When the rule of law fails, dishonest politicians get even dirtier. Shane and Julianna can't compete with the debased dictators of Jackson County unless they are willing to bend a few rules of their own.
Shane Black escaped the city by the skin of his teeth. But his well-stocked mountain retreat is now the target of a local despot who gained power through bribes, payoffs, and shady politics. Mayor Hayes had few scruples before the collapse. Now that he's the only law around, he's down-right ornery.
Road trips are always a bad idea in the apocalypse. But sometimes, it's the only option.
Shane's group spent a massive amount of resources battling it out with the corrupt local government. Without fuel to keep security patrols running, everything they fought for will be lost. Shane must head up a caravan in search of the vital commodity to keep the town alive. The trip promises peril at every turn, but if they don't go, everyone is dead anyway.
The new world is fertile ground for old feelings.
Julianna and Shane are forced to work together closely. Will her heart soften toward him or will she hang on to her grudge? Being so near to her, yet feeling pushed so far away proves to be a thorn of constant sorrow for Shane. Despite his heartache, he mustn't allow it to distract him from the mission at hand.

As with all books by Mark Goodwin, this book contains no profanity and no embarrassing sex scenes. However, if you're offended by conservative principles and references to Scripture, this book might not be for you.
Mark Goodwin is a Christian author and host of the popular Prepper Recon Podcast which interviews patriots, preppers and economists to help people prepare for the uncertain times ahead. His previous fiction series, The Days of Noah spent several months at number one on the Amazon best-sellers list in multiple categories. His first series, The Economic Collapse Chronicles, also hit the Amazon best-sellers list in several categories.
The first book in this series mad me want to follow up with the second. After the death and violence of this book I've chosen not to continue the series.
Goodwin is riding on his coattails of earlier books but copying the message just as I said in my review of the previous book. His first books weren’t as well written because he used words over and over and over, but at least in some of the earlier books he had prayer before monitoring areas, and so forth. So like our country before us, these books are spiraling downward, away from Christian principles. We’re no longer under the rules of the OT but under grace of the NT (OT Bible verses used at chapters). How does one witness to a preteen when kidnapping she and her mother, especially when no attempts are made to witness? Granted, troubling times are ahead of us, I’m afraid; but we are still accountable to our Lord to witness to others. None of that occurred in either this or the previous book. No stars for originality, changing the same, tired story, or really having a semblance of Christian values, especially the guise of using innocent and disabled children as a pawn while writing as the guise of Christianity.
The second book did not disappoint, the story of Shane Black continues. They try living in peace but that isn't the case. They must find fuel, so they go on the road. When they get back tragedy has struck and Shane goes off the deep end. In the end things calm down by you know things are going to start up in Book 3. I'll be reading it this weekend can't. Highly recommend these books, if you don't get them you are missing out.
If any part of this book is remotely possible then we need to prepare for a very bleak future. It doesn't take a giant leap to look at where we are and how quickly it can get worse. Weaving in the headlines of today makes this book hard to put down. Pray and prepare.
Couldn't finish it. Once the "good guys" went the way of torture, murder, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, they were no longer people I could root for. They were no longer good guys. I don't want to fill my head with that.
Another great book by Mark Goodwin. I love the characters in this series. I would recommend this book and all of Mark’s books. I’m listening to the complete box set on Audible.
This book had me on the edge of my seat. No sooner had Shane Black gotten out of one situation, he found himself in another. The character really matured in this book as the times dictated that he grow up quickly. I can't wait to see where the next book's storyline takes us.
There are a lot of bad decisions and I was reading saying this is not a going to turn out well. It's a world where bad things happen even with good intentions. Worth the read.
Very enjoyable story with lots of hurdles in the way, like the sheriff and mayor. Loss of love ones and best friends, supplies, has life isn't easy . So many people counting on him. So much regret and guilt but through it all ... Great book. Thank you.
I guess I've read about ten of Goodwin's novels so far and I like his writing and the supporting ideology very much. It seems that I got started with his more recently written books. My only suggestion is that although he does a great job of selecting relevant chapter intro quotes, in the last series I noticed he was using the NKJV. Although that version is respected as a good translation which retains the majesty of the KJV, the writing style is obscure to most modern readers. Although my graduate degree is in theology, majoring in the New Testament, and I have owned and read most English translations (and stumbled through Latin and Greek versions), I would leave the fancy writing to the scholars and lovers of 17th century literature. Otherwise full kudos to Mark Goodwin for creating informative, well-written and exciting novel very relevant to contemporary America.
After an excellent first book I was honestly disappointed in this one. I think I expected too much but this was such a let down I almost cannot put it in words. The first two thirds of the book was almost unrecognizable compared to the first book,it was honestly only the last third that sort of saved the story for me. I'm only giving it a 4 star rating based on how much I I enjoyed the first book and on how much I will hopefully enjoy the third book.
Middle of the trilogy the book powers along just as hit and heavy as volume one. Hard to write much without spoilers, so basically if you enjoyed volume 1 keep going!
I Started this book at 10 in the morning a d read it through, finished at 630pm. Fast paced action packed and great character development. Mark Goodwin paints a very believable scenario
I had marked my calendar for the release date of Black Swan 2. I was not disappointed in book 2 it was I think better than book one. So keep it coming and thanks for the little prep extras too.
I'll leave this short, but, other than being a great read... man, shit got intense on multiple occasions here. There were times when even I thought Shane was taking things too far. I couldn't stop listening to see what was going to happen, though.
