Plain Jane Wanted

Rate this book
It’s the worst day of Millie’s life. She’s just lost everything: job, marriage and home which is all her own fault. What else do you call sacrificing ten years to support the cheating husband who just called you frumpy, dumpy and beige? Then she reads a job advert for a plain woman to work for a cranky old man on some tiny island in the English Channel. It sounds like the perfect new start
Three months later, Millie has blossomed. Sunny days out exploring the lovely island have improved her fitness and colouring. Distance from her nasty husband has restored her confidence and joy and reawakened her dreams of a wild herb café by the sea.
The icing on the cake is her boss’s sexy, fascinating, knight-in-shining-armour son. She has no idea that she’s exactly the kind of woman he avoids.
A heart-warming love story (Cosy women’s fiction/romance) set in Britain and focussing on the emotional dynamic between the characters and the woman’s personal growth.

A blend of the old and the new in this delightful debut novel!

Millie is having the worst day ever, made only worse by crashing into George's car. Determined not to wallow and trying to maintain honor and self-respect when both have been denied to her, she ends the day by applying for a job that can give her a fresh start.

Believing all the horrible things her ex said about her, she feels entirely qualified for the role of companion that requires someone plain, unattractive, and even a little frumpy. Arriving on the secluded island that hearkens back to a simpler time, she quickly makes friends and even manages to charm the curmudgeon whose relentless pursuit of previous assistants resulted in the revised job requirements.

And then she meets his son. Or more to the point, meets him again.

I really enjoyed the empowering writing that saw both Millie and George, and even the senior Du Montfort, undergoing the necessary personal growth in order to find the peace and love that we all strive for. This story was as much about Millie finding her true self as it is about finding new love. I loved how she didn't let go of that newfound confidence easily, and how she held George accountable for the very foundational trust she would never again live without.

I did think the reconciliation the end could have been shortened a bit, but it followed a necessary path and I was glad to see that the tough questions were answered. The HEA was solid, romantic, and I nearly cheered for a Millie who became a role model for all women. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Dumped and betrayed by her horrible husband, Millie embarks on a journey from heartbroken to happy. The description of the island was so good it made me want to go there and the characters all leapt right off the page, George and Millie especially. A well written, lovely romance which I highly recommend.

Excellent example of the genre -- made better by a character who grows and then keeps that growth as a part of her personality. Millie is strong and wise.

From the first page, one knows the ending, but in this case the journey was nice.

I read this in one go. Millie's sweetness and strength really made me feel for her and George is just straight up hotness with a side of ice. I was on that island with them. Loved the characters, loved the scenery, loved the writing, loved how Millie made George melt, and definitely loved Blue Sage Café. Looking forward to more.

Job: Unattractive woman wanted to work for a grumpy old man on a small rustic island where cars are illegal.
To Millie who just lost everything, including all her confidence, the vacancy sounds ideal. With nothing but a little courage, she sails to find a new start.
What she finds is an island so beautiful it awakens her dreams of a wild herb café. She also finds friendships, laughter and a new love. But before she can get her happily ever after, she must first find her lost confidence, her self-respect and the strength to be herself.
A story of courage, hope, and healing – guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings
Wow! I started this and stayed up late to ensure that I finished it. I want to live there!! Such a beautiful story (in the end) This is my first from Rose Amberly but I am lucky enough to have found some more from this author which I will be diving into straight after this review. The characters are relatable and well thought out. The story is consistently good and is definitely made for reading on one sitting. This book draws you in and is thoroughly enjoyable. I have absolutely no hesitation to recommend this book

I received this ARC for free via booksirens in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

When Millie is dumped and betrayed by her horrible pig of a husband and a terribly day to follow, she then falls a role of a companion after taking on board what nasty things her ex had told her, surely she was qualified for such a boring and plain role?

A lovely and cosy read from start to finish, this one was lovely with lots of wonderful descriptive writing about the secluded island and of course the much needed and already given character development but - coupled with growth which just makes my heart sing for a book like this. This for me wasn't just a romance but also a story about true self and loving who you are, even if you aren't everyones cup of tea!

A fun journey with a nicely predictable ending but one that leaves you cheering on for the character after her hard start!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

What a heart-warming happy read! Overall, this was a lovely book and a fun journey to read with fun characters and a fantastic setting.

The best thing about this book, in my mind, was the setting. I totally want to live on the island of La Canette. It sounds beautiful and is the perfect place for a romance story.

I enjoyed the plot- it was very usual for a cozy-romance novel, which made it pretty predictable, but in this case, I don't mind so much. That's part of the enjoyment of cozy-romances: you know where the book will end, but you don't know how the characters will get there.

The characters were well written: Millie especially. She grew and developed a lot throughout the book. George grew mostly in the last 20 pages, which is frustrating. It would have been nice to see the growth spread out a bit, to convince me that he really did change. I would have like to been invited to the conversations between him and his father at the end to understand and watch their relationship develop. I think that would have been fun.

The biggest issue I had reading this book was the typos. Letters were missing from words, and more frequently (like twice per page) there was a space after the first letter of a word. That made it frustrating to read. Each time that happened, I would be taken out of the story, simply because this glaringly obvious mistake caught my attention.

I also struggled with the change in fonts the author used to show the narrator's thoughts. I understand why the author did that, but it took me away from the story. I was distracted by the different fonts, especially George. His was always capitalized, which made me think he was always shouting, which is obnoxious, especially when he wasn't angry but just thinking. I would have preferred a different way of showing character's thought.

I consider myself lucky when I find amazing authors. Rose Amberly is one of them. I read this book in one sitting and all the next by her.

"Everyone you might is fighting a battle you know nothing about. So, be kind. Always."

Mille had a worst day starting with getting dumped by her horrible ex husband ( I am glad she did not have him in her life after all that he did ) and later crashing into George's car.

Sitting in the cafe later and thinking about what her ex said she applies for a job which states that an assistant is wanted. You might be thinking what has that got to do, the job describes the assistant should be plain and unattractive. What kind of job would state that, go and read this book out. Oh and it is on a secluded island 🙄

"When your ship starts to sink, you don't hide in your cabin crying. You swim."

Millie finds her here, she goes with the flow and sees where it takes here, which I liked lot. The personal growth of Millie, George and senior Du Montfort is empowering.

This beautiful book is filled with warmth, courage, laughter, friendship and love, lots of it. It is a cosy, easy to read with beautiful writing and descriptions you will fell in love with. The setting with La Canette island was just perfect for this story.

"Life is like wild plants; it does its own thing. Yes, there are risks, there always are."

This book isn't just about romance but finding oneself and loving who we are. The journey to coming there is worth it. Showing this with a female protagonist definitely a plus point.

I recommend this book if you wish to just lose yourself in a gorgeous setting.

A fairy tale on its own or a cross between Ugly Duckling and Cinderella. You choose…
A fairy tale doesn’t have to reside in reality and this book was superior in its telling of a forlorn young woman on her worst day ever who became the Heroine with a capital H in her own life. Others have also written about the quaint little island of La Canette which is as much a “character” as any of the breathing sort. If my French had been just a wee bit better, I would have realized La Canette means Duckling and so our story begins…
Mrs. Emeline Wainwright has a terrible, no good, very bad day and meets a gruff but white-knight kind of man who leaves his newspaper where she finds a new future. George’s reaction when he realizes who she is couldn’t have been more intriguing. Mrs. Wainwright becomes Millie Summers and blossoms so much so that George can’t help but notice. On the other hand, as a white knight he has windmills to fight. Until then…Well, this book will explain it all. Such a fantastic romance! Their internal dialogue adds so much flavor: they think what they should do while we watch them do the very opposite. Very funny and sometimes tragic though. There were a few OMG moments: chapter 18, 21 and the ending. So worth the read. I would give it more than five stars if I could. I was offered and volunteered to review this book through BookSirens. If you’ve ever rooted for the ugly duckling, read this book!

Good story

The blurb on this one caught my attention. ( so not my style I know lol)
So I decided to read it and I must say I was not disappointed from the start I wanted to know more, Millie off the bat seemed like she wasn't some damsel but a fierce woman even when broken and I think that's what kept me reading the most. This story was light and enjoyable with some pretty great quotes and some LOL moments and I read it all in one sitting because I refused to put it down so here I am at 2am writing my review :)
Well worth the read and I recommend this book to all you hopeless romantic's out there.
If I could compare the writing style to another's I would say fans of Colleen Hoover, Paige Toon. Claudia Carroll and Melissa Hill would love this book.
I look forward to reading more from this author she is definitely one I will be adding to my stalk list.

I could not put this book down! Finished it in 2 evenings while winding down for the night. The characters are so vivid and authentic. The setting/scenery is painted masterfully on the written pages. The Plain Jane is definitely a swan in disguise, she just needs to heal and in doing so heals others. Our "hero" may think he's not suffering from his own inner turmoil while playing the knight who rescues damsels in distress, all the while believing he wants an equal partner but still stays in hero mode. He may believe he's saving the Plain Jane damsel, but everyone learns the only person she needs to save her is herself -- a lesson we all can learn. Their ups and downs, misunderstandings, and growing attraction to a healthy romantic love plays out on the pages like a Lifetime Channel movie. Pick this one up for a beautiful story and heart-swelling love.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, as it was written by an author I hadn’t followed before.

It’s a great story of over coming adversity and being able to move forward in life.

Loving the story of a co-incidental meeting of two people and how their lives end up running into each other and what transpired from there.

I love seeing the main character emerge and open like a rose in full bloom. The plot has some twists and turns that leave you confused and isolated.

I am awaiting a follow up book to see what happens next.

It’s a great story and gives you hope, well worth a read.

Plain Jane Wanted was a feel good story with a likable main character and a vivid setting. Millie thinks she has had her worst day ever, but what she does not realize is that her life is about to change completely. I enjoyed this sweet romance about starting over, and what a great place to have a fresh start! I loved the descriptions of the Channel Islands so much that I had to look them up. I missed this part in geography I guess, it very interesting. I received an advance review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book , it was the first one I've read from Rose Amberley. The way she takes us on Millie's journey of self discovery and growth after such a bad time and marriage, is heartwarming and inspiring. At the same time we read about George and also witness his transformation while resolving some personal issues and dealing with other ones. There is drama, humor and romance in this story along with a very interesting storyline.

Satisfying

Until "Plain Jane," I only read romance novels by my friend Beth, a closely held secret. So don't tell anyone I said this is a good read, wholly satisfying on many levels. Its a great love story, a tale of redemption and growth and integrity. Its also extremely well written, a joy to read. Rose Amberly knows her craft, certainly, but above all she is an excellent storyteller. The characters have depth and substance. The dialogue is consistently genuine, believable. Her description is perfect, enough for us to see and to understand without being overwhelmed.

Entertaining

OK so the plot was predictable but the book was very entertaining. What is a romantic novel if the couple don't have misunderstandings and fall outs. That's the true purpose of the genre and this book really fitted the bill.

The characters were well written and mostly likeable.

I read it in a day and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

A wonderful world

I enjoyed this book purely because it created a wonderful world and whisked me away to it. Millie was a joy, such a change from the usual type. She battled on and found her way. Gorgeous George was a modern day D'Arcy.
I can't wait to read the next book.

Millie loses her job, husband and self-respect at the same time. A chance encounter with a stranger leads her to a job where a Plain Jane is wanted. She gets the job and that is when her journey of self-discovery starts. Her job is on an island called La Canette in the English Channel which has rules and climate of it’s own. She has to assist an old, paralysed, grumpy seigneur of the land who wants to drive her away. George, the son of the seigneur is a commitment averse ruthless lawyer who abhors his father due to incidents in the past. During his visit to the island, he discovers a change in his father and is drawn towards Millie. But the demons of his past make him fall prey to a misunderstanding. However, Millie this time decides to put her foot down! What demons is each one dealing with? How does Millie gain her self-respect? Do Millie and George end up together?

The beauty, the history and everything else about La Canette is picturesque. The story efficiently depicts friendships of the different people in the household with Millie. The narration evokes all kinds of feelings from love to heartbreak and from adoration to hatred. The transformation of characters over the length of the story is a very strong point. All in all the story pulls at your heartstrings with just the right amount!

Anyone who loves sweet romances set up on a gorgeous remote location is in for a treat.

Who is Millie? How does she know Henry? What conversation is replaying in her head? I find that I really like George and even his crotchety old father! Took me almost no time to warm up to George. His father took a bit more time. What happens when Henry shows up at Millie's job is just a hoot and a half!!! There were a number of misunderstandings, distrust, and assumptions that happened in this story. The question begs, "Will we find out the truth about everything and will we get an HEA?"

This book reminded of back in my teens when I would read the Harlequin romance books that had a mostly white cover with a drawing of a man and women in some sort of embrace and the women's eyes were probably closed and lips almost puckered for a kiss, then man leaning into them, or standing behind them almost ready to kiss their shoulder.

Oh - sorry, got trapped down memory lane. This was a sweet book. It went on a bit longer than I would have preferred and had zero steaminess to it, but was well written in the same style mentioned above, and I enjoyed feeling those same feelings I had when reading those books.

My four star rating means I liked it and it's worth reading.

Millie believes everything her rotten husband has ever said about her. She sees herself as frumpy and dumpy and completely unattractive because that is what he has told her. She has put her whole life and ambitions on hold to enable Henry to pursue his career and lavish lifestyle. When she finally realises he is a cheat who has simply been using her she finds the courage to leave. A series of coincidences lead her to a new job and new life on the beautiful island of La Cannette where she finally finds her self-respect and begins to grow into a confident and beautiful woman. Naturally the course of true love never runs smoothly and the story weaves its magic on the reader. A thoroughly enjoyable read which will leave you longing to live on the island.

I loved the book 4.5 *
Even when the H "stretched" it a little but i understood it.
She was growing from do-all-for-love to a independent woman
(I don't like to call her a doormat because
they are for me understandable reasons for her behavious).
They grew together from their different "experiences" and even if I am impatient by myself - for them it works.

A half star is missed because oh her ex-SOB. I wanted him "bleeding' (because of my own experience with some SOB....)

What a lovely read. It might be a tad obvious where we’re going to end up but I didn’t mind a bit. It was lovely to see our heroine Millie’s character develop from a downtrodden wife to an independent strong woman. The star of the novel is without a doubt the lovely island. I’m pretty sure it’s fictional but it definitely makes me want to go to the Channel Islands again. This is the first of 3 in a series I will definitely read the next 2.
