A Practical Libertarian: A Roadmap to Recovering Liberty

Rate this book
Fierce independence and a 'leave me alone' attitude define the modern Libertarian and party. This does not make for good politics where coordination and national momentum is crucial. This book outlines a practical libertarianism that can coexist with the two other national parties. We can find a common, central philosophy that will capture the drive of an election-winning majority of 'We the People'.

Wonderful read. Author should be proud of the way he thinks and writes. A true practical libertarian without a note of radicalism.

The book is really concise which makes it perfect for recommending it to close friends and family, yet it covers most important issues of government intervention into personal life: private property, private life, taxes, social security, gun control, immigration, and so on.

Author describes ways of gradual move-away from current intrusive government models and institutes to individual and safety oriented government with free market.

At this point, I think US needs to get a taste of socialism in upcoming years to actually understand its strong and weak points so that it could later rediscover its libertarian values. The demand for socialism is at its peak, I doubt it'll go away anytime soon.

With all that in mind, I think this book will be one of the foundational stones in upcoming practical libertarian movement after few (dozens of?) years of a socialism-oriented government.

As I was reading this book I kept on thinking about the title and context of a book I had read about 50 yrs ago by William Lederer “A Nation of Sheep,” which profoundly influenced my way of thinking about many things, things I hadn’t thought about in years, until, I read James Tall’s book. Both of these books touch on important matters which humankind need to re-evaluate and act on now. Even though, “A Nation of Sheep,” occurs in a different time span with different situations its ideals are still as relevant in our time as they were 50+ years ago. “A Practical Libertarian,” is set in our time and now, more than ever, it is needed to remind us that we are only “A Nation of Sheep” if we do nothing to change it! I highly recommend that everyone pick up this book and see for themselves.

Interesting

I was a Libertarian, long before I realized I was. It wasn't until I read some of their literature, that I agreed with their basis tenets. This writer identified problems we have as a government and a society and offered reasonable solutions. He also confined that I am a Libertarian.
