Can she nab the headline without losing her heart?
Elissa Tillman may be confined behind a secretarial desk, but her heart is out in the open world landing the big story that’ll place her father’s struggling newspaper back on top. When a millionaire inventor is murdered, she finally convinces her hesitant father to give her the break she’s been dreaming of.
But there’s a catch.
To get her article above the fold, she must compete for it. Her coverage of the story must outshine her opponent’s. To her dismay, the rival is none other than Cole Parker—a high-profile journalist and Elissa’s former flame.
Losing his prestigious job at the New York Dispatch is shameful enough, but the reason behind Cole’s termination almost killed him. When his former employer gives him a redemptive opportunity in Pittsburgh, all Cole can think of is procuring a second chance with Elissa. The crazy contest her father invents keeps Cole near her, but she regards him as an enemy, both to her dreams and her heart.
Can Cole convince Elissa he’s no longer the man who’d abandoned her years ago? Or will their love remain old news?

This debut was well shared over social media. After seeing it so many times and finding a copy at my library, I decided to give this novel a try.
The heroine is very career focused in a time when women were expected to be wives and not in the workforce. Elissa works for her father at his newspaper, but craves a larger role and more respect. Her former beau Cole, has learned from his mistakes and simply wants to re-earn Elissa's heart.
The story line was engaging. I look forward to seeing what this author will offer next. Solid debut!
What a blast! In Above the Fold, the Roaring Twenties in Pittsburgh comes to life, from the sooty streets to the speakeasies to the raucous world of journalism. Both Cole and Elissa are appealing – strong and sassy, but deeply vulnerable – and their romance is swoon-worthy. Rachel Scott McDaniel‘s debut novel will keep you flipping pages to the end!
What an impressive debut novel from Rachel Scott McDaniel! This girl can write!! If you're up for a race to get the scoop in Roaring 20s Pittsburgh, give this story a try. It's well-paced, with robust characterization, witty dialogue, and richly detailed historical setting and culture. The ending was extremely satisfying, and the spiritual threads were sensitively woven throughout. I can't wait to see what this author writes next.
What a stunning debut novel from Rachel Scott McDaniel!! I was so wrapped up in this story that I read it all in one sitting! It was that good! I loved Cole and Elissa! I’m really looking forward to reading more from her! Definitely a 5 star book!
I was given a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author, but was not required to write a review. The thoughts and comments are my own.
Oh, this book is absolutely one of my favorites of all time!! Debut author, Rachel Scott McDaniel nails it and I am ready for more!!
This story has it all! Swoon-worthy hero, flawed but steadfast in his purpose and love. A heroine full of gumption, tenacity, and raw but endearing insecurities. The plot is divine with mystery, twists, humorous wit, and the kind of one-liners that'll remind you why the old black and white movies of a bygone era are treasures. The writing was superb making it hard to believe this was Ms McDaniel's introduction into the world of fiction but I can tell you that I am a fan!
My first book finished in 2020 & it's set in the "roaring" 1920s! :)
Above the Fold is a fun and romantic debut from author Rachel Scott McDaniel! It has everything one would want in a 1920s tale: snappy dialogue, a thrilling mystery to investigate, a competition between rival formerly-romantically-entangled reporters, swoony romance, and deeply expressed themes of forgiveness, unconditional love, and a heavenly Father who never forsakes.
Reading a historical novel like this with simultaneous fun and light banter backed by some serious themes is a rare treat! Elissa and Cole come to life on the page as they spar (a la His Girl Friday) while some serious sparks fly! I appreciated the ways the reality of women’s changing independence and roles in the workforce in this era were depicted and kindly handled by most of the male figures in the story (we have to have a few villains, you know). Cole, especially, understands Elissa in the sweetest way and just wants her to realize it.
I was impressed with many aspects of this story, but one in particular I loved was the way it depicted 1920s Pittsburgh with its busy streets, industry, battles with Prohibition and speakeasies, and the exciting and daring life of those in the news business. Vivid depiction of setting is something that seems to come naturally to Rachel’s pen.
Thank you to Just Read Tours for the review copy of this novel. This is my honest review.
“Seems to me, Spark, you can’t value the beauty until you understand the journey.”
What a fun debut by Rachel Scott McDaniel! It has strong and passionate and sassy characters, a well-paced and smoothly flowing plot, a great thread of intrigue and suspense that plays out with surprising twists and turns, and a romance that’s frustrating but also tender and sweet. The author also weaves into the plot the growth of women’s rights and the hypocrisy found during the Prohibition era in the city of Pittsburgh during the 1920s.
Cole and Elissa are journalists who sharpen each other and set sparks professionally and personally. They both have pasts that weigh them down with insecurities. When Cole returns to Pittsburgh after a disgrace, Elissa can’t forgive him for his betrayal and the hurt he caused five years ago. As they attempt to outdo each other in finding the biggest scoop on a mysterious death of a prominent citizen, their long-held love draws them together as they learn about what true love means.
If you enjoy historical romance, you will really enjoy this novel. I received a copy of the book from Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
From the very beginning of this book, Rachel McDaniel had me completely hooked on the characters and story! Going into the story, I wasn't completely sure what to expect, but she surprised me in the best way possible. So, what was it about this book that I liked? The characters! From the first page I was drawn into the story of Elissa and wanting to know more of her past and what made her who she was. I also fell in love with Cole nearly instantly. Yes, he had a past and did some things he was ashamed of, but that made me love him all the more. The writing! I gotta say, I'm a sucker for all things 20's, so I naturally loved the storyline of this book. And, really, McDaniel did a fantastic job of drawing readers into that time period with her lyrical writing. Reading this made me want to read more books set during that time. The storyline! As I said above, I loved, loved the story itself. It was so wonderful seeing Elissa and Cole navigate their pasts and, really, overcoming them. I though the romance was sweet and absolutely perfect. Add to that the hints of mystery and the story was stellar! Honestly, the mystery itself reminded me on one of Father Brown's story's, which I adore! All in all, I can not find a single thing to complain about when it comes to Above the Fold. Rachel Scott McDaniel did the most amazing job with the book and I can't wait to read more from her! **I received a complementary copy of this book from the author. All opinions and thoughts in this review are m own.**
Above the Fold is by far the most captivating story I have read. New Author to me Rachel McDaniel and her first debut story has me hooked and is a Must read.
Above the Fold is a story that words will not do it justice. The author has formatted this story in a way that captivates you with a mixture of Mystery, Suspense, Romance, Fun Charm and Faith in God which in return molds and blends it together forming this amazing story.
Set in Pittsburgh in the 20s, when alcohol was a number #1 thing and newspapers raced to get the story first to keep their papers running; two young people Elissa and Cole find themselves in a story of a Mysterious Murder. Both eager to find out who did it and their love and drive of a story they are put to the task of finding the answers. And at the same time find the answers to heal their broken hearts. While saving the Review, her family's newspaper.
I loved this story from beginning to end. Kept you reading to find out what happened next. With their witty romantic moments and their serious ones, this book will pull you into it's pages. Author Rachel did an amazing job and as her debut book I am intrigued to read more from her. She did an excellent job in blending all together throughout the story.
I received a copy of the book from the Author/Publisher for my honest personal opinion. I highly recommend this book you will not be disappointed.
Above The Fold is a thoroughly enjoyable, well written debut novel by Rachel Scott McDaniel. It is set in the roaring twenties and women have recently won the right to vote. Now Lissa Tillman has her sights set on comparable jobs and pay for women. She is an accomplished journalist and wants her by-line above the fold in her father’s newspaper. This story has a no-nonsense heroine, a humble hero, Cole Parker, and a newspaper trying to stay afloat. It is during prohibition and the Pittsburgh Review under Lissa’s father needs some real news to break. Mr. Tillman issues a competition challenge to Lissa and Cole. Can each come up with a great story before the paper goes under? There were a few things that I didn’t see coming but a really well conceived plot twist was just perfect. The treats are in the little details such as a dog named Darcy, a pen name of Elliot Wentworth and a typewriter named Jane! I wonder who is an Austen fan? The Tillman family spiritual roots shine through and the turn around by the hero is well presented. The hero and heroine had their understandable ups and downs with touching scenes. It is hard to believe that this is a debut novel. It is polished, has great historical details, unforgettable characters and a fresh plot. *I received a complimentary ecopy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
This book was such a treat! What a fabulous debut novel! An exciting plot combined with characters that felt real made this book a page turner for me. I absolutely loved the writing style and the plot kept me guessing until the final pages! Twists and turns, oh my! Cole is my hero! His confidence and sense of humor were the perfect combination! Elissa was passionate and driven, and while I might have wanted to thump her pretty head a time or two, she was a solid character that I was able to connect with in spite of her flaws. Cole and Elissa’s chemistry was a fun and frustrating mixture providing plenty of entertainment whenever they matched wits. The mystery aspect of this story was intriguing and the faith elements woven into the story felt natural and not forced, so I felt like there was a great balance! I loved this story! I would definitely recommend it! I’m absolutely looking forward to future novels by Rachel Scott McDaniel!
With snappy dialogue and fevered plot points, this story deftly moves from endearing to gripping to swoony to funny and back again. Cole is a fine hero who is written so well, I felt at times like he was trying to win MY heart! Elissa is a driven heroine who has been kept in “a woman’s place” far too long. So when her drive to succeed and correct societal wrongs took a personal toll, it made me cheer for her all the more. This book is a great mystery, a powerful and redemptive love story, and an ode to both the Roaring 20s and the city of Pittsburgh. This is the kind of debut novel that makes forever fans out of its readers. I highly recommend it!
With a determined heroine, a beautifully crafted mystery, and a love story that sizzles off the page, Above the Fold was a joy to read! Rachel McDaniel has captured to perfection the roaring culture of the 1920’s newspaper business and the intricacies of two hearts yearning for a second chance at love. I couldn’t put it down.
Oh my word! This novel is absolutely phenomenal! I absolutely adored every moment of Elissa and Cole's story. I was swept away into another time from the moment I started reading, and I was completely absorbed in the story, to the point that I even forgot I was reading and instead felt that I was living the story alongside the characters, a true mark of a magnificent writer! Everything about this book made my heart soar, and I found myself caught between not wanting to stop reading and wanting to delay finishing because I didn't want it to end, the most delightful dilemma a bookworm can face! Above the Fold touched my heart deeply in so many ways, especially the message that we are enough because we are God's children and our identity is only to be found in Him and who He made us to be, which is a reminder that my heart was thirsting for! From page one I was blown away by the beautiful writing, when I grow up I want to write as well as this author does! I seriously loved everything about Above the Fold, it's most definitely one of my favorite reads of 2019, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! Above the Fold is a total must read that is not to be missed!
I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher which did not influence my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
What a great debut novel and I must say I need more from Rachel Scott McDaniel!! I really hope that she is in the process of writing another great story.
Above the Fold takes you back to the 1920's! I could definitely feel a His Girl Friday type vibe and I completely loved it! Cole and Elissa are great main characters with hurts that only God can heal and as He does their love for each other gets reinstated so to speak. This story truly captivates you and it has a little bit of everything in it. Love, intrigue, mystery and even that character you want to slap upside the head.
I don't want to give any spoilers but the only thing that wasn't resolved for me was Sophie and Sterling (other characters in the story) so I am hoping that her next book will be part two of this one and will let us know what happened with them!
As always all opinions are my own and if Christian Fiction is not your jam and you don't like clean reads step away from the shelf (whether virtual or real) and put the book down. But if you you are like me and love christian fiction then you will also love this and I completely recommended it! :)
My Review of Above The Fold by Rachel Scott McDaniel The cover, the Twenties, the blue, the blurb, the look of the characters on the cover, old flames, redemption, coming back to what you knew, journalists, all of this makes Above The Line a shockingly wonderful book. Signing up to read this on a hunch that it would be good was a smart idea, because this was good. A new author to be on the lookout for, the suspense, the romance, the newspaper, all tells a story of the past and makes me miss something I never knew -- the newspaper. I highly recommend this for readers who enjoy romance, historical fiction, or stories about newspapers and reporters. I received a complementary copy of this book from the author, all the thoughts are my own, I did not have to provide a review.
This book is so much fun! It felt a little "His Girl Friday" to me, which is a good thing! Cole and Elissa are such a good match, and I enjoyed their sparring ... and then once they finally got around to romance, that was good, too!
The novel centers around the murder of Cole's mentor—Cole and Elissa "compete" for the story that will run in the newspaper (although one party seems much more into the competition than the other!). This murder mystery has lots of fun twists and turns, and it was a great subplot to the romance.
Here's hoping McDaniel follows up this sparkling debut with a novel about Cole's cousin Sterling!
Disclosure of material connection: I received a copy of this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.
Outstanding debut novel. The author has written a beautiful historical novel, set in the 20s. A newspaper reporter, suffragist, daughter Elissa is wanting to run her fathers paper eventually. He hires her best friend and old flame Cole to help the paper. Cole is a swoon worthy guy and this story kept me reading page after page. I enjoyed the independent personality of Elissa. I received this book from the publisher. All views stated here are my own.
Elissa Tillman grew up in a newspaper family, and she wants nothing more than to continue the tradition by making a name for herself. But the year is 1922 and women have only just been granted the right to vote, much less gained public approval for women in male-dominated workforces like journalism. Even if one's father is editor-in-chief.
On the day when Elissa believes she has her first big break, the one person she never wanted to see again comes bounding into her life. Cole Parker broke her heart years ago and has established himself quite nicely on the East Coast. Why is he now back in Pittsburgh to steal her moment and infringe on her dreams once more?
Broken after his addictions caught up with him, Cole has returned home praying for a second chance. When his former mentor is murdered and his former girlfriend insists on sticking her nose into very dangerous situations, Cole is on the hunt to find the story—and to keep himself and Elissa alive.
The Roaring Twenties are on full display here in Rachel Scott McDaniel's debut novel. She does a wonderful job setting the scene, with more than a little danger and intrigue during the Prohibition Era. While I enjoyed her writing style and the layered plot, it took me a long time to read this book because I'm not a fan of the frenemies-to-lovers trope. That's purely personal preference, and would actually be a draw to many readers, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. There's much to be charmed by here, and I look forward to seeing more of this author's work in the future.
I received my copy of this book from JustRead Publicity Tours. All opinions in this review are my own.
Nothing beats the energy of a busy newsroom or the thrill of pursuing a hot lead. At least that’s how it is for aspiring journalist Elissa Tillman. But when the path to the perfect scoop leads to danger, self-doubt, and a competition with the man who once broke her heart, she will have to trust God more than her own investigative prowess, because there’s much more at stake than a byline.
Although it is set in the Roaring 20s, Above the Fold provides a timeless depiction of young adulthood: the allure of idealistic dreams, the pressure of family expectation, the first sting of failed ambition, and the longing for lasting love. Protagonists Elissa and Cole process their shifting landscape through their faith, in a manner just as applicable to contemporary believers as it would have been to those a century ago.
That being said, the setting IS the 1920s, and McDaniel does an excellent job capturing the Prohibition Era vibe pulsing through multiple strata of Pittsburgh society. Equally immersive is the novel’s mystery subplot, newsroom tropes, and lively side characters. Also, the romantic chemistry between the main characters is, by turns, sweet, witty, and charmingly reminiscent of Russell and Grant in His Girl Friday. Finally, the inspirational message of finding identity in God is expertly threaded throughout the plot.
All in all, Above the Fold is a smart, uplifting, and entertaining debut novel, and I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not obliged to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The 1920s are a fascinating era. A story from those days, with a young lady trying to make a name for herself as a reporter? Yes, please! Add a mystery, and I'm good to go!
Elissa was a worthy heroine. She was real. She fought for the suffragettes while she was dealing with her own inner battles.
And then...there's also The newspaper. It had been in her family for generations, and it was her life. Elissa not only wanted to be a reporter, and have her name published, but she was also convinced she was the one to take it on, but her father didn't even give her a chance.
Then Cole returns. the guy that broke her heart. He steps right back into their newspaper office, and Elissa thinks he is trying to steal her spot. I enjoyed seeing them renew their relationship, and read eagerly as their back story was revealed, bit by bit.
Then Elissa's dad offers a chance of a lifetime - a competition between the two of them - Elissa and Cole -- in getting the scoop of a lifetime! May the best man (or woman) win.
Danger, intrigue, and some unexpected plot twists will have you reading this story to the very end.
I recommend this for lovers of mystery and historical fiction.

What a debut! I love McDaniel's writing style -- beautifully descriptive without bogging down the story. Her words set the scenes and my imagination did the rest as I 'watched' Elissa and Cole find their footing both professionally and romantically. Love when a writer brings setting and characters to life in such a vivid way.
And, woohoo -- I'm a goner for reunion romances and this one is a doozy! Think clashing of wills and intermittent swooning all the way through. :-) Honestly, Elissa was a bit frustrating at times -- that girl can hold a grudge! -- but the author reveals her insecurities which make her actions understandable...but there were times I just wanted her to get over herself already. lol
An intriguing plot -- both because of the fierce competition between hero and heroine and the fast pacing with great twists along the way. And the era -- roaring twenties, suffragette movement, and the technological advancement of radio squeezing out print journalism. Lots of riveting elements to bring depth to the story.
Then there's the wonderful way the author weaves faith into the lives of her characters. There's no doubt that this is a Christian Fiction read. One of my favourite scenes includes this:
"I feel like I have a deep gash in my soul" "That's the best place for light to enter." (p 181)
Love the imagery of that light reaching all our cracked places.
A stunning debut. I'm looking forward to Rachel Scott McDaniel's next book -- The Red Canary which released November 2020.
This Christian historical romance is a well-written debut novel penned by a talented author.
The characters and setting in this story are filled with depth, purpose, and historical accuracy.
Elissa Tillman, the main character, is a young woman who is seeking to make her place in the world of journalism as a reporter, not just as a secretary or assistant to the men with whom she works. She is active in the women's suffrage movement of the 1920s and signals her support of the movement by wearing a yellow rose or the color yellow whenever possible. Elissa is strong and opinionated and is determined to reach her personal and professional goals. The book follows her journeys, including lots of twists and turns.
One thing I appreciated about this book were the faith-filled references to God and His presence in our lives.
As a history buff, I enjoyed rading the Author's Note at the end of the story as it provides details about which actual events, settings, and 'factors' from the story are true.
**This book is completely clean in language and content. :0}

I have been eagerly waiting for this book's release. And it far exceeded my expectations!
Where to begin?
This story is a page turner from the very start. Rachel's witty & clever voice carries through this novel from beginning to end.
I absolutely loved the faith and redemption aspects of this book—woven perfectly throughout the story.
I adored Elissa and Cole’s characters. Well done Rachel! Elissa, the sassy reporter, Cole the charming man who had left her behind when he should have stayed. But going away was probably the best thing for both of them. Cole was able to face his fears, conquer his inner turmoils (that nearly killed him)… and find true redemption through his Maker. Rachel, I loved how you didn’t shy away from bringing up very real struggles while leaving your reader with hope.
And the mystery! I am a sucker for mystery and adventure. Rachel, you brought your A game with this one. I thought for sure I had the ending figured out.
I was wrong. And I can’t be more pleased to admit it.
Rachel Scott McDaniel has an amazing ability to paint a picture with her words—and transport her readers to the press world of Pittsburgh in the 1920’s.
The narrative of our lives is His to pen. Captivating from the beginning to the end.
Perfect Elissa was living life under the enormous load of perfectionism and unrealistic expectations she had ignorantly placed on herself. I admired her strength of her and character in fighting and standing up for those who couldn't stand for themselves. In a time when post women were relegated to the background she choose to be and act different and that was endearing. Her heart for the paper was so wonderful to read about and I love how she was ready to do anything to save the paper. Her relating with Cole was hilarious almost throughout the book. They knew how to get on each other's nerves but their loyalty to each other was profound. I enjoyed reading how Cole decided to change his lie with God's help. It was so sweet when he decided to write his wrongs at his own peril. Together they are my best liteary partners. They were just like a well oiled machine working in perfect tandem.
The saving grace of God was one of the most precious themes to me of this book. Their second chance at love, and in saving the newspaper house was so heartwarming and reassuring of the love and miracles of God.
I received a copy of the book and this is my honest opinion.
Above the Fold was an enthralling story of loss and finding love again when you feel like there’s no hope anymore. This book was beautifully written, and I very much enjoyed reading this story and taking this journey through the 1922’s with Elissa and Cole. I also enjoyed learning about women’s suffrage and how they strived to be seen in a male-dominant profession. I could tell that Rachel studied hard and long for this book, and I appreciate the effort that she put into crafting this work of art for all of her readers. Elissa has struggles with herself in her personal life that I could definitely relate to. Cole has his own struggles, and I loved how Rachel wrote his past. I enjoyed reading about the press and how Elissa had to use a male moniker to be able to write if she didn’t want to write just a society column. It’s sad how the women had hardly any rights and unfair that the women could work at a place and be doing the same job as a man but paid less! I had the privilege of reading an ARC in partnership with JustRead Tours. If I could rate this book more, it would be 6/5 ⭐️! Great Job, Rachel!
Above the Fold is a historical book set in 1922. Elissa’s dad owns a newspaper and she likes to write articles for it. In that day and time women didn’t really much chances for real stories. Will Elissa get her chance to write what she really wants?
In Above the Fold Cole comes back after he had broken Elissa heart when he left town. Elissa is involved with someone else but will it last? Cole is hired by Elissa’s father and she is none too happy about it.
One of my favorite characters in the book is Cole’s mother. I loved the story involving her. I would have liked more of his mother in the story toward the end.
The book is very suspenseful and has a good mystery. This book is first novel by the author. I loved Elissa and Cole’s story. Historical’s is my favorite genre. There has to be more research done for this type of genre. I look forward to reading more books from the author.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from JustRead Publicity Tours. This book review is my own opinion.
Rachel Scott McDaniel (the author) penned a detail-oriented, history honoring, riveting read in "Above the Fold."
I found this story to be very impressive for a debut book! I look forward to reading more stories penned by this author.
The author's story research into the world of Journalism was very impressive! It read like a book written by a newspaper journalist with years of experience on the job. The realness to this story was amazing!
Mystery laden moments in the plot were carried out in a way that reminded me of the popular show "Murder, She Wrote." The heroine was a lot like Jessica Fletcher in that respect!
Loved the line where the meaning behind the book title "Above the Fold" was revealed (toward the end of the book)! The ending was wonderful, sweet, hopeful and just as amazing as the storyline.
"Above the Fold" was a really beautiful story!
*The author provided me (Alexis A. Goring) with a complimentary copy of Above the Fold (book). My opinions in this book review are my own.
I enjoyed this historical fiction novel centered around a second chance at romance storyline. Cole and Elissa had enjoyed a memorable romance until time, distance and choices separated them.
Years later, their lives collided together in a busy Pittsburgh newsroom and their reunion was off to a rocky start. There were adventures to be had, competitions to win and trust needed to be rebuilt from the ground up.
There were real dangers to be faced and mysteries to be solved. There were opportunities for brokenness to be healed and for relationships to be mended and strengthened.
As the story took place in the 1920’s, I enjoyed leaning many things about that time period. The author brought the Prohibition Era to life with speakeasies and many colorful characters.
I enjoyed reading about Cole’s and Elissa’s journey back to one another. Forgiveness, faith and multiple second chances paved the way to their heartwarming reunion.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
