DNF

Maybe people are not THAT good as we hope but they are for sure better than THAT: they don't start to kill each other and start to be dystopian survivors one day after a blackout.

+ my personal problems: I am tired to read about Russians being guilty in everything evil in this world - my mother's side is angry.

Sam is in Boston to bring his estranged daughter home because her mom is having surgery. He hasn't seen her in years and knows it's going to be tough, but what he didn't expect was for an attack to happen and the grid to go down. With little to no working vehicles, how is Sam going to travel a country gripped by fear.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this! I read a lot of PA fiction and it's hard to make a book stand out, but this author managed it. This book centers more on the characters journey than the PA event. I loved that it took a while for everyone to fully realise that yes, there has been an attack and yes, nothing will ever be the same again. Plus, even though Sam is a former Navy Seal, he isn't a prepper and isn't totally prepared for every eventuality! It just felt easier to believe. I also loved that Sam is able to act and do what ever's needed without overthinking things.

The characters were what I loved the most. We really get a sense of who they are. Sam is a tough, no nonsense guy. Sam's daughter, Anna, is angry with her dad but she also realises that he is the only way she will get home. Sam and Anna team up with some other characters, who were all well written and developed too, though not all of them were likable.... Lisa!! Gosh, she was so annoying and I felt for the others!! Lol. Also Annas' granfather!! I'm intrigued to know more about him but from what I saw, he is a controlling piece of ......!!

In all, this was a character driven post apocalyptic read, which I do enjoy!! It was fast paced and held my attention till the end. There were some cliche moments, like with the gang, but I kind of expect things like that from a PA book. When I finished it, I did want to jump into book 2 to see what happens so I do hope it comes to audio soon!

When I think of Kevin Pierce, I think of Post Apocalyptic fiction because it's what he excels in. He has read so many of the books like this that it's hard to come up with new things to say about him ;) Here he was clear and easy to listen to. He had plenty of tones and voices for the different characters and he even reads the female parts well. He is able to grab a person and immerse them in the world and is able to bring it to life.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Show me a good p/a thriller and I am there. This was good but with one caveat: the group here behaved just like other groups, but without the malicious intent. They went along stealing and helping themselves to things they needed when, at times they could have just asked. There's a vendetta here from a bad guy and that seemed very plot-device-y to me. The character development wasn't great, as it went by the wayside in favor of action scenes. The latter half of the journey is pretty abbreviated.

Overall this is somewhat entertaining, but I've read a lot more p/a fiction that's better. I'm curious as to whether the sequel will be an improvement.

As We Fall

I saw Book Two on apocalyptic Facebook page and thought this sounds interesting. Got both books. Enjoyed the story. Covered the first week of an EMP. It is nice reading a book that wasn't so over the top, it felt like it was real.

Enjoy the book.

Sam the former Navy SEAL discovers his ex is sick and wants him to reconnect with the daughter he abandoned when she was eight. He is in town near her University when the EMP hits and he steps in to rescue her and her friend along with new transport worker Mason who is trying to rescue his wife who works on campus. The plan is to trek west to deliver Anna safely back to her mother but of course with the world ending, danger lurks on the roads in the form of gangs who will kill on sight. Sam has to use all his skills to get them safely to their destination safely but with Anna's grandfather also plotting his downfall from afar, even getting there won't mean safety.

Again for me the characters were the issue. We had Anna's evil grandfather who successfully drove a wedge betweeen Sam and Helen because he didn't approve of Sam. He is like a James Bond bad guy who wants to rule the world, or at least his town, and wants to destroy Sam's chance at connecting with Anna. I found him so annoying and the vendetta overshadows the apocalypse elements as the book goes on. I just wanted him to let it go and forget his stupid vendetta! Mason was my favourite character but I hated his self obsessed, vain, social climbing bitchy wife who wants him to conform to what she thinks is the ideal husband and has to have the interests she wants him to have. She was such a pain! Anna's attitude to Sam annoyed me though at least I could understand why she had issues with him, with all the lies she was told about him. I found a few of the plot moments a bit OTT but again the decent parts of the plot were overshadowed by the annoying characters. It seems the author likes to have angst between his characters rather than them working well as a group but I personally find it frustrating.

I still have a stand-alone book and one more series by this author to tackle and I'm just hoping that the characters are better in both of them.

This is the second book I’ve read/listened to by this author. This one is an uncomplicated, entertaining listen.

Sam Wade is a Navy Seal. His job and his father-in-law were pivotal factors in his marriage ending. Now, his ex-wife is scheduled to undergo heart surgery and she’s asked Sam to go accompany their daughter from Boston back home. His ex-wife hopes the two of them will be able to connect on the travels back. Sam is unaware of how manipulative his father-in-law has been. The day he’s to pick up his daughter, the power grid goes down. Seeing her after so many years is not the only challenge they and their companions will face on their efforts to return to Boston.

This is the sixth book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Kevin Pierce ) and I’ve enjoyed everything of his I’ve listened to. He does this genre well. His voices are not extremely diverse, but all are individual enough to tell who is speaking.
His female voices are well done.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence. There is some swearing.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Family Ties and the Apocalypse

I enjoy this author and have read all of his books. This one has the power out, electronics, and all newer vehicles. The story centers around a divorced former Navy Seal determined to get his college daughter home to see her sick mother. Excellent well written characters and intriguing family dynamics. A wealthy Grandfather who destroyed the marriage and lied to his granddaughter about her father's attempts to contact her. After saving her life and fighting off people enjoying no law enforcement Anna begins to see her father in a new light, but the Grandfather who is used to getting his way will cause problems. The world is going crazy and as I only hope in the future book, Anna will realize her grandfather will do anything to get his way, I suspect even murder. Great story of the world falling apart and people still trying to stay in control. I love the main character Sam and will definitely read the next book, hoping wrongs with his daughter are put right!

It's hard enough trying to build a relationship between father and daughter where one doesn't exist, but throw in an apocalyptic event and things become even more challenging.

Sam makes for an interesting character he's he's incredibly likeable he's done amazing things with his life and has wrist his life to save others yet his lack of presence in his daughter's life is harder to accept. I want to like him and for the most part I do but sometimes his lack of understanding about why Anna is standoffish is frustrating and make him less likeable.

The book is well written it's got a good flow to it, the dialogue is natural. The characters are well developed and feel real, the descriptions and the world building capture attention without being overly descriptive.

The narrator did a good job with the character voices and the overall flow of the delivery pace of the book. I enjoyed listening to it and I look forward to book 2.

As We Fall is a post-apocalyptic, grid down story we have all encountered before. Father travels to Boston to bring his daughter home to an ailing wife/mother in Colorado. Cyberattack follows, grid down, journey home becomes much more dangerous and time consuming. A twist here and there to give the tale a flavor of its own; father and daughter bonding, and new friends made through adversity. Not a bad story line, but quite transparent. Narration by Kevin Pierce is the tales salvation for me. Three.point.five for a creditable series start. Not bad, but average

The story follows the normal lines. Main character is a SEAL, but pretty docile. Must people who have not served think Marines, Rangers, SEALs, etc are always looking for a fight. Not true. If they are definitely not wusses, but usually think the situation through and avoid fighting when possible. Bad things happen in fights. Not always to the bad guy. Next time you see a vet or active duty leo, thank them. They are why you can live and sleep safely. And for poor pay.

This was a decent story with some errors in the writing and some of the dialogue seemed a little off. It does portray a group that is not prepared and just trying to survive, which I think would be very common in this type of scenario. There is the common plot line of having angered a local bad guy who pursues them regardless of the cost. The grandfather, a very nefarious and manipulative person, has some potential for the next book.

A JH. SYFY. Novel (AAOB - 1)/A Cyber Attack by An Unknown Source

JH. has. penned a SYF Y Novel About a woman. Her daughter and her father against the Grandfather who had done everything in his power to keep them separated. The Cyber Attack has been made by an unknown source. The people who are making they're away across America searching for a way to survive. This is an excellent read for genre.....DEHS

Good book, enjoyed the story

Liked the book a lot. Didn't give it a full 5 stars because the author is apparently English and the book takes place in the USA. We don't say, "What are you going on about?" here. We say, "What are you talking about?" Little things like that jerk you out of the story and are bothersome. Other than that, excellent story. Author is very talented.

New take on PA fiction

A scarily current version of an apocalypse that could very conceivably happen today. Well written and well edited, and for an ebook on Amazon these days that's actual praise. But this story is engaging and I look forward to the next installment as well as checking out some of the author's other work.

Fairly fast paced action set during an attack to the nation.

The story flows well with only a few editing mistakes. The characters appear real and are not overly described as being unable to reach a decision, as is the case with other authors. It is a very good read and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Excellent Read

Well written story with great characters. Reading this book felt like it could actually happen. Power is out, phones, most cars aren't working chaos begins. Looking forward to the next book in this series. Will the group leave Colorado after just arriving or will they stay.

Really enjoyed it

I enjoyed it ,a good pace .I will read the next as this was only half a book .A bit
gung ho , with lots of stereotyping .Good guys ex soldiers , bad guys bikers or criminals or both .Women ,in this , bring out the protectiveness in the men , but otherwise are depicted as fairly useless .

Paced well.

Having read several in this genre recently I found As We Fall a nicely paced thriller. I enjoyed this easy read for the difference in the characters and the unusual way they become a group facing their travails together. Looking forward to more depth of relationships and action going into Book 2.

Good book and I am hard to please. No dirty stuff and not many bad words but it was a page turner and I am getting ready to read the second book. It is different from other apocalyptic books I have read and this is one, I might set ASIDE to re-read again. it kept my heart racing and also brought tears. GOOD BOOK I 0nly stop to review this and am on to the book two.

Not sure what I was expecting, but it was better than i thought it'd be. It was tough to listen to the treatment Sam got from his daughter and father-in-law, but it did well to build a character bond between him and reader. Another of those annoyingly short installments, but I'll likely see how the second in the series goes.

Not a bad read. Story is easy to follow .

I tend to read these types of books and found this initial book to be better than some but not as good as others. I intend to follow the series as it becomes available !

As We Fall Engages

This first book in this series is fast paced, has an excellent ensemble cast of characters and moves forward in a wick and realistic pace. I found the overall premise totally plausible while disconcerting and look forward to diving into book two! Good work Jack!

Enjoyable read

Jack Hunt's post-apocalyptic novel, As We Fall is a very action packed yarn of desperate people struggling to survive in the face of gangs of killers, looters and malcontents. There were times when I found the drama a bit much, but overall, enjoyed this tale.

Great

Well written, and believable. What would we do as normal law abiding Americans, if suddenly there was no longer law. Would good people suddenly become monsters? Or would the monsters, take over the land?

Good stuff

Somewhat typical for the genre. I enjoyed it. There were a few spots where I felt it was a stterch to suspend my disbelief. The end of this first book seemed a little rushed. There were also a couple of pleasant suprises.

Scary to think that this could happen

Interesting twist to the typical EMP story and probably a lot more likely to happen. Only wish author would not have brushed over the rest of the trip to Breckinridge.
