Wanton in Winter

Rate this book
A desperate earl...
Cameron Blythe, the Earl of Hertford, is about to lose nearly everything he owns to creditors in the wake of his blackguard father’s death. The only way to stave off ruin is to find a wealthy wife, even if it means aligning himself with one of the infamous Winter sisters. Any of the chits will do. Except for Miss Eugenia Winter, that is, whose reputation has been tainted by scurrilous gossip.

A defiant lady...
When Eugie spurned an odious, fortune-hunting suitor, the last thing she expected was for him to spread shocking lies about her. Determined to stop her beloved sisters from falling prey to a similar, painful fate, she will do anything to keep the penniless Earl of Hertford from making a match with one of them. Even if it means cornering him in a darkened winter’s garden and kissing him herself.

A passion they can't resist...
But when one kiss turns into another, and then another, the strictly proper Cam cannot help himself from falling for the Winter with the most wicked reputation of all. And Eugie? Much to her dismay, she’s discovering the irresistible earl may be everything she has ever wanted. Does she dare trust her heart, or will the painful lessons of her past prove too impossible to overcome?

I love this story

This was so wonderful and I love when Scarlet Scott writes real love stories like this with non cheating heroes and so utterly wonderful!! I laughed and I want to find me a Cam! What a great hero. There were times I got annoyed with Eugie the heroine but in the end this was an awesome book. Very hot and steamy. Some scenes made me swoon and I never do that. But I loved that The Prince of Proper was so very improper and so hot. I love this series so far. Thank you Scarlett Scott when you write heroes that are faithful and hkt!!!

Another beautifully written book in the Wicked Winters series. Our dashing Hero, 'The Prince of Proper', Cam and independent, sincere heroine Eugie are absolute fire together. A shorter book that is masterfully done, never once feeling rushed. Pure exquisite emotion and sensuality in a delicious and perfect package with an intriguing plot.

I 💗 this series!

Oh boy. where do I start? This book will leave you needing a cold shower, feeling happy & hating the fact the story ended - Scarlett does have a way with words!

The handsome Cameron "Cam" Blythe, Earl of Hertford - known around society's sobriquet as the Prince of Proper - has inherited a destitute earldom because of his father's debauchery before his death & now it is necessary he find a bride with a large dowry so he can rebuild his title.

Miss Eugenia "Eugie" Winter (the wickedest, wanton Winter) has a large dowry but because of false rumors, a man she had rebuffed had spread about her, her reputation is ruined & the Prince of Proper, Cam could never look at her for wife material.

Cam & Eugie meet for the first time at a ball when they both were forced to dance with the other. Cam had admired her from afar in her red gown & she had given the handsome earl a generous peek too but both of them knew they would not suit. Then they danced & the sizzle began.

A house party given by her brother, Dev & sister-in-law, Emilia inviting eligible, titled gentlemen for Dev's sisters to meet. Of course, Cam was one of the gentlemen invited. This couple went through all possible scenarios in finding happiness - it went from not only no but hell no to the point of catching my reader on fire.

Scarlett Scott has put together one of the best series I have read - I love the stories behind the wonderful Winter family. Although, this book can be read as a stand alone, I would suggest starting with the first one & learning about the family. As you probably can tell, I highly recommend this book & the whole series & there are still more sisters & stories to come!

I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

I found this story to be an entertaining read. I did like the characters of Cameron and Eugenia. Cam had been known always to do the right action in any situation but getting to know Eugie, had him behaving out of character. Unfortunately Eugie had been ruined by unfounded rumours about her character. She would not be suitable for his countess, even though he needed money for his estates. The sister’s banter was amusing and there were some very steamy moments. I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series.

This book is an ARC and I very happily give my review here.
Scarlett does it again. A delightful, hot, funny piece of life among the elite who have no money and the those who work for a living. Cameron, the Earl of Hertford is in serious trouble. His late father frittered away the family funds and now, Cam is left with no money and an urgent need to marry an heiress. A situation he is less than pleased with. He and his friend Rand, Viscount Aylesford, have been invited to a ball at the home of Devereaux Winter in the hopes that one or both of them will offer for one of Dev's five younger single sisters. Dev as he is known, is desperate to get his sisters married of to nobility in order to bring his family into the realm of high society. A working class family, his wealth is more than most of the nobles have. His father, a wealthy merchant, has left it to Cam to increase their wealth which he has done with hard work and smart choices. Stiil, money does not make them part of the ton. He wants the "respectability" that being part of that will bring his family. Sister Eugenia, young, spirited, had fallen for a man of disreputable nature and seeing what he was, she cancelled their betrothal, after which, he, Baron Cunningham spread vicious lies about Eugie, claiming that not only had he ruined her, but she was not a virgin when he had her. Not true by a longshot but gossip always seems to be more fun than the truth.

As Cam and Rand eye the sisters, each of them young and lovely, Rand to inherit a property his grandmother refuses to let him have until he becomes entrothed, and Cam, desperate to rebuild what his father had ruined. He had been a man of violence toward his wife and son and a wastrel to boot. Cam spots Eugie, sporting a beautiful red dress and is immediately taken with her, though he vows, she is not the one for him. Not a ruined woman! Eugie on the other hand, states she will never marry, she has a fortune and no need of another noble looking to marry for money. Especially hers. She trusts no man no and claims she never will.

Cam and Rand are both judgmental in their views of the five sisters but then, the sisters are also at fault for judging the young men. Cam is known as The Prince of Proper - and indeed he is. Never would he think to ruin a young woman - It would be beneath him and cast him in the same cesspit as his late father. He is however struck by a protective feeling when Rand decides perhaps he'll try for a fake engagement with Eugie, Anything to get his grandmother of his back. Cam, for reasons beyond him, cannot stand the thought of Rand, or anyone else for that matter, touching Eugie.

As time wears on, Cam and Eugie discover they may not love each other but they are most certainly in lust! After the first kiss between them, Cam can't keep his hands, or lips, of her and she simply can't resist him while proclaiming he does nothing for her. Right! As the story unfolds, they simply cannot do without each other whether they like it or not.

There were scenes that I'm sure had steam coming out of my ears - I laughed out loud, giggled, and wanted to weep for the foolish actions, the loving touches and the love shown in the entire Chase family along with that of Cam. A wonderful story that shows how foolish it is to declare on will never love again, or want, or need same. Enjoy!

4.5 Stars for the steamy 3rd instalment of the 'Wicked Winters'

The Plot
What happens when a fortune-hunting Earl meets a scorned Winter sister who is also unfortunately steeped in scandal? Sparks fly! Eugenie has been scorned by a former fortune-hunting suitor who spread vicious gossip about her, which the polite society was very quick to believe. Camron needs money and fast, what better way than to nab one of the Winter sisters as his bride? But not Eugie, never someone so scandalous! The only problem they have is that they cannot seem to keep their eyes, hands and lips to themselves in this Winter house party!

Not a fan of
Insta-lust to love to HEA, there is no other way to put it because if you do think too much about it it will start sounding a smidge far fetched.

What I liked
It was so much fun to read. I had a bemused expression on my face every time Cam & Eugie crossed paths, I was like, here we go again!

Insta-lust plots can get repetitive very quickly and run the risk of becoming skim-worthy, oh but not this one, the writing is witty and well-paced, which manages to hold the reader's attention till the last page. The characters are engaging and the sexual tension is electric.

The Hero
Cam is paying for his father's sins, literally, hence the need for a wealthy wife. Dubbed the 'Prince of Proper' true to his sobriquet he runs away from anything remotely scandalous. Thus his attraction to Eugie and the resulting inner battle felt true to form albeit out of character, an interesting paradoxical situation. I ardently admired his honesty towards his circumstances, towards his feelings and even to everyone else. I love an honourable hero who can be super sweet, like wanting to create a rose garden for his beloved and then be deliciously improper in the bed-chamber!

The Heroine
Eugie was 'Basic' I guess, for the lack of a better word. She did not want to marry into the aristocracy, I get that. But her plan to save her sisters from a similar fate, however admirable was juvenile at best that is if I am being polite. She wanted to kiss every single eligible Lord in attendance of the house party and then see if they still pursue her sisters, if they do they are unworthy! What? My dear, way to prove to the ton that there might be stock in the gossip after all. She may have kissed Cam to test her theory but her attraction felt believable. Her resistance and scepticism on accepting his feelings were however stretched a bit too far. And for what? A cottage with a rose garden in some idyllic whatever-shire? Have better dreams, like Prudence who wanted to run a foundling hospital!

Apologies about the rant but TSTL heroines really mess with me! But if I chalk her out to be naive, this book becomes a good read!

My Recommendation
Loved the novella, Cam stole the show so much that for me, Eugie being basic only amounted to 0.5 stars! I will be reading the entire series and I am looking forward to exploring more from Scarlett Scott!

4.5 stars rounded up.

Left with a mound of gambling debts and crumbling estates since the death of his wastrel father, Cameron Blythe, the Earl of Hertford, is desperately trying to escape ruination, which means he needs a wealthy wife. An immensely wealthy wife and the infamous Winter sisters seem to be the only options with sufficient fortunes. Any of the sisters will do for the exceedingly proper earl, except Miss Eugenia Winter, whose reputation has been thoroughly dragged through the mud.

Since the man she thought she loved, (and who she thought loved her), turned out to be an unscrupulous fortune-hunter and spread hateful lies to ruin her reputation, Eugenia Winter is determined to make sure none of her beloved sisters suffer the same misfortune. She's willing to do anything to keep the obviously penniless Earl of Hertford away from her sisters, even if she has to occupy him with her own kisses during her brother's country house party.

But things don't end with just one kiss and Cam soon finds himself developing real feelings for Eugie, the last woman he believes he should marry. For her part Eugie finds that despite all the reasons he is a fortune-hunting cad, Cam may be the perfect man for her, but overcoming her painful past and putting her trust in him may prove impossible.

I really did not care much for Cam at first with his judgmental tendencies and holier-than-thou attitude but he later acquitted himself well with a good apology and the passion between him and Eugie was so vibrant that I could forgive him. Eugie's constant insistence on asserting that Cam only wanted her dowry got a bit tiresome, but was wholly understandable given her past experiences. Cam started out as pompous and arrogant but wound up doing some of the best groveling I've ever read. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I wish authors would remember that reader must like the Heroine of the story. Eugenia Winters was lied about by a lowly Baron whom she believed she was in love with. So when she meets Cameron the Earl of Hartford who has fallen in love with her, taken her virginity at her families house party, she whines repeatedly about he just wants her dairy. Well Dummy why did you welling give your virginity to him!! This story was total foolishness!! I felt like slapping Eugenia, Poor little Rich Girl!! Oh My!!

Of the Winter sisters, why did he have to lust over the one with the most scandal-tainted reputation?
A man on a mission to quickly wed a heiress to save his estates, Cameron, the Earl of Hertford, ended up dancing with Eugenia Winter, one of the five sisters who was the one with the taint and most unsuitable. You see Cam was known as the "Proper of Proper." He could not help but feel he was going to sell himself to obtain the funds needed.
Eugie could not deny how utterly handsome the Earl of Hertford was but she could see his stern look when he took her hand. She knew he had heard the rumors about her as had everyone of respectibility.
But she was determined to discover which men at the house party were worthy of her sisters and which were not. She had nothing to lose!
So she kissed the Earl when they ended up alone. Sigh....
Scarlett Scott has woven another swoon worthy story that is beyond compare. This series just keeps getting better and better if that is possible. I fell in love with these two wounded souls and could only hope to see their attraction evolve as I turned the pages. I seriously cannot wait for further stories in this series and hope Rand, Viscount Aylesford is up soon!!

Eugie has been unfairly labeled as wanton and ruined by her jilted fiance. Cam is in need of a sizable dowry to restore his family's coffers, but since he is the Prince of Proper, he needs a lady with a good reputation. These two are both polar opposites, but they cannot deny their attraction. After one dance, Cam realizes that there is more to Eugie than just a beautiful figure and a bad reputation. She is rich and "ruined", but she is the woman for him. It's not that easy for these two to just come together. Cam soon learns that there is much more to the rumors about Eugie and that he should not have been so readily believed them. Now that Cam is labeled as a fortune hunter he has to prove that he cares more for Eugie than her money. Can Eugie's reputation be repaired? Can these two overcome many obstacles to have their HEA?

I love Scarlett Scott's historical romances. Her books are always well-researched, steamy, enthralling, and satisfying!

Delightful❤️❤️❤️

I don’t usually enjoy regency romances as I find them horribly boring and dull, and usually devoid of passion, but I tried this one because the blurb was so enticing. And I’m so glad I did! It was exhilarating, funny, and STEAMY!!

I loved both characters, Eugènia and Cam were perfect opposites, drawing the best out of one another, and their sizzling attraction melted my kindle!

I will definitely be checking out more of this authors books.

Oh my, I devoured Wanton in Winter, the third book in the Wicket Winters series. Poor Eugenia, is unfairly treated by society after a lying, fortune hunter smeared her reputation after she rejected the filthy scoundrel.

I was really miffed at Cameron for judging Eugene so harshly at first, because of the unfounded rumors and because she was a tradesman’s daughter. There were moments I was hoping Eugie and her brother Dev would kick Cam’s snobbish, broke ass to the curb.

But Eugie held her head high and when Cam messed up, he had to do some serious groveling to win this Winter sister. And did he ever lay some sweet comeuppance upon Eugie’s former betrothed.

Their story was quite steamy but tastefully fine and with a lovely epilogue and believable HEA. I’m so happy that this series has been such a wonderful at the end of this horrible year. I’m on to the next book in this delightful series!

Wanton in Winter is the third book in the new Wicked Winters series. It is based on the Winter’s family and this one is Eugenia “Eugie” story. Dev Winter’s was trying to find wealthy, titled gentlemen for his sisters to wed. Emilia, Dev’s wife, hosted a Christmas house party and invited several gentlemen. Eugie’s reputation had been ruined and she was trying to spare her sister’s the heartache like she had suffered from a previous suitor. She came up with a plan to weed out the fortune hunters who were only interested in the women’s dowries. The Earl of Hertford, Cam, needed money fast due to his father’s bad management of money. He was on the verge of having to sell some of his property but marrying one of the Winter sisters would save them. He was drawn to Eugie, but he had always been above reproach and her reputations was ruined. He tried to avoid her, but once he heard her plan to save her sisters, it was impossible to deny his feelings.
This was another wonderful addition to the series. Eugie was honest, witty, and strong enough to hold her head up even with all the gossip. Cam was the perfect match for her. I can’t wait to read the next book and see what mischief the other sisters are involved in.

A Sizzling Attraction!!

Oh my, I loved Eugie and Cam’s story. Cam is the “Prince of Proper” who needs a wealthy bride that is free of scandal. Eugie is the undeservedly tarnished Winter sister who will not be swindled by another fortune hunter. They should not like each other. They are totally the opposite of what each one wants. But, ohhhh they end up loving each other. They have a chemistry that burns 🔥 and even though they try and fight it they cannot keep from doing inappropriate things with each other.

I am so glad they got their happily ever after and we got some hot and steamy love scenes! Wanton in Winter is one of my favorites of the series, really I think I have loved all of the books so far! I can’t wait to see what happens with Aylesford in book 4. I think he’s in for the ride of his life with Grace. I received an ARC of this book and chose to post a review.

Can the Prince of Proper tame the Wanton Winter or is it the other way around? This story was definitely nerve-wrecking in what would happen and how would everyone would feel about it. How can you really tell if a man wants your money or you? This is a wild ride with Cam and Eugie. There is sexual tension to burn the pages up right in front of you. This story ranks up there with the best of Scarlett Scott (and that is a tall order because they are all deliciously wicked and wonderful).

I'm loving this whole series, but Wanton in Winter one may be my favorite so far!! Cam and Eugie are so wrong for each other that it was so right!! He is the Prince of Proper in need of a wealthy bride above reproach and she is the Winter sister with tarnished (unfairly) reputation that is cynical of all gentleman's intentions. When these two meet at the opening ball thrown by the Winter Family, sparks fly in more than one way!! This was a quick read with just enough SPICE to keep you warm on a winter's night!!!

The books in the Wicked Winters series keep getting better! I love that these are short, easy reads, as that's exactly what I need lately. I can devour one of these in a day and get my fix of steam and romance with an engaging story.
This story follows Eugie Winter, who is known as the 'most scandalous' of her family. She's been ruined in the court of public opinion due to nasty rumors that aren't true. She comes face to face with the hero, Cam, during a ball at a house party. He's an earl with an impoverished estate who needs an heiress to set things right. But, he's known as the 'Prince of Proper' and would never take a scandalous woman like Eugie as his wife. Never, ever!
Okay, so yes, he comes across as a bit of a self-righteous prick at first. But watching a hero like that fall so hard for the heroine (and he doesn't even see it coming), is the best part about this book.
I came to adore Cam and identified very strongly with Eugie, who accepted him in the end but never stopped reminding him that as an heiress and an independent woman, she didn't NEED him to save her. Sweet ending and a nice setup for book 4, Grace's story!

It's a shame these are novellas, because even though I am enjoying Scarlett's writing and steam. However, there is always something lacking because of the size of a novella and how much needs to be fit into it.

I did, nonetheless, enjoy Eugie and Cam's story.
I enjoyed the twist on the "fortune hunter" and the "Prince of Proper", so much that I would have enjoyed more of it.
I like that these are commoners heroines, that do not care for titles.

I will continue to enjoy the Winters

I can not say enough about this wonderful book. I laughed, cried, and felt warm inside. Ms. Scott truly has a way with words. Every book I have read from Ms. Scott is wonderful and never disappoint.

This is a story is about Eugenia Winter, as known as Eugie, and the Earl of Hertford, Cameron Blythe, known as Cam. Eugie has a reputation of being fast and lose; even believed she lost her virginity. None of which is true. Cam has a reputation for being all that is proper, he even has the nickname Prince of Proper. What could go wrong or in this case right?

Eugie was burned by a previous suitor. She thought she liked a “gentleman” and he loved her, but found out that he was a fortune hunter. Eugie broke off the unofficial betrothal and the gentleman spread malicious gossip about Eugie. With her previous encounter she has become jaded about men, especially men looking for money.

Cam inherited a debt ridden estate when his father passed away. His father was a no good rotter of a man. Cam’s father was abusive and a gambler. Cam did not want to be like his father and tried to do everything opposite of his father. Of course, that sort of went to hell in a hand basket once he meet Eugie.

Cam knew he needed to marry for money to save his estate and to make sure his mother lived a life she deserved. Cam went to the Winter family’s house party. Cam knew he was going to try to marry one of the Winter sisters, but knew he did not want to marry the one with a reputation, Eugie.

When Cam walked in the door to the Welcoming Ball it was all over. Even though he did not want Eugie he gravitated to her and her red dress. From there folks it went quickly downhill (or maybe uphill).

The forever proper Cam could just not help himself when it came to Eugie even though she was not proper enough for him. For Eugie she could not help herself even though she knew Cam was a fortune hunter and all he could bring her was pain and suffering. The dynamics of the two was just like fireworks. They could not leave each other alone even though both of them felt the other was not good enough for the reasons as stated above.

I loved how the story progressed. The story was not forced, it just flowed. There are little hints throughout about the next Winter sister’s “downfall.” I would highly recommend this book. Even though this book can be read by itself, starting from the first book gives a nice foundation to the Winter family.

I received a copy of this book for my honest opinion. The above is a true and honest opinion of this fantastic book.

Another AMAZING story by Scarlett Scott!

I am convinced that it is impossible for Scarlett Scott to write anything other than amazing books. I LOVE this series, and Wanton in Winter did not disappoint! Cam & Eugie are *sigh* perfect for each other; and the chemistry is SCORCHING between these two.

Cameron Blythe, the Earl of Hertford, is known as the “Prince of Proper”. He has strived to live an honorable life, free of scandal. Cam views the Winter sisters as title hunters, looking down upon them due to the *gasp* “stench of trade” surrounding them. But, they are heiresses. Due to an inherited financial mess, Cam needs an heiress...just not Eugenia Winter with her scandalous reputation.

According to gossip, Eugie is ruined & not a suitable potential wife for Cam. He wants to avoid her, but finds her irresistible. Following one kiss, and much to his dismay, Cam cannot stop thinking about Eugie. She is not immune either, but continues to deny it.

Cam eventually admits his desire for Eugie, but isn’t sure that he necessarily needs HER. As they spend more time together, Cam realizes how wrong he was. He begins to fall in love with Eugie, but is he too late? Can Eugie ever trust him & his intentions?

Scarlett Scott continues to be one of my top 5 historical romance authors. I so enjoy her novels & her novellas. When reading her novellas, such as the ones in this series, I don’t feel as if they’re novellas. Ms Scott has THE BEST novellas, because they don’t feel like the typical “rushed” novellas.

Whether novel or novella, she has the amazing ability to make you feel like you’re right there in the scenes, witnessing the stories unfold; laughing, smiling, hurting, & crying with the characters...and feeling as if you know them personally. It’s bittersweet when her stories come to an end. I love seeing the characters get their HEAs, but I hate the loss of the story ending!

Read this book. Read ANY of her books. You will not be disappointed!

I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Starring, Cameron Blythe, Earl of Hertford and Eugenia Winters.

Omigosh, I am so in love with this couple. They were always kissing!! <- not complaining!! I swear, all of Scarlett Scott’s books should come with a water bottle fan so we can mist ourselves after each steamy scene. Cam is the Prince of Proper. Being scandal free was always more important to him than finding a wealthy wife to restore his family’s fortune. Eugie is twice shy when it comes to love. Her former fiancée only wanted her for her fortune and set about destroying her reputation when she broke ties with him. In Cam’s and Eugie’s checklist in life, they would not have been each other’s choice. But love has a way of ignoring what you thought you wanted, and instead giving you exactly what you need... and these two needed each other, badly.

“From the beginning, I have wanted you in a way that consternates and perplexes me. You are beautiful, and you are wealthy, but you are all wrong for me.” ~Cam

Gaaah!! All the feels, y’all. And yes, by the time these two found their HEA I was freaken bawling!! Such happy tears!! Scarlett Scott is one of my favorite authors of 2019. I am absolutely loving the Winter Series and can not wait for the other books to come out. She is firmly on my keeper shelf.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily reviewed it and the comments are my own.

My star system...
5 stars: Ugly cried AF... major book hangover... characters were amazing... made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will be re-reading this story over and over and over again!!

Dev Winter had arranged a house party for the express purpose of finding titled husbands for his sisters. Eugie Winter, whose reputation is in tatters because of a lying aristocrat, would make sure her sisters would not be taken in by fortune hunters. Cameron Blythe, the Earl of Hertford - the Prince of Proper - is just that: a fortune hunter. But as much as he needs money, a ruined miss will never do. If only he had eyes for anybody else but Eugie...

Cam and Eugie are charming and honest people; I liked them a lot individually and together. I was aware that WANTON IN WINTER would be steamy, and while the sexy times did not bother me - the numerous intimate scenes are beautifully and tastefully done - but I felt that as a consequence, the romance suffered a little bit. Their relationship seems built mostly on lust and physical attraction; we know them through conversations they have with respectively his best friend and her sister and sister-in-law, but we don't see them talking much to each other about things that matter. I did actually find rather amusing that Eugie really is wanton when given the chance. But they were really cute together, even all overcome with lust.

The writing is gorgeous; flowing, airy, and witty; the bright and lively descriptions bring forth a crisp picture of the English countryside and the mansion is filled with intriguing characters. WANTON IN WINTER is a very enjoyable Regency romp devoid of the angst I had feared initially because of the set-up; problematic matters are settled intelligently and without any unpleasantness. Now, about Grace and a certain devilish rake...
