Selma Lagerlöf

In 1909 she became the first woman to ever receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, "in appreciation of the lofty idealism, vivid imagination and spiritual perception that characterize her writings". She later also became the first female member of the Swedish Academy.
Born in the forested countryside of Sweden she was told many of the classic Swedish fairytales, which she would later use as inspiration in her magic realist writings. Since she for some of her early years had problems with her legs (she was born with a faulty hip) she would also spend a lot of time reading books such as the Bible.
As a young woman she was a teacher in the southern parts of Sweden for ten years before her first novel Gösta Berling's Saga was published. As her writer career progressed she would keep up a correspondance with some of her former female collegues for almost her entire life.
Lagerlöf never married and was almost certainly a lesbian (she never officially stated that she was, but most later researchers believe this to be the case). For many years her constant companion was fellow writer Sophie Elkan, with whom she traveled to Italy and the Middle East. Her visit to Palestine and a colony of Christians there, would inspire her to write Jerusalem, her story of Swedish farmers converting into a evangelical Christian group and travelling to "The American Colony" in Jerusalem.
Lagerlöf was involved in both women issues as well as politics. She would among other things help the Jewish writer Nelly Sachs to come to Sweden and donated her Nobel medal to the Finnish war effort against the Soviet union.
Outside of Sweden she's perhaps most widely known for her children's book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils).

En veslevoksen fjortenåring sin dagbok. I seg selv ikke så veldig givende, men jeg har rukket å bli glad i Selma (se, vi er på fornavn) i løpet av disse memoarene - så den treffer meg allikevel. Nå burde jeg ta sats å bevege meg videre inn i forfatterskapet hennes (Jerusalem, I'm looking at you).

Det är så fint att tankarna en fjortonåring hade 1873, och som sattes på pränt i en bok fr 1932(!!!) är samma som jag har idag. Kanske som min mormors mamma hade när hon läste i samma bok. Historiens vingslag osvosv. Ger den nog en 3a egentligen men blir för sentimental när mitt Uppsala nämns. Uppskattade hennes små kommentarer inför inledandet av varje dagboksanteckning också.
”Men så trött, som jag var, kunde jag inte somna, utan låg bara och vred mig. Och när jag hörde, att de andra sov, tände jag ljuset och skrev ner detta här sista, för jag trodde, att jag skulle sluta opp att tänka på allt det, som hade hänt mig idag, bara jag fick alltsammans nedskrivet” (me core)
”Jag tror inte, att det finns någon mer än jag på hela gymnastiken, som är fjorton år. Och så är det överallt, vart jag kommer. Jag undrar alltid vart fjortonåringarna har tagit vägen.”
”Det var ett vackert svar, men jag tyckte inte, att han hade rätt. För om jag kunde skriva vers, så skulle jag aldrig, aldrig, aldrig vilja göra något annat.”
”Nu ser jag ett rött slott oppe på en hög backe. Och reskamraterna plockar ner sina saker från hyllorna. Vi måtte redan vara i Uppsala. Tänk, vad tiden går fort, när man för dagbok!”
”Allting var så muntert och vackert. Och vädret var ganska bra. Allting var som det borde vara i Uppsala.”

I have never read anything by Selma Lagerlöf before, such a shame seeing she's one of Swedens most famous authors through history. I found this old edition of her diary (there seems there are two more parts, which I certainly plan on getting my hands on now) early in January and randomly decided to pick it up. Such a delight to read! Although she was only 14 years old writing this, you can tell she has a gift for capturing the beautiful and the magical in any life events. The writing in itself reminds me of how beautiful Swedish language can be, how much the language has changed over the past 100 or so years and how exquisite I find the old-Swedish way of writing and talking to be. I found myself travelling through time, seeing the Sweden of 1870s - a time of which I have little knowledge, especially set in Sweden. The diary was such a nice way of experiencing and learning about history, in a way that was both fun and enlightening. I really like the girl that wrote this diary and I hope I can hear her voice through the stories she later wrote, that I look forward to experiencing this year.

Mysig, men inte särskilt spännande eller intressant egentligen. Jag skulle inte rekommendera den som en bok att läsa för handlingens skull, utan snarare för att lyfta Lagerlöf som person.

Ett utdrag ur den fjortonåriga Selma Lagerlöfs liv. Det är väldigt intressant att se det gamla Stockholm ur hennes ögon.
