“GoodReads Win”

This is one naaaaaauuuuggghhhhhhttttttyyyyy book. Which I expect from Sylvia Day. I wasn’t so much surprised with the characters in the book, which all seem to be the same. The girl who doesn’t trust the gorgeous guy, the buff hot guy with the enormous.......”heart” who is so unattainable, but.... you have to love fiction! Nevertheless, this smutty little novella was a fun, heart racing read. It was naughty, I felt guilty and like a very bad girl reading it and then I wondered where are all these gorgeous guys with big ...”hearts?” Oh wait, reality sets in, I’m stuck in the house because of COVID-19 and I look out to see my neighbor just 4 years older than me And looks more like 10 year and looks and has the same shape as Larry the Cable Guy. No Nick’s in my reality. Why, why!!!!

👏🏼 good naughty read and a great escape from reality!

I don't know what happened here but it was rushed.

Sylvia's early writing was....interesting, but bad.

I can’t describe the excitement that I felt when I learned that Sylvia Day had released a new collection of short stories and novellas hot on the heels of releasing a new novel (which I’m still on the waiting list for at my local library). Since I could only find some of the individual novellas in my local library’s collection, I impulsively purchased the ebook from the retailer that alerted me to its existence. And then I did the research on Goodreads. I cannot describe my disappointment when I discovered that the “new” collection was actually a re-release of a 2015 collection. But I jumped it to the top of my reading queue anyway because I couldn’t go back to the gut-wrenching advance reader copy that I was in the midst of ( which was so well-written that I couldn’t handle the emotional roller coaster that it put me on).

The quality of the short stories and novellas in the Love Affairs collection is very uneven. In fact, the last three each begin with a letter from Sylvia stating that she had written the work about a decade ago and was tempted to bring it up to her present day standards. However, she recognized that doing so would mean a completely new story, so she decided to leave it as it was. Honestly, those three were some of the oddest stories in the collection.

The lead story, “Wish List,” was my favorite in the collection. It had dramatic tension, steamy scenes, and some character development. Some of the other stories, while super steamy, lacked any tension and were held together by a spiderweb of a plot. The shortest story in the collection, “Salacious Robinson,” was much closer to flash fiction than a short story; it was only two or three pages long, but very well done.

If you’re looking to read everything ever written by Sylvia Day, this collection would be well worth your time. Especially since it is a super quick read. However, I’d definitely recommend the No Safewords 2 collection ahead of this one. Because that collects recent works by different authors, each of whom puts their best foot forward, the collection overall is of much better quality and creativity. However, if you can’t handle the premise of The Marketplace world, you’d best stick with Sylvia Day.
