I'm sure I'm not the only person out there who *wants* to eat healthier, but gets overwhelmed trying to put together healthy meals and winds up just hitting Taco Bell at lunch. I like that these new books are coming out with meal prep strategies and plans, and I am totally eating them up.

This one is very handy, especially in it's ebook format, which makes link hopping much easier.

I'll be learning from it, for sure. ...but after Thanksgiving, of course.

Tasty

Great tasty, variety of nutritious recipes for different diets. Some of them are gluten free, overnight steel cut oats, and the sheet pan dinners, etc.

I have found when I plan out my meals and spend time prepping the food so meals can be quick, that I eat much better. This should not be shocking but sometimes life gets in the way and I forget that spending an hour or two of shopping and prepping food can save me more time and effort later on in the week.

Shallal is a registered dietitian and personal trainer. After becoming a mom, she knew meal prep was the best way for her to lose the baby weight. Her cookbook includes three sections teaching about the science of losing weight and how to meal prep. She then offers meal prep recipes including basic, batch -friendly, flavor variety, and superefficient recipes. Her last section includes healthy carbs, delicious veggies, proteins, and snacks. At the end of the book, she also includes a list of fruits and veggies that are usually heavy in pesticides and should be purchased as organic and others that you can mostly not have to worry as much when purchasing them. A chart of measurement conversions and an index of recipes complete the book.

I loved how she preps the reader with ideas for creating a plan including a chart for What I Have, Recipes to Make, and What I Need. Then she offers helpful tools and equipment that will be helpful for the meal prep. I also loved her tips for freezing versus storing in the fridge. Not everything holds up well in the freezer. Plus, not everything tastes good after being reheated in the microwave and she shares tips for reheating as well.

Some of the recipes I’m anxious to try include Chopped Rainbow Mediterranean Salad, Protein-Packed Peanut Butter and Berry Overnight Oats, Taco-Stuffed Sweet Potatoes, Easy Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas, and Easy Layered Enchilada Casserole to name a few. One recipe I’ve made twice already, once for myself and again for our family Christmas last weekend was the Glazed Slow Cooker Carrots. I love cooked carrots but no one else in our house does, so I took the chance to make these so I could have them for a few meals. They were also a hit at the family Christmas and since they are so quick and easy to make, they are perfect to take to a gathering.

I really appreciate Kelli Shallal’s easy recipes, helpful tips, and plans for meal prep. I wish there were more pictures in the cookbook as I love seeing the recipe I am making, but that is really my only negative for this cookbook. If you would like some guidance on planning and prepping meals, Kelli Shallal’s cookbook is an excellent place to start.

Originally published on my blog Nonstop Reader.

Meal Prep for Weight Loss is a tutorial and recipe guide for weight loss written and curated by Kelli Shallal. Released 15th Oct 2019 by Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 265 pages and available in paperback and ebook format.

The book has a logical format. Chapter 1-2 covers the background of weight loss and benefits of meal-prep and planning as well as a very general layman-accessible discussion of the mechanics of weight loss itself. Chapter 3-6 cover meal prep and planning, making lists, batch cooking, food safety and storage. There is a lot of good advice in these chapters which are applicable to any meal prep and planning sessions, not just for the AIP. The author also includes some logical pointers about containers, ingredients, and supplies. Chapters 7+ include a number of batch-friendly recipes arranged thematically: carbs, veggies, proteins, snacks.

The meal plan chapters include a surprisingly varied selection of multiple day to weekly meal plans with different tastes and representing different world cuisines: Italian, American, Asian fusion, and more.

The recipes have their ingredients listed bullet style in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard only. Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. The ingredients are all easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store.
It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. The book also includes a short author bio, and a metric conversion chart, but lacks any index or ingredients lists.

My one small quibble with the book is that the recipes are mostly not photographed. There are some photos, and they're clear and attractive, but they only represent about 5% of the recipes.

Well done. This book would make a great gift/housewarming for someone looking for sensible weight loss recipes as well as fans of food prep planning / batch cooking.

Four stars.

Big mistakes with in the first few recipes. Recipe marked as gluten free, but Farro was listed as one of the main ingredients. Farro is NOT GLUTEN FREE! There is a disclaimer at the end of most is not all recipes marked gluten free. In a nut shell it telling the reader to double check the ingredients that they uses for the recipe to insure the recipe is gluten free even though it's marked as a gf recipe. Makes since to most of us with allergies and food sensitivity. However, I have an issue with an author that lists all of their achievements and has credentials RD to have an error like this. Which leaves me with serious doubts about the authors credibility.

This book is well organized and easy to follow. Information is provided on equipment as well as weekly plans and grocery lists. Even better is the step-by-step guide for preparing a group of meals in one day. One thing that I particularly like is the fact that storage tips are provided. When you are doing meal prep, it is important to know whether the prepped meals will freeze well. The structure of the book makes it easy for someone to develop a meal plan of their own based on the recipes. Another positive is that the ingredients are items that can be found easily at your local grocery store and something that you are likely to use on more than one occasion. The book also considers special eating plans such as dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free and Mediterranean. Because there are substitutions listed when possible, I believe there is something in here for everyone. Thank you to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book.

Thank you Callisto Publishing for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. I did like the premise of the book. The pictures are colorful and the recipes looked good. But I felt like the menu planning part got a bit lazy as most of the time you repeat the meals several times a week. It doesn't seem to me that the recipes allowed for a family of 4 to have enough leftovers to have multiple times a week. Not that my family would got for having leftovers that many times. I would use the cookbook for recipes but probably not meal planning.

Easy, tasty and Filling

This is the first meal prep "diet" book that has made a big difference. I put diet in quotes, because nothing is off limits. I can eat like this for the rest of my life.

I love how meal prep is slowly ramped up from one week to the next. If you are cooking for a family, it's easy to double the recipes as well. After a few weeks, you'll be doing major meal prep and it will be like a natural extension of your life. I have a tendency to jump in with bug changes, get overwhelmed and stressed over time. Not with this book. She makes sure to start with baby steps.

The food is also tasty and filling! Calorie wise I've cut back following her meal plans, and I feel satisfied after a meal. Even better, I get hungry after four to 6 hours later. You know, regular mealtimes! I've cut snacking down a ton because o just don't get hunger pangs.

When I first saw the recipes I was tempted to alter some of them but am glad I stuck with it. The yogurt parfaits, one of the first breakfasts you'll make, have almond butter in them. It works so well!!! Very tasty and, I believe, makes it more filling. I'm not a fan of homogeneous yogurt, I like different flavors, so I just drizzle the almond butter on top instead of mixing it it. She also gives advice on how to increase calories or sub out common allergens.

Before each week, there is a shopping list, with amounts needed for each meal prep. The easiest shopping experience ever. No thinking needed.

If you want to save money, eat healthier and get yourself to a healthier weight, I highly recommend this book. Especially if you feel tired and overwhelmed just thinking of how to change your habits, this book takes all the guess work out and the author, being a registered dietitian, puts together very filling, nutritious meals.

great easy recipes

I love this cookbook. The recipes are easy using ingredients already in my house. Low fat and calories are what I need while I’m on Semaglutide because any other foods cause violent gastrointestinal upset.

I love this book. There’s a lot of good recipes in here. At the beginning for the first few chapters, she gives a grocery list and the order in which to everything so that you aren’t overwhelmed, and I appreciate that so much. Hopefully, I can stick to this.

Meal Prep for weight loss by Kelli Shallal RD
Very colorful photos throughout this book, but not recipes.
Has everything you will need to know to get on track for a healthy lifestyle.
I am a foodie and after my husband's heart attack 6 years next week we trimmed our meals down so they are even better than before.
Love the meal plate method and that is the one we use. Also on weekends we prepare many meals and freeze others for later that week or another week. Use vacuum seal for freezing items in the freezer.
Use pressure cooker to make lots of meals/soups ahead of time and for freezer for later use.
Table of contents starts this book out. Like section on kitchen equipment.
Intro talks about the authors methods and why she choose them with her busy life.
Very easy to understand the concept without having to count individual calorie intake. There are charts and many highlighted sections that target what you need to read.
Examples of what to eat and the amounts.
Love reheating guide, meal plans and recipes.
Each recipe starts with a title, prep and cook times and summary of the dish.
list of ingredients are listed and you should be able to substitute for your healthier dietary needs: low sodium, low fat and low sugar products and fresh vs. canned.
Directions are given along with tips on how to store and serve.
Nutritional information per size listed: calories, fat-NOT broken up into good or bad, carbs, fiber, protein and sodium are listed.
There are NO pictures of individual recipes.
Like different sections as it pertains to meal plans for so many meals at a time.
Special sections for carbs, veggies, proteins, snacks, etc
Dirty dozen and clean fifteen is also mentioned at the end along with charts for conversions.
Index is listed at the end.
Acknowledgements and about the author are included at the end.
A KEEPER for me because of all the suggestions and down to earth reasoning and recipes are to die for. Wish they had photos but I can picture them in my mind.
Received a review copy from The Callisto Publisher's Club Team and this is my honest opinion.

The author's approach to this to book is intended to help you create a healthy lifestyle that facilitates weight loss. "If you can eat healthy 80% of the time, you will still be able to lose weight and enjoy treats the 20% of the time. Meal prepping is a powerful tool to help you reach that 80% because it creates consistency in your eating behavior." And that consistency leads to long term lifestyle changes.

The book features very helpful tips (I like the approximate steam times for a list of 8 different vegetables), conversion charts, pantry list, the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen, prep time/cook times for the each recipe and varied meal and food prep plans. The abundant recipes sound not only healthy, but absolutely delicious! Not just salad or vegetables (but made with REAL food... I can't wait to try the Chopped Rainbow Mediterranean Salad with Chicken, Caprese Chicken Pasta w/ Roasted Tomatoes, Crispy Chicken Thighs w/ Roasted Potatoes and Green Beans, Red Wine Marinated Steak....and on and on.) I have bookmarks everywhere! The food combinations are designed to help you lose weight. Each recipe is tagged in the categories it fits i.e. Dairy free - Soy Free - Gluten Free - Mediterranean - Vegan - Vegetarian, etc.....

Two Thumbs up. Wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Using a meal prep plan as a basis for healthy weight loss and healthy eating. The meal preps include shopping lists as well as step-by-step cooking lists. Portioning, storing, and reheating instructions are included. It offers a range of 3, 4, 5, and 6 Recipe Meal Preps. It also includes chapters of recipes so that if you want to do the 1 Carb, 1 Protein, 1 Veggie meal prep you can pick what to make. I found a lot of tasty recipes that I have incorporated into my meals. Each recipe includes a storage tip, an ingredient tip, what to add if more calories are needed. I found spending a day prepping for the week is a time-saver for the weeknights ahead. It’s so simple to just pull out what is already prepared and heat. Nice layout, easy to follow, and full of information.

Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy of Meal Prep for Weight Loss.

One of the things I dread most on a Sunday is meal=prepping. I hate making things in bulk, especially if I'm trying a recipe for the first time. I'm incredibly picky so when I make things in bulk, and then don't like it, I end up wasting the rest... However, this book has some really tasty-sounding (not tasty-looking since there aren't many pictures) that I look forward to trying.

Tasty sounding recipes and useful meal plan prep info

I found many of the recipes to cause me to salivate. Want to try them.

I like that book has thorough directions, nutritional facts, healthful ingredients, and cuisine variety.

Only negative for me is that many weeks’ meal plans have same breakfast and/or lunch. I would need to adjust the plans so I didn’t repeat meals so frequently.
