This book surprised me- in a good way!
At around 9pm last night my heart/brain/whatever decided I was in the mood for a light read with a cute romance, preferably with high school shenanigans, and I somehow ended up on this book!
I don't usually read novellas or shorter books because I'd prefer to get lost in a book for hours, and I don't want insta-love but I also want there to be deeper feelings involved in the relationship. Fortunately, I didn't know that this was a novella going into it otherwise I probably wouldn't have read it- and now having read it I do see the merits of novellas and shorter stories.

With it being a novella, it always just cut straight to the action and any misunderstandings were resolved fairly quickly- and that was a relief.
I don't feel like there was any insta-love here (I wanted to fist pump when Anna mentioned having a crush rather than love, although Zach does mention it); Anna and Zach were able to bond with each over shared interests and get to know each other as they spent more time together. Zach was attracted to how curious Anna was- how she loved learning about new things- while Anna was interested in learning about Zach, as she came to find there was more to him than his devil-may-care attitude. I mean, their attraction/interest makes sense, right? You don't always get that from romances lol

Overall, there was nothing too special about this book and its plot but it was such a cute read, and exactly what I was looking for at the time :)

SOOO CUTE!!!

This was a fun, quick read that hit a lot of cliche tropes, but did it well. If you enjoyed The Code for Love and Heartbreak, then this is definitely one to check out!

I really like the two main characters in this story, Zach and Anna. They complimented each other and made this story interesting. I love cliche tropes and storylines and this was certainly one of the better stories with them.

I thought Zach was going to be the stereotypical bad-turned-good, but he was actually someone else. He had similar characteristics of the motorcycle-riding, tattoo-covered bad boy, but with more pizazz. I loved getting to read part of the book from his POV because I learned he was funny, and kind, and had made some past mistakes that he wanted to correct. He wasn't angry and brooding as is so often portrayed in similar characters, but he was fun and encouraging and lovable.

Anna had the stereotypical role of being the geek, but what made her a little different was her willingness to look outside the box. She was open-minded and wanted to learn more about Zach and his interests. She wasn't just completely focused on schoolwork and the assignment her and Zach needed to work on.

Also, I didn't know at the beginning that this was somewhat of a short story. But, I still felt like it had pretty good pacing. There was still conflict and change and all the other things that make a good story. I'll be reading the other books in this series for sure!

Funny, adorkable, sweet, and swoon-worthy!

“Hey, Anna?”
She looked up. “Yes?”
“Did you study up before you came here today?”
She nodded. “I did.”
I stared at her for a long moment, not sure whether to laugh or hug her. I mean… She’d studied.
She’d studied cars.
For a fake date.

I adored Anna and all her insecurites and foibles, and the above exchange kind of illustrates the kind of person she is quite beautifully. Zach is a great guy hiding behind his slacker image, and while he may not be perfect, he's perfect for Anna.
I enjoyed those two getting to know - and challenge - each other, but I especially appreciated their honesty towards each other and their willingness to meet the other halfway.

This new series of novellas is off to a great start, and I can't wait to read the other two stories!

5/5 adorkable stars :)

A super generic but cute romance about two teenagers that are not supposed to like each other.

There is an app that can predict your best matchup, and Zach and Anna are not the best options for each other, because they are kinda opposites. To prove in their psychology class that the app can be manipulated, their classmates ask them to fake that they are dating so the app can predict that they are actually a match.

Really enjoyed the idea of the book! But for me I needed more, the book it's too simple and short. There were some times, that I felt that the story wasn't fluid and it was just explaining what is happening and not what are they feeling. If the author explored more feelings it would be a great book!

I expected a short sweet and squeal worthy novel.

I am sorry to say that I was honestly quite dissapointed. This insta love was very shallow, I mean EXTREMELY shallow and that is something since I usually am a sucker of sweet insta love, however this wasn't exactly sweet all the way through.

(4.5 stars) - Fun new series premise!

Six high school juniors have to do a psychology class project that proves or disproves whether or not love can be quantified. They decide to test a popular dating app (from Dallen's "Tall Dark & Nerdy", which is not necessary to read for this, but is a fun read in its own right!)

Each of the 3 couples gets their own novella to tell their story, with the final one pulling it all together & wrapping it up.

Anna & Zach are up first with a definite opposites attract set up. It sure seems like they couldn't possibly be a match, but they each discover hidden facets to the other that they find increasingly intriguing.

There's one conflict that comes up that I think is overused by authors, which kept me from giving a perfect score, but it's a minor bump in an otherwise excellent story.

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic
*Language: 1 d-mn, a couple of uses of h-ll & d--k

This was a nice clean example of a teen novel. It is G rated so nothing inappropriate. It’s very sweet. I loved how the author brought you in and captured your attention from the very beginning. Anna and Zach were good well thought out characters. I would definitely recommend this to any Teen or anyone who loves a good clean little romance.

Now, with that being said unfortunately this was not the best teen novel that I have ever read and for me I felt like Its was missing that spark that a five star read has. I think what I needed for this to be a five star read was just a little more storyline, depth, and character development overtime. I would give this a 4.6

Me encantó...

Este sí me gustó, la trama, a pesar de ser un tema muy cliché (de fingir un romance), me encantó.... a demás los personajes principales fueron super encantadores y eso, a mi parecer, fue lo mejor del libro....

I read this series because I was in the mood for a sweet YA story for a change. That is what I got but was a little disappointed but the shallow conforming nature of the these books. On the surface they were “clean” sweet stories. But if you look under you see the same overused pattern that is plaguing new adult novels right now. I hate to say it but I really expected more from this author. All three stories feature the innocent young girl who has yet to receive her first kiss. Two of them were basically saving themselves for the “hero”. These guys of course were out dating around being the PG versions of slutty. When you remove the top you see that all three stories are tame versions of the “manwhore and the virgin” storyline I can’t seem to get away from. Even though two of the guys realize they have been In love with their heroine for a long time, none were sitting home pining or just not out being with other girls. That the girls place right? It’s really disappointing to see this author perpetuating the stereotype. It would have been nice if at least one of the guys had some loyalty, and the girls got to have his first as well...

Clichés por doquier (chico malo/chica buena), instalove, y escritura muy meh (he visto fanfics mejor escritos que esto). Culpa mía que no me di cuenta de que tiene poco más de 100 páginas y así imposible desarrollar una historia en condiciones.

Adorable, opposites-attract, YA, G-rated, romantic comedy

Introverted, scholarly Anna has never dated because she is a very serious student who is on track to become valedictorian next year. She refuses to get less than an A in any of her classes, including psychology.

Her fellow junior, Zach, is someone Anna has seen around her school for years, but she knows nothing about him personally other than his reputation as a slacker. In reality, however, though Zach may not be college bound, he's a hard-working guy with ambitious plans for his future, and he can't afford to fail his psychology class.

The problem is, their psychology teacher has assigned the class with a ridiculous group project. And the embarrassing portion of responsibility relegated to Anna and Zach is to pretend to be dating each other convincingly enough that they can fool an enormously popular dating app into believing they are in love.

I hugely enjoy excellent romantic comedy, and this terrific YA romance is extremely well done. I'm a big fan of Maggie Dallen's YA novels in general, and this is one of the very best that this very talented author has ever written.

Let me list some of the many things I loved about this book:

It has a fabulous opening that really pulls you into the story as we first encounter these two highly sympathetic romantic protagonists as they are pitchforked into their quirky, hilarious, fake-dating assignment

I very much liked the fact that, though they seem like extreme opposites on the surface, underneath, both Anna and Zach, each in their own way, is an alienated loner. This internal similarity leads to one of my all-time favorite romance tropes: You and me against the world--no one truly understood me until you.

It is a difficult feat for an author of romantic comedy to write a story that is both poignant and absolutely hilarious, but that is exactly what this wonderful book offers. Without violating the comedic tone of the book by getting dragged down into melodrama, the author skillfully reveals significant, sad issues in the backgrounds of both Anna and Zach, which greatly enriches their characterization. And the humor in this story is the most entertaining kind, for my personal taste. The author avoids slapstick entirely, which I call humiliation humor, and instead offers a great deal of witty repartee between Anna and Zach.

This story offers a sweetly innocent version of what is known as a "slow-burn" romance. Over the course of this novel, while they are fake dating, Anna and Zach progress from strangers with generally negative opinions about each other, to friendly acquaintances, to good friends, to romance.

Every character in this book is absolutely distinct, each with their own uniquely fascinating voice. Far more authors than one might imagine have a difficult time avoiding making all of their characters sound alike.

This book is a classic romance offering a guaranteed HEA and the dual point of view of both the heroine and the hero. The latter allows us to deeply get to know Zach, who is an admirable guy, well worth knowing.

There is no romantic triangle and no cheating!

The hero is not promiscuous!

This book is completely G-rated, and suitable for all ages. There is no underage drinking, no cussing, and no more than mild kissing. But even without the sex that occurs in so many YA novels these days, there is plenty of compelling chemistry between these two vibrant, attractive protagonists.

I very much look forward to the other two books in this trilogy. It looks as though there will be three different romance novels, the other two books starring two other couples from the same psychology class.

I rate this book as follows:

Heroine: 5 stars
Hero: 5 stars
Subcharacters: 5 stars
Romance plot: 5 stars
Writing: 5 stars
Overall: 5 stars

I just can't. I had to stop halfway (not that 5/10 chapters is that much anyway), because.... well I can't even describe it.
- Anna describes herself as someone who hasn't yet gone though puberty, which 1) is just a weird phrasing 2) the actual truth or 3) is the fault of the authors weird writing style. All of this would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that the main love interest Zack has had sex multiple times with the local mean girl, which separately would also be fine.... but these 2 facts together just don't mix AT ALL. Maybe it's just me, but I find this kinda disturbing.
- Due to the book basically having no chapters the story moved at a breakneck speed. In 4 chapters they went on 2 dates and they basically were in love as soon as they realized they liked the same author on their first date-not-actually-a-date.
- As mentioned above, the story moves so fast there is no need to read past chapter 3. Was this an experiment on how fast the author could finish the book?
- In the short time that I knew Zack he actually seemed like an interesting character. The whole premise of the book was not bad, it just suffered greatly due to the writing style and lack of chapters.
- Anna on the other hand was way too jumpy. Again, I feel like if this was explained in the story and if she had anxiety issues and we saw how it affected her in different aspects of her life it would be more or less fine, but now it just seems for the sake of a trope.
-The story moved from let's say Anna sitting in library to Anna suddenly appearing at a parking lot the next evening (I'm assuming?). No transition, no nothing. This girl can teleport! Not to beat a dead horse, but come on.... you can't follow along half the time what is happening, because the book changes locations that much.

That's it. No clue what else to say apart form repeating myself about how the story makes no sense due to the lack of chapters.

Anna and Zach find they have something in common and that there maybe there was more to the other than meets the eye (Loner Nerd, School Bad Boy, total opposites) whilst spending time together for their psych class group project to disprove a dating app premise.

This book has some great inner thoughts like this
"I couldn’t tell if he was kidding. It kind of sounded like he was teasing…? But then again, his tone never wavered from that low I-Am-Batman register so it was really hard to read." in Chapter 3.

Anna and Zach remind me of Charlotte and West from First Kiss with the Quarterback with Zach's patience with Anna allowing her time to process and Zach being intrigued by Anna and getting her to smile after their first library date, while Anna studied up on cars before her street race date with Zach.

OMG this was really, really cute! I loved it! I loved Zach (well, not from the beginning, but just as their first meeting in the library ended, I was already halfway crushing on him). He was really sweet, and so damn hot. Zach and Anna had such good chemistry. I loved their dates. And loved their kisses. And that scene when Zach went at her house unannounced to talk with Anna? That damn reminded me of Johnny in Dirty Dancing. And I wasn't the only one thinking that! Anna did too. For real, the only thing missing was Zach saying to her dad that Anna doesn't belong in a corner. Lol.
I had a really good time reading this. It was short (but not too short), sweet, and there's some really intense kissing. A really shy heroine, and a really hot and sweet Hero.

Absolutely love Maggie Dallens sweet short read. Anna and her class are grouped together to prove whether or not the Love Quiz app really can find love or not. Anna and Zack are paired together as complete opposites to try and fool the app but the more time they spend together the more they learn there is more to the other. Will there “relationship” ship go from fake to real. Anna and Zach are too cute together. Adorable sweet read with an HEA.

Tall, Dark and Nerdy features how the Love Quiz app came to be. You don’t have to read it to get the story but it’s a great read too!

Voluntarily read and reviewed an arc of this book.

-‘“Our date?” he said. I blinked. Um…what? Oh right.
“Yes, our date,” I said, saying the stupid word with all the maturity I could muster. Dates. No big whoop. People dated all the time. I’d never had a real date, but that didn’t make this a big deal or anything. Nope. Because this wasn’t real. It was only for a grade.’-

Anna is socially awkward, mature and intelligent beyond her years. Zach has tattoos, cares more about cars than school, and has a reputation as a “bad boy”. The two of them are polar opposites so they are ideal candidates for an assignment proving that dating apps can be manipulated and are unreliable. Aren’t they?

I love all of Maggie Dallen’s books, but especially those that star a high school nerd girl. It’s ‘cause this author gets into the thoughts and feelings of nerd girls so perfectly. How do I know this? Because I was one. At l sat as much as Anna in this book, so I can totally identify with her (though I did run so that’s one minor difference). How she finds true love with apparent slacker but in reality literature reading car crazy mechanic to be Zach? Perfection. Real feelings. Great story telling. Perfect plot. Fantastic lead and supporting characters. Can’t really ask for much more. Highly (very highly) recommended.

Short and Intense. This is a quick read at just over 100 pages, solid "fake dating" HS romance set in the world of Tall, Dark, and Nerdy and spinning off a new short trilogy where a group of kids try to prove the Love Quiz app is bogus. Here, we get the setup and the first couple - the couple that the app should never match, but that the experiment tries to force the app to match. Short and fun in a Hallmark Movie kind of way, this is an excellent quick distraction from the "real" world. Very much recommended.

Very sweet!

I think the best word I could use to describe this book is precious. Zach and Anna are just too cute. Zach is an intimidating school "slacker" while Anna is an awkward nerd. Both are somewhat outcasts--Anna to a greater degree. They are seemingly opposites but find that they have more in common than they think and are actually well-suited to each other. The characterization is great. For a novella, there is good depth and feeling and difficult conflict, while still being sweet and happy. I very much enjoyed this! Highly recommend to people who enjoy this genre.

Just blah

Not a great book. Nothing particularly bad about it, just over all not very good. There was no character development, and the characters just sort of went from not liking each other to liking each other without any real emotional development. Everybody was a bit melodramatic over basically nothing happening. Everything was stiff and nothing felt natural. My favorite part was the female lead who is incredibly awkward. Her conversations were the best parts of the book.

Maggie Dallen is a great YA author and this is the first of three stories about a group of three couples using themselves to test an assignment by their teacher about whether love can be quantified. This book is full of teen angst about grades, family embarrassments, and peer pressure. But also induces giggles and snorts. You'll love Dallen's style and want to read the other stories which release one week apart.

This story is magnetic and I loved it. It's loosely related to another book by this author in which the MC creates an app that predicts your perfect match so it was interesting to see the reactions of these teens to the app. In the other book, we only see people loving it and the reaction of the creator, so it was cool to see other reactions and more of how it works. I really enjoyed this book and loved how Zach and Anna interacted. Short, sweet, and definitely worth the read!

Short and sweet

This was a nice short read. I was kind of put off by the ages of the characters - I found myself wishing they were in college and in their 20’s (at least) as it felt a little awkward to read a book about characters so young. I feel like I would have loved this book if I had read it when I was 15-17. And again, it really was quite a short book, whereas I prefer slow burn books and really just more lengthy books in general.
