While I appreciate the concept of lagom and its potential benefits for achieving a more balanced life, I found this book to be somewhat repetitive and lacking in depth. The author provides a lot of practical tips, but I didn't feel like I gained any new insights or perspectives on the topic. That being said, even though the book is not so well written, it offers a good introduction to the concept of lagom for those new to the idea.

I appreciate the information in this book, but the editing (or lack thereof) was distracting. Subject/Verb disagreement, sentence fragments that shouldn’t be, obvious places where the author was waffling between two word choices and didn’t delete the one decided on. It was distracting. Good book, just not actually polished, or quite ready for publishing.

Balancing Act: Embracing Lagom for a Happier, Healthier Life

"Lagom," a concise yet impactful book comprising fewer than 100 pages, delves into the virtues of embracing a balanced lifestyle and elucidates why its pursuit is not only beneficial but also transformative. Drawing insightful comparisons between the lifestyles of the Swedish and Americans, the author extends the principles of Lagom beyond the domestic sphere, exploring its applications in work, office dynamics, dietary choices, holidays, relationships, financial management, hobbies, pet care, and travel, among other facets of life.

At its core, Lagom advocates for equilibrium—eschewing extremes in favor of cultivating a harmonious existence. The philosophy encourages embracing just the right amount of what we desire or require, fostering a state of contentment that, in turn, contributes to a markedly happier and healthier life. With a focus on moderation and mindful choices, Lagom presents a holistic approach to well-being that transcends the conventional boundaries of self-help literature. In a world often characterized by excess, this book serves as a poignant reminder that a life lived in balance can be the key to sustained joy and fulfillment. Highly recommended for those seeking a practical and enriching guide to harmonizing various aspects of their lives.

Heavily overwritten and redundant - ironically for a book about “just enough”

This book is cozy, like its companion piece about hygge. However, it is incredibly redundant and padded. This book could have been 1/4th the size - and you will feel the bloat.

Also, some passages seem contradictory. One chapter indicts Americans bringing the classic “brown bag” lunch to work while extolling the virtuous Swedish practice of eating lunch on ceramic plates. However, on the overwrought chapter on Christmas, the author suggests using paper plates instead of one’s fine Chian! So nice plates for everyday WORKPLACE lunches and paper plates for Christmas, got it.

This book is silly. You’d be better off reading a listicle (not something I thought I would ever promote but here we are) instead of dedicating a whole book of reading time to this concept.

Suffers From Poor Editing

2.5/5

The idea of Lagom sounds interesting and helpful, but this book wasn't great.

It gave me a starting point to further research the idea, but it was written even more simply than Hayden's book on Hygge. One positive is that this book was less tone deaf and preachy than the other one.

The bad - it was either not edited at all or edited very poorly by someone with little to no editing experience. It was painful to read poorly constructed sentences, misspelled words, poor grammar, missing and redundant phrases, and more.

I'm sure there are better books on this topic, so while it was a helpful place to start, I can't recommend it to others.

Lagom: The Ultimate Guide to Scandinavian Ways of Living a Balanced Life Filled with Coziness and Happiness by Barbara Hayden
Lagom part is about the Swedish part is about how to be happy and fulfill life.
Has much of what the first book contains with same outcome but differences as well.
Found the book interesting as I have heard about these before and have seen how Danish life, even in Vikings days of having a big great room for all to congregate.

Decent book, I enjoyed all the examples of ways you can implement these ideas. My biggest complaint would be it’s pretty repetitive but not overwhelmingly so. Good book and intro to lagom through kindle unlimited

Was surprised by how many editing errors there are in such a short book. I couldn’t get past chapter 4.

Not much depth to the book, but if you’re looking for a super simplified read on Lagom, this is a decent start if you’re able to ignore the lack of proofreading.

I enjoyed the book and thought the author did a good job of explaining the lagom lifestyle. However, the book is full of careless grammar errors. It needed editing before it was published.
