In this second book of the More Than a Threat series Dr. Kate Wheeler wakes in a familiar hospital, alive, and with the one person she hoped she would never see again. He is back, but why and how are questions she’s still too angry to seek answers to. After abandoning her when she needed him most, it will take a lot to win her heart again—which he is prepared to do but Kate has never been one to give in easily. It’s up to Kate to bring this man to justice knowing her father, the Dallas DA, won’t prosecute without evidence; evidence she is willing to do anything to obtain.
With the love of her life observing her every move Kate is forced to walk the fine line of deceit to keep him at arm’s length. When the charade takes a dangerous turn will Weston be enough to bring her back from the edge, or is it too late for them both? Hearts and lives are at risk and Kate and Weston’s fiery relationship returns in this second book of the More Than a Threat series.

Kennedy lives in Dallas, TX with her husband, 8-year-old son, and two Goldendoodles. A bookworm at heart Kennedy loves to snuggle up in bed, or by the campfire, with an unputdownable book. Her novels are stuffed full of humorous banter, the edge of your seat suspense, and enough steam for a great facial. If you like your heroines strong yet vulnerable and sexy, tattooed heroes who can't keep their hands off their leading ladies then this author is the one for you.

This is a Mystery Romantic Suspense, and this is the second book in the More Than a Threat series. I have read and reviewed the first book in this series before reading this book, and I have to say this is not a book you can read as a standalone. Please note I really think you need to read the first book in this series before reading this book. This book picks up right where the first book ends. Kate and Casey in this book more than the first book which says a lot because I loved their characters in the first book. You see so many different sides of Casey, and Kate makes him work to get her back. I love the text messages parts of this book. You also get to meet Casey's brother and his friends in this book. The ending of this book is full of action and suspense. I swear this book broke my heart, but then it put my heart back together. The ending of this book was a real emotional roller coaster ride, but I loved it. I have re-read it.
4.25 stars--MORE THAN A RISK is the second instalment in Kennedy L Mitchell’s contemporary, adult MORE THAN A THREAT erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on former Special Forces soldier turned body guard Casey Weston, and ER physician Dr. Kate Wheeler. MORE THAN A RISK should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger on book one MORE THAN A THREAT.
WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
NOTE: If you have not read book one there may be spoilers in my review.
Told from first person perspective (Kate) MORE THAN A RISK picks up immediately after the events of book one wherein our heroine finds herself the victim of a drive-by shooting intended to kill. Kate’s father is a prosecuting attorney trying to take down several members of the Mexican cartel but the fall-out of the shooting pulls Weston out off her life, as our hero struggles with his inability to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love. But all is not well in Dallas when Kate discovers some information regarding a human trafficking ring, and sets out to take down the man in charge, all by herself. With Weston’s return to protect the woman he loves, our hero watches from the sidelines as Kate continues to place herself in danger at every turn. What ensue is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Kate and Weston, and the potential fall-out as each are willing to sacrifice themselves to save the other.
The relationship between Kate and Weston struggles in the face of secrets and lies, and Kate’s need to remain independent and free. Dr. Kate Wheeler continues to be TSTL , and her increasing stupidity and lack of self preservation threatens not only her own life but that of the man with whom she will fall in love. You may have to suspend reality as the number of questionable incidences and attacks against our story line heroine is unbelievable. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense; the sexual attraction is palpable and hot.
We are introduced to Weston’s brother Ryan; Weston’s former Special Forces teammates including Aiden aka Tex, and his fiancée Tracy; Tyler aka Mouse, Kyle, Anne, James Steel; businessman Chase Smitson, and the return fellow physicians Eric, Meagan and Austin.
MORE THAN A RISK is another story of secrets and lies, power and control, struggles and acceptance; family, friendships, relationship and love. The premise is twisted, dramatic and gritty; the romance is seductive; the characters are energetic and powerful-the camaraderie between the former Special Forces soldiers is real and inviting. MORE THAN A RISK ends on a happily ever after-for now-as the friends make plans for the future, working together as security specialists.
Have you read the first book in this series? If not, stop and go do that! For two reasons. One, you will LOVE More Than a Threat. Two, this story carries on from the HUGE cliffhanger from the first story and you need all that came before to enjoy (and make sense) of what you find here… And what I found was awesome!
Kate and Weston are back and it wasn’t a moment too soon. The first instalment left me in horrified denial that I had to wait so long to continue their story – and what a story it is! Jam packed with an intriguing plot (with plenty of layers to sift through and savour) and uber-interesting characters, the pace was fast and furious, with danger around every corner. I love the easy style of this author who seamlessly balances suspense, sexy, emotion and humour.
“I don’t want to go back to being the me before you.”
The main characters’ relationship is complex and their dialogue and banter is equally so, rife with laugh out loud moments liberally sprinkled among heart heavy conversations. Foibles and all these two are so good together – whether arguing or loving there isn’t a dull moment to be had (Nerf weapons included!).
And they aren’t alone. This time out brings even more secondary characters to the party and they make their own mark as well. I still want to steal Eric there may be a few more besties to add to that list!
While this didn’t leave things on a major cliffie there is more to come so I’m officially on stalker mode once again…
UPDATE: I finished More Than A Threat and need to adjust my original review. It is a disservice to the author and anyone reading the review not to know the story from the beginning. My initial rating of 3.5 is not fair to the author. A lot of the flow, background, and connection to the story and characters is missed when starting in the middle of the story.
More Than A Risk by Kennedy L. Mitchell is the second book in her More Than a Threat series. This is not a standalone book. I found myself lost and frustrated because I didn’t read More Than A Threat initially. I apologize, had I realized that reading book one is necessary to understand what is happening and to connect with the characters, I would have purchased it before starting book two.
Ms. Mitchell has excellent writing skills. Mystery/suspense is my first love when reading. I enjoy a book that makes me nervous for the characters. I’m that reader who yells at the characters, “don’t go there,” or “what are you thinking,” etc. I did have a couple screaming moments in More Than A Risk. Yeah! Ms. Mitchell builds anxiety and tension with a lot of action and a fast-moving plot. The characters are complex and develop throughout the storyline.
Dr. Kate Wheeler is an emergency room doctor. She is beautiful, smart, and is in danger because of a case her father, the local district attorney, is prosecuting. Kate is a beautiful woman, and even though she is successful, she feels something is missing in her life. Kate resists relationships. Men are temporary. At least before Weston, now she is conflicted and cautious because Weston hurt her. I’m not Kate’s biggest fan. That doesn’t mean she isn’t an interesting character--she is. It is challenging trying to figure her out.
I love Casey Weston from the beginning. My favorite heroes are the complicated ones. Weston has a lot of baggage from his childhood and his military career. He is a good man with a touch of the bad boy for good measure. I feel sorry for him sometimes because of Kate and Kate’s father dislikes him so much. Kate needs to put an end to her father’s distaste for him. I want to see her take her father down a peg. (It is interesting that dad didn’t have a problem with the sleazebag doctor.) Casey is remorseful because he left Kate alone at the end of book one and that put her in danger.
I am a big fan of great secondary characters, and there are some good ones in this book. Eric is a hoot. He is Kate’s best friend and co-worker. He cares about Kate; adds humor to the story, and knows Kate better than she knows herself. Weston’s friends are my favorites. He served with them. These men and women are loyal and ready to jump when needed.
More Than A Risk picks up where More Than A Threat ends with Kate recovering from a gunshot. While still on shaky ground healthwise she gets caught up with some underworld characters involved in human trafficking. I question her decisions and the way she hurts Weston although I understand why she doesn’t trust him now. I feel for Weston as he watches her and believes she is moving on without him. I want to slap Kate for her actions and hug and comfort Weston.
I expected Ryan, Weston’s brother, to have a bigger role. At first, it felt like he would redeem himself in Weston’s eyes but he didn’t. He does give some information that is important for Kate to know and to move the story but I want him to step in when least expected. It is like he came in dropped a nugget of information, then left. I hope Anne leaves too. I don’t want to see her anymore.
Meagan is Kate’s friend. I can’t decide if Meagan is really a friend or not. She isn’t loyal, and I can see her hurting Kate. She is easy for me to dislike. That isn’t a bad thing. I like a character who is fun to hate.
I love the way this book ends. It isn’t a cliffhanger per se; the way I read it the ending is setting up another adventure for the Kate, Weston, and associates. I get the impression that Kate and Weston are on the same page and working together finally. I want to know more about Weston’s friends. I’m not sure if the intent is to move the trilogy into a longer series with multiple adventures, like JD Robb's In Death series or Marie Force's Fatal series. I hope so because that can work with these characters.
The story and the series has a lot going for it. The major plus is the ending. It truly has me hooked on the future of the series. I will read the next book because I need to know what they all get into next. I want to continue with the adventure that More Than A Risk starts.
OMG once again this author has enthralled me witht he second book in this series!!
Weston and Kate are back and wow so much is going on. Kate is broken hearted and shot recovering in the hospital she works at and in comes Weston the man that left her heartbroken and someone she thought she would never see again.
Back being her personal security guard things get angsty, funny, dark and romantic all at the same time. This author is a fabulous writer and I can not wait for the 3rd book to come out in this series!!
If you are looking for well written, great plot, fabulous characters and an emotional ride full of suspense then grab this book you won't be disappointed.
I volunteered to review an Advance Reader Copy of this book for Rockstar Book Muse
4.5 stars - If you haven't read book 1, be aware that More Than a Risk is the conclusion of a cliffhanger. Check out my More Than a Threat review on Goodreads first. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
KLM did not disappoint! I loved how she dove into Kate and Weston's story without hesitation as if we had just finished the last chapter of book 1. Kennedy immediately pulled me into the feelings that I had when the first book ended. I was back on that sidewalk waiting to see what would happen to Kate. I was also instantly anxious to experience Kate and Weston's reunion and his justification for leaving all those weeks ago.
Kate's initial reactions to her trauma were so real. It was nice to see her struggle to gain her balance mentally and physically. Too often, we see characters quickly and miraculously recover from serious injuries to progress the story. KLM took her time and used the trauma to slow our badass female down. Yes, she tried to push herself as Kate is known to do, but she also acknowledged her limitations and recognized when she was pushing herself too far beyond comfort. More than that, Kate was forced to deal with the nightmares, fears, and helplessness that built up after each trauma she experienced.
Kate's constant push to avoid any romantic entanglements with Weston broke my heart. I understood her need to distance herself from the pain that he might bring if he chose to walk away again, but I hated that she felt the need to keep pushing him away without talking through everything that transpired. Communication was key for these two, but they failed miserably in the beginning. Both still had some deep-seated issues in regard to allowing themselves to open up and find happiness. However, Kate and Weston were trying. I loved the quiet moments when their connection shined through all the pain. And the texting was adorable. It allowed them to express themselves freely and bring back their signature banter until they were ready to fully deal with their issues. Once they laid their hearts on the line, I loved watching them fight to keep that love and accept the future they never thought they'd have.
Kate was just as frustrating in the beginning of this book as she was in the first. She had a stubborn streak a mile wide and pushed every boundary to fight for her beliefs, oftentimes in detriment to herself. I was afraid she would end up mentally and physically broken before she could let her pursuit of justice go. I was also concerned that she would break Weston in the process. It was clear how much he loved her and longed to have her in his arms again. But how much was he willing to accept or forgive after all was said and done? Once the truth came out, I wondered how Weston would react. Would he aid Kate in her pursuit of justice or try to keep her locked away from the threat? It was fun to witness their new journey to avoid danger. Along the way, we were introduced to Weston's friends and got a piece of his past. I'm excited to see where Kate and Weston's journey takes them down the road as well as more from his military brothers in the next book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Readers Copy of this book.
I feel lost through most of the book because I missed the first book in the series. Great characters and an intriguing ending that makes me want the next book. In the meantime, I'm going to start book one and come back to this review.
I really enjoyed this story; it was great, so well written and totally engrossing. Boy do I feel daft though; I did not realise that this was book two in the series until I had finished and it mentioned book three at the end. When I first started reading I did get the feeling I had missed something but after the first few chapters I was so involved that it never crossed my mind again. I certainly didn’t miss having not read the first one; it did not spoil my enjoyment of the story in the slightest.
Kate Wheeler is a doctor, she is a strong woman and I do love woman that knows her own mind, one who isn't afraid to voice her opinion; even when she is in danger and she was in danger more than once. I actually got nervous butterflies for her at times.
Casey Weston can do no wrong in my eyes he is just perfection! Not sure I would have felt the same if I had read the first one as by all accounts he has made mistakes, but don't we all. He has certainly made a lasting impression on me but can he win Kate back or have things gone too far for her to give him the chance? I would most definitely give him the chance!
I haven't read this author before but I'll be waiting impatiently for book three.
“I didn’t meant to break us. I’ll fix it somehow. I have to.”
More Than A Risk picks up from the cliffhanger at the end of More Than A Threat. You definitely should read More Than A Threat first. This book was even better than the first one!
Kate’s safety has been comprised and it brings Weston back into her life. Can they resolve their feelings and overcome that the danger that is always close to them?
“Every day we’re together, I’ll fight for you. And fight with you. Together we can get through anything.”
We delve deeper into Weston’s past and gain a deeper understanding of both Weston and Kate. Threats surround these two and Kate is once again reckless with her safety which frustrated me, but Weston is his adorable, grumpy, protective self. I love him. Their banter is priceless and the chemistry between them is combustible.
Danger, suspense, steam, romance, and all the feels….Kennedy Mitchell brings them all in this book. I’m on pins and needles for third book in this series.
Absolutely adored the writing style, the romance, banter, and the burn. Basically everything I require in a book, and a dash of my favorites: bodyguards and suspense. Where has this series been? All these years I've wanted a bodyguard romance and this series was right under my nose!!! Seriously! I can't say it enough, these books have been some of my favorites of the year so far! Definitely recommend, but mmm Weston belongs to me:P
Now!!! Where the heck is book three and why isn't it in my hands yet? The cliffhanger wasn't anything like the first book, but there is still some unanswered questions I need resolving for!!!
“all I can do is lie here, on the freezing sidewalk, doing everything I can to stay fucking conscious while I bleed out from the multiple gunshot wounds I just sustained. So now I wait. Wait to either die of blood loss, which I know is quickly approaching, or for whoever shot me to come back and finish the job. I don’t know which would be worse. I want to live, I do. I want to see if he will come back. See if he will come back for me. The need for him here, to hold my hand, to keep me from slipping away, is overwhelming. But he isn’t. I’m here alone, wishing I wasn’t.”
Thus begins the book, with Kate at the gates of death. And it is that our favorite doc often doesn’t think things before doing them, such as going out without her bodyguard. She wakes up in the hospital and to her surprise Weston is there. But instead of rejoicing, all the pain that has suffered this past month without him after her left her, comes out and she throws him out of the room.
“We aren’t finished here, we need to talk.” “No! I’m done talking to you, to my dad, to Eric… hell, anyone else that’s pissed at me right now. I’m done. I’m especially done talking to you. You who just left. You left with nothing but that damn text. Well guess what, I’m sorry too. I’m sorry our lives ever had to cross, I’m sorry I pushed you to break your stupid rules and I’m especially sorry you weren’t man enough to face me when you decided what was best for me. You. Just. Left.”
Days like this pass while she recovers, he apologizes over and over again and she punishes him for his abandonment. Her father reinstates Weston as her bodyguard on condition that this time he will keep things strictly professional.
“Don’t worry, Dad. He broke what we had when he left,”
At the hospital Kate receives a visit from Sherry, the director of Second Chances, the organization in which Kate helps the victims of the trafficking and prostitution ring, and tells her that one of the girls has recognized the person responsible: Chase Smitson, one of the most eligible bachelor of the city, and Kate being the way she is, begins to devise a plan to end him, and of course, her plan will put her in danger more than once. Luckily, Weston is willing to fight tooth and nail to get her back, and little by little, he regains Kate’s trust and she lets him back in her heart.
“I gave your father my word,” he said into the darkness startling me, “that nothing would happen between us.” The bed shifted under his weight as he rolled over in the dark. “I promised I wouldn’t be distracted by you again, and I know you did too. But know this, Kate, I’m not going to sit back and let you move on without a fight. When the trial is over I want you. I’m not going to lose you again.”
“I couldn’t breathe when you were gone,” I confessed. Maybe if I freed this bit of truth it would help one broken piece of my heart heal. “I missed you so much it physically hurt. How could you leave me when you knew, you knew I was falling for you?”” I know, baby, I know. I promise, when I can, I’ll make it up to you. And if you let me I’ll never stop trying to make it up to you. Every day we’re together I’ll fight for you. And fight with you. Together we can get through anything.”“I’m ready to forgive you, Casey, I really am. I’ve been holding on to this resentment because I didn’t understand. I thought, if it was easy for you to walk away the first time what would keep you from doing it again? Each morning I woke up alone in your bed or in my own, my heart ached for you. Maybe once the trial is over, we can move past all this and start fresh. You know, maybe have a normal relationship with dating, taking it one day at a time. That’s what I want with you. And I’m willing to risk my heart again for a shot at a future with you.”
“Casey,” I whispered when I began to quiver beneath him. “Casey, this is more for me. More than anything. Ever.”” I love you too, baby,” he whispered back. His lips crashed into mine and his hips began rocking faster against me.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ “I don’t want to go back to being the me before you.” ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The end is open for more adventures of Kate and Weston and God! I looking forward for it. I’m completely hooked on this series and this author.
I have a new book boyfriend! Well, an old book boyfriend is back in my life, and I’m glad to have him back, and now with a band of buddies!
Kennedy L. Mitchell’s newest novel is greatness. More Than a Threat ended in a cliffhanger that left me devastated, but More Than a Risk picks up right where that left off. So I’ll say this – definitely read More Than a Threat first. You’ll get to know the characters so well, and there are some happenings that affect how our main characters, Kate and Weston, interact in this follow up novel. Yes, you heard me – Weston is back, but I’d spoil it if I mention how and why he’s back.
Kate, our feisty ER doc, is in trouble with a capital T. Weston, our ex military, tattooed, badass extraordinaire, is back and looking for…more. And then we meet Weston’s brother Ryan, full of insight into W’s past that Kate is desperately wanting. We meet Weston’s buddies who, by all descriptions, are H-O-T and badass as well. Speaking of Trouble, we have a new love interest….or do we?? Chase is so smooth…but who goes for smooth when you could have badass extraordinaire??
All I can say is, so much went down in the first book in the series, that in book two, Kennedy brings all the feels back – my heart can hardly take it! I felt every ounce of heartache, drama, suspense, and wanted so badly for Weston and Kate to get back together. My heart melted in so many sweet moments, clenched with every tense moment, lurched with every dangerous situation Kate wound up in (or should I say, put herself in?), and the anticipation was killer!
Kennedy has done it again – captured my attention, fed my love f or romantic suspense, made my heart beat faster, and brought it all together in a compelling story of love and adventure. As much as I love her main characters, Kennedy’s side characters are well thought out and hilarious as well – people I would want to be friends with and definitely want to see more of.
I love Kennedy’s writing style, and with the way she left this book…not a cliffhanger, but definitely leaving options for more to come…I hope there is more to come for Kate, Weston and friends!
We start with Kate waking up in the hospital hearing a familiar voice wondering why he’s even here. He just left and took her heart with him, he left when she needed him the most. Casey Weston is special forces and has returned to guard Kate and keep her safe, whether she likes it or not. I’ll be here. I told you before, I’m not leaving again.
Kate has a secret that she is keeping from Casey and her security team. When Ryan discovers what she is doing her secret becomes compromised. When Kate’s plan takes a wicked twist she realizes she is in deeper than she thought. How will Casey react if he finds out what happened?
Kate and Casey continued to deal with their feelings. Kate struggled with letting him back into her heart. Together we can get through anything. When they finally give in the sex is off the charts hot and steamy.
There is so much more, twists that put Kate in danger more than once. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was coming next. I really enjoyed the texting between Kate and Casey, I had some LOL moments. And the taunting that Casey did was great as well. The secondary characters were great, Ryan was my favorite. Kennedy L. Mitchell pulls your right in with her writing and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Reviewed by MAustin from Alpha Book Club
More Than A Risk is book 2 of this series. I have not read More Than A Threat (Book 1). To be honest I could easily follow this story. It does start at the cliffhanger moment from book 1 and we actually get some flashbacks. These allowed me to easily pick up the story. The first few chapters just drew me in and kept me so entertained. I could not put this down even though I had a few questions that if I had read book one I probably would know.
You want to peel back the layers of Kate and Weston. Weston was an easy character to connect with but I admit I struggled at times with Kate. I did not warm up to her fully until they visited Weston’s friends for the wedding. As Kate showed her emotions and opened her defences up I began to love her. However, I became frustrated with her ability to put herself in danger to the detriment of Weston.
The sexual scenes between Weston and Kate were off the charts hot and heavy. There are some incredible moments of intense emotion that grab your heart with both hands.
Weston’s friends and his brother I absolutely loved and they all gave more depth to the story especially towards the ending. I actually wanted to see more interaction with her father but again perhaps that happened more in More Than A Threat?
Chase had me at times scared to my core for Kate and the games she was playing.
This story gives you dark moments of suspense, mystery and trauma. It ties up nicely but does lead to another book.
More Than a Risk starts out with Dr. Kate Wheeler waking up in the hospital, after being shot and left for dead. She had snuck away from her bodyguard, and so she's faced with several people mad at her, including the man that she never wanted to see again, Weston. He's back, and determined to keep her safe this time, even if she hates him. But Kate is not one who will sit idle, and she's gotten herself involved in a deadly game of cat and mouse, while keeping everyone out of the loop. Kate is walking a fine line of deceit, as the love of her life knows her better than she knows herself, so when the game takes a dangerous turn, will Weston be able to keep her safe?! I love Kennedy L. Mitchell's talented writing style so very much, but for whatever reason I stayed confused a lot of this story. It usually involved all the different characters as I couldn't keep them straight. Besides that, the fast paced, intense suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, with heart pounding. Kate was a character that kept me rolling in laughter for most of the story, and the poor beleaguered Weston couldn't catch a break. I still feel like I have some questions, so I wouldn't be adverse to another story with these two as the starring roles. Anyway, even with my own issues of confusion, I can't help but to HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
What a terrific follow up to book one, More Than a Threat. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. More Than a Risk had me on sitting on the edge of my seat while biting my nails. Kate and Weston were bought phenomenal in this book. I feel in love with them all over again. This book has non stop action that will certainly have you reading faster and faster as the book carries on..
Kennedy Mitchell can write one heck of a book. This series is beyond amazing. One that will hold your attention till the very end. But yet, the story stays with you after you are doing reading.
IMO this book deserves way more than 5 stars. It is best if you read book one first so you grasp the whole story between Weston And Kate.
I really really liked getting to see into Weston’s past in this book. Especially since it was such a mystery in the first book. I loved his group of friends & that ending has me excited to see more of them in the next book! I will say Ryan creeps me out… I think there’s something much darker at play involving him.
Kate has been put through the ringer in these books. I kept thinking she was so stupid to involve herself with Chase because he was such a creep & I feel bad for everything she endured. I do feel like she’s finally finding her place & doing what she’s meant to do. The nickname the guys gave her fits her to a T!
I can’t wait for book three to dive further into this dark world & get more of Kate & Weston cause these two are meant to be. I love reading their story!
I liked the story and the characters, the dynamic between Kate and Casey was cute fun and sexy but maybe its because I didn't read the first book but Kate seemed a bit lacking. Some things that happen to Kate seem kind of washed over and not really dealt with and for that, I give this a 3.5 Stars. The book was good but wished there was more.
This is the continuation of Kate and Weston. There were times I despised Kate and wanted to thump her upside the head for being an idiot. Not sure how she managed to not get into trouble before Weston but by the end I had new insights to PTSD that really made me think. I hope to read more about all of the characters.
Ridiculous story, can’t believe this is the same writer!
This book is split into two and the first book is really good. In the first book Kate’s father who is the district attorney is threatened to drop a case that he’s prosecuting. Kate’s life is threatened and her dad hires Weston to be her bodyguard. All really logical and reasonable. THE SECOND BOOK IS INSANE!!!!!
***** SPOILER ALERT ********
In this book after getting shot twice Weston comes back to her and tries to make it up to her. Her friend Shelly (who works for the charity that helps women that have been sold. )visits her in hospital, Shelley tells Kate that one of her women has named a local prominent businessman that is behind the kidnapping of young women and selling them, so Kate’s dad can prosecute him. So Kate being a supposedly highly intelligent doctor decides to date the business man and finding enough information to be able to prosecute him! In the meantime Weston is still guarding her and trying to make up with her, all the while she’s dating Chase, the evil man. When Weston finds out her plan he goes along with it???????? NO HE REALLY WOULDN’T AS ITS INSANE AND DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!!!! I’ve read five of this authors books recently and quite honestly it’s like she didn’t write this one! Spelling mistakes, Kate who is doctor saying things she would never say, ludicrous plot, Weston turns into a caveman who isn’t that intelligent. Awful. If she had finished their story in one book I would have said it was brilliant.
This review is really about the first book as well as this one. I only read the second one so that I could have some closure. Turns out, it wasn’t really that important.
Casey Weston is a solid hero. He has all the attributes protector romance readers want. He’s hot, tattooed, ex military, dedicated, strong, watchful, tender hearted, devoted, passionate …
Eric is a great BFF in the stories. Love his character and would enjoy a book about him.
Kate is an insufferable, self-absorbed, selfish brat. I was hoping she would mature by the end of the second book. Nope. She isn’t bada**. She is stupid, makes rash decisions and then needs bailed out by smarter, more prepared, rational people. And yet, she does not change. This made both books tough to get through because the entire focus was on her. She never gave a single followed-through effort to find out anything about Casey or what he needed or wanted.
There was good storyline here. It was believable, Katie’s constant interfering attempts at heroics aside, and well paced.
If reading about female leads who just blindly stomp through life taking what they want when they want it irregardless of others is what you like then books one and two of this series is right up your alley. It’s not up mine.
I made the mistake of signing up for this book. Not realizing that it’s part of a series. So I was basically thrown into the aftermath of book #1. Normally, I’ll go read the first one before jumping in. But due to time, I didn’t have enough. So I have to rate this as the overall story from where I started.
There’s a tragic event that takes place and Kate is in the hospital. She’s very emotional and has a lot of hatred towards a few people. One of those including Weston, who is her bodyguard but at one point they had a relationship. Even though I was thrown into this story in the middle. I found myself really engrossed into this story. There’s danger, There are secrets. That make you feel a bit nervous. Cause you’re wondering why the heck is Kate so damn stubborn lol.
Kennedy really is a talented writer. Even not being able to read the first, I still had to know what was going to happen with these characters.
Enjoyed this slightly more than the first, even though the characters bugged me a few times. The fast paced plot will keep you on the edge of your seat. Keeping this review short and sweet as I can't wait to dive into book 3.
I really liked Weston. He was a good character and had the patience of a saint when dealing with Kate (although he had his fair share of mistakes). He was solid and supportive. But Kate's shenanigans distracted me from it all. I loved how independent she was during the first book, but this time it wasn't her independence and autonomy talking. She wasn't her own woman, trailing a path for herself where she could be free. She was spoiled, irresponsible, obnoxious, with a misguided heroine complex, sitting on an "I'll do whatever it takes" speech, with no regard for anyone else, and not caring that her "whatever it takes" policy might take people around her. All she cared about was playing the heroine to think she was a badass. Well, she wasn't. At best, she was a liability.
Despite her, the story was involving and the secondary characters were wonderful. They made things interesting and I hope they get their own book down the line.
