Lupine Hollow Academy #1

Flower Moon Rising

Rate this book
Bitchy drama queens, hot boys, strict teachers, social outcasts… the normal high school experience.

Or it would be, if my classmates weren’t werewolves.

Everyone attending Lupine Hollow Academy, one of the most prestigious private schools in Connecticut, is a werewolf. Everyone, that is, except for me. I’m human—pathetically, weakly, ordinarily human.

After my mother’s death, the Alpha of Lupine Hollow welcomes me into his pack in order to keep me safe. However, safety isn’t the first thing on the minds of the students—or teachers—who make up the pack. They’re far more worried about how I would taste or how I’d look smeared across a wall.

Despite the drama, the hazing, the ridiculously hard classes, and the pain, I have to make my mark here—I will make my mother proud, no matter the cost. If I manage not to become the next meal, that is.

With the Flower Moon Rising, I’ll be faced with challenges I never could have imagined as my fantasy world is brought to life. Will its glow be my demise, or a chance at a future more incredible than I ever could have dreamed?

***This novel is a full-length paranormal reverse harem/poly-amorous/mature high school romance novel. This book contains foul language and sexual scenarios.

I was unsure about this book at first. But I'm really glad I read it. Although it was a little YA all the characters were well developed and it was a great start for a ongoing series. The heroine was easy to connect to and I liked her. The plot was really interesting and although I suspected the cliffhanger I didn't think it would happen in book 1. Overall, I really liked this and I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in paranormal RH books or werewolf books in general. I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next installment because I'm very excited to see what happens next. 4.25 stars.

First of all, this is going to be a short review because I’m tired 🥱✌️. This was fun to read. I enjoyed it but I didn’t feel like there was much of a plot. I still enjoyed it though.

I liked Pixie. I think I don’t know her that well from this book, but I want to know more. The ending of this book left me intrigued and wanting to know more about her.

I loved Shannon, Ari, Chan, Zev and Fillian. I feel like they’re all good for Pixie in different ways. I can’t wait to see more of them on the next book!

3.5. This just feels like your typical academic werewolf book. There are a few things that set it apart, which I will not get into so I don’t spoil it for anyone. Will I finish the series? Yes, I will, unless it takes a turn for the worst.

Flower Moon Rising is a fairly generic shifter read that stayed YA and didn't deviate from the familiarity from the cliches of the genre.

The blurb is straight forward, it doesn't create any unmet expectations so I knew I was in for a simple read. I just wanted to read something with all shifters involved and I got it with this book. It's all about the wolves here even if they are not that scary. The problem lies in not actually having an end goal, the mean girl scene could be seen coming from the first confrontation. The book just floats on this general vague boat of assimilating with the wolves and the academy, that's it. If it wasn't for the short length it could have felt more dragged and unexciting.

The characters starting with Pixie are okay and the harem is lacking in depth. They don't have much details added to them to make it memorable. The only thing that stood out was the inclusion of Shannon, a chick into the harem. At first I thought she is supposed to be the BFF character but towards the end it's quite clear she is going to be part of the harem. I'm not sure how truly of a reverse harem it is when there is another chick involved but she is a lesbian so... I guess the equation would feel more clear in the next book. There isn't any insta relationships happening, there are interactions, some heated moments but nothing OTT.

I think it stayed a little too safe with the YA feeling of certain things but it's a cutesy read if you don't mind the lack of complexity and just want to read something with shifters.

I was on the fence about the score for this. When I first finished it, I would have given it three stars, but thinking about what to include was made me consider if that's right. But I'll have some faith on Past Me and give it three.
Character-wise, I think that's what's making me be on the fence. Pixie seems quite inconsistent. There are times that she seems to understand how much danger she's in and she's submissive, and other times where she's sarcastic and will clap back at any person who threatens her. I think I would have preferred some consistency. I don't mind her character, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to finish the book, but I think that my ideal character for this book would have been a tough woman who can fight okay for a human so she can partially handle herself. I think my biggest issue with Pixie was her snapping out of her grief for her Mum. A month after her death, she cuts and dyes her hair and she's okay. She goes from severely depressed to a bit sad in the space of a few pages. It's another moment where I would have preferred more consistency.
Plot-wise, it's interesting. I like the idea of the hierarchy and the school itself. So there were two main plot points: animosity to Pixie's presence at the school, and the romance between Pixie and her harem. For the animosity, it wasn't the most original of the popular RH magical academy books. I'd kind of expected the ending, not the specifics but the events. I was okay with the RH. I say okay because it kind of seemed like Pixie couldn't really have friends, anyone she was close to was made a member of her RH; so I think I'd have preferred her to have a social circle where she doesn't want to sleep with at least one of them.
But anyway, I was pretty entertained with this book. I'll be impatiently waiting for the second book, to see what the consequences are for the end and how they deal with it all.

Review for the whole series

My review has insight about the book. Please do not read it if you’re worried about any spoilers.

I read the authors Phoenix series and I thought it was wonderful. So I felt really confident about reading another series by this author.

I still read some of the reviews for book one before I bought it. From the reviews I read, they didn’t seem that bad. One of the things I read was how people were annoyed with one of the male characters having an issue with cursing. That did get annoying after a while. Another thing that got annoying was the FMC talking about her virginity. Once or twice is fine but she was doing it all the way into the second book. She could’ve found different ways to state something like I don’t have any experience or I haven’t been ready to experiment etc.

This is something that I wish I knew before I bought the first book. It’s kind of a big dealbreaker for me when I select books. The FMC is bisexual and she has a female love interest. It didn’t really become to light until the second book. If I knew about it, I probably wouldn’t have purchased the books. I personally have no problem with women loving women. But this is all about me having a fantasy like moment when I’m reading. And it’s just not my cup of tea. Having said that, there was only one scene that I really had to skim over because of that.

And I have to say that the third book was a throwaway. Certain things didn’t seem to fit and you questioned how it’s OK in one situation but it’s not allowed in another. The author try to justify it but it’s hard to justify everything away when you think about it logically. It just seemed very contrived and the villains are like laughable.

Wonderful

I had read the shorter version of this story when it was part of the Magic and Mayhem anthology and highly enjoyed it though wished it was longer. The longer version did not disappoint! I absolutely adore the characters. Pixie, the main female character is strong, sassy and compassionate. Those that are going to be in her harem are all diverse and bring their own flavor into the story. There is also a nice little twist that I was waiting for. Additionally, if there were typos and errors, I didn't notice. Overall this was a very enjoyable start to a series. I can't wait to see where the author takes this story! I definitely recommend this book.

Love a shifter book

How does a human survive in a shifter academy? with a hot broody future alpha, two cheeky beta twins, a cute female wolf and a sexy moody teacher. I love shifter books and this did not disspoint. It was great at setting up potential relationships and where the story could be heading in the next book. The ending was awesome. A slow burn romance, with only romance potential getting a kiss. I'm excited to see where this series goes.

Looking forward to the next one

--- SPOILERS ---
So, opening with the bad. I just don't get Lyle. He's supposed to be this great manipulator and liar but he's a very obvious, and one dimensional, bad guy. To me, this takes away from the parts of the story that feel more real when he's interjected into the story periodically. If he behaved more nice up front and then manipulated her or the situation to fit his needs would be better. Cast doubt, make the duplicity seep through, be caught in lies rather than make him a straight up grade a a**hole. The pain she's experiences could still happen in the story with that type of behavior. For example, when selling the house he could have told her he tried to negotiate, the buyers drove a hard bargain, nothing he could do, etc.; then when she goes to the pack for help, found out it's a lie boom. Anywho, moving on. I was unsure of how good this story was going to turn out because I wasn't a fan of the first few chapters (largely due to Lyle and some questions of her supposed good friends), but I'm glad I stuck it out. I loved the glimpse we get into the shifter world and felt about as confused as she did, which was not a bad thing. From what we've seen of the culture I wasn't sure how a relationship, let alone an RH, was going to make sense, but the cliffhanger ending opens up those possibilities for it to make work pretty well. I'm already iffy about a high school age RH, but I'm willing to give this one a chance and will read book 2 because of how well done the book was later in the story (except Lyle - that recurring disappointment)

I'll admit this was almost a dnf for me at about 50%. I think the reasons were because while the story progressed, nothing really changed it just cycled through again. It was also very predictable and while I enjoyed the ending, I was in no way surprised.

Update: yes, I'm still thinking about this book (is that a good thing?) I think I've pinpointed what I didn't like. The book was a downer from start to finish. I was joking about rainbows and unicorns and really there were none. Our MFC (can't remember her name) loses her mom, is paired with a nasty uncle, is forced to go to a school where no one wants her, is tormented while there and in the end is forced into something else. (And no, I don't think the "bad guys" will be punished) The characters didn't have a lot of personality, so comic relief was at a minimum. It was just a downer no matter which way you look at it.

** Can we now talk about the book cover? 🤢 What is this cover saying to people. To me it says "my six year old girl will love this because it's full of rainbows and unicorns ". (Boy would she be disappointed 😂) **

4.5 Full Of Spice And Fire Stars

Flower Moon Rising is the first book in the Lupine Hollow Academy series by Quinn Arthurs.

This book was entirely too good, it ended far too soon. I devoured it with gusto, practically hating when I reached the conclusion. I need more of this literary world in my life.

Pixie is an easy heroine to love. She’s empowered, kind, caring, full of strength, and hard-earned will. Her new friends bring such happiness. Alarik with his prominently growly and too serious nature, Chann and Zev with their cute twin tricks and mischievous personalities, and Shannon with her unerring kindness and comfort. Not to leave out Mr. Cole of course, or rather Fillian (dig that name!) with their burgeoning bond near the end of the book.

I wonder how her new state will affect her in the pact. I’m mainly excited about the cool hair color. She’s gonna be so outrageously beautiful.

Words Can't Express

Wow. This book spoke to my heart, and my heartbreak in ways that are difficult to express, especially without spoilers. I have an entire page highlighted to go back and reread when my grief comes flooding back. I can't thank you enough for the words I have needed to hear for almost 13 years. The conversation between Pixie and Mr. Cole on the tower made me cry, but also gave me hope. It also reminded me that it is okay to ask for help when I need it, and to lean on my friends when my grief becomes too much. Thank you for that.
The story is well written and keeps you interested. Can't wait to see what adventures await Pixie and her friends.

This was a really interesting take on werewolf romance. There's nothing innately unique about the werewolves over other werewolf books.

This is a bit of a slow burn reverse harem. I like all of the future harem members. The most heat is a kiss which was very nice.

I like Pixie/Penelope/Penny/Poppy WHATEVER you want to call her. She's real which isnt really a common occurrence in fiction.

I hate Lyle and I don't think we have seen the last of him and I expect any and all future interactions to be even WORSE.

I hope we get more information about her mom. I think there's more to that story.

Wonderfully surprised!

I am shocked how much I liked this book. I started it awhile back but once I got to the part about how sad she was over her mother passing and her guilt I stopped. The writing was spot on and felt incredibly natural to what the main character was going through. I’m glad I picked the book back up and gave it a real chance. It was well worth it! Basically the rest of the story opened up, the fmc really pulled through with the help of her new friends at her new school. Finding out everyone was werewolves was eye opening for her and she was learning something new about them in every chapter. I can’t wait to read the next one.

How can she be « strong » when she isn’t doing anything ?
I hated the immediate « you’re our friend and no one will mess with you (even if all the pack know you are the lowest of us and to not mess with you) »
I didn’t feel any romantic, deep connection between the characters.
I would have appreciated the tag MMFFMM somewhere.
Shannon is the cutest of all.
I don’t get were their (her whole group of friends + one teacher that is 20 !) feelings are getting to bloom toward romantic to the point of doing what happens in the final chapter (nothing sexual).
{Raff completely disappear from the book after dropping her off the first night, eating in the cafeteria and leaving without a word for anyone}
To make it short, a FC that barks more than does anything, hollow counterparts. It felt empty to me. I would have appreciated some mention of her mother besides the tragic part where the FC cries her heart out.
Did not like this book.

Sooooo.... I usually can see the foreshadowing and what is coming in the book. For some reason, probably because I was so into the moment when reading, I didn't see the end of this book coming! I loved how flirty the book was and the attitude of the main character. It's hysterical! I feel as though each character was developed so well it made it easy to remember who was who, what they were like, etc. I also enjoy that there is the possibility for this RH to not just be one female with all of her males... I guess we will see. :) Super awesome book. Devoured it in one day!

This series is gripping from the very first chapter! I experienced the whole rainbow of emotions in this book. You will find yourself cheering along with Pixie. Crying your eyes out with sorrow. Raging mad at the injustice. Quinn is one of the few authors who can affect my emotions so easily. This book is a slow burn reverse harem that will leave you panting for more!

Pixie, Fillian, Alarick, Chann, Zev, Shannon

My oh my, I did not see that ending coming. Pixie becoming a wolf is amazing. I love the fact that her fur apparently matches her hair color. I hope something is done about Rhianna and her cronies. They almost killed her and Luna. They deserve some major punishment. Guess I'll see what happens in the next book!

A slow burn shifter read

The setup of the characters was really good for more in this series. The female main character is easy to connect with. Very YA as there is no sex, just a lot of innuendos and a kiss. Of course, the men are not and the women are sassy. Enjoyed this book!

Fun and easy read, will read more from this author.

The series is very slow burn, with only a few bits of 🌶️ in the last book.
Very young adults with the weight of their world on them, but they make it work.
If you give it a try I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

A decent read

This wasn't really a reverse harem or poly, it was more like just friendship building. I was sort of expecting something different. It was definitely a cute story, if not somewhat predictable.

What a cute story, I really love the premise, and the characters. The world development is awesome and the story kept moving, never allowing a lull. Defiantly a must read.
