Nestled beneath the lush canopy of live oaks in the historic district of Savannah lies an antebellum home of exquisite architecture. Recently acquired at a public auction by Theresa for a remarkable value as her first home. But things take an unexpected turn when she learns she’s sharing her home with a snooty Edwardian ghost with a knack for sarcasm. Their often contentious interactions with one another will lead to strange experiences between the realm of the natural and supernatural.
J. S. Giles is an antiquarian who resides in the beautiful coastal city of Savannah, Georgia. His greatest challenge each day involves leaving the house-a task that requires putting on pants. He is the author of the first installment of The Sarcastic Ghost and The Empty House and Other Stories soon to be released in late fall of 2020.
Add one sarcastic, verbally abusive aristocratic ghost, a woman who does not blink an eye at the fact that she can see ghosts and have them banter for an entire book. Now add little to no plot, and an ending that's not an ending...
I could not wait for this book to be over. I like sarcasm, this was usually just nasty words thrown back and forth in-between endless discussions about everything and absolutely nothing. The author must be planning a sequel to this but I don't plan on going anywhere near it.
I do not recommend this one at all. I had such high hopes!
This is such a refreshing read! It revolves around a woman Theresa who finally happens to own her dream house. Too bad it is already occupied by a snide house ghost! The story develops as they start bonding with each other. Their witty banter was a delight to read. The plot is totally entertaining and fun. The author has an impeccable hold over vocabulary and that is evident from the first few pages itself. It brings a certain enigma to the flowy style of writing and the combination is solid. The narrative is humorous and keeps you engaged throughout. The characters were well developed and become close to your heart by the end. Definitely a book I’ll recommend everyone to pick it up this quarantine.
Theresa was having a normal evening when she meets a mysterious man looking from the street to her window. This man seemed odd, but little did she know that he was the previous owner of her house and he has a mission. Honestly, Archie is the best character ever. I fell in love with him right from the first pages. Let me just say I was torn between reading at a crazy pace and slowing down to savor each delicious word.
J. S. Giles wrote an amazing book full of mysterious and supernatural moments. However, like the title suggests you can expect many sarcastic conversations :) I recommend to every thriller and horror lover. I really enjoyed The Sarcastic Ghost and the final question is: do you think Archie will succeed in his mission?
This book is amazing. I don’t know if it’s because, open people intrigued me, but the character Theresa captured my attention, from the very beginning. I think she has the mouth and attitude of a voluptuous black-woman and the action of a fascinating white-character. Whilst, the ghost embodies Harvey Spectre of the series “Suits” (I later explained myself further). I thoroughly enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the characters, scenes, and sequencing of events without the author’s over-explanation. I also listened to parts of the book via audio and the detailed scenes made me feel present when my eyes closed. It was impossible to put down this book as I found humor in the relatable scenes and the actions of the presented characters. Theresa moves into a home that she doesn’t know is already occupied by a conceited ghost named Archibald. He takes her on a journey into his superficial realm becoming tight-knitted as they spend more time together and shared numerous experiences. Despite their continuous bantering and Archibald’s continuos satirical inputs on Theresa’s life-experiences, they warmed each other and became heartfelt friends. This book is definitely not a cliché. How often you read books about the formation of friendship where a ghost is involved? Keeping in mind that I am an avid reader, this book definitely expanded my vocabulary as my dictionary app finally got some usage. Despite the abrupt end and substantial usage of lexical words, this book was not only enjoyable but also relatable. Hence my verdict that this is a highly recommended read.
Oh wow... what can I say.... I really hope the author kept their day job. This book may just be the shallowest, most disjointed thing I've ever read. When I read fiction, I like to picture the characters and scenes in my mind.. with this book all the people were featureless stick figures, and the scenes just line drawings, no color, no depth. As the book progressed, I couldn't help feeling like the author had left the manuscript sitting in front of an open window without a paperweight to hold it down and a strong wind had come in to blow the thing all to pieces.. and I think they left a few chapters laying on the floor. I was left feeling like I'd been dropped into the story a chapter or two in.. no backstory as to how Theresa came to live in the haunted house.. not even a hint that it might be haunted.. and all of a sudden there's the ghost.. with no real reaction from her.. Various other things happen with in the story that should have had some kind of reaction or questions raised but nope, nothing there either. If you are thinking about reading this.. Just Don't. If I could have left negative stars that would have been my choice.
Giles has created for us a splendid world of darkly humorous and endearing characters. He craftily blends the supernatural and the natural, the modern and the traditional, the things that go bump in the night and the things that inexplicably draw us in. With multi-dimensional characters and a clearly known and loved setting, we as the reader cannot help but be pulled in to this charming, dark, and curious world.
This is not the usual ghost haunts a house and terrorizes the living. It is fun and humorous. Archibald has sarcastic humor. Theresa purchases the house of her dreams and wants him out. I l Iike their relationship. There are good twists in the plot, which never go anywhere. There are characters I thought were going to be intricate to the story but were not. These two reasons why I do not give it stars. I enjoyed this unusual story.
I have a signed ARC copy of this book. I really enjoyed this book with its blend of humor and suspense. Especially the interactions between Theresa and Archibald. Charlotte is a trip. I also like the details of places that can give you a good ideal of the scene.
I found this book to be total nonsense that is not worth reading in the slightest. I did not read huge chunks of it and the ending still made sense. Very tedious and boring.
Could be a Good story line. Very poor writing and editing. Story has too much unnecessary filler. Twist and turns that hit dead ends. A 6th grader could have done better
Aside from so many typos that makes it painful to read, the storyline has been done before & much better by others. The characters are two dimensional & the story doesn't even have any type of conclusion. I fought my way through it, & am sorry I did!
