For months he's been sitting around on an alien planet, waiting for command to recall his scout team so they could rest and be re-outfitted. The team went through hell during their previous mission, losing both their commanding officer and their ship. For now, Jacob was acting CO of Scout Team Obsidian and their ship was a broken down old surplus combat shuttle they'd stolen from narco-smugglers on a planet called Niceen-3.
When command finally does reach out, however, it isn't to order Obsidian home for some much needed R&R. Instead, they are being reactivated and sent out into the contested space of the recently conquered Eshquarian Empire to track down a single Terran cruiser called the Eagle's Talon.
The Talon's captain has gone rogue and is operating within a fleet of ships bent on open rebellion against the quadrant's only remaining superpower. If that ship is discovered within the rebel fleet, Earth will bear the brunt of the ConFed's reprisal. Jacob's team is in a race against time to locate the missing ship and her rogue captain so that a Navy strike force can swoop in and reclaim her… or destroy her.
""This may not be what you think you want, but believe me, if you want to make a difference—really make a difference—you want to be in Scout Fleet," Mosler said."
Jacob Brown is the young man we follow as he is ‘railroaded” into an elite group of marines.
He’s on a steep learning curve but he showed his mettle in Marine, the first book in this series.
"He had faith that Jacob Brown would be every bit or better than Ezra Mosler…one day. In the present, however, he was still an overeager junior officer that was a little too confident of his own abilities after a successful mission that he managed with as much luck as skill. Having him go poking around for a group that had the balls to attack the ConFed's homeworld may be setting him and his team up for a bad fall, and in a game with stakes this high, that meant none would likely survive."
This is currently the second book in the series with more to come. There is nothing edifying about it. You won’t learn anything useful from it. It isn’t nearly the best written stuff in this genre but like french fried potatoes (chips), I can’t stop consuming them and certainly am not self-disciplined enough to stop after a single one.
""I'm already moving forces out in the direction of the Cridal ship sighting so they'll be ready to move when you lay eyes on the Talon. I'm putting an insane amount of trust in your judgement and ability to operate beyond the bounds of your experience and training, so don't screw me over, Lieutenant. If you feel like you're in over your head, pull the plug and bring it home…no recriminations.""
In Boneshaker, the fast pace continues and Brown leads his crew on a merry chase. There are new aliens, criminal elements and an over-arching threat to United Earth. Lt. Brown is learning by experience and making decisions that may come back to haunt both him and his crew.
"Yeah, we'll have to break the letter of the law here, but we're doing it for the right reasons." "That's dangerous thinking, Lieutenant," Sully spoke up. "That same excuse has been used by lots of people to do some pretty horrible shit throughout history. You're sure we're on the right side of this?" "I absolutely am,""
The ship that they have stolen is barely holding together.
""I'm sure I'll see you out there." "In that boneshaker you're flying? You'll either get there much later than I will or, more likely, not at all.""
There is enough new tech and science to keep things interesting:
"They were down in the engineering levels, and the type of powerplant used in Pinnacle Station—a series of fourteen water-cooled fusion reactors—spit out a lot of steam from the coolant line pressure relief valves. The reactors were nearly two hundred years old and not nearly as powerful as the antimatter reactors used in most starships, but they were simple, reliable machines that didn't explode when something went wrong. There was also the fact that they'd buried the powerplant deep within the station with new construction that would have to be cut away to replace them. When they finally needed to be retired, the station's controlling company would likely have a new system added on to the outside and seal off the old ones, entombing the reactors for the rest of Pinnacle's life."
At times Brown and/or some of his crew are put back in the game by their “neural implant” and the nanobots it controls.
"They came over and scanned Jacob's neural implant so it could tell them his species and pertinent medical information. Humans were now officially in the Master Species Database, so the staff on Pinnacle could effectively treat him, although most of what they did was pump him full of medical nanobots and slave them to his neural implant. With the wide availability of the miraculous little machines, this was the standard treatment for nearly every species and most afflictions."
The ending of this novel came on fast and furious and Dalzelle has already set up the next one:
""Damnit, Murph…if we turn this information over to NAVSOC, Jansen will be alerted to it within days," Jacob cut him off. "This is real. We're at war, even if our side doesn't acknowledge it. One World has infiltrated every level of government, and they've just wiped out two thirds of the active Scout Fleet units we have."
3.5* upgraded to 4 because of the addiction factor. (and yes, it can easily be read in a day)
Excellent second book in the series, eagerly awaiting the next one.
I enjoyed this second book very much, I almost forgot about the series because I had to wait a long time for this addition. I like the character of Jacob Brown very much I just wish he wasn’t such a bumbler and that he would get The situations right more often so he stopped walking into traps. In the omega four series his father does that enough. I don’t think we need another series with the same type of character. And with the addition of Luckys people it’s made the series much better. There’s plenty of action and humor and I found a book immeasurably enjoyable you will too, I guarantee it.
What a great spin off from the Omega team story line....In only two stories Joshua has created another independent character who can carry the interest of his own group of fans on a stand alone basis. Looking forward to the next edition along with the much anticipated next Omega Force story.
I love these new stories with Jacob Brown. I've got say the " LT " has it together so much more than Jason ever did. I understand that Jacob has had years to learn the control of his "upgrades" and for such a young man shows more maturity than the old man ever did! That being said Jason had such a learning curve and he always well almost always had his heart and mind in the right direction. But boy howdy when he finds out his ship is....well I don't want to give anything away. I will be waiting on tenor hooks for the next book. Jacob Brown and Jason Burke working together will be awesome!
This is just another great book by Dalzelle. Ever since I read the first Omega Force book he has been one of my 2 or 3 favorite authors. He tells a great story and I like how he is entwining Jacob and Jason’s stories. It’s getting really interesting now. My only problem is the length of time between books, but I have to admit it’s probably worth the wait.
I read book one back in January of 2019 and didn’t know this second book and I believe a third were already published. This is a good series and a spin-off of sorts from the “Omega Force” series which I also liked very well. In that series, Jason Burke is a human that has happened to acquire a very unique and fast gunship. He’s gotten together a very diverse crew that just happen to be good guy in a very bad galaxy. Jason also happens to be the father of our main character in this series, one Jacob Brown. Born on Earth after one of the infrequent visits by his father, Jacob had been raised by his Grandparents. He had felt that his father abandoned him, but considering that his father was the most wanted man not on Earth, Jacob didn’t want to be known as the son of Earths supposed traitor. So, he changed his last name to Brown.
Now Jacob is grown and out on his own. He intended to join the UE Navy, but was kind of coerced into becoming a Marine and working for Captain Marcus Webb. Captain Webb was a friend of Jason Burke’s and had promised Jason to keep an eye out for his Son. But, keeping an eye on Jacob didn’t actually mean he was supposed to be put in harm’s way. All that took place in the first book. Now Jacob and his Special Ops team is way out on their own awaiting call-back orders. They have lost their commander so the team is short-handed and should be in no-way lead by a young Lieutenant.
Still, as luck would have it, Jason’s team is the only operation team in the area of interest so they have drawn the straw to execute this one last mission. They are to try and find the location of a Victory-class heavy cruiser named the, “Eagle’s Talon”. It is commanded by Captain Edgars, who is now known as another traitor to Earth in that he has taken his ship and joined up with Margaret Jansen’s One World Faction. Jacob’s and his crew’s task is to locate the Eagle’s Talon and report that location back to HQ. The UEN will then send a fleet out to capture the ship, hopefully without much bloodshed or damage. Again, Jacob’s mission is to just report the location of the rouge cruiser.
Now, you and I both know that things are going to happen which cause Jacob’s mission to bloom into something quite more and different. That’s where the fun starts. Oh, it’s not without it’s dangers. The very ship his crew is operating from, the “Boneshaker” is about to fall apart and they’re not sure if they will make it from one planet to another. The Boneshaker is not known as a UEN intel ship so they can just about go any where without being spotted as spies. But, they eventually might need to commandeer another ship to complete their mission. That’s another interesting part of the book. Just where they get that ship and if there will be any repercussions from their act of thievery!
This is a real good story line and not too far fetched. It has some humor and some not so humorous parts. While Jacob is young and inexperienced, he does have some savvy enlisted personnel with him and a not much older pilot. Together they form a pretty potent team, but they do have their troubles. I look forward to the next book in the series.
The second book in the Terran scout fleet series. Jacob is on the trail of his adversaries, with a vendetta to settle. The story was ok... but the only thing that irked me was the fact that they are supposedly an elite team. The best of the best, the crème de la crème, the Rangers in space, Rangers Lead the Way, but they kept getting caught and tortured. Only for a third party to bail them out, and rescue them from their predicament. I mean if you want a bungling incompetent team of soldiers send “F Troop” in to investigate, at least get some comedic value out of it.
The mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find the Eagle's Talon, and then the cat-and-mouse chase begins, who can find the ship first? Who are the traitors in their midst? Thwarting their every move, in this cosmic game of chess.
I did enjoy the first book; I must admit but my enthusiasm is waning in this one. The story was so-so, it kept me entertained but only just, although I am starting to get tired of these types of stories, they're all basically the same, nothing new or original. Well, I don’t suppose you care how I feel, you just want to know if the book is worth reading or not. Well, if you’ve read book one, which is always a good place to start, then yes, reading it is worthwhile, if you like this type of thing.
Not a bad sequel to the first. Dalzelle feels for whatever reason that he needs to resort to cheap manipulations like having a team member beaten and tortured to death, etc. I would have very much liked if he didn't. Other than that, it's the same cast of shallow, unrelatable characters. Somehow funny, somewhat witty, nothing particularly to remark upon. Generally satisfying in feeling and pace. Jason Bourne, the MC of the series, has no notion he's in the military and should be operating within the established command structures, instead playing adventure. Something so painfully obvious that Dalzelle often needs to stop and explain. Now, I understand the first series in the universe (which I have not read at this point) was very much adventure. Maybe trying something different would have added variety?
Was excitedly amped when I got the notification that this book was released the other day and bought it without question this morning. Just finished reading it and am now mad at myself that I dont have the follow on to continue the story. Joshua Dalzelle, as usual, dosent disappoint with this new story. Showcasing Jacob's development as an officer and warrior, but also showing that he's not entirely superhuman, still falliable, and responsible for his actions (especially with regard to the many moral actions and decisions that are made throughout the story, which I also find extremely ironic as I'm currently enrolled in an Ethics course for my degree, so many of the concepts/theories are vividly on display). It's obvious that the parallels of this story will collide with those of Omega Force, hopefully within the next book, and I'm anxiously waiting for it to be written. Again, Joshua Dalzelle knocks it out of the park with this story and fans of the series overall will be quite thrilled with this one as I am. Thank you Josh for keeping the series alive, well and always entertaining!!
We continue to be given insight into the nature of how Jacob is learning via the method once used to teach swimming, namely just throwing the victim into deep water! However Jacob is learning on the job fairly well & quickly learning not to repeat the same mistakes anyway! We see a few cracks in the facade of his father he constructed although he has a long way to go before he will be ready (or willing) to see Jason Burke in a positive light. In the meantime the tiny crew tries to find ways to survive while at the same time complete their mission.
Josh! You're killing me! Now I need book 3 so I can Burke's reaction when Webb tells him what's up... that is going to be priceless! Anyway... I just found this series and I am a huge fan of Omega Force in general... looks like the series will, hopefully intertwine, with omega... I really can't wait for book 12 in omega or 3 in the scout series. Like father like son apparently... I laughed out loud in couple spots in book two so please.... keep it up and keep feeding our addictions to your books!
As usual, another great read by Dalzelle. Yet I hate to be left completely hanging from the main story of the ‘book.’ It’s even worse when the next installment is not even published yet. If author’s wish to publish this way they should at least have the decency to call them what they are - ‘CHAPTER’s,’ instead of ‘books.’ Unless a reader is young enough to guaranty longevity, or unable to find anything else of Dalzelle’s quality, I do not recommend ‘purchasing’ this book.
“Boneshaker: Terran Scout Book 2” Fleet Continues the “Omega Force” Series
The author’s ‘Omega Force” series, which went pretty much went flat towards the end(?), Continues through the MC’s son’s exploits in another series, “Terran Scout Fleet.”
The writing and storyline is adequate, though cartoonish villains & repetitive over usage of the same descriptions, with heavy dependence of filler from the previous series.
Kinda of lazy writing to be candid with no signs of an editor cleaning it up.
Good story about Jacob Brown and his team sent to look for a ship and it shipload of traitors but they ran into one problem after another, the worse being Elton Hollick who tortured and killed one of Jacob's team, just for the fun of it. I think they were taken captive 3 times and managed to get themselves out of the mess. When it ended they stole Jacob's dad's ship to go after Margaret Jensen.
No romance and the F-bomb was used 33 times.
As for the narration: Paul Heitsch does a fantastic job with the voices and the great emotions when he reads.
The plot kept me excited and interested the whole way through. Great character development. They tend to have some of the same problems as a lot of characters in repeating the same mistake. However, they seemed to be maturing in interesting ways by the time the book ended, and at least the same mistake happened in a new and compelling way. Really looking forward to the next book in the series.
I enjoyed reading part 2, and even though it feels like I’m encouraged to read Omega Force with all the references, I will wait for the 3rd book in this series to come out before considering that possibility. Book 2 was a step up from Book 1 in terms of writing and editing, and the title of the book clicks once you get just over halfway through. Good read, I do recommend.
This book continues the story in a dramatic way. The young lieutenant goes from a scared rookie to an all-in poker hand. He's playing with the big boys now and surprising to everyone who's met him he's the big boy. He's not afraid to take action. He wants to be a good commander and cares for his people. But he will step up and get the job done. First and last out Marine all the way.
I use ratings to decide which books I am going to buy, and I recently decided I am partially responsible for inflating the ratings on books. Either they were 5 star or 1 star. I decided to use the star rating more objectively as follows:
★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will). ★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this. ★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad. ★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time? ★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.
A little too much recapping of book, one deep into this book, which slowed the story down somewhat. It may develop a character by giving his history from another book, but seems to have been overdone for my taste. It wasn't needed to further the storyline in my opinion, but that could just be because I had recently read book one. otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters in the interaction between them.
I started reading omega force years ago and absolutely love it. I have been enjoying this spin off serious almost as much. It’s fun, action pact and real breathing characters. I have to say I was fan girl ing during the last two chapters as things began to over lap. Definitely recommend.
I love this series but this one isn't as good as the earlier books. This spin off might just be step too far. I know Joshua is probably just trying to breathe some new life into the series but this one seems a bit rushed in some ways and not so well planned out. Won't stop me reading the next one.
This was a book worth reading if you have read the author’s other books. It was interesting to see the difference in how the main character handles situations versus the main character of Omega Force. It makes the reader think “Is this how that main character would have been without the rest of Omega Force.”
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Omega series that I have read. The universe the Joshua has created is exciting and has a great deal of opportunity for stories to be told from. I appreciate the depth of detail that was entertained here, the immersion into the universe deeper than ever before. I eagerly await any and all of his future writings.
As a REALLY big fan of the Omega Force books i was exited for this story but it just didn't have the same level of action that the Omega Force stories have.
I will definitely keep going with future books in the series because they are being tied into the Omega Forces story lines but hope the action ramps up on future books.
This is the story of Jacob and Jason steering towards each other. A lot of intrigue, mind games, and the E4 mafia on the move. I swear there seems to be no adult supervision in the future. These books are fun, in the watching your neighbors kids paint their parents car kind of way.
As expected the second book slows down as it gets bogged down in politics and more world building. Our team is still on mission but heading farther off the reservation with each step.
The second half of the book picks back up and moves along fairly well. As far as the story I'll just say I bought the third book so good enough to continue.
The second Terran scout book builds on the first book, and the back story of Omega Force, and was a ball to read. Spies, Mercenaries, Traitors, Good Guys, and the take continues....will we see son and father reunited?
Seems like I waited so long for this book to be finished and released. Absolutely love everything thing about the Omega Force universe. I hope Josh continues to write about Jason and his exploits.
