Pine Ridge Pack #2

Mine to Keep

Rate this book
Rowan - After a lifetime of wanting and waiting, last week I discovered the identity of my mate when I caught his scent lingering on my friend Rory’s skin. Every day I ask Rory questions about Dax to learn as much as possible about him, as well as drool over the photos Rory shows me. Dax is the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. When I finally meet him, I learn he’s also kind, sweet and funny. He’s my perfect match in every way and I love him with my whole heart. The only problem is that his heart already belongs to someone else. Rory says Dax’s boyfriend doesn’t treat him well or appreciate him, but my mate is attached. I would never force Dax to be with me. I only want his happiness; even if it’s with someone else, and even if his rejection shatters my world.

Dax - My life is pretty chaotic. My boyfriend has been out of work for a while, so I keep us afloat by working long hours at two jobs. Justin also counts on me to keep the house clean and food on the table; it was the deal I agreed to when I moved in with him several months ago. I stay very busy, and am thrilled to finally get a night off to hang out with my bestie Rory and his group of friends. When I arrive at Rory’s place, I meet Rowan, a drop dead gorgeous man with a heart of gold. I catch fast feelings for him before I realize what a terrible person I am. I’m a taken man. As much as it hurts, I have to keep my distance from Rowan. He’s too big of a temptation.
*This M/M paranormal romance is for readers 18 and up! It has no cliffhangers and a very happy HEA. It contains a sexy wolf shifter, his devoted pack and his lovable fated mate. This book is low angst, insta-love, and filled with funny moments and teeth tingling sweetness.

I live in rural Ohio with my husband and two sons who drive me nuts, but I love them with all my heart. I enjoy reading and writing romance of all types, but gay romance is my forte and favorite! Twice the sexy men? Yes, please! My books tend to be low angst because it hurts my heart, but they do contain lots of heartfelt moments, steamy scenes and a healthy dose of humor. Thank you to everyone for checking out my page and I hope you enjoy my books. Happy reading!

This instalove was so instant that if you skip a sentence you will miss an integral part of the relationship. And, oh my gosh, who doesn't love OTT cheesy lovesick crooning within an hour of meeting? No, it's not creepy at all....

*backs away slowly*

The good side of the book: there is no thinking required. No problem that isn't immediately solved. No angst or separation. No misunderstandings to get over.

Just hearts, flowers, unicorns, and porn. You know, cuz those things totally go together.

Still a nice fluffy series.

--------------------

This is insta-love on crack. If you don’t like it when the I love yous are flying around only hours after meeting, then don’t read this series.

Of course they are shifters who have been waiting for their fated mate all their lives, so I guess they are used to coming on strong when they finally meet the one.

I was really looking forward to Dax’s story when I first read about him in book 1. Dax, who was overweight, incredibly funny, but also in an abusive relationship (verbal abuse only at first). And I couldn’t wait for Rowan to show him what true love really was.

Was it everything I’d hoped for? Hmm, tough question. I really did like it, but there were also a few things that made me uncomfortable.

The things I really liked:
- Rowan taking care of Dax.
- The romance, even though things went a little too fast for me.
- The friendship between Rowan, Phoenix, and Stone.
- The friendship between Dax and Rory.

What I liked less:
- This book should have been at least 50-100 pages longer so that the story had more time to develop. The love declarations didn’t have to happen at the second meeting. Things should have been fleshed out more.
- How the thing with Justin was handled. I was quite surprised when Justin (the ex)

But I was in desperate need of a syrupy sweet story, and boy did this one deliver. And I really did like it, despite the rushed feeling of the story.

I'm still not feeling up to angst of any kind, so cheesy fluff it is.
This was super cute, just like book 1.

Now, onto book 3 😁

I loved the second book in this series (not as much as the first but it was still amazing).

Mine to Keep was a little bit too insta-love for me. I just couldn't feel the moment Dax fell in love with Rowan. Buuut I just chose to enjoy the book and go with the flow.

Dax was so sweet and amazing and ahhhh Rowan is the best! The way he treated Dax and the gentle things he said that soothed Dax's insecurities just warmed my heart!

O.k.

This was okay. It was meeting your mate and falling instantly inlove. Feeling as you have met the missing piece. So it was ok. I like the shifters so I want to see who Stone is fated to.

3.5/5.
“Which is wonderful and I appreciate it, but Rowan told me in an ‘I want you naked’ sort of way; a way that made my heart go all flippy and my dick go all stiffy.”

Mine to Keep is the second installment of Pine Ridge Pack. This time we have the best friend of Rory, Dax, and Rowan's mate. Unlike Rory, Dax is a little more fiery and is a fat protagonist. He is also in a relationship with Justin, an asshole boyfriend, and Rowan is the sappier, sweeter shifter healer of the pack.

I thought Dax and Rowan were cute. Rowan is very sweet and gentle and he loves Dax for who he is. Dax's boyfriend Justin is a real asshole who is using him, and they're also not intimate. Yet he still realizes he doesn't want to cheat and doesn't want to cross the line, so there is a bit of rejection until he realizes he can't be with Justin anymore and leaves him. For Dax as "fat rep", it was good, though Marx uses a few food jokes where I kind of side-eyed, but she doesn't use them nastily. It's more just, Dax likes food, but then there's pointed out how all of them love food and eat way more than him so it is fine, I guess? I dunno.

Plot wise, we get the bloody and unique murder of the abuse ex-boyfriend and everything else is just sappy I-love-yous, domesticity, and the best friends reunited. I am most excited for Stone's mate and how that one turns out!

I say this with love, this is utter trash (in a good way, I swear)! A rinse & repeat of book 1, but throw in a bit of fat phobia. Rowan & Dax are sweet and I loved the turn of body positivity for a male lead. Brain-numbing fluff.

I really liked what Phoenix did with the old pack lands. It was different and interesting and it helped round out the story from where he beat his brother Raven. Rowan was adorable in this book. He treated Dax like gold. Dax was hilarious and I enjoyed watching him and his friend Rory together. I hated Justin's character and was very pleased with what happened to him :D

Dax and Rowan

I loved the end of the first book when Rowan smells Dax and knows he's the one for him. So I have been trying to patiently wait for this book to come out.
Rowan is the sweetheart healer who is waiting for his mate. Dax, Rory's best friend is it for Rowan.
Sweet story of two men finding the love they deserve. Can't wait for Stone's book!

Finally!

Did NOT disappoint! Loved the first in the series so much I've been going nuts for this.

Reasonable amount of drama. Nice bits of action. Sweet romance. That wildflower scene made me all giggly. Wish it was longer but that's because I'm greedy. It was very satisfying.

Dax and Rowan are just... Dang. Loved them. Loved this book. Can't wait for Stone's story.

Rating (All ratings use a Scale of 1-5) = 3 (3.5 if rating as "Brain Candy") Nice average easy read. Very similar to the first.

Blurb = 5 - This is what a blurb should be to help readers choose books. The author states exactly the type of book she wrote including the insta-love.

My Genre Scale = 4 - Werewolves are my thing. The Brain Candy aspect, I'm moody about; typically only read when in the mood or when short on time / attention. I was in the mood for light and easy, so I chose this read. It was exactly as stated in the blurb.

Odds if not your genre = Read the blurb. Sounds good. Try.

Development of: =
*World = 3
*Plot = 3
*Characters = 3

What stood out = I loved, loved, having an m/c with a non-perfect body and completely out of shape etc...

Mood Type / Appeal to those looking for = Light and easy. Sweet & cheesy.
Fated mates / Insta-love.

Warnings = None

HFN/HEA = Definitely

Series Notes = 2nd of 3 that I'm aware of at this time.
*Reading on? Yes
*Reading back to back? Yes
*Can be easily read without the previous? Probably, though you do get a lot of the background on Dax in the first.

Rating Notes = (SubPlots, thoughts, etc... ) This functioned exactly as intended,as a nice easy escapist read to pass time. Nothing in this story particularly stands out (other than the unconventional m/c) or is memorable, but it was entertaining.

**************
Below are my explanations or thoughts on reviewing!
***************
1. I try to take into account and note any common pet peeves often bemoaned by other reviewers
2. "Brain candy' does not necessarily carry a negative connotation in my reviews. It has its uses; to pass time whet tired, on the beach, etc...  The problem is when I'm  expecting a novel and I get fluff. (What is brain candy? Pure entertainment; It may be formulaic, from an author published quickly like monthly, things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc.. Publishing industries version of pop music).
3. Blurb rating purpose:
Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read it. I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb.
4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing:
Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages; but the total number of books is usually much higher. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2021) was a 3.70 average for 1527 books. Which considering, one should be better at picking out books the more one reads, I feel is an accurate average. I have over 795 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads.

********** Contains Spoilers**********

This was the first series that I read by Jayda Marx, a couple of years ago but I never got around to posting a review on any of the books, so here goes. Jayda’s books are always filled with sunshine, sweetness and little to no angst. They just make me smile. I enjoyed this book and it was a bit more angsty than the previous book, and felt it was a bit more real when it wasn’t complete sunshine in roses in their mating to start with but of course everything worked out in the end. I thought that Rowan and Dax were great together. Dax totally deserve someone who loves him completely considering what an a*sehole his boyfriend Justin is. He treats Dax horribly and puts him down about his weight. Dax has very low self-esteem so he puts up with being treated like sh*t, as he just wants to be loved. Rowan, is a total sweetheart as he just wants Dax to be happy even if they don’t end up together, after things don’t go smoothly initially. When Dax was trying to guess Rowan’s favourite flower, and he couldn’t Rowan told him that he may have cheated a little, as he doesn’t have one particular favourite.

He’s always been drawn to wildflowers. As they’re strong and can thrive in tough conditions, and that people often overlook them because they’re different or imperfect, but that he thinks that makes them even more beautiful. He was totally talking about Dax, and Dax thought the same thing. The horrible thing is that it took, Justin hitting Dax for him to realise what he feels for Rowan, and that he ignored so many red flags were Justin’s treatment of him was concerned. Justin wasn’t working so Dax had to take a second job and then was also expected to cook and clean the house. Even when he was severely sick after leaving Rowan, he didn’t understand why he was sick. I loved how Stone’s all gruff but is really happy to teach Rory and Dax to protect themselves, as he believes that everyone should at least know some self defence moves. I totally think that Stone is going to fall head over heels for his mate, even though he believes he wont be anything like Phoenix or Rowan where their mates are concerned so I’m really looking forward to reading the final book in the series when he finds his mate. I’d recommend this book, series, universe and author to others.

"That's it!" Stone barked, standing up. "I'm about to either heave up my hot dogs or jab myself in the eye with this pointy stick."

Before starting, I knew that this was a short story with low-angst and insta-love. I didn't expect any plot, just love, fluff and happy ending, which is what I was craving and why I picked up this book. I wanted to read something fluffy, comforting, easy, where there's no thinking required. So, I was sort of prepared, I guess, but still...

As stated, there's insta-love, it's all very simple, everyone is loving and affectionate towards each other. No angst. Even when Dax finds out about werewolves, he is very chill, glad and accepting about everything ( ).

It is so, so fast paced. In fact, I've never read anything so fast paced. Whatever problem (thought, insecurity, doubt, danger, misunderstanding, whatever) is introduced at the beginning of the paragraph, it mostly gets resolved by the end of the paragraph.

I can understand why Rowan feels insta-love (he's a werewolf), but Dax also fell in love the moment he saw Rowan and this felt a bit unnatural (but it's not a big deal, again, I knew that beforehand). They confess and get officially together the second time they see each other. And the whole book follows the timeline of around one week.

For me personally, the relationship, their attraction and love felt too shallow. Their moments together were the cheesiest cheesy cheese, their words of affirmation sweet and a bit over the top, but I didn't mind that; it's the fast pace and the lack of chemistry & relationship growth that ruined it for me. I don't even mind insta-love (and I love concept of fated mates), but I wish there was more build up and wooing; to their first touch, kiss, confession... Again, everything in this book is solved within 2-3 sentences.

Some things that probably weren't supposed to be funny made me laugh...

Now, allow me to talk about Dax's boyfriend-turned-ex (quite fast) Justin. I loved the concept of Dax being in toxic, unloving relationship, which is was why I picked up this book in the first place. But there was no healing, comfort, or slow joy of Rowan showing Dax that he's worthy of love and affection. Like, Dax instantly gets over Justin and his insecurities are also gone as fast. You know, normally, it really takes time to heal when you leave toxic relationship that made you feel unlovable. Dax's insta-love for Rowan, that I can accept considering they're fated mates, but him getting over everything instantly... that felt really forced and just killed it for me.

Regarding Justin... how things turned out with him just left me dumbfounded. The next part has major spoilers so you're warned:

Sigh. Okay.

Things I did like in this book:
-Rowan loving Dax just the way he is and never asking him to change a single thing about himself.
-Trying to pamper him, learn more about him and making him his favorite food.
-It was so sweet how Rowan so casually gave Dax cutesy nicknames, especially because that was one small thing that Dax craved so much but asking for it from his ex felt like asking for a world.
- Stone. I liked quite Stone a lot (despite how little we get to know him) and I'm torn about whether to read his book (the 3rd one in the series) because I'm worried I won't enjoy him as much as I expect it.

If you like/love super low-angst, insta-love, and a crap ton of sweet fluff that’ll leave you with cavities this book and author is for you.

To be honest, I was looking forward to this one from the start. I found out about this series because of this book haha and the synopsis was just super cute and I love me some cute, positive pining characters.

However, there was less pining from Rowan, like maybe a chapter. And I guess I also realized I don’t care for super fluff stories. I need my fluff gradual and in teasing bits rather than in an abundance, all at once, but I knew this was going to be that way. I just thought I would enjoy it more this time around, but I found myself skimming a majority of the book. I did laugh super hard at the scenes with Stone, so I cannot wait for his story and who is mate is.

There were incredibly cute moments and positive relationship rep. I also really love the fat rep. There is definitely not a lot of it, especially of men (it’s usually the love interest’s before body when they were “losers” if it’s even mentioned that they were fat) and in (paranormal) romance, erotica, etc.

3/5

Much of this review matches what I thought of the first book in this series. I actually waited to write either review until I finished this book because I was so torn on how I felt about this author’s style. It didn’t seem right to knock a score simply because of style preference. Usually, is just skip the book. But these two books had enough good points that I got through each of them.
I did find Dax to be more funny and interesting than Rory. He and Rowan are also super icky lovey dovey. The writing is all about telling the reader everything. Including the awkward conversations, strange dialogue, and obvious conflict. There is still that emphasis on respecting one another and appreciating the one’s romantic partner.
Just as with the last book, I decided that bc of the “possession” and “send half” nonsense, that I couldn’t give a “4”. This book and the prior in the series follow the exact same formula, so while the order does matter, you’re not getting much from one that you don’t from the other.
I still think these books are for horny churchgoers.

this is exactly what i knew it was going in so i cannot fault it for ANYTHING but somehow this just wasn’t my thing :/

the writing was TOOOOOOOO stilted and awkward and im ALL FORRR ignoring bad writing in favor of good schmoopy romance trust me the shit i’ve read! but SOMEHOW this romance didn’t click w me. i also thought that like, while we want dax’s ex to be shitty, he goes from typical asshole ex to abuser to CRIMINAL???? in a way that to me wasn’t believable and his reappearance at the end felt unnecessary 😭 the internalized fatphobia dax felt just immediately disappearing when in a relationship w rowan was also so. if ur going to have it EXPLORE IT or don’t include it at all!

i thought i could enjoy a fated mates instalove and maybe i can but not the way this author writes it 🥴🥴 i started skimming HEAVYYY and didn’t enjoy myself

i originally downloaded it hours ago and forgot it existed and perhaps it should have stayed that way….
