Get Your Rocks Off #1

Away with the Faeries

Rate this book
They’ve haunted my dreams, now they’re coming for me.

I’ve lived in Gisbourne my whole life, feeling like nothing other than a set of symptoms to my family, my town.

Until now

Asked to photograph the outright debauchery of Avalon Records latest launch, I look and I look and I look until finally I see it.

My parents gave me a camera when I was a kid to help me see the truth: there’s no such thing as the fae.

What if they were wrong?

Seriously, what else could these beautiful people be?

My favourite band, the Changelings: a group of bad boys who shine in my lens, so brightly they threaten to burn me up. Why are they taking an unholy interest in me. Hunting me down, luring me closer, using every damn means they have to box me in, tie me down. And for what?

I’m about to step beyond the lens, become something else altogether and I’m not sure any of us are ready for it.

Author note: This is a reverse harem, paranormal, enemies to lovers kind of romance with multiple love interests. 18+ only for steamy goodness.

This book... I don’t even know where to begin.. it was amazing. I started reading it right before bedtime thinking I’d get through a few chapters and pick it back up in the morning.. NOPE.. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. It was all sex, drugs and rock n roll and hey, let’s add some faerie magic into the mix just for shits and giggles. I LOVED it. I love the mystery that surrounds Kira’s illness and how you have all these people who are in on what’s going on while she’s just there, trying to break down her favorite band to show the world who they are. And then once the real magic hits and she’s thrust into a new world of pretty with a heavy side of manipulation.. and she’s finally said fuck it, I’m not just going let everyone just railroad me anymore and learns how to say “no”. LOVED IT. Ok, so I may not be making sense at all, but seriously.. I finished this book hours ago and my thoughts are still going a mile a minute. I’m everywhere and this book put me there. Want to know the real kicker though? I don’t even like the whole rockstar trope thing, but when Sam Hall said she was doing a book with rockstar faeries I was like sign me up! because this woman makes magic happen. And what an amazing job she did. This book gave me some major vibes. Yeah.. maybe I’ll come back in a few days and try to write a better review for you because I just can’t put it into real, coherent thoughts right now. Oh.. did you ever read The Hunger Games? Did you like Cinna? Well bisch.. you better go on and grab this book because my man Marlow is going to make you forget all about Cinna. Who? That’s right.. he is no one now compared to Marlow 🤤🤤. Ok seriously, I’m done for now and will revisit this review when I’ve chilled out some; this book has made me feel as though I’ve just down 4 cups of coffee and they are all starting to hit my system.

GET THIS BOOK NOW!! You won’t regret it.

Hot mess

Dnf, at 28% I was calling it. This book is a sad attempt at a RH. Our fmc is just sad, she's weird and not in a good way, I rolled my eyes with her being a big a*** baby, I think the author was going for innocence but it came out just wrong, I really felt like she was mentally ill in a childlike way. I was just uncomfortable reading how this little girl who is a wreck around every situation and everyone, then! She's hired to take orgy pics, Come on!!!! Her self esteem and self worth is constantly taking a hit by her own self, and as one guy puts his hands on her head to lower her to her knees? And she just is like "duh" . just no!!

Kira only feels normal when she is shooting photos and deconstructing everything with her artist’s eyes. Suffering from a neurological condition she also thinks she sees Fae.

With her beloved grandma Nan’s warnings that something is coming for her and she needs to be warded, Kira’s life consists of taking pics, developing them and talking to her best friend Jen. And every night after she’s suffered a spell, Liam Hartley, from her favorite band, the Changelings, visits her in her sleep and becomes her dream lover. He, too, tells her they’re coming for her.

So when Jen informs Kira she’s been hired to take photos at Jen’s father’s newest recording label project, where the Changelings will be playing, she decides to go for it.

What Kira gets is more than just an opportunity to take some serious shots and get noticed during the multimillion dollar Garden of Eden tour. Something is changing fundamentally in and around Kira.

Wow, was this a surprise! This is not your typical Fae tale of human girl getting in over her head with Fae guys and gals. This was a true coming of age story, a caterpillar into a butterfly type of experience.

I adored all of the characters! Kira is so cool. She deals with a lot with her weird condition, but really works to make a separate life for herself. Then there’s the band. Hot! And once she’s hired and into the Garden of Eden festivities, everything changes. Like, everything.

This was sensual and decadent and absolutely unique. 🖤

I'm soooo confused

I feel so confused by this book and all the 5 star reviews.
This book to me was all over the place. It started out ok I thought, girl with a disorder trying to live with it the best she can. Loves to take pictures, mostly outdoor shots it seems, around where she lives. She has this best friend, who is super rich who "takes care" of her.
The book is about fae so I instantly assumed She had some sort of block on her to keep her hidden from what she was. She has a crazy grandma and bitter almost resentful parents. She is shy, a bit naive, extremely sheltered...like extremely. The way she lives her life it's clear she hasn't done or seen much.
So it was really shocking and completely weird when when gets hired to photograph a party at her best friends and ends up taking porn shots.....?? Ummmmm.....????? What.....????
And in the middle of this she starts going into transition into a fae. And now that whole aspect of the book is just as confusing. She has to pick a protector, and pick a clan, and some other such nonsense. And apparently when you transition you want to have sex with everything you see.
And then there is ALLLLLLLLL the guys. First it's Mark the hot, bodyguard who keeps her bestie safe. They were close to having sex before the party started and before she transitioned, but apparantly that can't happen now that she has. Then there is Marlow, and Aen( some weird Fae cat, shapeshifter thing) and the entire band she loves and her besties dad. Ugh....just stop already.

All the rules she was supposed to suddenly adhere too was confusing and convoluted. All the men vying for her to be their forever sex slave was messed up. This whole book was messed up imo. I kept reading waiting for the enemies to lovers to happen...it didn't. She ended up having who She wanted at the end. No enemy about it. This seems more like a RH if anything, but it's not tagged as that, so who knows.
I just didn't like this at all and will definitely not be reading anymore. I'm slightly curious as to what happens but I'm sure when I wake up tomorrow I'll forget about it and move on, never to read anything by this author again.

4.5.

I read this on a bit of a whim, as I'm a sucker for the Fae and rock bands, so I thought...give it a try. And what can I say apart from I enjoyed that more than I probably should have!

When you predominantly read a certain genre, in my case Urban Fantasy, Fantasy light, PNR, sometimes Sci Fi, with RH thrown in there, too, you develop a pretty secure list of things you love in a book and have little tolerance for. While I sometimes push my boundaries in how dark I'll go with a book (not a fluff fan here) I tend to try and avoid books with things I know I don't enjoy. But sometimes a book comes along that amanges to include many things you usually don't like, but somehow make work, in fact, not just work, but pull off bloody well.

Let's try and actually review this now.

So, our MC is a fragile, repressed and insular person who suffers from debilitating migraines with a fun dose of hallucination. With a history of schizophrenia in her family with her Grandmother, and no real medical explanation for the severity of her condition, Kiera has resigned herself to her situation of a strict sleep, diet and medication schedule to get by. All of this is under the watchful eyes if her parenta as, despite being in he late twenties, she lives in a cottage on their land, along with her supposedly schizophrenic Grandma who has delusions about the Fae. The only light on Kiera's life in her photography, and she dreams of carving out a career and gaining some independence.

When her best friend, who just happens to be mega filthy rich, gets her a job photographing her favourite band as her record label Dad's big Bachanalia style media event with the artists on his label, Kiera enters a world that completely up ends her life.

Basically, this totally hooked me from the start. Kiera copes through her photography and she almost views the world as if through the men's if her camera, because its her safety net. I really enjoyed this aspect to her personality and it made her feel more authentic. While the book, on one level, got progressively more extreme in what was going on, and potentially slightly incredulous, I didn't care for one minute as I was hooked and along for whatever ride it was taking me on.

I started the book thinking the band were clearly going to the Harem, but that's not really the case, at least not yet. It went in a direction that was a bit random two thirds if the way through, particularly through the love interests, but I am interested to see how it plays out.

I'm being annoyingly vague as I don't really want to spoil the ride.

A couple of warnings, particularly as they would often be things that would put me off. The band (although they're not as dominant in the book as the blurb would suggest) totally indulge in the groupie lifestyle openly in front of her. It's not really other woman stuff, as they owe her t nothing at this stage and don't really know her, but I know that can be off putting. I'm not even sure how I feel about any of them yet.

The MC also becomes a complete sex kitten rather dramatically. This does make sense with the story and what happens to her but usually this would have me eye rolling. But like I said, apart from the vague twithx in the back of my mind, I was totally into pretty much everything that happened in this book.

So, at the end of this long review, I really do recommend this book quite highly. I'm not sure why it worked for me, but it really did.

It’s half way through the book and the fmc is being railroaded into uncomfortable situation after uncomfortable situation. Yet, all she does is fantasize about having sex with guys she barely knows. Totally out of character, but that’s ok, because bonus sex scene? So, now you know the point of the book... reviews waxed on about a fmc with mental illness, but that’s misnomer. She’s being lied to and the point is that she DOESN’T have and illness and her fake “illness” is freakin migraines. Headaches are not a mental illness, I hate to burst your bubble. What else? I wanted to like the book, except the fmc is too busy fantasizing to be a stronger, more interesting, lead. It’s super patronizing, in that the guys are “helping” her to find the person she wants to be. How about she finds a backbone and figures it out herself?! No. It seems like everyone will be in her harem, so many guys, so they’re just erotic stereotypes. I thought the band thing was cool, sadly they have no real point except to write more sex into the story. Yeah, this was a disappointing miss for me.

This book pulled me in so fast I don't even know what to say. Sam Hall has blown it out of the park with this unique take on faeries. Away with Faeries follows a fantastic FMC, Kira, who goes through a BA transformation which only boosted how much I like her. The guys are are so different, and there is a large sense of mystery that strung me along to the last word. I sat here, at only 30%, wishing it wasn't going to end. I'm anxious to see what's next for Kira and her guys!

Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

Dude!!! I don't even know if I have the words to express my deep undying love for this book. The writing is amazing, the storyline is epic and the characters are delicious, how could I not love this book.

Away with the Faeries is the first book the Get Your Rocks Off series by Sam Hall. This is a paranormal reverse harem that is full of gorgeous fashion, amazing art, sexy rockstars, and best of all, the fae. Kira is the main female character who is about to get a crash course into the supernatural world. When a job at her best friend's estate gets a little too wild Kira starts to believe that maybe her crazy nan was right, that the fae are all around us.

Kira is so close to my heart. She is an introvert who lives on her family's property in a small town in Australia. Kira is shy and with her illness likes to not cause too many problems for the people in her life. One of my favorite things about her is that she is a photographer. She takes amazing pictures and the way her brain works is fascinating. Kira examines everything with an artist's eye, the way she sees a scene in front of her the way she breaks down people into composites is different than anything I have come across.

After Kira is exposed to the supernatural world she tries to figure out her place in this new world, who she is, and what she truly wants. She is experiencing things for the first time and she is doing it basically on her own which is gives her confidence that she didn't have before and she is doing it with wit, sassy and a whole lot of something and I loved it.
The only downside to this book was that I wish I had scenes from the guys pov and I wished Sam delved more into Kira's relationship with her best friend. Jennifer Rutherglen, who is a rich daddy's girl but loves Kira with her whole heart, the two get along so well so I would have loved to see more scenes with these to but the story didn't necessarily call for it. It's just that Jen is a bit of a mystery, she is more than a pretty face and seems like it would have been an interesting addition to the story.

Let's talk boys. I don't want to give to much away but there are two guys that I am in total gaga with, and one of them was quite the surprise but reminds me of another character in another book that I absolutely love and at this point, I'm starting to think I have a type. He makes an appearance kinda late but damn, what an appearance. As for the band, I'm not sure what I feel about the boys. They have a lot to make up for and of course, there is the one guy who wants to fight destiny. We haven't even gotten to his crap yet but it's gonna be interesting seeing how Kira handles the guys and vice versa.

Away with the Faeries is such an interesting story with a unique twist to the fae lore. It's filled with fae politics, sex, faery deals, fae laws and so much more. Sam has a very descriptive way of writing without overdoing it but making things seem more. The story flowed so smoothly and the fae are everything I could have wanted them to be, sexy, dangerous, glamorous, that through lavish and outrageous parties that you kinda just wish you were invited to, even me and I'm an introvert. I loved every second of this book and it ends on a cliffhanger which kills me, I'm already dying for the next and I might be willing to make a faery deal to get my hands on it.

I'm not sure what I just read, it felt like two entirely different books. The first half (probably more than 50%) we have a shy girl dealing my with health and family problems falling in love with her best friends body guard. While reading this I seriously went back and read the blurb because there really wasn't any paranormal and there wasn't really any romance with the rockstars. Then she goes through "transition" which is not well explained and turns into a fairy with completely different love interests. It was overall a very weird and confusing read. And to further this confusion the epilogue once again takes the book into another direction. Probably needed some beta readers and some major idea editing.

Two stars for some great photography info and some spots of lyrical prose.

Negative three stars for...everything else.

I DNFed it at like 24 percent. The band members are just...offensively gross and not attractive at all. The main character acts like she is in a mental fog all the time. I don’t understand why she is at this concert or whatever and I don’t understand why they are taking pics of orgies and stuff why is that relevant or necessary? I’m so confused. The only character I liked was the body guard but then he laced her coffee with some kind of drug without her knowing. Not cool.

TL;DR : 3 stars because the book was confusing as hell after the FMC's transition, which was pretty early in the book to my knowledge. You have random stuff being thrown at you from all directions, so brace yourselves.

The following rant/review is copied and pasted from when I shared my thoughts with the friend who recommended it to me. It is a mess, quite similar to how the actual book felt to me. Might contain spoilers, I'm not sure as I do not remember enough of the plot. I will probably do a re-read in the future so I can write a proper review.

!Chaotic Review Warning!

As much as I HATE to admit it, if there was ever a series that made me feel 'omg I really shouldn't be reading this for my age', this was it. And it wasn't even that bad! Like we both know I've read much much darker reads. It was... really twisted. Like she really needs to check if something is wrong with her libido. Eight?! Like for real? Like I've read books with seven guys so the number isn't that much of a matter probably but she's getting attracted to literally every single guy she meets. Every. single. one. Only the cat guy is mildly interesting since everyone else is scared of him. I half hope he'll scare everyone else away and keep Kira for himself.

I thought it'll only be the Changelings. They in themselves are five. And then there is bodygaurd Mark. And then the fashion designer or whatever Marlow. And then Jen's daddy Dave. And then cat Aen. Oh that's nine now. And then possibly that Duke Franklin or something from House Jonathan. Gods no. Like, girl needs to get out of the heat and clear her head. If she doesn't get her priorities straight even after that, I don't know. I'll be damn disappointed. Like she needs to set some ground rules and tell all the other to- pardon my French- back the fuck off and leave her alone. She will bang who she likes. End of story. No one is gonna be owning her. Like she's arm candy.

Like the Changelings have even started spouting love bullshit. In the first book! They like her for her it seems. They haven't even met her beforehand. Like it was only sex dreams she had. I really don't like the Changelings. Nope. Johnny or whatever he was was acting all kind like he and Kira had known each other for a long time and gone through a lot of shit together but in reality, they hadn't. I don't think Kira had heart-to-heart conversations with them in their dreams, did she? Like why is everyone so over-protective over this girl? Special Snowflake much? We get it, she's powerful (something they better prove with a really spectacular display of power) and hot but surely, there must be other women out there? And if everyone is bargaining and fighting over a woman, shouldn't she be placed above them? Till what I saw, she was being sold like a prostitute. She didn't seem to be getting any choice in selecting a guy she wanted and it didn't look it really mattered who she chose. But of course she wanted them all so she's being no help.

Buuuuuuutttt... as much as I want to run back to the familiar safety of my Seelie and Unseelie Courts, I still want to see where all this is going. I've never been one for politics but I might make an exception in this case. It better be worth it.

They literally know nothing about her except her passion for photography and they still apparently care about her well-being. And I've never read the 'daddy' type romances before and I'm not about to start right now.

Marlow and Aen were the only decent guys with Marlow helping her and Aen being all mysterious and stuff. And I think the writing also got really clustered after her transition and things were literally being thrown on my face. It was like the author wanted to give us all the info so she just threw it all out there like she couldn't make up her mind on what to write and so the relationship with the guys also took a hit and the whole thing was just one big biiig mess. A hot mess, but a mess nonetheless.

Kira is a very sad little mouse. She has no self esteem, suffers from debilitating headaches, has the stereotypical, richer, prettier best friend and a set of parents that do not understand her nor support her while suffocating her with their constant ‘care’.

Finally getting the big break she truly deserves – Jen (the best friend) gets her a job as the photographer for her favourite band. But things are not as they seem. These boys are a little too much and all the people around them are a little too interested in Kira. And then things change. Kira was this magical creature all along and now she has this whole new world that she needs to learn to cope with along with all these really hot if incredibly assholish (yes it is a word – read the book and you will understand how much of a word it is) men that are all demanding her attention.

Throw in a shapeshifting cat, a really hot under the collar sentinel and a crazy granny and you have a story that is to die for.

I have been a fan of Sam Hall since I started reading the Pack Heat series and this book has only increased my love of her work. She is an absolute genius.

Kira starts off as this really frumpy character and you cannot help but feel sorry for her – and then fall really in love with her when she comes into herself. Then you have the men (and boys) that are fighting for her affections and attentions. The stylist, The shape shifter, The sentinel – and to start off with – The drummer.

I really loved this and cannot wait to fall into the next book, and the one thereafter. And luckily for us number 4 will be coming out on January 9!

No sleep

Once again Sam Hall makes me lose a night of sleep with her (I’m beginning to think fae magicked) stories. I think, “oh I’ll just start this book” and suddenly it’s almost 4 in the morning.
This book is all about the sexual tension!! I began this book thinking I knew who the harem was going to be and now I’m ending it worried that they aren’t a part of the harem but also freaking excited over the other potential harem—my brain is so fried that I feel like Kira during one of her turns! So much is thrown at Kira during this book and I love that she doesn’t let them railroad her (okay, maybe I want them to railroad her, but in a different way lol) and force her to make rash, life long decisions on a dime. She actually takes a minute to think things through and it really gave the characters some realistic quality and made her more relatable as opposed to being just a book character on a wild adventure. I love the back and forth we get in her inner monologue because it really shows how confusing such a time would be and traumatizing, as she is thrust into a world where she doesn’t even understand her own body, let alone the rules, customs, and politics at play. And boy are there a lot of politics. Is it really a fae book without a complicated web of political intrigue and intricate riddled truths woven into complex illusions and lies?? Sam Hall delivers this in spades! I’ve already got book 2 lined up because I want to just dive back into this world and get taken away with faeries again..

It’s safe to say this is my new favourite Sam Hall book!

I don’t particularly read too much fae books so I’m not sure what’s common and what’s not in regards to them so this was new to me compared to what I have read of fae.

New and innovative. I enjoyed the prolonged reveal of the paranormal. There were mentions of humanoid creatures so I’m very intrigued about what they are if there are mentions in the next book. After reading ‘The Pack Heat Series’ I’ve notice Sam has a tendency to leave you dangling at your finger tips with her micro breadcrumbs she leaves us which lead to a cliffy that just makes you lose your mind but like a junkie you can help but keep coming back for more. And I think that’s what I enjoy most with her writing, is she really knows how you captivate her audience and keep them ensnared it her literary trap.

Her characters were well written in this one. Can definitely differentiate between them all. See the balance of their personalities and what they bring but also her out the gate characters such as Aen just keeps you guessing what she comes up with. Can definitely relate in some ways to the main character which gave it new life for me. Made me help understand her more. Her transition seemed a little abrupt for me personality wise but towards the end I could see some of her previous temperament which was good.

Such a vivid world build which I love. My hometown, which is where I live again now is Gisborne so it was exciting but trippy for me to read that in a book even with the added u in the name. I’ve never seen that ever and it made a connection for me with this book which I enjoyed. So much detailing went into this book which you can clearly see when reading which made the book feel alive.

This book had it all for me, a detailed and well planned out plot with great characters, steam, anticipation, suspense, mystery, I simply want more! A paranormal action scene and it would be golden but that didn’t deter from it it anyway.

Falling Down the Rabbit Hole

Baby writer my ass! Author, Sam Hall, is anything but that. This is the second series of hers that I have begun (Pack Heat being the first) and can I just say, "Damn, girl!"! Really though, I just want to crawl up in her psyche and roll around in it, discover all the hidden places cuz she has this ability to suck you into her story and the rest of reality just drops away. Vanishes. Proof. When you get to the end and come up for air, it's like "WTAF just happened?" For a voracious reader like myself, that is like heaven, nirvana and Shangri-la all rolled into one. Alice falling down the rabbit hole has nothing on this experience and I can't wait to fall deep into the madness that is book two.

Just damn

I love her books. But found myself struggling the first few chapters but so glad I did because what a freaking ride. I don't know why I'm surprised because all of her books consume me and this one is no different. I devoured it. You get introduced to this world with Kira and you can tell its gonna be a ride. Can't freaking wait to explore it in the next book. Was sad when it ended and happy the next two are out. So excuse me while I skip slee ppl tonight and read book 2.

A seriously good read. The characters have been well developed, the world carefully crafted and the so far the plot well planned. The story mostly flowed well, although the conflict was a bit easy going, but I'm guessing and hoping it'll get a bit heavier in the next instalment.

Good start

Interesting start for the book series. I never read a faerie book like that. I guess it's a good thing. The world building was perfect and also the gues too. I have to say the story is progressing a lot slower than her usual books. But still enjoying the whole thing.

You ever read a series where you just fall into the storyline so hard that it's extremely jarring to realize it's not actually the world you live in? Then you think about it and realize it's eerily similar to the world you actually live in? Yeah, that's this series. From book 1 to book 4, I didn't stop reading except to sleep a bit. Now, in my book hangover, I'm sitting here, wanting my next fix of book 5. I don't just recommend this series, I'd tie you down in front of a kindle, only allow you to use a finger to turn the pages and give you the safe word rocks... But I bet ya don't use it.

Away with the fairies

A 3+ star book. I enjoyed it. What I have issues with is the band supposedly all into Kiara but sexing groupies in front of her. I cant get over that part. I really like the author so I'm going to be reading the next book.

Sam Hall has done it again!
Kira is wonderfully developed and her interactions with the Fae as she learns more of their world keeps the reader engaged throughout the book. This is the first book in this series, so we are left with a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait for the next installment.

Really Enjoyed This Book

A lot of books I read, although I enjoy them, are fairly predictable. This one kept me guessing. It was a totally different plot line than anything I have read before and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Absolutely in love with this series. Author Sam Hall is seriously becoming my new favorite author. Story sucks you right in. Love the characters and storyline. Really looking forward to reading the next book. Definitely a must read
