First he wanted her heart, now he wants all of her.
Former Army soldier Atlas Kane thought he found a home in the military, but after his last tour he returns a broken and haunted man. The respite he finds in the arms of a woman is brief and when a car crash takes her from him, he’s lost and desperate.
Brooklyn has longed to be normal, but a lifetime in hospital has made that impossible. Until the day a life-saving heart becomes available. Grief stricken Atlas will do anything to get back any piece of his past love. Now, despite a new chance at life, Brooklyn finds herself in a different prison--- Atlas’ home. What starts as imprisonment quickly becomes more as the two begin to heal each other.
But when Brooklyn is kidnapped by one of Atlas’ enemies, Atlas must not only fight to save her, he has to prove he loves her. And not just because of the heart that beats inside her.
Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Note: This book contains details of violence, PDSD, slight BDSM, R+18, and abandonment discussion and scenes that may trigger some readers. Let this be your warning.
Brooklyn has led an “unwanted life.” Nobody wanted her as a child. She had moved from one foster home to another due to her condition. Plagued with congenital heart disease at a very tender age, Brooklyn was in and out of hospitals. Her foster parents realized that they unprepared financially and emotionally to take care of her. Due to this, her view of the world was bleak, but she kept fighting for her life each day. Twenty-five years later, Brooklyn got her heart. Little did she know that she would share this with someone who was not ready to give it up.
Atlas Kane is an alpha-dominant with a brutal past – wrought with scars and pain due to the war. When he came back, he came back broken but found a love that fulfilled him. Sadly, this love was stolen from him – too soon, too unexpectedly, and in a very tragic manner. He blamed himself for years of his weakness to take action when it counted. After realizing that he might have a chance to get even just part of the past back, he is willing to sacrifice everything – his heart and soul – to have the love he lost.
The book is told from Brooklyn and Atlas’ POV and is a colorful and intriguing one. It is an extraordinary all-consuming love story with many internal conflicts between the main characters. I want to point out that Atlas and Brooklyn are not the strong heroes that they perceive themselves to the outside: Atlas, the triumphant war-hero and alpha-dominant businessman, while Brooklyn, the survivor ready for her second life after winning “her war.” Looks can be deceiving – they are “broken anti-hero characters.” This critical factor makes them human and relatable. For Atlas’ case, it has been permeating and going out-of-control that people around him were concerned.
Atlas’ background made him who he is. As a war veteran, he had seen too much death and suffering. Flashbacks of the war give readers only a slice of what he saw and experience. Adding to this, the sudden loss of someone dear to Atlas spiraled him into someone he did not recognize anymore whenever he looked at himself. Readers will see a lot of emotional turmoil within Atlas. His solution was a bit far-fetch with regards to Brooklyn, maybe “fixing” him again.
Brooklyn feels broken, even when she was “patched up,” but is trying her best to change that by enjoying her new opportunity. She is looking forward to her plans and a brighter future but unexpectedly got swiped up to live in Atlas’ home. Her captors or Atlas gave her reason for keeping her. All I can safely say that it is not for money. Instead, it is something more profound and strange.
The connection between Atlas and Brooklyn is strong and unique. The attraction was uncontrollable and charged. There was a slow-burning, unrealized feeling internally between them, which Brooklyn tried to deny and quash down with the reality of her situation but with no avail. Readers will feel the “push-pull” emotions in each word spoken and thought raised by Atlas and Brooklyn. It defied the laws of science and entered into the unexplained, spiritual side.
As Brooklyn start learning about Atlas, she later has to decide if she can: (1) trust Atlas and his friends after taking her (or is this a Stockholm Syndrome scenario –> it is not!), (2) accept herself as a “consolation prize,” and (3) save him from demons that were relentlessly coming for him.
As Brooklyn and Atlas grew into knowing each other, something evil lurked around Atlas – waiting for revenge. I believe the reason for the “revenge” is a petty and lame one for that character. When this all blew up in Atlas’ face, the safety of Brooklyn was priority one, and even if he would lose Brooklyn in the end. Atlas was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for her return by losing it all. The race to save her brought so much suspense that got me on the edge of my seat!
The book dives into a side of Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that not many people write about in these genres. It is violent, disturbing, and destructive. PTSD is a serious mental condition plaguing many people, especially war veterans, in various degrees.
I am happy that Brooklyn was able to appease “the beast” inside Atlas when it counted, and at the same time, convince him to keep the proper help he needed. It took the whole book before that resolution came about. The ending was beautiful with the self-realization and made it more meaningful – that their pasts led them to the HEA that they both solely deserve.
The supporting characters help round out the story nicely – Beth, Aiden, and Rhys. They provide humor, honesty, and grit to the already broken main characters. They are also essential in keeping Atlas from losing himself. They also gave Brooklyn space and support to sort through the situation with Atlas. The group’s particular skill set is what will save Brooklyn and keep Atlas sane. They are the family that both main characters need in the end.
Before I forget, I love that the author brought in a few pop culture references. a) Humor by referencing the classic Beauty and the Beast story with supporting characters to match. It lighted up the already crazy situation that Brooklyn found herself in – from living her life peacefully to being held captive by a stranger that only her heart seems to know.
“They want to know who’s the Candle and who’s the Clock.” — Atlas, Cold Heart
b) Urgency and Atlas’ brand of “justice” by bringing in Dirty Harry mottos: “if you want it done right, do it yourself” and the “shoot now, ask questions later.” Some readers may find this over-the-top, but I believe it fitted for the situation, plus it worked well.
In summary, I knew I would like Cold Heart, but I did not realize how much! It has been a while since I dove into dark romances, and I am glad to have gotten a chance for this book.
Cold Heart will consume readers with its mystery, suspense, and drama. It will make you believe in the possibility of love beyond death. That as long as the heart beats on, it will find its forever soulmate. The imagery provided by the author was spot, and the emotions bounced out of the pages from the beginning. The haunting prologue will imprint on the reader’s mind and will set the stage for this seductive unconventional love story while ending spectacularly in the epilogue.
I recommend this to dark romance fanatics and second-chances readers, and redemption tropes.
This was my first book by Ruby Wolf, and I admit the blurb got me intrigued, and somehow describes very good the plot of the book.
This is the story of Atlas and Brooklyn, two people with a hard past, Brooklyn was staying more in the hospitals, than at home, Atlas was in the military where he experienced a traumatic event. This shaped them in a way, that they completed each other, and while their journey of finding one another was filled with bumps on the road, in the end they thrived in being the perfect person for each other.
" For Atlas and me, our love for each other was strong enough to heal each other's scars and replenish our broken souls."
The way that the book started gave me a little bit of hard time to understand exactly the story behind, and was maybe filled with the some more sex scenes, but the second part I found it very beautiful, in the sense that we actually can see how they healed each other. How Atlas was fighting with himself and his memories, how Brooklyn got out from her shell and started to help Atlas. This is a story of how friends can be your family, of trying to get over the past and heal your wounds, and in the end love.
I hope that Aiden and Rhys will have their own story.
Cold Heart tells the emotional story of Atlas and Brooklyn as they fight their separate pasts to get to their future together.
I really liked the premise of the novel. The warts moment of Atlas’s life gave Brooklyn the hope of a life that she’d been unable to really hope for before. I did feel terrible for everything they both lived through before they found each other.
There were times that things were pretty predictable, but it wasn’t enough to make me dislike the plot and there were some twists in there to keep things interesting.
There were times the wording seemed stilted and some places needed a bit more editing that took me out of the story. Overall, it was an interesting story.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it was a good read.
This book follows the story of Atlas and Brooklyn, and it’s heartbreaking. I struggled to connect with the characters initially, and the build up is a little slow. However, once the story got going, I enjoyed it.
It’s a heartbreaking read that will keep you captivated until the end.
This was my first book by this author but after reading the blurb I just knew that it was a book I had to read. And I wasn't disappointed. Took a little bit for me to get into the story but once I did it was hard to put it down. It was really emotional and intense. I will definitely be reading more from Ruby Wolff.
Wow i have no words for this amazing story. This story starts out slow tell it gets builds up the plot that is emotionally intense, dark, twisted, heartbreaking, full of regret, hurt and hope.
Atlas and Brooklyn embedded themselves into my soul ...
Author Ruby Wolff captured MY heart and soul in the Prologue with the poetic words of a broken man who has lost his one true love, his soul mate, the angel that God created just for him, to soothe the demons and the fire that haunted him at night. These are the words of a man who is barely existing, and is most certainly not living. Hells teeth, I was bawling my eyes out and I hadn’t even started the story yet!!!!
This book captured my interest and imagination because the romantic idea that the heart, the universal symbol of love carried with it the love of its owner to its donor intrigued me.
Ms Wolff introduced us to a rather feisty Brooklyn who had fought to live, and with her new heart, finally had a chance at a normal life. Soon after the transplant came the dreams of the man with blue eyes. And with those dreams of intense blue eyes that ‘saw only her’ came feelings and manly scents. This, THIS is what I was wanting to be reading. We knew from the blurb that Atlas was going to be taking Brooklyn because he needed the love of his heart and soul back, and I needed this book to be not just an everyday kidnapping plot. And, oh holy crap on a cracker it wasn’t. It was so much more than I could have imagined. I speed read the damn book firstly because I had to, then again more in depth, and my heart still breaks for Atlas, for his best friends who, while they disagreed with him, would do anything to help him heal, and I am still in awe of Brooklyn who was more of a fighter where it counted.
Lucy had promised Atlas “until my heart beats its last beat, I will love you,” so strictly speaking, her heart ‘was’ still beating, and while he knew Brooklyn wouldn’t be the same, he still needed the heart that had promised to beat for him, because he in turn had promised to love her always, “She is mine, and no one else deserves her love but me.”
There is nothing simple about this storyline. It’s as profound as its characters, and while the blurb sounds dark, I don’t believe it actually is. It’s set in a sex club, and yep, it’s pretty hot and heavy on the steam, so if was anything to knock my rating back slightly, it’s some elements of that area between Atlas and Brooklyn that I personally struggled with, but that is on me, and me only. Upon reflection, however, given what Atlas had been through, am I surprised? No.
This book is more about the sacrifice of oneself to save others, fighting to live and love, and most importantly, the after-effects of military PTSD, and trying to bring about some semblance of healing; for ALL parties involved. Read the book, and you’ll see what I mean. I sincerely hope that Rhys and Aiden are making noises in Ruby Wolff’s head right now because I’d really love to hear their thoughts!!! There were also some lighter moments of humour where Brooklyn rang rings around Atlas’ friends, and all this worked to absolutely round out Cold Heart into a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Twice.
It’s a great romantic ex-military second-chance-at-love read. 4.5 Stars 🖤
Cold Heart by Ruby Wolff was intense from the get go, grabbing me and refusing to let go with every twist and turn, every held breath and sigh of relief.
Oh Atlas and Brooklyn, my heart broke and was mended so many times throughout this book, but it was thoroughly worth the turmoil, and the emotional rollercoaster ride of a journey that this story took me on captivated me from start to finish!
Atlas, brooding, tall, dark, and handsome with piercing blue eyes, stoic, Atlas. Oh he really got to me. So distant, a wealth of untapped emotion ready to pour out for the right person.
And Rhys and Aiden? Got to love people that have your back like that. I loved seeing their kinship and friendship, like brothers, on the page. And Beth and Milo too, I love getting to read about chosen family.
And then we have Brooklyn, sweet, innocent Brooklyn. Oh, I just wanted to hug her and cheer her on and let her know that everything was going to be okay! A heavy weight on her shoulders, and not an easy life up to that point, she really got to me as well.
If you're looking for a story that will grab you by the throat and not let go, give you all sorts of warm and fuzzies while still enjoying tension and chemistry, look no further than Cold Heart!
P. S. I want to visit The High Club, sounds utterly fascinating!
P. P. S. Are we getting stories for Aiden and Rhys, pretty please?! Maybe Aiden and Gabby?!
WARNING! THIS BOOK CONTAINS TOPICS LIKE PTSD AND BDSM.
Narrated in Dual POV and a Standalone with No Cliffhanger.

So the blurb covers most of the plot and I really enjoyed reading the book.
Although, the last few chapters seemed a little fast paced to me. A little slower pace would have earned half more star from me.
This book has depth. Besides the obsession Atlas continues to have for his past love, he knows there is a woman out there who has a connection to his past. Brooklyn has ways been a long survivor. Her strength and convictions guide her in life. Brooklyn's first contact with Atlas is less than desirable. She experiences a gambit of emotions with many unexplainable and worrisome. This book had me sad and hurt for both these characters. It made me think about the fragility of life and to be grateful for those I love in my life.
Atlas was in the military and thought it would keep him grounded in life. He goes through difficulties and ends up back home. He meets a woman and settles down for a time until she is taken from him in an accident. Brooklyn has been in the hospital most of her life. She receives a life saving heart for a transplant. She ends up being taken captive by Atlas at first then taken by his enemy. Can the two broken people make a life together?
Holy smokes this damn book! This story tore my heart from my chest, stumped on it, crushed it and then gave it back! This took a piece of my heart and soul with it but I'm completely fine with that. I'll never forget this book. Never. Ever. Like how could you even?
Atlas can be pretty fierce when he wants to but he is also super sweet, affectionate and precious at the same time. He cares for every single person in his life very deeply and looks after them like they are his family. Deep down he is so hurt, damaged, broken and suffering. He is hunted by his past that refuses to let go.
Brooklyn has gone through a lot in her lifetime and endured so much emotional pain. But it made her stronger than ever. Despite of it all, she has the best personality and she has stayed her own amazing self. She definitely had me chuckling a couple of times, as well. Atlas has always been in charge and no one has ever dared to defy him so I love that she challenges him and makes him work for her love.
The character arc in both Atlas and Brooklyn is off the charts! This book is so heart-wrenching as these characters are so scarred from inside out and that totally broke my heart. There were so many moments that made me want to get inside the book, wrap my arms around them and hug tight.
The chemistry between the two is incredible. They mend their hearts and souls together. Atlas has so many demons within him but it's like Brooklyn is the angel who chases the demons away from him and brings him out of the darkness and into the light. They simply ignite each other. I love them with every fiber in my body!
This is full of darkness and ruthlessness, and it truly is a wild roller-coaster that you can't even begin to envision! There's so many layers into this book. It's dark and it's twisted but in the best possible way.
The writing, like the book, is phenomenal. The way it makes you feel is just insanely amazing. Like, how can you be this beautiful with words? The story and the writing captured me immediately from the prologue alone. It's addicting and mesmerizing the whole way through.
Cold Heart, damn you for being so perfect and completely destroying me! But no actually, destroy me anytime!
“I knew that this heart was my soul mate; I knew that this heart belonged to me. Maybe I was waiting for the right person to have the heart. Now, I have everything – the heart, the soul, and the woman I love with me.”
*I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review*
Atlas and Brooklyn’s story is the first book by this author that I have read and I enjoyed the depth of the story, so captivating. I found all of the characters extremely interesting and likable and would love to read the rest of their stories too.
What both lead characters had been through in their past was horrific in different ways. My heart just about broke for both of them. In fact, in this story, you feel every emotion with the characters wanting to help them as well as simply comfort them. I will admit there were the odd times when I wanted to shake Atlas, 😆 but sorry guys, he is a male after all!
This is a fast-paced story with what appears to be a reasonably simple storyline but isn’t at all. As the story continues more complexities are revealed and although I found it a little bit predictable a time or two, there are some good twists. Cold Heart is a book I recommend to everyone as it is thoroughly entertaining.
Brooklyn has spent most of her life in and out of the hospital. Her parents couldn't handle it so they gave her up. She has been with multiple foster families but they never last because they can't handle a sick kid and all the hospital visits. Brooklyn has been alone through it all. She didn't have anyone to rely on. All she had was herself. She is strong, brave and fierce. Atlas is complicated. He can be a jerk at times but he really does mean well. He's been through war and suffers with severe PTSD and he lost the love of his life. He's been living a half life missing his other piece. He kidnaps Brooklyn but not with any malicious intent. In his mind his intentions while a bit skewed are good. He wants her heart. A heart that should only belong to him. He wants it to love him and only him. Things start to click in place as the story moves along. It's a heartbreaking read but worth it. I love all the side characters and hope they will get their own story. These two characters have had to endure so much. Will atlas be able to let go of the past for the future that is standing in front of him? Can Brooklyn forgive Atlas for the secret he's keeping from her? Can two lonely souls who have went thru hell and back find the other half of their heart? Read to find out!
I recieved an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Atlas and Brooklyn’s story is emotionally intense, dark, twisted, heartbreaking, full of regret, hurt and hope. When you love someone so deeply and they are taken from you, your world implodes and that’s what has happened to Atlas and all he wants is the light in his life back. Plagued by memories of the past, he fights every day to survive until he finds her. Brooklyn has struggled her whole life and finally on a path she’s excited for, becoming her own person, dating and being with friends until it’s all taken away.
This book was nothing that I expected and everything I wanted from an author. You feel everything Atlas goes through, the struggle, the pain of loss and the hope for something new. You aren’t really sure where you are being taken on this journey but all you know is that you want to go on it with Atlas and Brooklyn. I loved Rhys, Aiden and Beth and I hope we get their stories. This book is one you will not put down, I absolutely loved it and highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book.

Ruby Wolff is a new author for me, but to say I’m glad I was introduced to her is an understatement.
Cold Heart follows the journey of Atlas and Brooklyn.
Atlas, a broken man whose demons torture him in the most brutal way. The trauma he has been through is nothing short of heartbreaking. His determination to find and reconnect with the only heart that has ever belonged to him, although HOW he went about doing that, was messed up, the reasoning behind his actions were heartwarming and sweet in the grand scheme of things. My heart bled for Atlas and the PTSD he suffers, it had me wishing nothing more than for him to find peace and live a fulfilled life.
Brooklyn captured my attention straight off the bat. Her determination to live, her fight and charisma had me rooting for her from the get-go. Brooklyn’s sheer will to be defiant and follow her own lead was a welcomed read, and by the end f the book I was in total awe of her.
There’s nothing simple about this book, and be prepared to have your mind blown!
Wow what a story. Although it took me a bit to connect with Atlas, it was clear from the start both main characters had been through an awful lot. This was the true embodiment of second chances, on multiple levels for both characters. Yes I struggled with some of the plot at first, but by the second half, when Atlas really opened up, I was turning pages like a mad woman, as had been dying for the military stuff, in fact would of loved to have seen more of it. Boy was it brutal though. Also yes some other things could of been delved into more, but some of that is my wanting every loose end tied up. If anyone's struggling, stick with it, it will mostly make sense by the end, and is worth it.
Where do I even start? Cold Heart was so cold and jarring that it left severe painful and gut-wrenching memories behind. I have never been so invested in a story as much as I was in this. Ace was the epitome of broken, bruised, and a tortured alpha hero. This story brings out such awe-inspiring reactions that I wasn't really capable of feeling. It is emotionally tormenting and at the same time, what a beautiful chaos! I couldn't put this story down, regardless of reading it a hundred times. Ace will forever stay with me. Thank you Ruby. You wrote a great story about love, heartbreak, darkness, heat, possessiveness, and much more... Can't wait for more characters.
If this were on KU I wouldn’t have finished it. I bought it because the blurb was sooooo good. I preordered an author I had not yet read. Since I paid for it I finished it, but I was disappointed. The story had holes that created circumstances that were not believable. There were some grammatical errors but, we are all human, so I can usually overlook them. But the errors worsened as the book went on. It’s like the editor got bored as they read. Anyway, the premise of the book was great and I liked the heroine and hero. The story just was not there. In an effort to be unpredictable the author made the story unbelievable.
Cold Heart This is the first book I’ve read of Ruby’s and I enjoyed it. The story is captivating interesting and keeps you intrigued. All the characters are interesting and I’d like to find out all there stories in the future. atlas and Brooklyn have been through so much my heart broke for them but this story shows how love can heal. This was an emotional rollercoaster with many twists and turns to keep you interested. I liked the reference to beauty and the beast this was a modern-day love story with a twist
Atlas and Brittany will have you on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. Each new page I read I found a new twist and each new broke my heart just a little bit more. I was enthralled with this book I couldn't put it down. I laughed, cried, and fell for these two and wanted to know more. Can two broken souls find love after all the heart ache and loss they have been thur? An amazing read that is unique and different but will keep you glued to your Kindle not wanting it to end. I can't wait to read what this author had next.
This book is a bit slow at the start but once you get into it I think you will enjoy it as much as me. Atlas lost the love of his life, but finding out where Lucy's heart goes he gets his pals to go fetch the woman. Brooklyn has been in and out of hospital all her life awaiting a heart transplant. When she is well enough she's goes home. Things take a turn and this is where the story starts to pick up pace.
Atlas loses the love of his life, Brooklyn recieves her heart. Atlas wants her heart but soon falls for the girl. Atlas took a while for me to like but the side characters were wonderful! Brooklyn dispite having a heartbreaking life, she has a heart of gold. I wasn't sure about this story when I started it but I am glad I did. Good job!
This was a first time read for me by this author and I simply fell in love with these characters and there storyline.iam going to go back and read her blacklist as I enjoyed this story so much.this book is written well with a story that will keep you engaged and engrossed from start to finish I will definitely look forward to more fro. This author
This book is amazing! This story was not at all what I thought it would be. So many emotions. It’s heart wrenching and mysterious. Atlas and Brooklyn have quite the story to tell! I absolutely loved it!!
4* Atlas is determined to have Brooklyn he knows her heart belongs to him. Brooklyn is just beginning to live after receiving a new heart. The circumstances she meets Atlas in aren't ideal but why are his eyes so familiar? A first time author for me and I enjoyed reading this book.
A new author to me and I enjoyed her book. I loved Brooklyn’s journey and even though Atlas’ side of things was messed up I get why he done it. And the way everything worked out in the end was good. The book was definitely written well.
