"Prepare, O King, as I have prepared myself for the end of the world."

Mythology has been a part of our country since time immemorial. Yet we know so little about the characters who star in them. Author Indrani Deb comes up with the psychological tales of such mythological characters in her book "Myth and the Mind".

The author pens down the tales with the belief that mythological heroes and heroines are psychological studies in themselves. "Myth and the Mind" is a collection of six short stories about very interesting personalities in Indian mythology: Sahadev, Damayanti, Gargi, Shakuni, Mandodari and Samba. Perhaps they aren't the famous mythical characters but they have great tales to tell and valuable lessons to impart to those who dare to learn their stories. And while reading their tales, somewhere deep down we all will discover a small part of ourselves in all of them.

Author Indrani Deb, who have grown up hearing mythological tales, has discerned human psychology being reiterated in various forms through the immortal characters and feel that modernist theories are only modifications of what the poets have already depicted in the mythical tales. The book is thus an attempt at reinterpreting the mythical characters in order to bring out their psychological depth.

The characters like Draupadi, Gargi and Damayati highlights the feminist theories. The tenets of Lord Krishna are far greater than the political treatise. The characters of Karna and Samba can open up the doors to Freudian psychoanalysis.

The characters that this book deals with have very interesting personalities. But still they often remain in darkness, playing as minor characters. The book is about such unsung warriors of Indian myths and what goes through their minds as they walk on the soil of a world that would never know their real worth.

The first tale is about Sahadev, the youngest Pandava, who had qualities lacking in any of his other better-known brothers. He had the power to see into the future but couldn't speak a word about it to anyone. He was the wisest, most courageous, best political strategist, most intelligent and more honest than any of his brothers. Yet he remained the unsung hero, and his great qualities remained unesteemed.

"His is the silence of deep knowledge, but a knowledge that must remain in his soul forever."

Damayanti was a lady of great strength and intelligence whose love and loyalty for her husband Nala reunited the couple. Her dedication and sharp wits can put the greatest Kings to shame. Yet, somehow she missed the glory and respect that she deserved for her remarkable qualities.

"My choice of King Nala is not meant as an insult to you, my lords, it is only an acceptable of my own limitations."

Gargi was the only lady amongst legendary sages who competed for the prize for the greatest stage in the subcontinent. She was a woman with a sharp mind and a sharp tongue, and had the ability to debate on the most complicated concepts and ideas. Even the great sage Yajnavalkya had showered praises upon her for the depth of her knowledge. Yet, she remained strangely unpopular.

"The truth remains, that it is not she who stands bright in the light of Yajnavalkya, but the other way round, throughout the ages."

No one knows that Shakuni, who is deemed to be the brain behind the Kurukshetra war, the evil advisor who seems to deserve only hatred, is just a product of circumstances. He is the tragic hero who was made and not born. He was not allowed to use his emotions, but only his brains. He was the tortured soul, doomed to grief and remorse even after death. Yet, no one ever bothered to showcase his side of the story and the struggles he had to bear for mere survival.

"The Chosen One, who had to fight against terrible odds merely to survive, and who survived only with the help of his wits right till the end."

Mandodari, Ravan's wife, is another unsung character whose kindness and strength remains hidden from the world. She was a woman of morals who loved her husband dearly and had tried every means to dissuade him from the path of evil. With her knowledge, intelligence and calm nature, she was the ideal queen a nation can ever ask for. Yet, the epic never sings of her glory.

"She was not a very superstitious woman. Rather, all her studies of the Vedas had taught her to believe in karma, not in fate."

Samba, Krishna's son, was actually his father's alter ego. But he was born with a curse upon his head, the curse to be the destroyer of his entire clan. He was marked as the black sheep of the Yadavas for his naughtiness. He had come into the world to complete the cycle of destruction fated by the Gods. But he didn't want his name to be known as a destroyer only. And so he underwent a difficult penance to the Sun God for twelve years. He then build the Konarka temple as the symbol of the beginning of a new era of re-creation. Yet mythology prefers to remember him as black spot on the Yadava clan and not as the initiator of a new tomorrow.

"It is not easy to be the son of a God."

All the characters are painted against the mythological tales we grew up hearing. Yet their is something different in their portrayal: something that tells us that this is not the way we imagined them; something that warms our heart towards them; something that makes us understand them, know them and connect with them in a better and more powerful way.

Author Indrani Deb took upon herself the difficult yet important responsibility to introduce the readers to the true identities and the great qualities that lay hidden in the unsung characters from the mythology. The mythical tales have showcased everything in them, but it is for us to retell them, discover their depths and highlight the lessons that lies hidden in them. The author in her book "Myth and the Mind" has done just that.

"Fate will take its own way."

This book was so so good! I was so engrossed in the stories that I completely ignored my surroundings and devoured this book in one sitting. From the concept to the execution, everything was o point. The writing style was simple yet mesmerising. The author has played with the story in such a way that it makes you nostalgic for all the times you’ve heard the stories before and makes you wonder because of all the facts you didn’t know about those stories. I remember thinking while reading the book how most of the things that I didn’t previously understand about those stories were making sense now. I would’ve wanted this book to be a little longer and have more stories but all good things come to an end. This book is really unique and deserves all the recognition & appreciation it can get! Recommended to readers who love mythology.

Ever wondered what really goes on in the minds of mythological characters? Indrani Deb’s Myth and the Mind: Psychological Tales of Mythological Characters gives us a rare glimpse into their inner worlds. Deb brings a fresh, psychological twist to Indian myths, uncovering the human emotions and struggles that lie beneath the surface of these legendary tales.

This book is a collection of six short stories, each centered on a character from Indian mythology who typically stays in the shadows. From Sahadev, the youngest Pandava, to Mandodari, Ravana’s wise and strong-willed wife, Deb reveals their untold stories. Instead of focusing on grand battles or divine miracles, these tales delve into personal conflicts and psychological depths, giving us a new appreciation for these characters.

Deb’s writing is engaging and easy to follow. She doesn’t overwhelm us with complicated language or heavy details. Instead, she uses clear, concise prose that brings each character’s story to life. The narrative voice is warm and empathetic, making it easy to connect with the characters and their journeys. Deb’s ability to blend thorough research with storytelling flair is particularly impressive.

The characters are the heart and soul of this book. Deb breathes new life into figures like Shakuni, often painted as a villain, by showing us his tragic backstory. Sahadev’s quiet wisdom and Damayanti’s fierce loyalty are portrayed with a depth that makes them relatable and real. These stories invite us to see these characters not just as mythological figures, but as individuals with their own struggles and strengths.

Each story in the book stands alone, but together they create a rich tapestry of Indian mythology. The pacing is smooth, with each tale unfolding at a natural rhythm. Deb skillfully builds intrigue and emotional resonance, keeping readers hooked from start to finish. The structure of the book allows us to dive deeply into each character’s world while maintaining a cohesive narrative.

The book explores themes of fate, resilience, and moral complexity. Deb shows us how these characters navigate their destinies, face ethical dilemmas, and confront personal demons. The feminist undertones in characters like Gargi and Damayanti highlight their intelligence and strength in a male-dominated world, offering powerful messages of empowerment and resilience.

Reading Myth and the Mind is an emotionally rich experience. The stories evoke empathy, admiration, and contemplation. Moments like Shakuni’s survival struggles and Mandodari’s unwavering loyalty are especially moving, leaving a lasting impact. Deb’s storytelling makes us care deeply about these characters and their fates.

One of the book’s biggest strengths is how it humanizes mythological characters. Deb’s meticulous research and vivid storytelling bring these figures to life, offering new dimensions to familiar tales. The book’s accessibility and depth make it appealing to both casual readers and those looking for deeper insights.

Some readers might find the writing style a bit simplistic at times. A more polished prose could enhance the overall reading experience. Additionally, those expecting a traditional retelling of myths might need to adjust their expectations to appreciate the book’s psychological focus.

I found Myth and the Mind incredibly engaging. As someone who loves mythology and psychology, I appreciated Deb’s fresh approach. The book’s focus on lesser-known characters and their struggles was particularly compelling. It’s a reminder of the enduring power of myths and their relevance to our lives today.

Overall, Myth and the Mind: Psychological Tales of Mythological Characters by Indrani Deb is a fascinating read that offers a unique perspective on Indian mythology. Its blend of psychological depth and narrative charm makes it a must-read for anyone interested in the human side of these timeless tales. Highly recommended!

Book Title: Myth and the Mind: Psychological Tales of Mythological Characters
Author: Indrani deb
Format:  Kinde

Book Title:
The title of the book ' Myth and the Mind: Psychological Tales of Mythological Characters ' is self-explanatory and evasive.

Book Cover:
The cover image of the book is simple with a chariot picture probably extracted from a war scene. The rustic look and title in red color give an authentic feel.

My review:
Since childhood, every kid in the Indian continent irrespective of the faith and belief system they are born into is introduced to two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. A lot many stories in those books are a part of the life of everyone. During this course, we come across many characters in these books and the elders in the family also take examples of certain important characters to establish their lifestyle. For example, Lord Rama from Ramayana is shown as an example of an obedient son and Karna from Mahabharatha as the best friend.

Taking in account of the psychological aspects with which these characters are depicted, here in this book named 'Myth and Mind', the author has picked up six characters and studied them in-depth along with the pre and post situations of these character's actions from the epics. Very less known characters are also well researched and explained. Kudos to the author for taking up this as this book may help students and people who like historical characters.

What I like:
1. A different take on the well-known characters in Mahabharata epic
2. The unsaid characteristics of the famous characters like Shakuni and Bheeshma aka Gargi  are well explained
3. A dimension at perceiving these characters is what the authors have presented with to her readers
4. The research on the characters that the author has done is commendable

What I didn't like:
There is nothing to dislike

Narration:
An engaging narration is observed in the book. Reading and understanding the character in depth in each of the six tales in the book is an interesting aspect.

Language & Grammar:
Simple and easy language with flawless vocabulary is found in the book.

My Final Verdict:
Unknown tales of very well known characters from history!

Myth and Mind brings to life the complex nature of the famous Hindu mythological figures and provides a fresh perspective on their actions, thereby delving deeper into the human psyche, exploring fears, desires, and struggles.

There are some lesser known but impactful stories from our epics here which not only help us to know more about the characters but also show us a totally different side of the coin. These stories and their exploration will make us ponder how different history would have been if written from the perspective of those who were labelled as villainous, weak, defeated or fallen instead of heroes, winners or victors.

The fascinating story of Krishna's son who went down into the annals of history as the clan destroyer, Sahadev, the youngest Pandava, who is often overshadowed by his more famous brothers, Shakuni, often portrayed as the villain in the Mahabharata, but when looked at his life's backstory, he turns up as a tragic hero instead and finally courageous and strong headed women Gargi and Manodari in male dominated society, all are the compelling and thought provoking stories author has explored to shed light on inner turmoil faced by this often overlooked character.

All these stories raise questions about the nature of good and evil and challenge the reader to examine their own preconceived notions.

Overall, Myth and Mind is a captivating collection of stories that brings these mythological characters to life in a way that is relatable and thought-provoking. Dr. Chitra Raghavan's writing is engaging, and her deep understanding of Indian mythology is evident throughout the book. It is a must-read for anyone interested in exploring the rich world of Indian mythology and understanding the complexities of the human mind.

read, it based on Sahadev, Damayanti, Gargi, Shakuni, Mandodari and Samba, we may read or hear these names somewhere but we fully didn’t know about their stories right.

Author portrayed each and every character as a potential source to give message to the readers. Most of the characters are portrayed villain like Shakuni in Mahabharata and all, each one of them have this unique character and also why they always think wrongly and decide to play with others, while reading this it’s kind of intriguing to read and their thoughts of mind, somewhere between them we may also connect our mindset with them.

Because humans also make mistakes at some point, it may be intentional or unintentional but some people learn from them right, so, we can also understand these characters through this type of thinking.

Shadev, we all know that, he is the last and younger brother of Pandavas, if you guys watched Mahabharata or watched the series, you might know that he has the power of see the future, but most of the time, he doesn’t know what to do and he doesn’t have the ability to make decisions based on them. He was just not confident about it.

Damyanti, I just heard the name, don’t know who it is, thanks to author to write a story about her.. I truly enjoyed while reading it. She is one of the determined person but slowly she ignore herself and do something that unwanted and all.

As well as, all these people Gargi, Shakuni, Mandodari and Samba, each one of these characters has the unique ability and qualities that are unknown and unpopular among the mythology. Such an amazing story to read it is.

The book is a collection of six short mythological stories. Every story is told with a different perspective, explaining the different scenarios. The characters that this book deals with have very interesting personalities. But still, they often remain in darkness, playing as minor characters. The book is about such unsung warriors of Indian myths.

My Favourite is Nala and Damyanti and Shakuni. Happy to be read. I can't stop myself without admiring the incredible endeavour of the author in research, and the exhibition in a book. The writing style was great. Stories were interesting and were narrated in detail. This book is really different from other mythological books available because rather than overpowering the well know characters from history, this book took the charge to pen down about those characters, about whom we have heard so much but have never learned so many things about them. The language used by the author is simple and easily understandable. A fast-paced book.

The cover and title are good. A good vocabulary is an added advantage. I know it's not easy to write mythology, but the author has done good research, which is absolutely appreciable.

Highly recommended to the readers who love to read and cherish the historic heroes of mythology.

Myth and the Mind : Psychological Tales of Mythological Characters by Indrani Deb is gives a fictious account of different characters from Indian mythologies.

The one thing that stands out as common in the book is that all characters written about in the book are have a very hazy role in the myths that we here, like we know that they were there but not much account on how and what they were like, what they were going through.

I really enjoyed reading about Mandodri, it gives a very clear account of things that Mandodri was going through during the battle of Ramayana.

I also loved the account where the story elucidates on Shakuni, how he was a man made out of his situations and not really born evil the way mythologies paint him to be.

I enjoyed the book but I feel that the writing could have been a bit better, a bit more polished, but otherwise it's just a great read which gives nice psychoanalysis of these characters.

The greatness of the epic characters unveiled.

A book which gave the deep insight and broad elucidation of individual characters of epic Mahabharata. Though these characters are well known, the greatness of them has not mentioned the way it has to be. Especially these characters which she portrayed here is not given much importance in the plays and the books as the theme doesn't permit to dissect the individual characterization of the plot. We can only get to know them completely by reading about them specifically. The author did a splendid job in bringing out the story behind these characters into limelight. I know about Shakuni mama but the story of mandodari, why she got married to a traitor 'vibhishana', the greatness of Sahadev, the gripping eternal love bond between Nal and Damayanti, I really got to know after reading this. Glad to be read. I can't stop myself without admiring the incredible endeavor of the author in research, and the exhibition in a book.
Highly recommended to the readers who love to read and cherish the historic heroes of our Indian ballad sagas.

History remains through ages

Myth and the Mind is a collection of six stories mainly revolving around the historical pillars like Mahabaratha and Ramayana. Though I have read and heard a lot about them, everytime I read such books I feel I had a lot to know about.

The book starts with the brilliant and intelluctual abilities of the last one among the pandavas that is none other than Sahadev. Amongst the glories of Bheem and Arjuna, I have never tried to learn about Sahadev. The same goes with the positive side of Shakuni and Ravana too. My favorite story is about Dhamayanthi and her love Nala. I didn't know about Krishna's son too.

The cover and title is good. Good vocabulary is an added advantage. I know its not easy to write mythology but itseems that the author has done a good research which is absolutely appreciable.

I would recommend this story to everyone who is interested in knowing about our history.

Myth and the Mind
Author- Indrani Deb
Review- Myth and Mind is a Mythological book with six short stories of our ancient culture. The narration is smooth and the writer has also maintained the grip and the reader is hooked to the book till the last page. As the name of the book suggests it is completely based on mythological stories but with a modern style of narrating it so it doesn't gets boring. Reading the entire Ramayana and Mahabharata would be really time consuming and having this book by your side a complete savior which is a quick read and highlights the important chapters with a modern presentation for the generation. The six short stories cover the most amazing concepts of ancient history which is still flowing through our plays, television shows and values. The title is good which goes hand in hand with the cover page.

Reading mythology is always a joyful task for me. Yes I love mythology and it is my favourite genre. There are lots of mythological stories related to culture, tradition, religion, and many earthy circles. Every story tells us about a inculcation. So thus indrani deb's book tells us. It is a bucket of six stories deals with some popular characters from Indian mythological literature. Here we read story of sahdev and shakuni from mahabharata, story of nala and damaynti, yagyvalky and gargi mandodari and samba. All stories are unique. For me all are like new. I never heard or read anyone of any these story before. I really like every story in the book.
..
Quality of a story also depends on the plot and writing style. Indrani deb perfect done both. Language is pleasing and easy going.
I think book cover should be more attractive and affective if designer will work more on the basis of stories contained in the book.
Overall it is a good book.
