw Susanne had what I thought was a new dystopian series, I was super excited. Once I started reading it, I realized it was the same series as before, but redone. I love how she and her sister write books together, they write such immersive stories that you feel like your right there in the story and this book is no different. There comes a point, fairly early in the book, that you get to read a letter found by Maya in the grey area outside The Wall, that ties this series in with Susanne's Tainted series, and as soon as I read it, I got excited because even though I've read both series, it didnt dawn on me until this revised edition that they were related. Now Im even more excited to get to finish the whole revised series to see how much crossover between the two there is!

If I was to describe this book I would say think Hunger Games meets the Walking Dead.
The imagery of the world building is done so well I can picture it clearly in my mind.
I loved Maya our leading lady, she has a quiet strength about her and whilst she somehow manages to make everything into a dangerous or painful situation she also shows that steely core right when it is needed. I hope she learns to trust her instincts a bit more though.
Coal is just an all round good guy and I would defo want to have him on my side in a post-apocalypse world. I think there is going to be more played out with the Blane storyline.
Then we have our core of supporting characters; Laurie and Alicia, who are both Alpha females, then Taylor the pining best friend and Hunter the older mentor.

All in all a good read and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for book 2 releasing to see how thr story unfolds.

Wow!
I’m not usually a huge fan of dystopian novels, but I make an exception for this one. The simple fact being a testament to such marvellous authors.
The first book in the Cage of Lies series, and what a fantastic start it is too. This book follows two best friends, Maya and Taylor and their discoveries about everything they thought they knew. We meet Coal, along with several other awesome characters, and what a hot and mysterious character he is. There is no doubt him and Maya definitely have some heat between them. I can’t wait to see where that goes.
There are plenty of lies and deceits to be discovered, and I’ve absolutely no doubt there are plenty more to come. At some points there were definite goosebumps on my skin that only added to the obvious talent of this book.
Can’t wait to read more about Maya and Coal, and follow them on their enlightening journey.

I’ve been left reeling from the end of this book and absolutely desperate to dive deeper into this world and learn more! The descriptions and ideas were so intriguing, from the plants and animals to the Creepers - I can’t wait to read more!
A refreshing take on rebellion... I won’t go into detail with spoilers, but I’m looking forward to where the story leads.

Rebel Rising
I picked up this book because I really loves all the others I have read so far by Susanne Valenti & Caroline Peckham. Even though this is a dystopian as opposed to fantasy it is just as good.
I wish book 2 was already out!
Maya lives on floor 40 in the city. She had to move down after the death of her parents in a lab accident. She is still allowed to attend school with her best friend, Taylor. One day Taylor wakes her up with the news of an expedition outside the city wall to see if the city can expand. They are testing for signs of the contamination that led to the Guardians creating the city and its wall in the first place.
Such a good book & excellent world building that these two ladies should definitely be known for!

These ladies have done it again. Another amazing book I couldn't put down.
Rebel Rising is the first book in a new series, the best way to describe it is a mash up of Hunger Games and Divergent only (dare I say it...) better.
The story is set in a dystopian future after a lab made mutation intended to increase food production for the ever growing population, goes horribly wrong and ravishes the earth causing nature to fight back against humans and humans to turn in to dangerous feral human like creatures. In order to escape the chaos, what is left of civilization stay hidden in a concrete city, the only thing keeping them safe from the horrible mutation raging outside the walls.
When Maya is given the opportunity to go outside the walls to collect routine samples, she jumps at the chance, but after accident exposes her to the risk of mutation Maya's life changes forever and she soon realises everything she has been lead to believe is all just a lie.
This book is amazing and I don't use that word lightly. I was expecting it to be just another world is ending zombie type book but I was so wrong. The authors have managed to take something that has been done to death and give it a new spin. My only negative is that I don't want to wait for book 2. I need it now.

Amazing!!! 🤩

Rebel Rising is the first in the Cage of Lies series and wow it does not disappoint. This book showcases the serious talent of our author that creates a dangerous world you cannot help but want to see.
Maya the lead is a badass. She is strong and sets herself on a journey to find answers outside of the walls. However things are never what they seem and Maya is discovering more than she ever intended to. The story takes you for a ride and into a world that is devastatingly beautiful. The characters throughout the story grow increasing your need for them. Then the plot just keeps you on edge. Cannot wait to continue this journey.

Okay do this book starts slow, but trust me you're gonna be wanting more in the end!
It has a little divergent vibe to it but with a different story. In the beginning you get to meet the characters and get to know their thoughts and the bond they have and along the story you get to meet new people and just get sucked into it.

What a rollercoaster!
This book was amazing, from start to finish. There is so much action and suspense that at times I found myself literally sitting at the edge of my chair. There is a touch of romance too and it makes the book perfectly balanced.
The book is set in dystopian future and the world building is phenomenal. I got an ARC and wasn’t sure if I would like a book set in a world destroyed by a mysterious contagion, given the current state of our world. However, I could not stop reading and cannot wait for the next book.

Well, first of i must say that Dystopian novels are not my cup of tea. And it took me quite a while to get into reading this book and i must admit that for a few chapters(most in the beginning) i wasnt sure i was going to finish.
BUT, after Maya and Cole's paths crossed, things got very very interesting.
Some parts had me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails, with too many close calls for comfort, but these characters are total badasses and i will definitely be waiting anxiously for the next installment

I really enjoyed this book it had me holding my breath in suspense in some parts.
The story has lots of strong characters and I found myself rooting for Maya and Coal to have a relationship.
I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment.

These authors are pretty new to me but have read some of their other releases and have to say I’m not disappointed with any part of this book, the characters are strong without being rude or angry and the story line is really good and descriptive.
Can’t wait for the next one as I have ideas about what is going to happen but then again I had ideas at the start of this book and was turned on my head by the end.

Wow. Seriously, all I can say is wow! This book had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next. Maya and her friends are always finding themselves in some sort of debacle! It’s been awhile since I’ve found a dystopian series that really has me hooked, Susanne did a wonderful job and I can’t wait for the rest of the books!

Rebel Rising is another out of this park read from Caroline & Susanne. It’s set in a dystopian Earth and follows our heroine, Maya, as she tries to save her best friend’s life and discovers what life outside of her city is like. There’s a virus and “creepers”, there’s a government that’s lying to its citizens, there’s friendship and young love.. what more could you want? If you like dystopian novels, you’ll love this start to a new series.
