Saffron Bryant is an Australian author with a passion for fantasy and science fiction. She began writing at a very early age and hasn’t stopped since.
She has a degree in Biomedical Science (with honours) and recently completed a PhD in chemistry at the University of Sydney.
Unfortunately her cupboard didn’t open onto Narnia, she didn’t get a letter from Hogwarts, and a strange man in a blue box hasn’t shown up… (here’s hoping for an old Wizard on my 50th!!)
So she spends her time writing stories and releasing them to the world.
~Happy Reading!~
Saffron is best known for her science-fiction action adventure The Nova Chronicles, which she describes as "Tomb Raider in Space".
In this fictional future, women are finally free to be as angry, bitter, and grumpy as men. Improvement? ??? Kari is a sort of space-age Captain Ahab whose vintage starship spends lots of time between flights because nobody likes to be around her, but she finally recruits a crew including a robot whose artificial intelligence creates room for artificial stupidity, so he has PTSD and drinks too much coolant. Off to salvage valuables from a wrecked government starship, they lay the foundation for a whole series of further adventures. I laughed. So will you.
1.0 out of 5 stars Quit at 33% – Simplistic, Moronic Trash July 26, 2021
S.J. Bryant's 2019 novel [[ISBN:9781393505051 "Starship Renegades, Book 1: Uprising"]] is so bad that I couldn't force myself past the 33% point. Utterly one-dimensional characters, ridiculous "action," and absolutely no concept of physics just make the book unreadable. I'm rating it at an Unreadable 1 star out of 5 and won't be reading anything else by the author. Simplistic, moronic trash.
DNF at 31% It wasn't bad. Not at all. But for me, this felt like a character-driven story (which I love) – but with characters who weren't quite fleshed out enough to carry it. I'd like to read later work from the author.
I've been a loyal fan of this author for several years and have read all of her Nova chronicles. I readily admit I have a crush on Nova so, it's hard for me to change (fantasy) loves easily. Keri is the unofficial leader of a small band of Renegades with some unique skills. For various reasons, they were members of and may still support the Rebellion against the Imperium. Keri herself believes the Imperium took her younger sister when she was just ten years old and has likely killed her. Her rage over this has caused her to put a hard shell around her emotions and she tries to not let anyone get close to her. any additional loss may be more than she can handle. The action in this story is non-stop and if it weren't for the "MacGyver-, like" unconventional problem-solving skills of the newest member, they'd be unable to escape several impossible situations. While we've learned much about the skills of this group, we're just learning about them and what drives them. The Author has a free Novella called "Beginnings" that gives a bit of the back-story of two members of this group. She has made this available to her mailing list which is a great way to learn about her new novels early. It's not vital to appreciating this story but, I always like to learn as much as I can about new characters. We know this is the start of a new series and, while this first book finishes well, it's obvious there is much more to come. In fact, we've just learned that one long-held belief is not true.

The Rebellion is over and an uneasy peace keeps the number of unnecessary deaths down. Or so the Imperium would like everyone to believe.
Kari doesn't like it this way. Her life is fueled by a burning hatred for the Imperium and a certainty that she can single-handedly bring back the Resistance. When she and the crew of her ship, Ghost, plus a passenger/tinker who has his own agenda, race to salvage an Imperium ship that's been mysteriously scuttled in deep space, they get far more than they bargained for.
If this is any indication of where the "Starship Renegades" series is headed, it's going to be a great ride but you'd better strap in. There will be explosions (yay, Ryker!). Lots of explosions. Can't wait to read the next installment!
There have been many books that I have read as a boxed set that always seem to dawdle their way through that combine a few exciting moments with a whole lot of skirting around the story.....this isn't one of those books. As a first installment I would normally give a slow story a free pass. That's not where this is going. You actually can have the groundwork paid and a little excitement! I'm halfway through the second book and it's more of the same too, so if this is your bag.....by the end you'll be in for more of the same in book 2! Give it a go!
