This was a nice surprise and is apparently based on a spin-off from Chip and Dale and the Rescue Rangers, a kids cartoon from way back when. The show was a little bit after my time, but I remember catching an episode here and there when my brother watched it. This story focuses on what may have been a minor character on the show and expands it to be a full-fledged Mouse Watch organization, the brainchild of Gadget Hackwrench, a famous inventor who has created their society to protect their world from the R.A.T.S (Rogue Animal Thieves Society). This book was a lot of fun and full of cool spy gadgets, corny cheese jokes, an evil villain, and a girl who dreams to join the watch, ever since her brother was killed by a monstrous rat. The huge theme here is that working together as a team is always better and more effective than doing things alone and that everyone is equally important from the head honcho all the way down to the smallest member of the team. While the message was a bit heavy handed sometimes, I still very much enjoyed this story and think it is perfect for 3rd-6th graders, although clearly older folks can enjoy it too. The description of this book as Mission Impossible meets Mice in Black is perfect.

Thanks to #JJGilber, #NetGalley, and #DisneyBookGroup for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinions.

The Mouse Watch is a cute, fun, and adventurous story about some mighty mice who are daring and brave as they fight against the evil R.A.T.S. They not only save humans but other creatures as well.

We find out at the beginning that Bernie really wants to be a Mouse Watch agent and she will do about anything to do so even if she breaks her leg. She wants to do it mainly because her brother would be proud of her if he was still around but he was killed by a rat, but he wasn’t just an ordinary rat. Because her brother was killed by a rat she has a very big prejudice against them.

Bernie’s wish comes true when she gets an invitation to be a recruit, but she finds out that not all recruits become agents. She also finds out that she isn’t the only new recruit that a rat named Jarvis, who is a coding wiz, is also a recruit. She is not happy with this because rats are never in the mouse watch and she of course doesn’t like rats so she takes an immediate disliking to him without getting to know him.

While in their first training simulation something happens and they end up being left alone in the headquarters having to figure out on their own what happened. Not a mouse watch agent insight they find out that the R.A.T.S have stolen Gadgets sleeping formula and turned it into something else that is making humans walk around like zombies. Rats in lab coats are giving orders and there is one in charge who is bent on taking over the world.

Bernie has to learn to try and trust Jarvis even though all she can think about is how a rat killed her brother, but she learns that not all rats are the same and working together they make a good team.

I really liked this novel and thought it has a good underlying theme of not judging others because of a prejudice you grew up with that you need to get to the person (or rat).

Bernie was a very flawed character and at times she really aggravated me with how much she wouldn’t even give Jarvis a chance. She didn’t even ask him why he wanted to join mouse watch since he is the only rat in a group of mice. She just instantly judged him and thought him a traitor. Thankfully she does learn her lesson and grows as a character. I really liked Jarvis as he was always so polite and tried to be friends with Bernie and never sneered at her for being a mouse and small.

I think this would be a fun book for young readers and I think adults can have fun with it as well. I think one thing I wish it had was illustrations. This would have been a perfect book for a few illustrations so we could see Bernie and Jarvis in action as well as the bad guys. I highly recommend this one!

First, you met Chip and Dale and the rest of the Rescue Rangers. Now get ready for the newest team of agents that are small in size, but big on saving the world. Meet the Mouse Watch, led by Mouse inventor Gadget Hackwrench and Bernadette Skampersky's greatest hero.

Bernie is a small-but brave-mouse and is over the moon to be one of the youngest recruits to join the mouse watch. Jarvis, the other recruit, is a sensitive rat with a big appetite and unmatched puzzle-solving skills. Both are eager to prove their worth, but before their first day of training is through, Bernie and Jarvis find themselves at the center of an evil plot orchestrated by the Rogue Animal Thieves Society (R.A.T.S.). Soon they are thrown onto full-on action, as they learn to work together to save the Mouse Watch-and the world as they know it.

I want to join the Mouse watch after reading this book! It is action-packed adventure and the characters are awesome, especially the main mouse herself, Bernie. If you like Men in Black or Mission Impossible, than this book is for you. And watch out for book two, Mouse Watch Underwater coming May 4th! This is available as a Hoopla E-book.

4 stars = Great! Might re-read.

This was delightful! The world-building is excellent (although distracting from the action of the story at time). There's a good balance between the character pieces and the action pieces. I loved Bernie and Jarvis. I would definitely read a sequel with these characters. I didn't catch the fact that this is a Rescue Rangers spin-off until I started reading, but that was a fun discovery. I think kids are going to LOVE this! It feels a bit like Mouse and the Motorcycle and a bit like Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Don't miss this one - would be awesome for a bedtime or classroom read aloud!

This book was really cute. I could see reading it during a read aloud time in the classroom. Finding out how Bernie makes it into just trying out for the Great Mouse Detectives. The Mouse Detectives are back and are trying to save the day against the R.A.T.S. when Bernie comes right in for training. Kids will love to hear the mice become spies and will love the main character Bernie.

I received an electronic ARC from Disney Book Group through NetGalley.
Gadget from Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers steps out of their shadow and forms her own group - Mouse Watch. Her agents battle for good all over the world. All Bernie Skampersky wants is to become an agent. Her invitation comes and she sets off on this adventure. Her commitment began after her brother was killed by an escaping convict rat. Ironically, she's paired with a rat who wants to be part of the Mouse Watch for reasons of his own. Together, they are the only ones who aren't captured by the R.A.T.S. when one of their own betrays them. They end up rescuing humans and mice before they've even completed one day of training.
Gilbert introduces the characters and environment and builds on this to spin a tale of adventure with just enough suspense for mid to upper elementary level readers. Parents will remember Chip and Dale but readers will pick up enough background from the story to make the connection and see this new direction. A few soft plot points don't change the overall effect. A cliffhanger ending hints at further adventures to come.

How to describe The Mouse Watch? Hmm... Men In Black with mice, fighting against R.A.T.S., complete with the awesome inventions to fight against the evil organization. And, yes, R.A.T.S. is capitalized. It is an acronym that stands for Rogue Animal Thieves Society. Our main character, Bernie, is a mouse who is already small for a mouse and wants nothing more than to join the Mouse Watch, which is an organization of mice who work to stop the bad guys and help the good guys. The problem is, not only do you have to be recruited based on something awesome you've done, but her parents treat her with the kiddiest of kid gloves, which is only exacerbated when she breaks her leg in a zip line accident gone bad.

Forcing Bernie to stay in bed and not do anything until the doctor says it's okay to remove the cast, Bernie gets a message that could suddenly make all her dreams come true - if she can convince her parents to let her go to Union Station the next day to meet the recruiters.

When she gets to Union Station and meets with the recruiters, Bernie is taken to Mouse Watch HQ for training, only to find out that just because she's going through training, it doesn't mean she will become an agent. The organization only has a few spots available and there are many more potential recruits than spots. Not a problem for Bernie, though. She WILL be an agent. No one is going to stop her. Well, no one, she thinks, except her training partner Jarvis. Jarvis, who happens to be a rat. Not necessarily a member of R.A.T.S., though she definitely suspects that Jarvis is a spy for the R.A.T.S.

Still, proving that Jarvis is a spy would certainly ensure her an agent position, so that's okay. All they have to do is train together. Well, that was all they had to do until they are kicked out of a virtual training session suddenly to find that EVERY. SINGLE. AGENT. in the Mouse Watch HQ has disappeared and humans are acting like zombies, obeying the orders of the R.A.T.S.

Will Bernie be able to figure out what's going on while still keeping an eye on Jarvis? Is Jarvis an actual spy or is Bernie letting her prejudices color her views? And just how are the humans being turned into zombies?

I absolutely loved this story. Bernie is a force of nature; her determination is so strong, so steadfast, that I began rooting for her almost immediately while also cringing at her interactions with Jarvis. Every new conversation with Jarvis reveals a bit more about her own past traumas, especially surrounding the loss of her brother.

For his part, Jarvis is also a great character. Though it's not visible immediately because the story is told from Bernie's point of view, Jarvis has a strength to him that is also amazing. After all, he is a rat who is trying out for a position in an organization of mice - an organization of mice who defeat RATS. There is a reason, of course, but it ties in with the plot of the story, so I don't want to say what it is because ... spoilers.

Not only was I having fun listening to the story, but the narrator, MacLeod Andrews, was also clearly having fun reading the story. His performance truly brings the story to life and I definitely want to listen to the next book in the series. Fingers crossed that my library gets the audiobook book in soon for me to borrow.

So, long story short: If you like secret agents, spy organizations, villainous organizations bent on taking over the world, and big, over-the-top plans to carry out such planes, then you will almost certainly enjoy this book. I say almost certainly because there is probably one person out there who will end up emphatically stating they didn't like the book. LOL. Anyway, all that to say, you'll probably like it so go ahead and pick up a copy to either read or listen to. Then you can join me in reading and/or listening to book 2!

OMG this book was SO MUCH FUN to read! I read it in two sittings (it would have been one but I had to go to work the next day!). I am always on the look out for mouse or rat stories that give me the same feeling as Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and this one comes extremely close.

Bernie Skampersky has wanted to be part of Mouse Watch since she was six years old. Mouse Watch is like a rodent CIA but with cooler technology. Bernie is small for her size but mighty in spirit. When her invitation arrives, she can hardly believe her luck! However, not everyone invited to Mouse Watch passes basic training but Bernie is determined to try and join her hero, Gadget Hackwrench of Rescue Rangers fame, to save the world one good deed at a time.

I grew up watching Rescue Rangers so I made the connection immediately. Kiddos do not have to be familiar with the show to love this book but millennial parents will have fun sharing Gadget's backstory with their children and how she was the gizmo genius on Rescue Rangers. This book was an absolute delight to read. I enjoyed the characters and Bernie's spunk and determination. JJ Gilbert is extremely clever at his utilization of people sized things in a mouse-sized society. The whole time I was reading this I thought it would make a fantastic movie. My only caution is even though the book is aimed at a younger audience, it might not be the best bedtime story for small kids because there are some scary parts but those are few and far between. I would be thrilled if this became a series and eagerly await the next adventures!

My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced reader's copy. My opinions are my own.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This book follows Bernie who longs to be a member of the Mouse Watch, a secret organization headed up by the legendary inventor Gadget Hackwrench (of Rescue Rangers fame). Bernie is small, but brave. Eventually she is recruited and joins fellow new recruit Jarvis to begin training. But Jarvis is a rat and Bernie does not trust him.

Day 1 of their training though begins rough as members of R.A.T.S . finally begin their biggest steps to take over the world from the humans. Can their bravery and smarts help them save the day?

My thoughts (and some spoilers, so beware):

Overall, this book will have some fabulous appeal for kids, so I do recommend it for general purchase. Plus a Disney show tie-in is never a bad thing.

There is a great sense of adventure throughout and some definite peril and real stakes at play. And the overcoming challenges side will definitely pull in some readers.

There are also some good themes of trust throughout: Bernie's parents who must trust her to go off by herself, Bernie's trust in herself that she is brave enough, Bernie deciding who to trust in the Mouse Watch.

My main issue with this book: topic of animal testing.

The main villain is Doctor Thornpaw. A rodent who is described as "more monster than mouse and more robot than rat". Thornpaw is the result of animal testing and now has motorized metal arms and legs and no reservations about destroying humans. It's hard to not feel somewhat sympathetic to his hatred of people given what he says he has been through. But I feel like the subject of animal testing is really glossed over in the text. It is mentioned as they introduce his character in Chapter 1 and again it is revisited toward the end of the story as he monologues to Bernie. My issue is that I feel like the Mouse Watch would at least mention some kind of sympathy towards him for what he has endured that his turned him into a monster. And wouldn't this be something that they might try to champion to put an end to?

That's my two-cents on that, but this is coming from an animal-loving vegetarian, so others might not remotely see this the same way.

But I do consider this a good purchase option.

Join the smallest Mouse Watch recruit in Disney Books’ first volume of their new The Mouse Watch series, which brings the nostalgia Chip and Dale and the Rescue Rangers to life in the pages of a book for a new generation. READ MY FULL REVIEW: https://yourmoneygeek.com/review-disn...

Bernadette (or “Bernie”) makes for a precocious and endearing protagonist as she tries to gain the attention of the Mouse Watch through increasingly daring ways, before finally earning her place in the organization. Think James Bond, but with mice.

J.J. Gilbert has delivered audiences with a fast-paced, engaging, and clever glimpse into a familiar world. Gilbert deftly creates a world around the cast of rodentia, building a vivid universe that will have readers looking at mice in a whole new way. There certainly are elements for more advanced readers, particularly where Dr. Thornpaw’s human experiments are involved.

She is inducted into Mouse Watch not because of her codebreaking skills, but because of her bravery. Bernie is thrust into action, going from raw recruit to superagent in a short period of time. She’s paired with a rat named Jarvis, who helps her transform her preconceived notions about rats, after her brother’s demise at the hands of a mechanical rat. That alone makes for a nice allusion for young readers, teaching them not to judge people who are similar to them, just because of past experiences. We do like a good book with morals.

While Dr. Thornpaw makes for a terrifying villain, the true villain is introduced in the final few pages of the book which is sure to leave readers saying, “Yes. We want to know what happens next!”.

The Mouse Watch arrives on November 3rd, 2020.

My boys and I have fond memories of Disney Channel cartoons accompanied by picnic lunches on the family room floor followed by naptime. Well, strictly speaking, I was the only fan of naptime.

Because my boys are each about five years apart in age, I've enjoyed quite a history of Disney animation: Ducktales, Rescue Rangers, Kim Possible, Darkwing Duck, Recess...countless adventures full of mystery, adventure, action, and happy endings.

When Bernie was young, a rat killed her older brother. The animosity she feels as a result has caused her to lump all rats into the same box. As a result, when her dream of becoming a hero and serving on the Mouse Watch comes true, she is sorely disappointed when her training partner turns out to be a rat. Through the course of the action, her prejudices come to the surface and this provides an opportunity for growth as she seeks to overcome the evil plans of Dr. Thornpaw, a rat with an abusive past as a lab rat in a research facility.

The Mouse Watch invited me to feel all the feels again, with a new set of characters linked to favorites from the past like inventive Gadget and the adventurous duo: Chip and Dale. Technology, coding, problem-solving, adventure, mazes - you name it - the action in this story is constant, and the modern technology with mouse-sized innovations will provide excitement for middle-grade readers.

Cute story of mice who run secret society to rescue mice and humans from the evil half-rat, half-robot led group who wants to dominate humans.

Bernadette "Bernie" has wanted nothing more in her life than to be a part of Gadget Hackworth's secret Mouse Watch society. She has self-trained and repeatedly applied to the elite mouse secret agent society for years. One day, after a particularly dangerous stunt in which she breaks her leg, she receives notice that she has been selected as a training recruit for Mouse Watch. When she arrives at Mouse Watch, she is horrified to learn the other new recruit, Jarvis, is a RAT! Not trusting her new partner, even though she has been reassured by her trainers that he has been thoroughly vetted, Bernie vows to be on guard around Jarvis while also becoming determined to to excel at every piece of training offered to her. In the middle of their first training session, the Mouse Watch headquarters are abandoned to an emergency and Bernie and Jarvis are left to fend for themselves in what ultimately becomes their first mission.

Elementary school aged readers will enjoy the action of this book which is softened by the descriptions of the human items that have been repurposed for mouse use and the cool tech gadgets developed by the mice themselves. This books reminded me of a modern, updated version of Disney's "The Rescuers." The ending left enough room for the possibility of companion books.

A cute story for kids but I can't see adults getting much out of it. Which is fine since we're not the target demographic. If you grew up with the Rescue Rangers like I did, this probably won't actually appeal to you much, as it has a very different feel and is only loosely tied into the original series. Gadget is mentioned a lot but only makes two appearances as a presenter. Chip and Dale are only mentioned in passing. Monty and Zipper aren't mentioned at all. Also not really a big deal for me, though, because when I decided to read it I didn't even realize it had anything to do with the old cartoon.

Overall, the story isn't bad. Unoriginal, sure, but there wasn't anything wrong with it. The dialog was pretty terrible, though, and made me physically cringe a few times, especially when Bernie would speak to Jarvis (for example: the way she accused Jarvis of being a thief because he's a rat felt so awkward and unnatural). That was a big weak point for the book. I also found it strange that the author switched between made-up brand names and actual brand names, though that may have been Disney's decision. And it's silly, but I found their usage of 10G to be bothersome because it didn't make any sense...but that's a relatively minor issue.

I probably won't recommend this to kids unless they are looking for something specific that this would be relevant to, but I imagine most of them would like it better than I did.

I will admit that I saw a few episodes of Rescue Rangers years ago, but I don't really remember anything except Chip & Dale. But this middle grade novel takes a character from the Rangers and tells the story of a whole new organization that has spun off from the original Rangers - the Mouse Watch. After losing her brother, all Bernadette (aka Bernie) wants to do is become a member of the Mouse Watch and help save others. Okay, and maybe track down the evil rat (literally) who killed her big brother right before her eyes. But when a powerful drug is used to take control of humans all over New York City, will tiny mice be able to help? And can Bernie survive long enough to even start her training as a recruit to the Watch?

There are tons of mini-gadgets, lots of references to cheese, danger to face and puzzles to solve, and some growing up to do along the way. Bernie learns a bit about being friends, judging by appearances, and putting the overall good ahead of personal desires. Once readers finish this introduction to the Watch, they will be ready for more missions with Bernie, Jarvis, and the rest of the unit.

Great for those who enjoy super heroes, spies, and have watched "The Rescuers" and don't mind tiny agents with big hearts. The tagline "Mission Impossible meets Mice in Black" captures the feel nicely.

OMG! Gadget from Rescue Rangers is in this book, as well as Chip and Dale! Well, Chip and Dale are mentioned, not really a part of the action, but still....

There are so many reasons to like this book. First, Bernie is the smallest mouse compared to most. She has always been determined to join the Mouse Watch and learn from her hero Gadget, the founder of the Watch. She soon proves to those who doubt her, due to her size, that big things can happen from small mice. Second, Bernie learns that she needs to learn about a partner, if she can trust them or let her stereotypes take control when she is paired with Jarvis, a rat. Everyone knows rats can't be trusted, especially when a rat is the one who killed her brother.

I might not add this book to my syllabus, but definitely will encourage my students to read it because Bernie, like many of us, make snap judgments and get annoyed when others make snap judgments about us. She grows through the story and learns that she may need to look into the character, rather than what the image they give may be.

I can't wait to get my hands on the other books in the series and determine if they are as well written and enjoyable as this book was.

I was given the opportunity to read this by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Bernadette "Bernie" Skampersky wants only one thing - to be part of the Mouse Watch, a chosen group of mice constantly ready to save the world. They are led by her hero Gadget Hackwrench. Her ingenious inventions put James Bond's Q's gizmos to shame. You never know when you'll need a pop-up motorcycle or parachutes that fit over your shoes. Bernie is an excellent puzzle solver but it is her fearlessness that brings her to Gadget's attention. As a new recruit, she is angry that her partner is a rat named Jarvis. It was a rat who killed her brother. Now they must work together when Dr. Thornpaw, a rat who survived several hideous experiments by humans and somehow created metal replacements for the body parts he lost, has plans to turn people into rat-obeying zombies. Bernie and Jarvis escape one perilous predicament after another until Bernie comes face to face with Dr. Thornpaw for one final showdown and realizes that he is the one who murdered her brother. Heroes come in all sizes and Bernie proves herself to be small but mighty, gaining a friend for life in Jarvis. The author displays his animation skills in the descriptions of both characters and action. It is easy to see this new series being adapted to film.

Got a problem with RATS (the Rogue Animal Thieves Society)? Never fear – this is a job for the Mouse Watch.

The Mouse Watch tells the story of Bernie Skampersky; a small, young, brave mouse who tries everything to catch the attention of famed mouse inventor Gadget Hackwrench and be welcomed into the Mouse Watch: a group of elite, crime-solving, tech-savvy agents. Her mission to prove herself as being anything but small compliments the Watch’s mission: to save the world.

Who better to bring to life a Disney story described as “Mission Impossible meets ‘Mice in Black’” than Disney veteran Jason Lethcoe?

Lethcoe, who published The Mouse Watch under his pseudonym J.J. Gilbert, has worked in Hollywood for most of his life as a director, animator, producer, and storyboard artist for companies such as the Walt Disney Studios.

J.J. notes: “My books have to be about themes that I strongly believe in or I can’t find the conviction and will power to write them.” Thus, The Mouse Watch is about more than just cheese and fighting crime. It is a lesson in hard work and - just as importantly - team work.

The Mouse Watch is described as "Mission Impossible" meets "Men in Black" which I suppose is fair although I think that discredits the most important parts of this story which are its many themes. Teamwork, selflessness, destiny, acceptance, alienation, all these (and more) help tell this heartfelt tale dressed up with a tech-heavy spy/adventure sensibility.

Main character, Bernie Skampersky, is our strong-willed but imperfect lead mouse who is on the cusp of greatness. It's her protective but sympathetic parents who help her open the door to an adventure of a lifetime, and with the help of a rat named Jarvis, she'll learn the inherent value of friendship and teamwork, all while helping each other overcome trauma. This relationship in particular proves to be key as Bernie's most important attribute, courage, the will to act, not only makes her attractive to the Watch, it helps Jarvis break out of his shell.

With direct ties to Chip 'n Dales Rescue Rangers and inspired by The Rescuers, this middle grade story is sure to please a wide array of readers.

Dear Disney, please keep giving me books about cute small critters (like mice and chipmunks) going on adventures. This is my favorite niche category and I live for it. Sincerely, me.

This was so fun to read, I really enjoyed it. Gadget steps into the limelight as the best character from Rescue Rangers (We all knew it, I'm saying it) and starts her own organization. It has all the adventure you'd want in the cute trappings of animals - ala Great Mouse Detective (the movie, not the book.) But Bernie is a new character and a great precocious protagonist. It reminded me of Holly from Artemis Fowl - trying to prove herself and her worth through increasingly daring ways.

A fun read for middle grade, with familiar characters as background, and in an adventure setting worthy of a kid James Bond. I am so glad this is a series!

I'm not sure if I would of picked up this book on my own if it wasn't for book club. I enjoyed how imaginative this universe is, taking place after the events of Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers. It was really tough getting into it and nearly gave up. But, about 3/4 into the book is when it really picked up bumping up the score to 3 stars. The book takes a turn and you're suddenly hit with high stakes and all the feels.

Overall, I think the 8-12 age group would have a blast with this title especially if they enjoy spy books, Disney, and mice. I'm aware I'm not the intended age group and admittedly I did cringe at some of the jokes and cheese puns.

This was a lot of fun. Nothing questionable or inappropriate for kids, just good clean fun. The story is simple but engaging, the characters are fun, and the lesson about making friends and trusting people different than ourselves is well worth the time exploring and badly needed in a world being driven further and further apart (ironically enough by Disney itself).

Bernadette is fun and incredibly relatable and Jarvis was a lot of fun, the Mouse Watch is a great continuation of Disney's old Rescue Rangers, which I enjoyed well enough as a kid.

I listened to the audio book, and the narrator did a great job with the voices. I think my kids would have loved it and really been excited to hear more. This might be our book for the next road trip.

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if a top-secret spy agency was run by mice—then buckle up, because The Mouse Watch is a total blast!

Think The Rescuers meets Mission Impossible, with a dash of heart and humor that makes you root for every whiskered agent on the page. The main character, Bernadette (Bernie, if you please), is fierce, funny, and full of determination. And the world-building? Let's just say, you’ll never look at a drainpipe or a discarded cereal box the same way again.

Jason Lethcoe has created a world that kids (and kids-at-heart) will fall into headfirst. It’s fast-paced, clever, and full of secret passages, gadgets, and big-hearted moments.

Perfect for ages 8 and up—but I had a very good time tagging along on this mission myself.

A great middle grades book full of action and adventure. Gadget from Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers has started her own intelligence organization called Mouse Watch which recruits mice that are skilled in hacking, inventing, and bravery. Bernie and Jarvis are the two newest recruits to Mouse Watch, but their first day doesn’t go as planned. As the story unfolds, Bernie and Jarvis learn the importance of teamwork, not judging others, and how all parts are equally important. A great book that the whole family would enjoy. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

Bernie is tiny, even for a mouse, but she is mighty. That's what her beloved big brother Brody always told her, before he was cruelly murdered by an escaped lab rat. To honor Brody's memory, Bernie yearns to join the Mouse Watch, an elite group of miniature heroes led by the great Gadget Hackwrench herself. It takes all of Bernie's bravery to attract the Watchers' attention, all her puzzle-solving skills to decrypt her invitation, and something extra to make it through the most action-packed orientation ever. A cute, cheesy adventure. Thanks, Netgalley.

This is one of those books kids will love, even though I found it predictable, with characters that lacked depth. I was frustrated by Bernie's interactions with Jarvis. It was obvious from the moment he's introduced that he's a good rat Bernie does have a good reason to mistrust rats, but she never showed any real wrestling with the idea that maybe she was wrong about him. However, my opinion doesn't matter. This will be a hit with kids. Lots of action and interesting superhero gadgets. Recommend to Geronimo Stilton fans.

Thank you NetGalley and Disney publishing for giving me access to the ARC.

Ok I love the concept and the plot was pretty great. I need more Jarvis. Hes such a fun sweet character that I honestly wanted to fight Bernie every time she was mean to him. The only thing is I wish the author didn't make the characters the same age as the audience. I struggled to get pass that a 12 year old was recruited as a spy even in the world of Rescue Rangers. But that aside there are themes of accepting those different from you and working as a team. Definitely will read the next book.

unfortunately not very good. lacks the charm of rescue rangers, other spy/kid chapter books, or any other various mice-centric series. the mc’s are flat at best and unlikable at worst: bernie’s main character traits are being racist and having a dead brother, while jarvis’s were just…liking tabasco sauce and being good at computers. also i did laugh when they unceremoniously revealed his dead parents in the last two pages. only good points are being about mice and not shying away from death in a disney/kid’s book.

This is such a fun and engaging book for young readers! My boys loved it and couldn’t wait until our next read aloud day to see what happened next!

Bernie longs to be a member of the Mouse Watch, a secret organization founded by the legendary Gadget Hackwrench—you 90’s guys and gals will remember him from Rescue Rangers! Bernie is eventually granted membership and faces off with the R.A.T.S. Gang who is trying to take over the world.

Super exciting, super engaging, super fun!

Rough Start but Picked Up Momentum

The beginning was rough and I nearly put it aside permanently. Since I decided to review several 1st books in a series -- from several different styles -- in my blog, Drather B, I picked it up again. I'm glad I did. I think this is a great book for younger middle grade readers. This story is full of fun adventure, as well as lessons in friendship and not judging -- even when you have a reason too.

Thanks to Disney-Hyperion and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. I think kids are going to love this book. Either as a read-along with their teachers or alone.
