They’ve lived in the woods and cornfields for too long. Now they’re out, killing anyone that crosses their paths. The town of Doverton has been nearly wiped out, due to the army of small, humanoid creatures with sharp teeth and bloodthirsty appetites. Those who have yet to be added to the creatures’ menu live in fear and seclusion.
But that is about to change with the arrival of three psychopaths on the run from a bloodbath they left behind in North Carolina. Pillowface, Buddy, and Carp are looking for a quiet place to hide, a place to recharge and heal so they can kill again. Little do they know, another form of monster is waiting for them, ready to give them their biggest challenge to date. Though they are an army of three, the tribe of ancient creatures known as the Haunchies, have never faced such a deadly threat.
The fight will be bloody. Many will die. And those caught in the middle of this war will be lucky to survive.

An interesting mash up of the Pillowface and Haunchies stories. It was cool to revisit the characters while getting a brand new story at the same time. While this isn't quite as strong as it's predecessors, still a great entry for both series. I especially enjoyed the Bree and Pillowface storyline.
I wasn't crazy about this book. It is easily the least of the Lurkers series. The characters made unrealistic decisions. There are myriad enormous leaps in logic. Alot of it felt like a rehash of the previous Lurkers novels and "Pillowface". The fact that most of the book treats Pillowface, Buddy and Carp, a vicious band of serial killers, as the protagonists really didn't work for me. I found it to be uninteresting reading endless scenes of the bad guys versus the bad guys versus the bad guy, ie: Piper (the serial killer sheriff from the previous Lurkers books). There are protagonists, Bree and Teresa, but they are written more like innocent bystanders than people you want to root for and rally behind. All that said, the sheer amount of wild, crazy, insane carnage in this book at least makes it enjoyable for hardcore horror fans. It is so completely tasteless that there is some enjoyment to be found, sort of in the same way that you might enjoy a bad B horror movie. Think more along the lines of classic Troma. Gross for the sake of gross, with zero redeeming qualities. If you are a sucker for the novels of Richard Laymon and the like, and bad, low budget horror movies, you might have some fun with this. If you don't have a stomach for such pulp, steer clear.
If you haven’t read anything by Kristopher Rufty before, then you need to know that his work is generally not for the faint of heart. It is explicit and gloriously violent in vibrant Technicolor. His work is in the vein of Richard Laymon, and that is high praise. it pulls no punches, makes vile beings sympathetic, is funny and devastating, and the stories grab you at page one and don’t let go until the last page. This particular book is a face off of Big Bads from earlier books, and you probably should read those books first to fully appreciate this story. Actually, you should read them because they are damn fine books. Anyway, Mr. Rufty advises us that this takes place after his books Lurkers and then Pillowface. Highly recommended.
A very strong story for fans of both the Lurkers and Pillowface novels! Hell Departed combines elements from both stories and doesn’t try to fix something that isn’t broken. It was cool to see similar characters cross paths and the action in this one is nonstop.
