We are the unhinged.

History is in pieces. A time-travelling celestial being has interfered in the natural order, resulting in a series of butterfly effects that have reset the world as we know it. In Manhattan, the Twin Towers stand. Russia has collapsed and China is the dominant world superpower as America draws further into itself.

In New York, a suicidal immortal named Harper Whitaker finds every attempt to end her existence futile. But when the supreme realm of Atlas comes calling after the release of a deadly plague, Harper if forced into reversing the paradox. Assigned to murder seven reincarnated individuals, she must navigate an unrecognizable America to accomplish that goal.

As the remnants of humanity turn to tribalism, murder and ransacking, the lone immortal’s list of assassination targets comes with a caveat — not all of them deserve to die, and some may be instrumental in rescuing humanity’s soul from the carcass Earth has become.

Can Harper put the greater good before her death wish? And even if she can, what will be left for her afterward?

I was bound to like this - my favorite genre has long been viruses and I have read many virus and end of the world type books that posit what would happen if history has been tweaked or if a bad virus hit humanity. Of those books I have read, many are not very believable and they lack the depth of feeling other books have, as if they have to choose between the subject matter and the quality of writing. Having read Gagnier's other works I knew he could find his way around SciFi and his familiar characters but what I wasn't sure is if he could handle science as deftly as he has other controversial or complex subjects. I should have assumed he could, because he does here without difficulty. It is as if every subject matter he turns to, he makes his own and I think that is why his writing is so compelling and hard to put down. He is not only a person who literally pours everything into what he creates but his creations are utterly believable and very well paced and plotted. It is that meticulous attention to detail and the quality of his ability as a writer that ensure his success no matter the subject. To some extent this is more his genre than ever, he's in his element and he's wielding the familiar with the new with the same dexterity any of the best authors you read possess. This particular novel is one of my favorites because of the subject-matter. I love Gagnier as a writer and thinker but this really kept me on the edge of my seat because I absolutely am a huge fan of this genre and where he takes his twists and turns. I can't reveal anything other than to say, if you've never read Gagnier this is as good a place to start as any, and if you're familiar with the arc of his story telling, reoccurring themes and reunited characters you will NOT be disappointed! Gagnier has positioned himself not only as an author of immense versatility and sensitivity, but he's rocking the SciFi genre so hard, I expect he'll literally carve his name into a planet some day.

Respect to Death

Nicholas Gagnier has cranked up the multiverse to new highs in the Book of Death Volume 2: Underworld Earth. It is the current vogue and a theme common with Marvel, DC et al… but retrofitting previous stand alone novels means the author is himself working in or on another plane. If this was always his original story arc, then kudos… but if Mr Gagnier has genuinely thought ‘you know what, I could do this, with that…’ then he has lifted genius from 10 to 11 on the Spinal Tap spectrum of sound. Excellent word craft as always, and a unique penmanship which grips immediately from the beginning, and always pitching the characters to the right performance on page, as any great director does on film. The greatest thing about this novel, is that I’m claiming an easter egg within that is just for me… maybe ;-) CM TR

Respect and regards Death.

A Proud Father (for clarity, not the author’s - but if I was, I would be)

I have enjoyed numerous stories by this author and this story did not disappoint. The story is time-bending and an alternative universe or time dimension. This author has a skill for bringing his story alive so that I can live it! As with the first book of Death - Leviathan, this book is amazing. I always look forward to the next book by this author!

Underworld Earth is the second book in The Book of Death series. It is the consummate battle of good vs evil in the wasteland known as Earth. This story has well-developed characters, one of whom must kill seven people whose previous deaths were undone by the Breach. The storyline is fast-paced, well written, and thought-provoking. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Wow! Things really escalated in this second entry of 'The Books of Death' by Nicholas Gagnier.
This time, the dial is turned more towards the fantasy end of things, rather than police thriller, but the action is not lost in the least. We leave what was an FBI investigation (though Ramona's saga is far from over) and we're catapulted not only in the lives of quite a lot of other characters (fans of Olivia & Hale, you might recognise some), but also a virus that - if you read the book during the pandemic like I did - definitely resonates on a whole new level.

Angels - or Nephelims - enter into play, and a whole new floor and a new level of players for the reader to feast on is introduced.

They say the second entry is the most difficult and Gagnier definitely knocked it out the park, innovating, rather than re-heating the same recipe he used in the first. Well done!
