Politicking fantasy, military epic, heart-wrenching tragedy. Stanley captures all the nuances of Riel and 19th century Canada in minute detail that somehow doesn't ruin an emotionally compelling narrative.

This was the most enjoyable Canadian political biography I've every read - for its careful scholarship, good style, and Riel's own amazing life.
