And so is Beth’s cooking! It’s a good thing, too. After a lifetime of her family’s smothering embrace, a whole new world opens to her with the passing of her beloved grandmother.
Armed with an inheritance she never expected and orders on how to use it, Beth sets off for Merriweather Island and fulfillment of a lifetime of dreams.
Or so she hopes.
What she didn’t hope for was what most women would—a man who fills her thoughts at the most wonderfully unwelcome times. She doesn’t have time or space for a relationship, but how do you tell love to just go away?
Of course, starting over in a new place is never easy, especially as an outsider in a small community. Add to that a mayor who has her dander up and a woman bound to make her life miserable, is it any wonder that Beth begins to doubt God’s and Gram’s plans?
With her heart betraying her resolve and challenges to her faith, Beth finds it takes bravery she didn’t know she had to discover just how scrumptious independence can be.
This “Merriweather book” is the second in a new series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.
The Independence Island Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.
Melissa Wardwell resides in Owosso, Michigan with her husband and family. As the “nest” begins to empty, she finds more time to write, read, and enjoy life with her husband.
When she isn't penning works of fiction, she can be found hoping around her small town delivering groceries, volunteering with the local writers group, on the back of her husband’s motorcycle, or just relaxing with a good book that will be reviewed on her book blog, Back Porch Reads.
"I came down here to find my own way in life and instead I found my faith in humankind and in God while in your care."
This is such a sweet love story and it isn't just a romantic love story. Elizabeth "Beth" Stevens and her grandmother shared a very special bond and Elizabeth Merriweather-Lewis recognized a potential in Beth that her family had never seen. As she sets out to fulfill her late grandmother's last wishes, Beth learns that she can stand on her own and she gains a confidence that she has never known before. Leaving her very critical mother and moving to Merriweather Island offers Beth independence and the chance to create a new existence. It also allows her to reconnect with a friend from her past. Could this friendship turn into something more?
Scrumptious Independence has so many things that I enjoy in a story: great characters, a beautiful setting, family drama, mystery, and intrigue. There is also a sweet romance but I was especially touched by Beth and Gram's remembered conversations that are sprinkled throughout. Author Melissa Wardwell has beautifully captured the special love and wisdom that only grandparents can offer and I was reminded of the special bond that I enjoyed with my own grandmother.
If you enjoy contemporary romance with an inspiring message of hope and faith, you will certainly appreciate Scrumptious Independence, the second book in the Independence Island series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own opinions.
Love the stories that Melissa Wardwell writes! This one involves an unexpected inheritance, the possibility of love and with a mystery thrown in the mix, the story is exciting and heartfelt. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
Scrumptious Independence is more than it’s adorable title. Besides being a contemporary romance (the genre of my heart), Ms. Wardwell brings us a book that tackles identity, faith, trials of dating, AND a little bit of mystery and sabotage.
I loved the easy relationship between Beth and Scott and enjoyed watching it slowly develop into more. Scott is not only a great friend, but just an all around great guy. It’s so great when I can cheer for the hero from the get go and watch the heroine figure out what I knew from the beginning.
All in all, my trip to the Merriweather Islands was entertaining and fool of comforting cuisine. 🙂

Food and memories. It is a thing, a realistic pull to the past, to memories that surround the senses. Familial tugs of the heart. Don't we all have them. Beth's story leans heavily on her time with Gram in the kitchen. Yes, it brings tears and avoid in her life when Gram passes away, but the memories sustain her and allow Beth to pursue her love of cooking and baking. It made me think of my grandmother's chocolate sheet cake and divinity.
Yet, other memories of past failures or childhood traumas, scar us emotionally and mentally, maybe even spiritually. When is the time to let that part go and let God do His part? Beth has an opportunity to do just that.
I'm very committed to this series and all the authors participating. Anxiously awaiting the next installment.
An excellent story of second chances with plenty of mystery. I loved this book! I hope to read some others in this series. I received a copy of this book but all opinions are my own.
This story is so well written and filled with God’s love that I hated to see it end. I loved getting to know Beth and learn about her insecurity. Her family has not been very supportive of her over the years except one special person. Her Gram is like a breath of fresh air after a rain in the afternoon. She loves with her whole heart and has a been a big inspiration to Beth. It seems to be the norm in some families to bicker over inheritance. Beth is blessed with a precious gift from her Gram and I loved the adventure the author took her on. Arriving on the island, she sees her dream of a food truck become a reality. I have always been intrigued by food trucks. I would be the first one in line everyday as Beth opened for business. The mouth watering food described gave me a sense of comfort. You can feel Gram’s influence as Beth cooks up menus that satisfy your taste buds. It was so much fun to read about Scott and his past with Beth. I can remember my childhood boyfriend and how special he made me feel. Similar to Beth, my family was critical of me which left me doubting myself. Scott is a good person and finds himself starting to have those buried feelings for Beth again. One of the things I really liked about the story was how vulnerable the author made Beth. She unravels her fear of failing and slowly puts the pieces back together in an unforgettable story. I loved the mystery in the story and how it brings Beth to a place where she knows she needs to have a closer relationship with God. Greed and the love of money can make people do uncharacteristic things that cause pain to others. Beth and Scott face several obstacles as they start to share their feelings for each other. The story is a great example of God’s love and finding out how strong you are in the face of danger. The story helped me to discover peace about where I am in life. Beth is a great example of overcoming low self esteem and believing that dreams can come true when you trust God. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
And so is Beth’s cooking! It’s a good thing, too. After a lifetime of her family’s smothering embrace, a whole new world opens to her with the passing of her beloved grandmother.

The Independence Island Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.
My Thoughts: This is such a delightful story, a romance novel situated on an island, with a spin of mystery thrown in. The storyline has characters that the reader can really identify with. This is more than just a cozy romance novel; it is a well-written novel that tells us not to be afraid, that we do need to trust in the Lord. It is also about following your dreams, to never give up on them. Follow your heart and trust in the Lord. This is a book that the reader will not be able to put down. It's a fast read and an enjoyable one. Come to Merriweather Island, put up your feet, sit back and enjoy! You will not regret coming to visit.
This is a book in a series, but it stands alone and can be read without the others, but after reading this one, you will want to read the others.
“Gram always told me that family was a gift from God so that we would never feel alone in this world. If that is the case, I think God hates me.” Poor Beth Stevens, left wealthy by her beloved Gram’s passing, has been deeply marred by her family’s rejection over the years. Her grandmother was her one dependable light in her dark world. Having received the house on Merriweather Island, Beth moves south with plans for an island food truck. Scott Anderson, her childhood island friend, wants to help Beth heal and is also attracted to her. Beth feels so broken and the islanders seem to want her gone. Is a successful life on the island, let alone with Scott, really something Beth wants to pursue? Scrumptious Independence, #2 Merriweather Island by Melissa Wardwell is a fun contemporary fiction novel. I can’t imagine being as crippled as Beth is by her family’s failure to show love. However, I very much could relate to the need for independence at that age. Wardwell imbues her love of pirates and coastal scenery into the story adding nice touches. I enjoyed the relationships of the book. It was neat to see how friendships from childhood carried over into adulthood, in Scott’s case. Of course, one is always hoping Beth and Scott will be one of those childhood friendships developing into something more, but that is why you must read the book. Mallory is a good friend with a listening ear, who kindly holds Beth accountable to her faith. Overarching the whole possible island romance theme is Gram’s solid, Biblically-based wisdom. It comes seeping through both Beth’s and Scott’s memories at God-appointed times. Sage, gentle, yet straightforward, Gram is life’s buffer for both Scott and Beth. Gram is the person I most wanted to know on the island. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher, Celebrate Lit. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
I love this series! I find myself looking for the next one to come out. And then I devour it in one sitting and am ready for the next one again. Maybe I should try savoring them a bit more but I don’t know. They’re really good and I don’t think I could slow read them.
This book in the series follows Beth. Her parents are well off. But they have always been disappointed in Beth. She found comfort in her grandmother. It’s that grandmother that taught her to cook and showed her how to love it. That grandma also encouraged her to follow her dreams.
But when her grandmother dies Beth is left heartbroken and not sure who to trust. Everyone has broken her trust. She’s lost a man she was supposed to marry and she’s never been close to her sisters. Her mother doesn’t value anything that she does.
When she finds out that her grandmother left her quite a lot in her will including the cottage on the island that Beth always felt at home she begins to make plans. In her grandmother’s last letter she is encouraged to start out on her own and become her own person.
Beth starts a traveling food truck for the island and hilarity ensues. The mayor is out to get her. Her old love is back in her life. And she’s struggling to find out who she is and doesn’t want to lean on anyone.
I loved getting to know Beth. Mallory appears a few times and she is a character that is central to all of the series books and I have always enjoyed her.
Grandma just might have had romance in store for Beth as well!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Having read and enjoyed the first book in this collection, I picked up the next when it came out. While it is by a different author, it was fun to get to “see” the islands a little more, spend time with Mallory, and get to know some others. I liked the two main characters. Beth made me want to hug her and let her know she was loved by her Heavenly Father. And Scott was a gentleman and sweet. When any Christian aspects came up in the book they were well done, but at other times I was a little puzzled about why things weren’t mentioned. There were some kisses, but they weren’t really described.
One thing that really bugged me was the build up of the criminal activity. There was even a scene with the villains plotting to get rid of Beth. Then we have some police detectives from the mainland start to get involved in part of it. And I was expecting a confrontation, a caught-in-the-act event, or something. Instead I was simply told two of the bad guys had been arrested for one thing. How they got evidence of that thing I don’t know because one guy wasn’t even involved in it. The third person wasn’t even mentioned at all. I know the focus of the story was supposed to be Beth and Scott and their relationship, but if there’s going to be so much emphasis on the bad guys, I want it resolved with more than just a few lines! And I would have liked to know why Head Bad Guy wanted the land so much.
I really liked the characters in this story. There was Gram, who just died and wanted her granddaughter, Beth to have her independence. Gram was so full of wisdom and I really liked how her wisdom graced the pages of this story. Beth was a sweet character trying out her wings by moving from Michigan to South Carolina. She had an interesting relationship with her family. Her Gram left her a cottage on Merriweather Island and suggested she buy a food truck. How nice Gram and Beth got to share a joy of cooking and making new recipes. Scott, is an all around sweet guy who fell in love with Beth when they were kids and she would visit the island. He was the captain of the ferry that brought Beth to the island. I also liked the mysteries surrounding Beth living at the cottage and they kept me turning the pages. I am so excited that there is another book coming out next year in this series. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
Do you love comfort food? Then you’ll love this book. Beth is a great cook and is looking for healing and independence on Merriweather Island after a surprise comes her way.
Beth is having a spiritual crisis and needs healing from her family. Wardwell handles this really well and hope abounds. Scott is her perfect hero and you’ll see why when you read the book.
With characters who have depth, descriptions that are well done, and even some suspense, this book has something for everyone.
A clean, sweet beach read, if you like contemporary fiction then I recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
This book is so much fun. I really enjoyed it. The characters were fun and relatable. The family just enough to make the plot interesting without beginning over the top. My biggest complaint is just that things wrapped up with the bad guy. Everything was resolved off page? Really would have loved to see it. Otherwise this book is great. Can’t wait for more!
Beth is in her late 20's and is the black sheep of her family, or so she thinks. Her mother and sisters, pretentious and selfish women, look down on her and treat her shamefully; her only allies are her dad (who is stuck with an overbearing wife) and her grandmother. Gram is very wealthy who used her wealth to be a blessing to Beth who desperately needed the love that she had to offer. Gram kept Beth during several summers at her inherited family home on Merriweather Island off the coast of Georgia. (This is a fictitious island created especially for the Independence Islands series of which this is book #2.) While visiting with Gram, she soaked up Gram's love while they bonded while cooking together; thus, a talent for cooking comfort food with love was sparked and nurtured. Gram later paid for Beth to go to culinary school.
During this story, Beth moves to Merriweather Island to launch her food truck business and reconnects with Scott whom she met as a teenager while visiting Gram. This new venture was to serve as the start of new independence from her meddling mother; however, she didn't realize until the middle of the book that due to the circumstances of life she had also unconsciously become independent of God Whom she rediscovered that she needed. Being very insecure, she finds it difficult to open up and it takes time and patience to allow herself to establish a growing relationship with Scott. Scott is a protector at heart -- sometimes aggressively so -- and he has to learn to reign that in and be slow, patient, and gentle, especially with Beth. There is a subplot involving a criminally-minded mayor and a wanna-be alluring tart of a woman who is also interested in Scott.
This was a good book that serves as a good addition to the Independence Islands series. I enjoyed meeting Beth and Scott and look forward to watching her story unfold in future books.
It was great to be back in Merriweather Island and explore a little bit more of the island. It was great to see Mallory back in this story and I wish we would of had a mention of other characters in the first book but there wasn't. Although this series is written by multiple authors I don't feel like you have to read the first one. They could be easily be considered stand alones.
In this story we meet Beth who inherits everything from her grandmother rather unexpectedly. Beth comes from a family dynamic that is reserved and focuses on outward and superficial appearances rather than building true relationships. Her grandmother, who has passed, and father are the exception and they encourage her to leave, start her own life and fulfill her dreams.
Loved the romance aspect of the story. The trope of "rekindled romance" never gets old in my book! Scott is dreamy! He is gentle, understanding and protective of Beth. He has never forgotten her and has held a torch for her all this time!! (Insert heart eyes! 😍)
There are some less than lovable characters in the story that provide us with a mystery type vibe but I felt like it moved super fast and it wasn't completely developed. I think there could of been more to delve into this area of the story, especially how the villain was caught and identified. So that is my one negative about the story.
Overall I think Melissa Wardwell did a great job and I can't wait to pick up some more of her books! If you are looking for an easy read then definitely pick this one up!
(I received a copy of this book as part of the the Celebrate Lit Tour. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)
Scrumptious Independence is the second book in The Independence Island Series and what a great read this one is. Beth has lost the only person she can share her dreams with, her Gram. As she tries go follow her Gram’s wishes, she moves to the cottage on Merriweather Island. But is this the right move for her?
My heart went out to Beth for the way her mom and sisters treated her. They are definitely not my favorite characters, but yet they are important to give the book flavor! Beth was a Sweetheart, and though she had disappointments on the island, she also found her heart full of joy and happiness working with her food truck. And Scott in the mix was a nice added feature. I love Scott as well and the times he and Beth spent together were pure delight for me! I love the sweet memories they both have of Gram, such a beloved woman and was always full of advice.
Scrumptious Independence was very well written, a perfect beach story, and I love Merriweather Island and was happy to visit again in this book. My only thing was the ending, I wanted more details on the bad guys and details on what happened to them instead of just a brief mention of the happenings. Maybe this will come later in the series. Overall this is a great read and I highly recommend Scrumptious Independence to anyone looking for a good, light clean read. It can be a fast read, or you can read it a little slower like I did to better grasp everything the book offers. This one is a 5 star for me!
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Scrumptious Independence was a quick, fun book to read. The story flowed well, the characters held my interest and were relatable, although I never could figure out what Scott did for a living—he seemed to be all over the place in that regard.
I appreciated the fact that it’s a book about food, but the author didn’t try to sensualize the food aspect. Yes, I have crossed that path in my reading (a story for another day) and did not enjoy the experience. In this book though, I was glad to see that in her descriptions the author didn’t go beyond whetting my appetite for some of the foods she described.
I do appreciate a well-edited book and this one met my expectations. I did find a couple of teeny-tiny errors, but neither were anything that affected the flow of the story. The ratio of prose to dialogue was good too.
However… (isn’t there always a however?)… if I could take the book back to the editing stage and change one thing, it would be for the author to use contractions more often. The dialogue felt stilted at times because in almost every instance, the words were fully written out rather than contracted. I can understand the lean toward not doing that in a book (contractions are very informal), but we don’t talk that way nowadays. In my opinion, with this being a contemporary setting, the dialogue would feel more natural if it read the way we speak, or almost so. This was a niggling annoyance, but one I could overcome and something many readers might not even notice.
Overall, I enjoyed the read.
I requested a copy of this book to review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Families can be so complicated and hard to deal with. Beth's family, especially her mother and sisters are doozies. They only show more of their true colors after their grandmother passes away. The spirit of materialism is strong in that family and Beth's grandmother knew it. So she leaves most everything to Beth.
Now having a fortune and setting off to her grandmother's cottage on Merriweather Island, Beth is looking forward to starting a new life. Inheriting from her grandmother has made her dreams come true about owning a food truck. But unfortunately island life is not all it should be and Beth's life and future are threatened.
But the island holds some promises as well. Especially in the form of Scott a long ago friend and one she was falling for. After ten years, Scott and Beth may have a chance together again, if Beth can open up to him. I liked him, that he wasn't pushy, just very protective and very sensitive to Beth and what she was going through especially as her faith was being tested. Beth's journal entries were another way we were able to really connect with her and made the story that much deeper.
I enjoyed seeing the island life especially at Christmas time. The author does state in her notes that we get more of Scott and Beth's story next year, so I am looking forward to that. This story ends well, but I am glad it will continue.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Scrumptious Independence by Melissa Wardwell is a totally charming contemporary Christian novel. It is the second book in the Merriweather Island series but can be read as a stand-alone. The novel is about a search to belong and to be loved. The leading character feels rejected by her family. She projects this rejection on to her view of God, believing she will never be ‘good enough’ for Him. She has forgotten about the gift of grace. God says she is loved by Him. She needs to believe she is who God says she is. We also witness a journey through loss as a beloved Grandmother has died (before the novel began). A character feels adrift following this loss of unconditional love. Her anchor is gone. But she has another anchor to whom she can cling, and His name is Jesus. When loss consumes our life, we may take our eyes off God. “I put God on the back-burner.” God never wants us to journey through our pain alone. He longs to partner with us through life. God gives each one of us gifts. “I needed to use this gift for Him.” Our God given gifts need to be used for His glory. There is a wonderful, warm atmosphere throughout as the love radiates from the pages. The Grandmother may have gone to Glory but her presence in the form of a legacy of love remains. The characters were well drawn, realistic and likable. The leading lady was easy to empathise with. I absolutely adored Scrumptious Independence. It was such a beautiful read. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Scrumptious Independence by author Melissa Wardwell is Book 2 in the Independence Island Series. Each book in the series has been written by a different Author.
Beth has a wonderful relationship with her Grandmother, the only relative she has felt close to. Beth has been the "Black Sheep" of her family, and bonded through cooking and making Grandma's recipes growing up. Beth is very devastated when her Grandma dies, yet feeling blessed when she learns of her inheritance from Grandma. the Inheritance does come with some "rules", but Beth is ready to takethe leap and move to South Carolina to fulfill her Grandma's dreams for her. Beth really has a LOVE for cooking and Grandma has given her an inheritance of her Grandma's house and to be able to buy and run a Food Truck Business. Beth runs into a childhood friend, Scott, and the 2 pick up their friendshiplike it was just yesterday. Scott is starting to really fall for Beth. Will there be a LOVE Connection? Will Beth succeed in her letting go of her past hurts from family and be able to LOVE?
I truly enjoyed this book, it was a book that once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Many timesChristians feel abandoned by family, but turning to God brings us strength. Beth had to learn to "Let Goand Let God" during many parts of this story. I am looking forward to the other books in this series, as this book was just OUTSTANDING!
"Scrumptious Independence" is the 2nd book in the Independence Island series. It was fun to get a little of the history of the island and to meet Beth who makes appearances in all the other books with her food truck. I felt the book was well written. I liked the characters and their growth. I liked how Scott cared for Beth and looked out for her. I am excited to read the rest of the books in the series.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
Sometimes you just want a sweet romance to take you away from your current situation. Scrumptious Independence does just that. Melissa Wardell continues the Merriweather Island series of stories with book two. There is some character overlap but Scrumptious Independence can be read as a stand alone. Melissa Wardell has combined romance, mystery, and danger in this novella. Beth is reeling from the death of her beloved Gram. She has inherited most of Gram’s possessions and Gram left her instructions which she is following. Once she sells everything in the Michigan estate she moves to Gram’s cottage off the South Carolina coast. That’s where the mystery starts - the mayor wants her Gram’s property. The danger comes in when mysterious things start happening. On the ferry to the island Beth reconnects with Scott - a friend from when she visited the island as a child. They felt something for each other then. Is the connection still there? The story ends with some loose ends but readers are promised in the afterword that Beth’s story will continue in a future book in the Merriweather Island series. I can’t wait. While Scrumptious Independence is an adult story, it could find a place in a K-12 Christian school library. I think high schoolers and maybe some middle schoolers would enjoy this clean romance. I want to thank Celebrate Lit for the complimentary e-copy of Scrumptious Independence. This is my honest review.
What I think you should know: Scrumptious Independence by Melissa Wardlaw is the second book in the Independence Island series. This book follows Dual Power of Convenience and the introductory book Christmas on Breaker’s Point and features some of the same characters. While it could be read as a standalone I recommend reading the previous books and getting to know the islands and their quirky residents as they add an extra layer of enjoyment to the series. This book features Beth, who inherits her Gram’s cottage on Merriweather and brings a food truck to the islands.
What I thought about this book: This was such a fun read, with characters that are realistic and easy to relate to. Beth grew up visiting her grandparents every summer, making friends and memories that stuck with her. I love how she is willing to step away from her life and give herself a chance to grow. This was a good story of her growing and realizing her worth. I love the details that Wardlaw put into the story, talking about the foods and most of all the Bronco. Scott was the guy that girls dream of, a guy who even after years apart respects you and is willing to wait for you. I love how realistically their friendship grew. I couldn't get enough of this story and am really looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Scrumptious Independence by author Melissa Wardwell is a yummy serving of Contemporary Christian Romance fiction. This is Book 2 in the Independence Island Series. It can be read as a stand alone with no issues, but characters from Book 1 do make an appearance.
For me, this book checked off most of the boxes I have for looking for a good book. The main character, Beth, receives a surprise inheritance. Who does not secretly wish for that to happen to them? She loves to cook. Me, too! She moves to the island and becomes reacquainted with her old, good looking friend from vacationing there. I love good looking men (LOL)! Most importantly, spiritual and life lessons are sprinkled throughout this entire uplifting story.
Author Wardwell has a delightful writing style. I was immediately invested in the story. Beth and Scott were relatable, genuine, and lovable characters. Conversations were smooth, and one of my favorite parts. Her descriptions of the food made me want some. They were exceptionally well written.
This tale had mystery, danger, along with romance. The life lessons are timeless and ones most everyone has tackled. The romance is sweet and clean. I would recommend this to anyone. It gets a 5 out of 5 stars from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.
Melissa Wardwell created another delightful story with Scrumptious Independence, and even though it is book 2 in a series, it works well as a standalone.
Beth Andrews’ Gram surprised Beth and her family by willing her Merriweather home to Beth. Beth decides to leave Michigan and return to Merriweather Island. The remembrances of her sweet childhood with her Gram lure her back. She arrives with big plans, never expecting to run into her old friend, Scott, or jealous women or, even worse, the dangerous and mysterious things that happen to her.
Merriweather Island sounds like an idyllic and heavenly place to live. The way the islanders have ensured that the island won’t become a tourist trap is wonderful. The traveling food and book trucks sound delightful. And the weather. . .well, I would love it!!
I enjoyed the story very much. There was just the right amount of romance rounded out with treachery and intrigue. Gram was the perfect foil to Beth’s reserved personality. Scott was a sweetheart, and most of the residents of the Island were treasures. The cooking aspect was appealing, also, as food is a large part of social and familial interactions.
I can’t wait to read the other stories in the series!
I received Scrumptious Independence from Celebrate Lit. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.
Next in the independence Island series…Scrumptious Independence by Melissa Wardwell! I have been looking forward to this book for months. and boy was it worth the wait. I loved her balance of character interaction with the emotions and memories she invoked in me through her characters. It truly was a fun book to read that I had a hard time putting down.
I thought Melissa Wardwell did a great job engaging not just your eyes but your memories too! From her yummy sounding recipes (that may or may not have set off a cooking spree, much to my husband’s delight), to the hints of a mystery within, added with a dash of super sweet romance between Beth and Scott… I mean what more can I say? This book is a recipe for a good clean engaging read. Well done Melissa Wardwell, now I can’t wait to see what will happen on the Merriweather Islands next 😊
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars for the engaging storyline, the loveable characters, and for giving me a much-needed vacation.
*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback. The thoughts and opinions expressed within are my own.
First of all, the chicken salad recipe above looks and sounds amazing... It is a little different then I make it - but I may have to give it a shot. Second, I love this author. She always writes such fun books to read. This book hit home hard - I lost my grandma earlier this year. She was the one person that never got mad, never got upset and always believed in me. So while I was reading and learning about Beth and her Gram, it made me miss mine <3. My grandma, like Gram in this story was always so full of wisdom and pearls of knowledge. When Gram passes, she leaves Beth a nice and special gift. A cottage in Meriweather Island. Her dream is to have a food truck and use her love of cooking to produce an income. However, coming to the island, Beth has some healing to do - and people from her past resurface. This book is a great reminder of God's love for us - and how he makes us white as snow. I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit Blogging program, all thoughts are my own.
Book Two in the Merriweather Island series is a delightful novella. The island setting that feels like home, and seeing a sweet friend from Book One helped draw me in quickly. The novella entirely stands on its own, yet I am motivated to continue the series in order to learn even more of Beth & Scott's story.
It was a pleasure getting to know both Beth and Scott. Scott was still a servant of those in need after having grown up as a pastor's kid. Beth was trying to find herself after years of verbal abuse from her family. She had been a lot of fun as a teen, and that side of her was slowly coming back. My favorite character was Beth's gram, who had been diligent to mentor each of them as she taught them life skills, especially how to cook.
I was pleased with the character development and the plot, and recommend this book to readers of Christian fiction and romance.
I received an e-ARC of this book from the author, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
Although this book is not set around the 4th of July, I read this book in honor of Independence Day. When Melissa inherits some money, she decides to invest her long-awaited dream of running a food truck. She moves to her Grandma's former house and is surprised to discover that the locals are not as welcoming as she hoped. She does enjoy reconnecting with her childhood friend, Scott.
There is a bit of a mystery in this book. There is also romance. This book does not end with everything wrapped up. Instead the author connects this title to another book in a similar series, Heart Pressed. Both books are available on Kindle Unlimited.
Overall I did like this sweet romance. Faith somewhat played into the story, but I almost could have used more. The main character was a bit prickly. But I appreciated the stories of her Gram and did enjoy the food truck idea. While I almost wish this was a stand alone for my closure, I do like being able to read more about the characters. I will read the next one in the series. Final rating: 4.5
"Scrumptious Independence" by Melissa Wardwell is a fun Christian contemporary romance. It is book two in the series and can be a standalone but my thought is why, would a reader not what to read the whole thing to meet all the characters. It is also a book that deals with identity, faith, dating, mystery and sabotage. This book was fun, but it did make me a little sad because of the relationship of Beth and her grandmother reminded me of my relationship with my grandmother. I can't wait to read the rest of this series. The mystery leaves the reader wondering but it sounds like it will be explained more in a future book. The Merriweather Islands would be a great place to visit if they were real.
The meatloaf sandwiches with cheese sounded really good as did the rest of the food described in the book.
I received a complementary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
