I grew up in a house filled with books and readers. Some of my fondest memories are of reading in the same room with my mother and sisters, arguing about whose turn it was to make tea. No one wanted to put their book down!
I was introduced to romance because of my mom’s habit of leaving books all over the house. One day I picked one up. I still remember the cover. It was a Harlequin by Janet Daily. Little did I know at the time that it would set the stage for my future. I went on to discover mystery novels. Agatha Christie was my favorite. And then suspense with Wilber Smith and Ian Fleming.
I loved the thought of combining my favorite genres, and during high school, I attempted to write my first romantic suspense novel. I wrote the first four chapters and then exams happened and that was the end of that. I desperately hope that book died a quiet death somewhere in a computer recycling facility.
A few years later, (okay, quite a few) after two degrees, a husband and two kids, I attended a workshop in Tuscany that lit that spark for writing again. I have been pounding the keyboard ever since here in New Jersey, where I live with my children—who are thrilled with my writing as it means they get to eat more pizza—and my very supportive husband.

I have a soft spot for romantic suspense novels. They're my beach reads or something fun to fill in between books. This was a super quick read and the writing was strong. I bought it because I saw a Bookbub ad and it was .99 - can't beat the price and I was hooked enough to pick up book 1.

This book is rather tame considering the subject matter. Heroine, Lucy (Hazel), comes from a family of global arms dealers and hero, Logan, has a family security business. Lucy looks up to her dead mother and obeys everything her father tells her to do. Logan is the black sheep of his siblings and is ex Navy JAG Corps. Both are currently lawyers who really don’t want to be. Both are kidnapped by the bad guys and one in particular named Scar means business. The majority of the book is them running from the bad guys and bonding with each other. I’ll briefly summarize the things I did not like about this book:

1.) Lucy makes a major mistake in the beginning of the book by going to a random yacht party. “In reality, she had been invited by a woman she met by the pool at her hotel.” Uhh, what?

2. ) The sexual attraction is constant for better or for worse and sometimes it reaches the point where it simply defies logic. I kid you not that while held hostage, Lacy goes from uncontrollable laughter to level 10 horniness.

3.) Obsessive smelling is an ongoing thing with these two. As a result of previously mentioned sexual attraction, I kept doing a double take every time I read something that described them smelling each other. “She could still smell his maleness.”

I can definitely see something like this as a made for tv movie. Especially with both characters wanting to live their truth and get out of doing law. I mentally checked out and found it rather boring. I think this book is a good pick for anyone who likes exotic locations and crime to set the tone for a simmering romance between two stubborn people.

“Smash and Grab” is the second book in Lori Matthew’s Callahan Security series.  The series debuted with “Break and Enter” and promises at least one more, coming August 2020 titled “Hit and Run.”
In book two, we are introduced to brother number two of the Callahan Security Crew, Logan.  Logan is tasked with following Lacy to the Bahamas, where he quickly learns that Lacy has more than one secret up her sleeve. The steamy romance between these two lead characters makes for a pleasurable break in the non-stop action within.  Readers will not want to miss the irresistible individuals Matthews delivers as she drags you through beach front properties, jungles, and yacht parties. The conflict both within and between the characters is electrifying.
Author, Lori Matthews, cites her love for romance and suspense in her journey to becoming an author, as well as her desire to mash these two genres together as she began her writing career.  “Smash and Grab” is a perfect example of her success in creating an enticing blend of these fields.  As Matthews returns in this second book of the Callahan Security series she continues to deliver on her iconic scenery, dramatic flair for suspense and stifling romance.
“Smash and Grab” is strong enough to hold its own as a standalone novel.  However, as a lover of this series it is worth reading book one, “Break and Enter” to fully invest oneself in this killer series.  There are some weak story ties between this second book and the series debut that are worth understanding further as readers will easily fall in lust with the Callahan brothers and their, at times awkward, romantic conquests with the “heroines/damsels in distress” within.
This book is especially perfect for romance lovers, thrill seekers, suspense fanatics and anyone looking to escape to a tropical island.  Like “Break and Enter,” “Smash and Grab” immediately captures readers’ attention with its lush party scene, quickly breaking off as we tour the islands of the Bahamas through a series of heart pounding escapes.  The Callahan Security Series has quickly become a go-to favorite as it delivers on all-encompassing plot lines, stunning characters and action sequences that would make Vin Diesel blush.

Full of action

## This book was hard to put down, hence the 4 stars. The action was non stop which kept me turning the pages late into the night. However, this hero left a lot to be desired. I found him unlikable, and frankly a little wimpy. His tantrum during the conflict was ridiculous since HE was the one betraying the heroine. The heroine ended up having to beg his forgiveness when in fact the hero should've been the one doing the groveling. And the abrupt ending was a disappointment as well. These 4 stars are based solely on the action.

I want to love them

The stories could actually be really good. There’s just a bit too much back and forth about the couple for me. We get it, they’re hot for each other and trying to fight it. It kind me of drags on and detracts from a good mystery/suspense with a hot couple that wind up together!

Predictable

Mediocre storyline. Continuation of Break and Enter. Lackluster romance. Before I check I bet the third book is of Gage and the programmer.

It took me way too long to finish reading this book, the second half seemed to drag on forever. Considering this book is only 230-250 pages long that's saying something for me.

I find Lori's writing is entertaining, and I love reading about the absolute stupidity these couples get up to but there were many qualms that I had all the same. If you're reading these for some mind-numbing romance than feel free to ignore me! The series is fun so far, with some action and non-stop levels of horniess so get prepared

My first issues stems from the kind of "female empowerment" Lori is trying to write. So far both female leads have been the 'i don't need anybody's help' type of gal which is FINE but Lori is more of a fan of saying it then writing it. She is constantly having the girls put in situations that I personally feel they would be smart enough to get out of given their backgrounds and then the man swoops in to save the day. It's alright for female characters to need help, and for hard characters to learn to trust others, but it was poorly executed.

and the BIGGEST ISSUE I HAVE - Lori please don't ever write diabetes into your book again if you're not going to properly research it. Spoilers I suppose but the diabetic character is not specified as Type one or Type two, these are VERY different and impact your life in different ways. The declining health of the diabetic character is always spoken about as if they're on the brink of death, but multiple times the diabetes was mentioned as "not a death sentence" THEN WHY ARE YOU TREATING IT AS SUCH? They want this character to retire to focus on getting his health better but here's where I'm confused: said character is rich as hell and has access to some amazing doctors, there is no reason he can't work on his health and still keep his job. They also just throw in a statement a couple of times that they thought her this character was faking how seriously sick he was? Because he just told her "i don't feel too well". Lori, girl, what kind of sick? Do you know how diabetics bodies react when their diabetes is out of control? Surely not. You'd know a lot of the time it can end up with some serious health complications. It just felt like she tossed diabetes in there and for most people it wouldn't matter BUT IT MATTERED TO ME.

Anyways ... I'm still going to be reading Lori's work, cause I support my girl getting her bag despite this sounding like a bad review it's not I just cannot let myself chill out for once in my life and read a book without thinking too hard about it.

Lori Matthews, ‘Smash and Grab’.
A Callahan Security Novel.

As a Hidden Gems ARC reader I received a free copy and promised an honest review. Here it is.

Rating stars: 4 (of 5).

In general: A lot of romantic suspense.

Main characters:
- Lacy Carmichael or Hazel Fontaine (28).
Daughter of a large arms dealer. Very good looking lawyer. She’s used to dangerous situations for her dad has a risky profession. As a lawyer and loyal daughter she sometimes assists him, but secretly she hates her father’s business.

- Logan Callahan (32).
First an excellent lawyer; later CEO of Callahan Securities, the company he owns, together with his two brothers, Gage and Mitch. An important client is Drake, who hired his security firm in a case of industrial espionage. It appears that Lacy’s dad could be involved. When his daughter Lacy travels to the Bahama’s his brothers ask him to keep an eye on her while he - after all his hard work for their company - can relax in a luxurious resort on the island.

Lacy and Logan met for the first time during their lawyer careers. And - especially - Lacy felt a physical attraction. Later they meet during a party on the Bahamas and the physical attraction is mutual. But there’s hardly time to let this attraction grow into something more, for both are kidnapped by an enemy of Lacy’s dad.
Then the author, Lori Matthews, describes in a plot that has many twists and turns but was - for me - sometimes a bit incredible, in which way Lacy and Logan escape and how they at last fall in love. But it’s complicated: Lacy (or her dad) could be involved in the corporation espionage of Logan’s client Drake, the CIA is interested, Lacy’s dad has to deal with unreliable staff members and for Logan it isn’t easy to protect the stubborn Lacy against her will.
So many action scenes, sassy dialogues and that all in an exotic environment. In short: a pleasure to read.

The second book in this series is as breathtaking as the first! I loved this book.

Threats, imprisonment, car chases, kidnapping, shoot outs, murder, with parental love, romance, and some very steamy scenes, then on to suspense and international intrigue. Yes, I really loved this book! Fast paced and difficult to put down, I read this in one afternoon.

Continuing the saga of Callahan Security, this is Lacy and Logan’s story. Lacy was introduced to Logan in the first book of the series, since she is Alex’s best friend. The story line of the first book is briefly discussed, and it is the reason Logan has gone to the Bahamas. He needs to know what Lacy knows about the technology that Callahan Security is guarding. Her secrets are buried much more deeply and might get them killed. Is it because of the new technology or who Lacy truly is?

Lacy and Logan are both attorneys and have done battle in court, but they both have secrets they don’t want to share. There is an attraction between them, but neither of them are willing to act on it…yet. Now that they’re in the Bahamas and on the run together, sparks and bullets fly. The lines between right and wrong seem to be blurred as the story unfolds. If you like romantic suspense, this book is for you!

Ms. Matthews is a new author, and her first book, Break and Enter, was also fabulous. You don’t absolutely have to read Break and Enter before Smash and Grab, but they’re both fabulous and I think you’d understand the dynamics of the relationships better if you do read them in order. I can’t wait for the next book in this series and look forward to following Ms. Matthews career.

Finally finished Smash and Grab by Lori Mathews and it had me on the edge of my seat this whole time. I unfortunately read the books to the Callahan Security Series out of order but I was pleased that this book was just as thrilling as the last/next book. I very much enjoyed everything in this book and I’m glad to have read another book to this series.

Smash and Grab follows the dangerous misadventure that Lacy and Logan are set on while in the Bahamas. Logan has followed Lacy to the Bahamas as part of his job for Callahan Security, of which he is the CEO of. He gets swept up in Lacy’s unfortunate past and it takes them working together and using every big at their disposal to get to the bottom of everything. Throughout this whole ordeal, they can’t help the passion and comfort that comes from being in such life and death situations. In the end can they leave their fears behind and really pursue what they want?

This book had the perfect combination of action, adventure, steamy passion, and heartbreak. I enjoyed this so much. Lacy is a spitfire! She exudes so much confidence and strength that whenever emotions show through the cracks it’s just so raw. Logan sounds like a beast! For being a lawyer and CEO he really held his own. I enjoyed seeing him really doubt himself but find him rising to the occasion, especially to protect Lacy when he knew full well she was very capable in every way. The only thing I dislike Was not getting some kind of sneak peak into their future lives. Everything else about this book was awesome! A great read and an easy recommendation!

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

Take some time and go to the Bahamas, take a mini vacation, but also tail Lacy Carmichael to see if she’s involved in the corporate espionage, sure. It isn’t as easy as Logan Callahan’s brother, Gage made it out to be. He’s not into the whole tough guy thing like Gage and Mitch are. He’s a businessman. It would be better if he weren’t attracted to the beautiful lawyer, but he is, so it complicates the situation. Along with her secrets and her hidden identity, Logan Callahan and Lacy Carmichael are in for quite the weekend.

I really enjoyed this story. Its action packed, suspenseful, intriguing and off the charts steam between these two. The secrets that come out and the twists and turns of the story made the pages burn and tugged me in for the ride. The characters are interesting and fun to read and they have their own style which draws out the person deep inside when they work together. Lacy can see a different side of Logan when his need to protect her and keep her safe shines through. I loved the story and the characters and want to read more of the Callahan’s. I did not read the first book in the series, but it did not hinder my reading of this story at all. I do want to go back and read Break and Enter for a better understanding of the first meeting between Lacy and Logan though. I give this story a 5-star review and look forward to more books by Lori Matthews in this series.

4.5*+ ARC Review – Looking for Trust in an Uncertain World
I was introduced this author and series through Hidden Gems ARC program. This story continues where the first one left off and since I read both, I had plenty of background on the characters. In fact, there was an intro to this book at the end of the last one, so I was anxious to read this one. The book starts with a bang and keeps going with plenty of action, suspense and intrigue.
When the book opens, we see Lacy, an attorney from New York, who is the Bahamas to see her father and while at a party on a yacht, she runs into Logan Callahan. She has recently been reintroduced to him because her best friend has become involved with Logan’s brother. As she is trying to leave the yacht, there is a lot of commotion and Lacy and Logan end up escaping together but fall into the hands of kidnappers! From there the story takes off as we learn more about Lacy and her father, a major arms dealer.
The story keeps you on the edge of your seat as the relationship between Lacy and Logan grows, even though they each have their secrets. They seem to have chemistry, that is beyond just physical attraction as they delve into each other’s interests and dreams for the future. Both are great and interesting characters as they go through this adventure and try to figure out who to trust including each other.

The second book in the Callahan Security series and I definitely recommend reading this series in order. Each book is a new story with characters we've met in the first book but there is a secondary mystery that runs through the whole series.
This book is about another of the Callahan brothers, Logan Callahan, the lawyer of the family. He is on the trail of Alex's best friend Lacy. Lacy is very secretive about her family and private life and suddenly heads off to the Bahamas for a "holiday". This rouses suspicions and Logan is sent to trail and investigate her. An encounter at a party on a yacht causes them to be thrown together into the back of a van and the adventure (and escape from the bad guys) begins.

I can't say I enjoyed this book more then the first in the series. There was a lot of action which I'm sure was meant to build the tension between Logan and Lacy but I found it fell a bit flat. He wasn't the strong Alpha character that I was expecting, I didn't really feel the chemistry between them and Lacy gave me mixed feelings. I found that there were many parts that I started to skim. I wish there was a little less action and a little more character development.
It was an entertaining book on the whole but not mind-blowing and just like the first book, the end came so abruptly that I even double checked that there weren't more pages that I missed.

This is only the second novel Lori Matthews has published but she is fast becoming one of my go-to romantic suspense authors. Filled with suspense, romance, and plenty of danger, Smash and Grab continues the mystery begun in book one, Break and Enter, while adding a new twist into the mix. The chemistry between Lacy and Logan sizzles and it was fun to watch the two former legal adversaries begin to view one another in a new light as they're forced to work together. We discover that both characters are much more than expected. The guy we met in book one is not at all the person I expected him to be in book two. I loved his hidden depths! Lacy, on the other hand, is a well of secrets and contradictions with family complications - and expectations - that have been steering her toward an inescapable destination. Understandably, as truths are revealed, trust is tested and Matthews inserts enough twists and turns into the story to keep me (and Logan) wondering right up until the end just how everything will turn out. It's a wild ride and oh, so worth it.

I can't wait to find out what Matthews has in store for us in the next Callahan Security novel!

Revenge is on the table; and when it’s personal..it’s deadly. Passion is in the air...and when it’s this hot...it’s breathtaking.

“No matter what you do for a living.” Meet Lacy Carmichael - a lawyer groomed for a specific destiny on the wrong side of the law.

“No matter what adventures you drag me on.” Meet Logan Callahan - lawyer now CEO of Callaghan Securities assigned to follow Lacy to the Bahamas to retrieve vital info for an existing case.

“I will love you no matter what hell you put me through.” - Instant attraction to that ‘devil in the courtroom’ he’d been nicknamed. They’d also met outside of court when Lacey’s friend, Alex, needed legal help with a case involving Callahan Securities-specifically Logan’s brother, Mitch. Their paths cross now in the Bahamas. The heat building makes a burning desire harder...when they’re kidnapped.

Who can you trust to survive when those closest are now enemies?

How can you choose the future you want, with the man you love, when family has always come first?

Adventurous. Breathtaking. Adrenaline Rush. Filled with desire—romantic suspense at its best.

Good Read

I have enjoyed book2 of the Callahan security series however I can’t say I enjoyed it as much as book 1. This book Dealing with Logan the oldest of the Callahan brothers. As ex JAG and practicing attorney also CEO of CALLAHAN SECURITY was sent off to follow fellow attorney Lacy Carmichael in hopes to find out information about a highly sought after prototype related to another high profile case was working on. What was suppose to be part vacation and fact finding mission turned out to be anything but that.

There is lots of action ,and a great number of twists and turns to the point even as the reader you don’t know who to trust. There were so many characters it was almost difficult for me to figure out who was on whose team And the importance of the prototype that had been the key focus in the first book and the main reason Logan was sent on this mission seemed to be forgotten about until almost the end of the book. Again there is a great deal of action, suspense , life and death situations, with romance thrown in. All of which makes for a good read

On to book 3 😊

This is the second book in the Callahan Security series by Lori Matthews. The first was an unexpectedly good read. This one was good as well with lots of twist and suspenseful turns.

Logan Callahan and Lacy Carmichael have known each other for years. As lawyers, they often find themselves in the same circles.

Alex, who we were introduced to in book one, is Lacy's best friend and the girlfriend of one of Logan's brothers, has the security team keeping tabs on Lacy as she travels to the Bahamas for "work", but also to know if she has anything to do with an open case.

Logan is reluctantly assigned the task and soon finds himself in the middle of Lacy's shocking secret life.

They each learn new and interesting things about each other that only intensifies the attraction that has simmered just below the surface all these years.

But will stubbornness and a false sense of loyalty keep them from fully exploring that attraction? You have to read to find out.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this title.

Fast paced and action filled:
I was drawn into the story from the very beginning and enjoyed the many twists and turns which left me madly turning pages in order to determine what would happen next. There was plenty of drama, mystery and intrigue but also some tender and sexy times too.
When Logan and Lacy are kidnapped, these former legal enemies have to work together to stay alive and figure out what is going on. They can't deny the intense attraction they have for one another and you can really feel their connection. However to complicate matters, Logan is not certain whether Lacy is trustworthy or as innocent as she has portrayed herself to be.
I did wish however that the moral implications of the unlawful business would have been explored as in reality many lives are lost or hurt because of these dealings. The overarching mystery surrounding the prototype continues and I can't wait for the next book to see how it is all going to turn out.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

'Icy fingers closed over his heart'

When the first evening starts with murder, an ambush and a double kidnapping you know it is going to be a good book! Lacy and Logan quickly find themselves on the run and have no idea who they can trust, or who is still alive to help them.
Logan has always been the straight laced, serious brother, but he quickly realises that not everything is black and white, and to keep Lacy and himself alive they may need to enter the grey. Logan has a massive learning curve in this book which sees him wrestling with how he has judged others when he really had no appreciation of their situation or job, he develops numerous new skills and learns to let go and follow his heart. The Logan that returns from the Bahamas is a very different Logan to the one who left.
The case that Callahan Security were investigating in book one flows through the background of this book, but is not part of the main story and continues into book three where it takes a more central role again, so I suggest you read the books in order, all are available on Kindle Unlimited.

Like the book before it, this one sucked me into the action and adventure from the opening words. It carries forward the sexual tension and dramatic sparks Logan and Lacy were striking from one another that were so very evident the first time we saw them in a room together. Logan’s still looking for answers to their last assignment and Lacy adds more than one new complication to his life. I recently ran across a phrase that I think fits this book: the mating call of two bad a$$es. (Thank-you R.J. Gray in Finding Teagan for this iconic phrase.) Lacy and Logan have had to armor themselves in order to deal with what they do day in and day out. But the pair have poet’s souls that cry out to one another, and I adored watching them chip away at those walls to connect. Once again, I’m nowhere close to being ready to let these characters go. My one-click finger’s itching for the next book.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.

4,25 stars for Logan and Lacy

Second book in the Callahan series and it is not strictly necessary but benefitting to read them in order. The software from Book 1 is still missing and Logan Callahan follows Lacy Carmichael. In the blink of an eye all hell breaks loose. Kidnapped, on the run, in sight of a warlord, not only the chemistry between them but also the truth explodes into Logans face. Because proper miss Attorney Lacy has a very unusual family and a famous family name.

I love the pace and the mix in this stories. Always a twist and a turn and something is bend and shaped new. Logan is not the trained Seal in the family. Still I was impressed with the skills and knowledge both of the could add to the tricky situation. I loved that lacys and Logan's secret dreams complimented each other and how easy this very closed of people could open up to each other. Can't wait to move to book 3 and get the bigger picture.

Smash and Grab is book two in the Callahan Security series by Lori Matthews, and closely follows book one (Break and Enter). While it's not absolutely mandatory to have read book one beforehand, it makes it much easier to get situated, as the two stories (and the characters) are interconnected.
To be honest, after enjoying book one a lot, I was a bit disappointed with Smash and Grab. It's still action packed, fast paced and with some hot romance thrown in - but I found it a lot less realistic. What seemed a fairly simple plot in the first instalment of the series suddenly turned into a massive international conspiracy in this book two, and it just seemed a bit over the top.
Still great for romantic suspense fans, but not as good as book one, in my opinion. Well, onto book three and let's see how that one goes.

I enjoyed this book a little more then the 1st one. I really liked learning more about Logan. Discovering he’s not his hard lawyer with nothing else inside. The chemistry between Logan and Lacey was strong. It did feel like they were running for their lives the whole book, which they seriously were. It got to be a lot of the same suspense. Does that make sense? Constantly on the run, constantly running into the bad guys and escaping. Through it all they kept their heads on and were able to get out of it. I’m just hoping the next book isn’t exactly like this one but I’m a little worried by the description it will be. 2 people running from people trying to kidnap/kill them and ultimately falling in bed together. I might put it on hold for a bit so I don’t feel like I’m reading the exact same story.

Logan Callaghan lawyer for the family security company would’ve normally refused a field assignment but when he heard he’d be getting close to sexy lawyer Lacy Carmichael in the Bahamas he was all about it. Logan noticed Lacy arguing with one of her criminal father’s men. Moments later, shots and the thugs body went overboard for good measure.

Using the opportunity to spend more time with Lacy, Logan jumps in the cab with her but they don’t get far before the cab is riddled with bullets and they’re hustled out of the cab by a gang of thugs and put on a boat. Resourcefully, Lacy and Logan escape the boat, are harried back to the island then pursued around it relentlessly by her father’s friends and enemies.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I hadn’t read the first book, but I got it and will read it now. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The suspense and actions and mystery grab you from the first chapter. This story is about Logan and Lacy and their attraction and chemistry is above and beyond. Logan’s still looking for answers to their last assignment and Lacy adds more than one new complication to his life. Lacy and Logan have much to overcome but they are both good people with positive attitudes. This is a couple that you are sad to finish reading about so I think the author did a wonderful job. Lacey is going to the Bahamas to see her dad and have a mini vacation. Logan is going to the Bahamas to check out what Lacey is up to and if she has something to do with his other case. What happens when they both get kidnapped and caught up with the wrong people? Lacey has to come to clean about who she is, but Logan will have to come clean about why he is really there. Such a great story with lots of action, suspense and some steamy scenes! I am loving this series!! Book 2 can be read as a stand alone but it does help to read the first book so you have a better understanding of Lacey and Logan's connection. I can't wait to read the next one!

I received this title as an advanced reading copy.

It was a pretty good book but maybe not as good as the first. it just feels a little off. The pacing was like an action movie. A lot of action, a lot of explosions, it kept pulling you though the story. It seemed too fast to really pull the relationship together. It only works because the two characters have a past acquaintance with one another. Overall, it feels more like something I would watch on the big screen than a book and the ending itself feels a little contrived, like it was just slapped on to have the couple finally together at the end. It just doesn't work well.
