Der zweite Band von Lukas Kummers hochgelobter Graphic Novel nach Thomas Bernhards „Autobiographischen Schriften".
Im zweiten Band der Autobiographischen Schriften beschließt der Schüler Thomas Bernhard, sich seinem Leben zu entziehen. Statt weiterhin die Schule zu besuchen, findet er im Keller einer Lebensmittelhandlung am Rande der verhassten Stadt, im Wohngetto der Besitzlosen und Kriminellen, eine Lehrstelle. Er lernt dort die von der Gesellschaft Ausgestoßenen kennen, denen er sich nahe fühlt, und er lernt erstmals, was es heißt, angenommen zu werden und „nützlich“ zu sein. Der Alltag im „Keller“ erweist sich als heilsam, die „Vorhölle“ wird zur „Zuflucht“, bis eine schwere Krankheit Bernhards Lehre ein jähes Ende setzt. Für den Ton des Autors findet Lukas Kummer hier eine aufgelockerte Bildsprache. Er begleitet Thomas Bernhard mit präzisem Strich durch diese vielleicht hellste Zeit seiner Jugend.

Wow, that was terrible! I don't have much experience with graphic novel adaptations of autobiographical novels apart from the one of Remembrance of Things Past, but the difference between that one and this is indescribable.
I can't say much about the source material because I haven't read it, but the way the sentences just go on and on and on and on without end makes me suspect it's a pretty direct adaptation of something I should be staying far away from. As for the graphic side of things, I thought the drawing style crude; often I couldn't even recognise what it was supposed to be, and that's if I bothered to look at it at all, because there are no speech bubbles to draw the reader's attention to the picture, only blocks of prose on top of each box. I ended up ditching the illustrations halfway through the book and just reading the text.
I don't recommend, but if you desperately want to read a graphic novel adaptation of something, go with Proust; even he is easier to read than this mess.

Kongeniale - nicht ganz so überzeugend wie "Die Ursache" - Übertragung des autobiografischen Sprachkunstwerks in eine Graphic Novel.

December 26, 2021Teil 2. Ein düsterer Text. Die Bilder spiegeln die sich wiederholenden Sätze perfekt wieder, ein Zusammenspiel von Wort und Bild, sehr gelungen.
