After her theft from MiliLabs, Summer has taken on the psychic powers of the seserance. Separated from connection with anyone in Migax, she must find a way to get rid of the threat the seserance still poses before she is captured. To do so she must travel to Ixar, home to the megacorps that are gaining control of Migax, in search of a renowned hacker and an expert on advanced technology.

Back at Aksel, paranoia is only growing worse. Wilders are angry at Migax's treatment of squells and are demanding a resolution. As Leafsong seeks out The Hope of Migax on her own and experiments with her manipulator powers, she finds herself testing the limits of her freedoms and discovering dark secrets about Migax's resistance, secrets which cause her to question Eeksa's true motives.

Caught in a game of deception, violence, and sedition, Leafsong and Summer are pit against not only MiliLabs but their own tempations, as they find their moral codes increasingly tested in the struggle to decide the fate of themselves, the wilders, and all of Migax.

4.5 Stars!!

I picked up the second book in this series immediately after finishing the first!

SPOILERS BELOW!

I've really enjoyed the series so far. In this book, our main characters Summer and Leafsong are separated. Summer struggles finding her footing after aiding the rebellion and becoming a wanted criminal, while Leafsong remains in school, trying to balance her career ambitions with working for Eeksa, the skeefer responsible, at least in part, for her best friend's disappearance.

One of my favorite things about the first book was the friendship between our two main protagonists, so I was hoping that by the end of this book they would be together again, and they weren't :(. But the story itself was very very engaging and it was great to read about Summer learning to use the Seserance. The balance between learning these new powers and not betraying her morality was REALLY interesting to read. I also liked watching Summer become a better manipulator, though a lot of the portrayals of the world and it's decay into corruption and discontent was difficult to read. Especially the riots and illness amongst the skeefers.

You get to learn a little bit more about the characters' sexualities in the second book as well, since both Summer and Leafsong have brief romantic interests. I love the inclusive cast of characters!

Overall the Migax cycle continues to be an interesting portrayal of a dystopian future world and I am really looking forward to the third one since I love these characters.

Despite being set in a futuristic fantasy world, the Migax books are very (sadly) similar to life on Earth. The struggles of homelessness, racial inequality, terminal illness, and political terrorism are displayed in a vivid and heartbreaking way. Like book one, however, there are plenty of tender moments and there is hope that things will turn out better in the end. One book to go and the end of this one was such a cliffhanger - I'm very impatient to see what happens to our main characters and to all of Migax.

I absolutely love love LOVED this book, the new characters are al so cool and I was intrigued by all of them. I couldn't put the book down as there was always something happening and I just needed to know what's next. Some of the conflict was relatable-though not on the same level- and I'm definitely here for the representation in this novel. Of course, Juliette is the master of terrible cliff hangers that leave me punching the air, utterly vexed for the book ending THERE, but it renders me even more excited for the next book.

I received an advance reader copy of Seserance for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The first volume in The Mygax Cycle, is a great coming of age adventure with wonderful themes. All too often, continuations of series are incredibly similar to the books that started them. Seserance, though, is a different beast to its predecessor, picking up and running with the story, but in a direction other than expected.

While sequels usually build the world and increase the scope, it's rare they do so on a scale like Seserance. Where the former novel was inward looking, Seserance looks outward. The stakes are far bigger and the story moves at a much faster pace, resulting in a bigger focus on larger than life sci-fi action. With the pace and adventure comes a freewheeling sense of fun with a great sense of humour.

More happens in Seserance, yet it is a hundred pages shorter than its predecessor, so it's natural that something will have to fall by the wayside. The biggest sacrifice the author has made with Seserance is with the book’s themes, which aren’t as prevalent. While it still touches upon genocide, discrimination and equality, corporate power and corruption, the themes aren’t at the forefront. While I miss the focus on these themes, the book maintains a breakneck pace while ensuring it kept its sense of fun. It was great to see this novel again utilise queer characters, extending to the introduction of a transgender character, once again treated with sensitivity.

The book's plot is as fantastic as its predecessor, and it moves quickly and smoothly. I’ll avoid going into detail about it, as doing so will risk spoiling not only this book, but also Gateway. The plot builds beautifully, and once again, the author closes it with a fantastic ending, which is a sucker punch. There’s a lot of great work that builds towards the ending, with plenty of twists and turns. Not only is the scope different to its predecessor, the author uses a different device for telling the story, this time telling two different threads: one about Summer, the other about Leafsong.

While one of Gateway's joys is the interactions between Summer and Leafsong, Seserance lacks these, thanks to their diverging paths. The novel doesn’t suffer for this, as it is packed full of wonderful characters. And while these friends aren’t interacting with each other, they do interact with this broader cast, resulting in a lot of heart, fun moments, and great humour.

Seserance's prose is accessible to its YA demographic. It's easy to follow and flows a little more easily than it does in Gateway. I would have still appreciated a little more colour to it, and there were a few typos and formatting issues that pulled me out of the story, but the prose easily conveys what it needs to.

The author takes the sci-fi elements she created in the first book and expands upon these in interesting ways. But like that first book, Migax feels very much like Earth, particularly in its use of the same technology we use here. The technology feels very much like the modern day with some sci-fi additions, rather than those additions being part of a world living with more advanced technology.

Seserance’s cover doesn’t mention it’s part of The Migax Cycle (though the listing here does). Where Gateway stands alone, Seserance is very much a sequel and readers who haven’t read the first book will likely feel like they’ve missed out. While the story feels complete, it does end on a cliffhanger.

While I'd have appreciated a little more colour to the prose and a more consistent sci-fi world, this is thoroughly entertaining. While the themes aren’t as prevalent as its predecessor, the trade-off is a book that has a broader scope and a greater sense of fun. Anybody who enjoyed Gateway will enjoy seeing where Summer and Leafsong’s story takes them next.

This is book two in the Migax Cycle series, and it picks up right where the first book left off. Seserance continues to follow Leafsong and Summer on their journeys to take down MiliLabs and is a nonstop adventure! The author does a great job expanding the world of Migax, allowing the reader to immerse themselves into the story. The stakes are significantly raised in this book, and I was found myself constantly anxious for the main characters. Summer and Leafsong are fighting for the future of Migax, as well as their own survival, and you can’t help but feel their struggles as your own. I found myself rejoicing at their triumphs and mourning their failures. The author is particularly good at character development, and the character growth in this book is strong but not abrupt. I can’t wait for book three!
