This book is definitely something else, starting from how genre-defying it is: a mixture of fantasy, body horror, splatter, LGBT romance and adventure all rolled into a story that feels like a grand round of D&D.

Let's start by the two negatives:

1) This story oozes sex and while that isn't a problem in itself, sometimes it feels gratuitous. There are some situations in which the characters are intimate, and that's fine. But then you see people getting erections as a response to basically anything: violence, fear, potions, memories, a fire, someone smoking a pipe... And it feels a bit out there.
Nothing that I read in here scandalised me, but sometimes characters in this book get a stiffy that's so random, I thought "why?" a couple of times and I think it should be mentioned in a review.

2) The baddy is too bad, to the point it is a spoiler to himself. No matter the situation we find him in, we can predict somebody will die horribly (and probably give him an erection in the process) and always be on the money. He's a bit too bi-dimensional, if it makes sense.

The negatives out of the way, these are the reasons why I gave this book a glowing review:

1) It is a very original story and I prefer seeing a good original story than a flawless one with a formula I've seen millions of times.

2) It can get really bleak (in the best of ways.)

3) It's very daring, and it's nice to see an author never pulling punches.

4) It kept me guessing as to what would happen until the very end, rather than being one of those stories in which you are like "Yep, they're gonna shag. Yep, he's going to die." And so on.

5) It blends genres so well, I can only be happy about it.

Indie should be writing what you want and in this book the indie spirit is thriving.
