A new era dawns in this bold new vision of the Transformers universe that will excite longtime fans and new readers alike!
Orion Pax, Chromia, and Security Operations have almost cracked the case of the Rise terrorists who killed Brainstorm and Rubble. But they aren't the only ones worried about the Rise and with a bolder Ascenticon faction behind them, Megatron, Starscream, and Soundwave seek to save Cybertron from all threats--the Rise, the Nominus Edict, and the Autobots! Meanwhile, in Cybertron's colonies, other bots find themselves dealing with the fallout of the rising tensions on Cybertron as they seek new avenues of Energon... and a way home. Collects Transformers #13-18 and Transformers: Galaxies #1-6!
I was born and brought up in Edinburgh. After studying at Edinburgh and Stirling Universities, and after a good deal of displacement activity (varying from spending three months in the rainforests of Borneo trying to record the dawn chorus of gibbons to briefly working in a tea warehouse / factory), I moved to England to enter the world of full-time employment.
As much by luck as judgement, I had a series of on the whole enjoyable and interesting jobs, mostly based in London. All of them save one have been in the charity sector, and at various times they have involved extensive overseas travel, environmental and community projects, nature conservation and fundraising.
Writing was a big feature of my childhood, and has ebbed and flowed as a spare-time occupation ever since. I sold a couple of short stories in the 1990s, but didn’t really start thinking seriously about writing novels until the 21st Century had got underway.
At the start of 2003, I turned myself into a freelance consultant on environmental projects, partly in order to devote more time to writing; since then, the writing side of things has taken over almost completely.
I am now back in Edinburgh, where I live with my lovely wife, and miss the excitement of London only a little, and only occasionally.
IDW2 reminds me a lot of "Till All Are One" and "Robots of Disguise" storylines of IDW1 for now. There is no outright war, but tensions rise every minute it seems, with a lot of actors and shadowplay involved.
The same goes for this volume. A lot of things are heating up, but the universe is still pretty much in it's introductory and worldbuiilding phase. The "Galaxies" storylines are exactly that, giving some background for the Constructicons and Cliffjumper, while giving us a healthy dose of wordlbuilding.
IDW1 suffered from too much action. At times, it seemed ridiculous how much action there was, poor Cybertron suffered explosions and local wars almost every day it seemed. While the first volume of IDW2 gave the impression that the there will be little action to this universe, volume 2 is upping the doze.
Really hope they can keep the balance.
Also, I'm sorry to say, I really hate Livio Ramondelli's art. It's way too gritty for the stories set in current time. He shines best when you have him draw scenes from the distant past.
Things are certainly starting to pick up, and this is not just an Ascenticon pun. It was a little harder to accept the rebooted paradigm in the first volume, but this second book really has things making more sense and starting to feel more familiar - in this case, it's Megatron and his allies clearly taking steps to advance their plans and move towards a more familiar Autobot-Decepticon future.
This volume combines stories from the main 2019 Transformers line and the separate Transformers Galaxies book, although I'm not 100% clear what clearly defines each - the split isn't as clear as the RID/MTMTE period. But Galaxies has given us some great character-driven stories including yet another origin for the Constructicons, bonus Insecticons, and an awesome Cliffjumper story that plays heavily on the fact he shares a mold with the more popular Bumblebee.
It still feels that there's a heck of a lot of maneuvering and positioning going on to get all the players where they need to be, which makes sense as the next arc does include the Rise of the Decepticons taglines on the covers.
Dang, I LOVE these Insecticons. Shameless little cannibal darlings. The Constructicons really did not need any convincing to go completely nuts though, did they?
Megatron and Orion are one-note meh, but DANG am I fascinated by the glimpses of Soundwave. He has a lot going on in that head and just does not share it with anyone.
Deathasaurus and Cliffjumper have an AMAZING story, hot damn, I loved every second of it! The glimpse into the horrors of Cybertronian colonization and annexation is unforgiving, as it should be. More and more we see how terrible this society is. Everyone has a different idea on how to fix it and all of them suck.
The Bumbl--ur-Cliffjumper story is fantastic. It's the best thing since the IDW reboot followed by the other Galaxies story about the Constructicons. The main series remains plodding and is just puzzling when you consider how the prior two stories point out how much you can cram into a few issues. It makes you wonder why so much of the slow rise of TF book wasn't compartmentalized into distinct character driven series rather than what's become a bit of a slow muddle.
Reading IDW2 makes me realise once again just how intricate IDW1 really is. My main gripe with IDW2 is that very few of the characters feel fleshed (hah) out. I feel like I'm getting random bots thrown at me in random roles without much justification or background and yeah. This volume was a little bit better at establishing characters - loved the Constructicons and Cliffjumper issues, and what Arcee and Greenlight had going on with Gauge. I'm hoping we'll get more of that.
The new series steps up to the plate in this collected edition, you firstly get the first six issues from the Transformers Galaxies run, focusing on The Constructicons, a group who have often been portrayed as purely psychopathic. This gives them depth and a back story that shows how they've ended up more destruction than construction. You also get an unhealthy dose of Bombshell, Shrapnel and Kickback, the Insecticons!
We then return to our main storyline on Cybertron focusing on the Autobots and Soundwaves Ascenticon Guard. There's more Kup, Sideswipe, Prowl, Arcee, Wheeljack, Gears, Huffer, Cosmos, Red Alert, Grapple, Inferno and Springer this time as the troubles roll onwards towards all out war. Of course Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream and Bumblebee take centre stage (as always) but it's good to see some old faces getting their page time as well. We also get plenty of new Transformers, but not many of them last very long!
I'm loving seeing old favourites in a new storyline and reliving my youth but where's Bluestreak? Seriously, where is he?
The story continues, and familiar players are slowly moving to their familiar roles. The added Cliffjumper story and background story on the Constructicons were well executed. The Cliffjumper story takes a nice crack at itself by making the fact that Bumblebee and Cliffjumper are basically color swaps of one another.
I gave this volume 5 stars because I think it’s a nice departure from Transformers comics of years past. It’s well written and does a nice job of developing characters, some we know and some new.
I recommend this for anyone that enjoys transformers but likes a more in-depth, gritty writing style.
With this volume, the main story arch begins to heat up. You can see the political factions beginning to converge into a larger conflict. But what really makes this collection so good is the Galaxies stories about Cliffjumper and the Constructicons; two subplots that accomplish a lot of very cool world-building.
Couple fun arcs, construction back story, and then mainly more buildup to rise/ascenticons progression to probably decepticons reveal down the road. Not really a focus on prime or Megatron, so mostly background/world building, but I’m excited for the inevitable war.
