Delphyne Shadow is Solomon's ex-girlfriend from hell--literally. At Halloween, she returns for his soul. Back in 1979, when Solomon Zuch and Delphyne Shea were in high school, they shared an intense, romantic liaison on Halloween night. It became one of Solomon's most treasured memories. Twenty years later, Solomon is the married manager of The All Hallows' Eve Shoppe, a pop-up store that reopens every year to sell Halloween supplies to customers in north Columbus, Ohio. Delphyne Shadow, as she is now popularly known, calls herself the Madonna of the Underworld, and every year she hosts the most infamous Halloween party in town, The Nightmare Bash. At the end of the millennium, Delphyne plans the most outrageous Nightmare Bash ever. Unexpectedly, she comes back into Solomon's life, making a "business proposition" too good to be true - together, they will co-host the Nightmare Bash, right inside The All Hallows' Eve Shoppe. But Regina, Solomon's wife, a psychic healer, knows that Delphyne has hidden motives. Only she can protect Solomon from his former lover's sinister plan to steal his soul... if her powers are strong enough . "Johnny Appleseed told many a tale about his life and times. He would've liked this book..." Howard Means, author "Johnny Appleseed."
A native of Columbus, Ohio, I've crafted a peripatetic career as a librarian, editor, college teacher, and academic administrator. In my career in higher education, I have authored some 60 academic articles, four monographs, 300-some reviews, and served as editor of five professional journals.
I have master degrees in library science from the University of Washington and adult education from Montana State University. Among my jobs were positions at Idaho State University, University of Miami (FL), University at Albany (SUNY), and the Evergreen State College in Washington.
Back in the 1980's and 90's, I wrote some poems and short stories that appeared in various small literary arts journals (does anybody remember The Redneck Review of Literature?). For my 50th birthday present to myself, I decided to resume creative writing.
Hence, I was thrilled when my first novel, Dollarapalooza -- or -- The Day Peace Broke Out in Columbus, was published by Switchgrass Books of Northern Illinois University Press in May, 2011. Since then, happily, I've published several short stories, some poetry, and humor in journals such as Marathon Review, Zodiac Review, Waypoints, Semaphore, Imaginaire, and been a frequent contributor to Midwestern Gothic.
My second novel, Fresh News Straight from Heaven, is based upon the true mythology of the American folk hero, John
As someone who enjoys reading and writing fiction, I am always appreciative of authors who can take historical references and characterizations which are well researched and incorporated into their own fantasy world. At times this works quite well, but there have been numerous books and short stories that failed to achieve what Gregg Sapp did.
The overall arch of the story was a bit of a roller-coster. It definitely grabs your attention from the very first sentence (Halloween 1979), which immediately leads me to Michael Myers and the Halloween movie franchise which also began in 1978 or 1979. I believe the author did this on purpose - but perhaps that's just my mind being wired that way. I cannot say the book is perfect - I do think certain parts in the middle of the book were a bit extended beyond their purpose - but the ending and climax were quite satisfying.
P.s. Overall the writing was crisp and intelligent. I recommend you to pick it up as a casual reading, whether you're staying at home or somewhere off during your vacation between September and February. Also, as I picked up the first book, I immediately realized that book 2 was already published - so perhaps the details I found less exciting in book 1 have a purpose in the sequel.
