Her brother's best friend might be a rake, but she's about to be his ruin...

Claire is the dutiful, proper Cleveland sister, and the only one who's not embroiled in a scandal. Until now. With her sister's marriage to an earl, the weight of responsibility to save her family has been lifted from her shoulders, and for the first time in her life Claire is free. A rebelliousness she's long denied has her acting out in ways she would never have imagined. Like chasing her brother through the dark streets of London... and kissing her brother's best friend and notorious rake, Lord Nicholas.

Nicholas thought he knew everything there was to know about his friend's proper and boring younger sister. Beautiful though she might be, Claire holds no allure for the worldly rogue. At least, not until he holds her in his arms. Could this passionate, daring, feisty woman be the same Claire Cleveland with the simpering smiles? Even more alarming, has the woman of his heart been right in front of his eyes this whole time? He may be late to realize that there is more to Claire than meets the eye, but now that he's seen her true nature, he'll do anything to keep her by his side. Even if that means marrying her.

Please Note: This book was formerly titled A Rake's Ruin.

Series: A Rake’s Ruin
Publication Date: 4/10/18

I first met Claire Cleveland in the Earl of Davenport (Wicked Earl’s series) and I just knew those still waters must run deep – and they surely do. This is Dallen’s second Regency novel and she’s coming along nicely in the genre. There were still some timeline issues, but other than that I think she pretty much nailed it. It is a sweet and very short read that is well written and well plotted. There is little if any conflict in this book and that is perfectly fine with me.

Claire was raised to be the savior of her family. She was the pretty one, the one who was going to marry well and save her family from financial ruin and give them a connection to the aristocracy. She is the one who got the pretty dresses, the latest hairstyles, and the most attention while her siblings got her hand-me-downs. You might think that would make her self-centered, arrogant and condescending, but it didn’t. What it made her was – numb. She shut down all feelings and desires to become the perfect simpering, biddable ton miss. Nothing ever rattled her at an event – she always acted with complete decorum – almost as if she felt nothing.

When Claire’s sister Anne married the Earl of Davenport, the family was saved. Now, Claire isn’t sure what her role is or even who she is. Anne keeps telling Claire that she is now free to marry when and where she wants or not marry at all, but the message hadn’t really sunk in – until the night of Anne’s first ball. Then, it suddenly hits her – she’s free and she is giddy with that realization. She can actually be something other than perfect – and she giggles and she smiles… She even considers saying something impolite. Then, she sees her brother Jed and heads toward him only to overhear him talking with his best friend about leaving the ball. She asks where he’s going, but he won’t tell her. The old Claire would have docilely stayed where she was a just worried about what he was going to do. However, the new and improved Claire had to know where he was going – so she does what any other young lady would do – she follows him, right to a gaming hell in a seedy part of London.

Lord Nicholas Galwin, the best friend of Jed, notices that a coach has followed them to the gaming hell. While Jed goes inside, Galwin goes to confront whoever followed them. Shock, amazement, and awe await him as the coach door opens and Claire steps out. What! Demure and biddable Claire has followed them, unaccompanied, to a gaming hell. He’d always sort of suspected that there was more to Claire than she let the world see, but the spitfire who greeted him was awesome. They had themselves quite a row and a mind-blowing kiss – and the story is off and running.

One thing that would have made it better for me would have been mending the rift between Jed and Galwin. They had been best friends since childhood and to leave them in a strained relationship just wasn’t right. It would have been an easy fix and the book had plenty of room to add that to the story. The perfect time would have been the afternoon before the wedding, just after she had spoken with her sisters.

This was a lovely read and I’ll definitely be looking forward to Georgie’s story.

If you read Earl of Davenport from the Wicked Earls' Club series, you already met Claire Cleveland. She is beautiful, proper, reserved and most importantly unquestionably legitimate - which is amazing considering her father's profligate ways. Claire was prepared to marry to save her family from ruin, but since her sister Anne married the Earl of Davenport, Claire no longer has to carry that burden, which is a relief, but also leaves her a bit adrift - she has been raised to marry well and believed that she would be sacrificed to save her family, but now she has choices and it is unsettling. Claire doesn't believe in love, she is happy for Anne, but doesn't expect it for herself.

While attending her sister Anne's first ball, she spies her brother Jed with Lord Nicholas Galwin and sees them slipping out. Claire is furious, he brother is the reason for their family's financial decline, his gambling debts almost ruined them and if not for Davenport, she would have been sold into marriage to save them. She thought her brother changed his ways, but seeing him leave with that rake Nicholas, she knows he is back to his old tricks. And in a moment of uncharacteristic impulsiveness , Claire follows them.

When she finds them at the back entrance of a gaming hell, she is livid and throws caution to the wind and exits her coach, where she is met by Nicholas. He tells her, it is not what it seems and she needs to leave before she is discovered and ruined. He takes her back to the ball and they sneak in through the gardens, it seems like they have successfully returned unnoticed, until a former suitor confronts them.

To save her from ruin, Nicholas offers for her, but they don't see eye to eye about how their future will unfold. Nicholas wants love and he believes he has found it with Claire, now all he has to do is make her believe that they can have a HEA. Simple, right?

I really enjoyed this story, I loved Nicholas and Claire, I thought the writing was great and the story stayed on point, the characters were great, the love scenes were on the warm side, the ending is sweet. There is not really any conflict in the book and there is a little bit of an "intsa-love" vibe, but the story is sweet and I would be happy to recommend the book and look forward to reading about the rest of the Cleveland siblings!

This follows on directly from The Earl Of Davenport, which featured Frederick and Ann , this is her sister Claire’s and Nicholas’s story .
Two young people , who’ve known each other most of their lives , both experts in the art of deception.
Her with a brilliant facade to cover her real feelings.
Him hiding behind flirtation and Seduction
Caught in a compromising situation that really wasn’t one at all .
She who’s family has always expected so much from their perfect daughter/sister.
He who’s family have never seen him as an honourable gentleman, just a dissolute Rake.
Will their love finally free them both ,whilst bringing them together?
Yes now your intrigued .
Read the book it’s awesome .
Maggie’s gift and talent with words are infused into every line, this story is seriously *sigh* worthy .

When a beyond reproach daughter finds out she does not have to save her family anymore by marriage, what do you think she does? Well Maggie Dallen leads us through a delightful story that shows what trouble Claire Cleveland can get up to! Claire was all set to marry for money but her sister Ann had just wed the Earl of Davenport. So she no longer needs to sacrifice herself for the good of the family. But that left Claire at loose ends. She was so use to being the calm, somewhat boring debutante to prevent any hint of scandal. Attending her sister Ann's first ball, she sees her brother and his friend Nicholas sneaking out. She follows them to a gaming hell and is apprehended by Nicholas before she can get into the building. Nicholas was shocked to see Claire because she was acting so unlike herself and he tried to get her back to the ball quickly. Will he act the rake and compromise Claire or be better than what everyone thinks of him? You will have to read to find out what happens next and you will really enjoy the story. I hope this author continues writing historical romances because she has captured my interest!

This was a fun and sweet story. Claire seems like the "perfect" sweet miss. She has been perfecting this role for years, trying to catch a rich husband to save her family. Nicholas has made himself a reputation as a rake because no one ever expected more of him. When Claire has a moment of recklessness, Nick sees a glimpse of the passionate woman beneath the façade. Smitten, he then has to convince her and himself that he can be the better man she deserves. Not an easy task when practically no one, including both their families, think he can.
I enjoyed this, Nick was fun to root for. He has all the recovering rake qualities that I love. I did want more out of Claire. While she had flashes of strength, she spent a lot of the book dithering. It just felt like the story was not long enough or her to come into her own. I was really hoping for a moment when the ton realizes she is not boring Claire (Nick's brother's words).
This was my first Maggie Dallen book and I will certainly be reading more.
The romance was sweet and tender. Steam level low.

A quick, easy romantic read.....

Actually fairly clean, but the best part of the book is how he has to convince her.

Which is sometimes a fun change, lol. He’s fallen, and it was great to see him work for it, plus I liked Claire.

Easy peasy historical if your in the mood.

I enjoyed reading A Rake’s Ruin by Maggie Dallen. She has done a wonderful job of bringing two people together for their HEA. I don’t want to spoil the book and tell what happens so you should just get the book. You will not be disappointed.

I have some likes and dislikes about this book. I don’t think a lot of readers will find this an issue but it did bother me. All the inner monologues. Especially all the inner monologues during a dialogue. The hero may ask the heroine a question, where we have to read a full page of her inner monologue before she responses. It’s just not my style. I like my reads to have more interactive conversations between the MC’s. But don’t let this stop you from reading this book, because the storyline was rather engaging.

I liked the hero, his POV’s were (for me) the best to read. He’s a rake who redeems himself and yes he actually redeems himself!! If he could erase all the nasty things he did in the past he would, all to come to good graces with the heroine. He regrets his past and does everything to be a better man and show her he isn’t the man who he used to be despite his reputation. One of the last scenes was heartbreaking. He was so in love and his past keeps haunting him. He swallows the mistakes he made and puts his destiny in the heroine’s hands. I could also feel the concerns of the heroine. With her parent’s marriage as the only example she has of love, it is believable that she has her doubts about marrying a rake. But I felt for this hero, I liked him. The author did a great job by redeeming him, IMO.

This is a safe read. Heroine was a virgin, hero a rake but despite this being mentioned no real details and no OW surrounding him.

A Rake’s Ruin is a cozy and romantic historical romance that I found to be a wonderfully written story. From the start I was hooked and was half finished before I knew it. I think my favorite character is Nicholas. He’s not your ordinary knight in shining armor, but he cares and is loyal to a fault. I found his relationship with Claire to be one that was 'syrupy' sweet and romantic. I was always on his side. Claire had it rough, but she also had some baggage and fears to overcome. I did get a little teary eyed at the end and that makes for a five star book in my opinion. Can’t recommend enough!

A Rake’s Ruin is the first in the Devilish Lords series.

Just when things are starting to go right for the Cleveland family, Claire observes he brother Jed being led astray once again by his nemesis. For the first time Claire realises that since her sister has married a wealthy earl, the onus no longer lies with her to save the family fortunes, and she therefore doesn’t have to pretend and longer. She wades in like a prize fighter to confront both Jed and Lord Nicholas only to find both of them disregarding her. Not to be deterred, Claire follows them to their destination, and what unfolds is every Regency miss’s fear. Before she knows it, Claire is engaged to Nicholas, but she doubts his motives and reasons for marriage. She is horrified to find that she is falling in love with the rake, not realising that he in fact has found the one woman who makes him want to become a better person. Nicholas also sees in Claire the hidden persona she has masked so cleverly for all the years, and he wants more of that woman. There was some adventure, plenty of humour and heartfelt romance and a true hero who brings out the best in the heroine - or is that the worst? I received a copy of this well written and clean romance as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

We meet Claire Cleveland again (she was in The Earl of Davenport”) and get to see her sisters Anne and Georgie in this story as well. Claire was raised to be the perfect debutante—prim, proper, simpering, and docile—but with no necessity to save her family from ruin, she lets her new freedom almost ruin her reputation. Lord Nicholas Galwin, a known rake and a close friend of Claire’s brother Jed, is shocked to see the “new” Claire and falls in love with that person in one night. In fact, he hopes he can win her heart. Claire and Nicholas are meant for each other, but his past and her parents’ marriage create roadblocks to their happiness. These are great characters, but I also love Anne, Georgie, and Nicholas’s brother Rhys. I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end and look forward to the next book in this new series. I received an advance reader copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

This is an amusing and entertaining story of love. Nicholas is stunned to find that the quiet, boring sister of his best friend is anything but. When she follows him to retrieve her brother, she loses her temper and completely fascinates him. Then he kisses her, and becomes besotted. Claire has always been the perfect lady, but now that she isn't under the gun to save the family, she realizes that she doesn't have to be perfect anymore. When she follows Nicholas and he turns out to not be the bad guy she thought he was, she relies on him to protect her reputation. Rumors start and he realizes that he wants to marry her, not just because it's right, but because he loves her. Only she doesn't believe in love, so her liking his kisses presents a huge problem. So while he's determined to win her, she's determined to have an agreement with him. He's very sweet and romantic while he's wooing her. It's a thoroughly enjoyable story that should be added to your TBR list.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

I read this long novella in an afternoon & was captivated by Galwin, oh when a rake falls he falls hard! There was no mystery or intrigue just a man wooing a woman & I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The author isn’t known for her Regency novels but this follows on from the Earl of Davenport in the Wicked Earls series & I look forward to Georgie’s story. I felt a couple of things were unresolved I wish Galwin & Jed had made friends again & that a certain rumour spreading baron had have had his comeuppance

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Ovviamente tutto raccontato in maniere estremamente prolissa, verbosa, monotona, ripetitiva ecc ecc.

Overall the story is very good. However, for readers that are looking for “clean and wholesome” reads (as listed on Amazon), this will push the line, but not fully cross it.

Again, great story and I love the character interaction, but a little too much spice for me.

This is a beautifully written clean HEA for all romance lovers. We first meet Claire in Earl of Davenport (The Wicked Earl ) series. She is the eldest sister of a family full of scandal who has been raised to be the perfect, prime and proper young lady with the responsibility to save the family. But deep inside is a wiid and passionate young women who only wants to be free. After her sister Ann marries the Earl of Davenport, she realises she can now be who she wants to be, but after a life time of keeping every thing inside she struggles with letting go. Along comes Galwin who sees Clarire for who she really is.
This book keeps you turning the page as Claire struggles with the changes she is feeling and the love that Galwin is offering. You could really feel the struggles and I enjoyed the way Ms Dallen wrote it. It really gets to the heart of how our past influences our futures.
We also meet Rhys, Galwins brother who needs someone to show him how he too can enjoy life and find love. I hope to see him in future books.

Claire had been trained to be the good, dutiful daughter that was free from scandal. Claire had been the one that was supposed to marry well and save the family. Now that her sister, Anne, had done that, Claire starts to feel that she has more freedom to do what she wants. When she follows her brother, Jed, and Lord Galwin to a gambling hall, she is afraid that Lord Galwin has lured her brother backing to gambling When Lord Galwin sees beyond Claire's facade to the passionate woman, he falls for her. Now all he has to do is convince Claire to be that woman. I received a copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This is a light, amusing, fun story. I enjoyed reading this book so much. I recommend this book.

The romance in this book made my heart swoon. I had to reread a couple parts because I liked them so much. If you love Regency romance, this is definitely the book for you. You will be drawn in by Lord Galwin, and the innocent, beautiful debutante Claire Cleveland.

The book immediately grabbed my attention when Claire ran off to stop her brother Jed from getting into trouble with gambling again. During this act, she runs into Lord Galwin and from there I was sent into a world of passion, love and uncertainty as that one night affects both Claire and Lord Galwin in different ways.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Regency Romance. It includes the setting of the genre with beautiful homes and the societal norms, with plenty of scandal and rebellion along with it.

Good overall but for me I need more conversations. It’s 95% internal monologue and it’s good for some parts but it’s got boring after a while. The first 8 chapters were on the same night within a couple of hours. This is the first story I’ve read from this author and maybe might read again. Duel POV.

Claire Cleveland had restrained her natural ways to be the perfect daughter for her family. She had decided on a marriage of convenience as she didn’t want to suffer from heartbreak. Lord Nicholas Galwin was a rake and the person Claire blamed for her brother’s gambling. However, a shared kiss gives her a glimpse of what could be but can she trust someone who will leave her heartbroken. This was an entertaining read with likeable characters. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. all thoughts and opinions are my own.

First book in new Devilish Lords series. Claire is the sister that Anne was trying to marry off in The Earl of Davenport (Wicked Earl's club). With her sister now married Claire no longer feels the family pressure to marry well to save her family from their brothers gambling debts. She also no longer feels she has to be the "perfect" lady. This revelation leads her to stand up to her brothers friend Lord Nicholas Galwin causing him to see her in a whole new light. I most enjoyed that part of the story. I liked how much time they spent together that night of the ball. I wasn't a fan of how much time they spent in their heads. I much prefer the time they spent together. I look forward to continuing this series. Sweet HEA.

Nicholas is a rake. Claire is a demure lady. But, due to circumstances, she doesn't have to be demure anymore.

Claire doesn't want to trust Nicholas, or even her own feelings, but it's useless to fight herself. Nicholas is more certain, and tries to do all he can to help Claire trust.

Their discussions are full of emotion, painful honesty, and passion. Claire's sisters are great, but I don't much like her brother, nor Nicholas' brother for that matter.

I love how a large part of the story is set at Ann, Claire's sister's, ball. It's an interesting way for the story to unfold over the course of an evening.

I received this book as an advanced review copy (ARC), so pleased I got to read it.

Enjoyable read.

I LOVED this book. It was so good and easy to read I finished it in one day. I fell in love with Claire and Galwin, as a matter of fact I fell in love with all the characters. I want to read about the other Cleveland Siblings. This was my first book I read by Maggie Dallen, but it will not be my last. She is now one of my top authors.
