Chef Jake Casey has never been what you’d call… liked. By anyone. He was the odd outcast son of the town drunk, and he’s spent his adult life doing everything he can to be nothing like his father. If that meant stomping on a few dozen toes, so be it. But contrary to popular belief, he is human. It gets a little old being alone all the time. When he lands a new job on the other side of the country, Jake decides he’s going to change. New city, new restaurant, new Jake.
It’s going pretty well until his first and only friend’s ex shows up with a fiancé in tow. Ty is horrified. Jake might not have much practice with the friend thing, but he decides he’ll do what everyone in the movies always does – he offers to be Ty’s fake boyfriend. It can’t go wrong. Right?
Ty Caldecott knows better. His life isn’t a teen rom-com and situations like these always end up in humiliation. But the prospect of seeing Taran every day with that ring shining on his finger makes Ty want to vomit. Ty doesn’t want to look like a pining loser, so he tells Jake he’s in.
MJ O’Shea has never met a music festival, paintbrush, or flower crown she can stay away from. She loves rainstorms and a perfect cup of tea, beach days, music, bright colors, and more than anything a cozy evening with a really great book.
She is from the Pacific Northwest. While she still lives there and loves it, MJ has the heart of a wanderer. So she puts all her dreams of far off places and extraordinary people in her books.
Except for every once in a while when she does what all travelers have to do on occasion… come home.
Ummmm. I don’t know what happened with this book? But...something certainly did. And...it wasn’t so hot.
Started off pretty good... Kinda stalled out... And then took a nosedive.
I’m going to try and keep this short.... I struggled to connect with both Jake and Ty. I wouldn’t even consider this in the “fake boyfriend” trope. Cuz they didn’t FAKE anything. And the ex flying in and destroying everything only ticked me off. For a couple of chefs opening a restaurant, I was never “hungry” in this book. Or even for this book. They lost out on a “potential”, not anything that had substance. And then the ending? #angry Guess it might be considered HFN but I think it was maddening.
1/2 a ⭐️ for the rest of the gang. rounded up for the Vermont guys.
Chef on Top is the third book in the Sizzling in the Kitchen series. When it was offered to us for review, we were told it can be read as a standalone, however I feel that it is likely better enjoyed when read in sequence.
For me, this story was a miss and messy. Jake seems like a great guy in this story—his previous history is entirely omitted and we only have his reflection on how he did live to make us think he could have been a Class A jerk. It’s clear that his interpersonal skills are stunted, but that could have mostly been due to shyness, from what I read. Ty’s relationship failed around three years ago, and he behaves like a kid with the whole fake boyfriend thing. I read a lot of fake boyfriend romance, and this was such a thin veneer, and positioned so late in the story, that it felt tacked on. The story seems really light on context for the romance. I liked the scene building and all, with the locale and personnel, but I would have rather had the romance on the page, instead of all the angst.
2.55 stars I really enjoyed the first two books of the series, but the MC in this one was such a jerk in those that I wasn't sure if I could like his story. Turns out, he wasn't the problem. The editing had problems I've never seen before. Random words are capitalized as if this were written in the early 19th Century, while the beginning of sentences are obviously channeling e.e. cummings. There also seemed to be...a special pricing...on ellipsis. I was able to ignore most of it, until the ending of the story, which was...a little abrupt.
The third in what has been a delicious series (food pun intended), this story did not live up to its promise. Jake Casey is a snarky, nasty character in the first two books—a brilliant chef but with an abrasive personality and a huge ego. He’s responsible for booting Baldwin from his prestigious job at the restaurant in New York and he’s Bobby’s nemesis as well. This story opens as book two ended with Jake accepting the position of head chef at the new Hearth & Oak restaurant opening at the Empress in Las Vegas. But that’s where the similarity to the previous books ends.
We meet a Jake in this book who is lonely and decides to be the kind of guy people like. He wants friends and he wants a harmonious workplace. This is a complete 180 from the Jake we know. I was looking forward to seeing the feisty chef meet his match in a romantic push and pull sort of relationship. I hoped for a guy who wouldn’t take his backtalk and would give as good as he gets. And then there’d be a situation that would make Jake realize he needed to soften. But no, not in this book. There was no catalyst for Jake’s change, no major catastrophe or loss of family or friends. He just grew introspective and decided to change. To be honest, it was unbelievable. As my mother always said: tigers don’t change their stripes, but in this case, Jake became a cuddly kitten.
We also meet Ty, a really great character who has worked for the Food TV crew from Baldwin’s show and has training in both management and as a chef. He’s assigned to be the restaurant manager in Vegas until the place is up and running. Do the two clash? No. Do the two fall in love? Not really. They do become friends and eventually Jake offers to be Ty’s fake boyfriend when his former fiancé shows up as the sommelier for the hotel. Love comes much later—at the very end of the book.
The first half is all about setting up a restaurant and Jake’s acclimation to his home and to life in Las Vegas and reads somewhat like a travelogue of the Vegas area and a restaurant handbook. There’s not even a short kiss between the two characters until 50% in. And, in fact, there’s never really more than that. There is a big Misunderstanding just before Ty leaves to go back to New York and then… The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. I won’t say what happens or doesn’t happen. I’m not sure if a chapter is missing or if that’s how the book was to end. Honestly? I’m surprised at how this was left, especially given that this is the third book, and possibly the last of the series.
So, no. This one is not on my recommended reads list.
Well damn! This story was a hard 4 stars for me until that ending. It was so abrupt I went back just to make sure my Kindle didn't do something stupid like sending me an ebook with a chapter missing. Yeah, I feel like I'm left hanging even though the guys make up and are together. I think this one could have really used an epilogue but maybe that's just me.
QUICK THOUGHTS -- Quick easy read -- Chef/Restaurant Manager pairing -- combatants to friends to lovers -- fake boyfriends -- extremely slow burn -- coming face to face with your ex-fiance -- ruining a really good thing -- I felt for Jake and was so angry at Ty -- loved the MCs -- forgave too quickly -- needed more groveling -- ending way too abrupt -- wish this had an epilogue -- overall I still enjoyed this one
Firstly let me say I’ve got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review. This is the third book in the series and this is by far my favourite book so far. We get to know more about Casey the chef that has been following around chef Baldwin and if honest nobody has really got on with him. After Casey had bought a restaurant down the road from where Baldwin had started a new life with his husband Murphy, Baldwin came up with a brilliant idea how to get rid of him in his every day life. The TV show that Baldwin was on wanted to open a new restaurant in Las Vegas but Baldwin didn’t want to be there he was happy with the restaurant that he, Murphy and Bobby were running. So he came up with the idea of sending Casey there. Casey is a complex character and I am so glad that we got to know him more in this book. He hasn’t had an easy life and he worked hard to get to where he is today. When he goes to Las Vegas He wants to have a totally new start. stop being a grumpy big headed jerk that no one wants to work with. And he asked the help of Ty. He was part of the production team that helped with Baldwin show . Ty help in making recipes and he was going to be the manager of the restaurant until they can find somebody to take over permanently. When these two started to talk something just clicked and they get on like a house on fire. Really good friends but when Tys Ex fiance ends up working at the hotel that the restaurant is in , it Throws Ty through the ringer. Casey comes up with the idea to be his pretend boyfriend so he wouldn’t look like a loser. Yeah you see where this is going and I can tell you now when they finally realise their feelings for one another it’s just pure magic they get on like a house on fire but as always something is thrown in and disrupts everything. But can they make it back together?? I thoroughly enjoyed this book I just got pulled into their relationship their friendship and seeing a different side of Casey from the one that we had heard about from other characters in previous books. I really good read looking forward to the next and last book in the series
Wow!!! I was not expecting to like Chef Jake Casey after reading the first 2 books in the Sizzle in the Kitchen series! Chef Jake was definitely a villain so I had started reading the 3rd book with expectation that I wasn’t going to like it. Boy, was I WRONG!!!! I liked him more. Go figure! It was a real good read! I still stand behind my statement that this series should be made into a gay Hallmarkesque TV movie series! This book can be a standalone but it’s always recommended to read the stories in correct sequence so you know who the characters are and their impact in each books.
This story focuses on Chef Jake Casey who was asked by his rival Chef, Baldwin to run a brand new restaurant in Las Vegas. He decided to take the job since it would get him away from the “small town” feeling which he didn’t really like due to a part of his past that he would like to forget about. In the new picture, comes Ty, who took the general manager job to help get the restaurant started. Before that, he was the one who would develop recipes for Chef Baldwin’s TV show. He was assigned to help run the restaurant temporarily. While he was in Las Vegas, he came face to face to his ex who he wanted to forget he was ever with. However, the ex had a ring which caused Ty to accept Chef Jake’s offer to be his fake boyfriend. Is that plan headed for disaster? Pick up the book and find out what happens! A great read for me!
After reading the other books in this series I was fully expecting Jake to be a giant jerk, but he really redeemed himself in Vegas. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly both Jake and Ty wormed their way into my heart, and I had a lot of fun watching them build up the restaurant and get to know each other. Honestly, this book didn't feel like a romance until well past the 50% mark, and I liked the story better when it was more focused on Ty and Jake than any weird ex-fiances and fake boyfriend plots. If this had just been a slow-burn romance between two new friends, it would have been a 5 star read, but instead all the added drama left me feeling uncertain about Jake and Ty's future. Despite their heartfelt reunion at the end, I don't know if I believe they'll make it as a couple, and nothing about the last chapter provided any closure for me. I believe Ty and Jake love each other deeply, but once again I was left wanting more than vague assurances before letting their story end.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
This book really kept me entertained. Both Jake and Ty really wormed their way into my heart. It was so much fun to watch them build this relationship. It started out as a fake relationship but we all know that fake relationships don’t always stay that way. Ty’s ex shows up with a fiancé in tow and Jake offers to be Ty’s fake boyfriend so Ty can put on a brave face in from of his ex. Ty decides to go along with because why not? What could go wrong? But of course these men catch feelings for one another and soon realize that what they have is truly a beautiful thing. Watching these men fall in love was amazing and I’m really enjoying this series so far! I’m looking forward to diving right in to the next one!
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
POV: 3rd Person Dual POV
Standalone or series: Book 3 in the Sizzle in the Kitchen series
Would I recommend it: 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ definitely recommend!! 🤩
This was a rather quick read. While it is a series, I don’t think it needs to be read all in order. However, it would definitely help keep track of all the characters. The character Jack Casey has a bad reputation because of his seemingly brash and aloof manner. Yet, really that was all covering a wounded man who was trying so hard to fit in. It takes him moving to Vegas to be a different version of himself—a version more open to being vulnerable.
In saying that, I did like that Ty and him developed a close friendship that turned into more. Not sure about the whole Taran situation, but I felt for Jake. I kind of wish Ty groveled a bit more. The ending felt rushed as well. All in all, Jake and Ty finally had their HFN.
*ARC provided by Gay Romance Reviews, and I have given my honest and voluntary review.*
Love isn't like an on/off switch. Jake, grew up trying to live beyond his Dad's reputation. He was not always graceful in his attempt to be not as bad. He relocates, and uses that as a time to try to reinvent himself. He steps up and out of his comfort zone and tries to support his only friend, Ty out of an emotional romantic quandary caused by an ex. They entered into a new phase of their friendship that grew on rocky surfaces with lots of dips and missteps. They are nothing alike, but they fit. The story could have benefitted with more time spent on Ty and Jake because they developed into really nice guys. This is a good story with likeable characters. The flow was a bit choppy, but the characters and conflicts kept us enthralled. Does Ty fool his ex? Do Ty and Jake have the 'talk'? Good story, nicely done. I recevied an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed the character of Jake so much. He is quite self aware and knows that people don't like him and why so when he takes the new job he decides to change that. It isn't easy, but he makes a good friend in Ty and I enjoyed the early parts of the book where they work to build the restaurant and their friendship. It was interesting the way the fake boyfriend trope was worked into the story and I enjoyed watching the romance become real and the bit of angst at the end before these two get their HFN.
Same issues as the first two in regards to style and pacing, with the added meh of a "fake relationship" trope that felt a bit lazy and forced. I also felt like the author really wasn't very consistent with Jake in the three books--I get he's turned over a new leaf but we literally don't see *any* signs of his previous asshole self which didn't feel super realistic. But I did generally enjoy the characters and I found the conclusion much more satisfying than the previous book.
I loved the first book in the series. I have loved seeing Murph and Baldwin returning in this book and the one previous, but this book felt flat amd left me disappointed. The storyline jumped weeks, which to be fair needed to happen, but I honestly wasnt invested in Ty... despite a majority of the story being about his previous breakup. Even Jakes backstory is barely a mention within this book. Then it literally ends outta nowhere, eith Ty and Jake feeling barely resolvedm
Jake has had a rough life but he decided long ago he was gonna be better than his past, unfortunately sometimes that made him feel unlikable! Jake gets a fresh start and meets someone amazing but what starts out as fake turns into something so much more real! Ty loves Jake so much but he makes a big mistake & hurts Jake so bad! In the end this guys work things out and they get their happy ending! Can’t wait for the next book! 😀❤️😀❤️
Jake Casey was the "big bad" during the first two books, and I did a fair amount of side-eyeing whenever he showed up on the page. But this story was so good that he was totally rehabbed. It is hard not to pull for a man who realizes his mistake and puts in the work to change. And Ty is the perfect match for him. Even though this is a slow burn I enjoyed reading about this friendship and Hearth & Oak: Las Vegas come to life.
Joining its predecessors this book takes you on the journey of Jake and Ty as they work at Hearth&Oak. I enjoyed seeing past relationships, past characters who are still sizzling. I liked that we find out who Jake really is and why, he’s a good character. Their relationship and their story was enjoyable to follow. This book, as the others before it, has a nice HeA as the story closes. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.
A foundation was built and they became great friends. How they missed the sparks, I don't know. When Ty's ex winds up on the scene things get bad for Ty and Jake does TBE one thing he can think of to help Ty out by being his fake boyfriend. Its just not fake at all as the each have growing feelings for each other. They really are in love but now live on the opposite sides of the country. How will it ever work? This ending leaves that question hanging in the air.
I didn’t see me liking Jake so soon but I did. In fact I loved everything about Jake and Ty’s friendship. I even liked there changing feelings. It was the last bits I didn’t care for. I couldn’t see Ty saying what he did to Taran. And the ending bummed me out. I hope we get some more on them.
MM, Fake Relationship, Friends to Lovers, Contemporary, Romance. Easy to read page-turner with great characters, this is the third book in the series but I think it could be read as a stand-alone with no loss of enjoyment. I thoroughly enjoyed reading their story and watching their relationship evolve. Guaranteed HEA.
Another chef-themed storyline, filled with kitchen toils and strife, and laced throughout with emotional threads which finally, eventually, coalesce into a relationship. It was an interesting journey, part fake boyfriend, part enemies to lovers. Ends on a promise for the future.
Theses series just gets better and better. Loved this story. The storyline was interesting and the characters through they had very bad moments are perfect together and I was happy they got a great ending to there story. On to book four.
Chef on Top, Sizzle in the Kitchen book three by M.J.O’Shea. Another great book in a great series. Loved the storyline, could have read a lot more about Ty & Jake great characters! Can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
AWESOME!!! Every time I read a book in this series I think it can’t get any better—but I get proven wrong every time! Ty & Jake’s story is one of reinventing oneself, second chances, & true love winning! I love how O’Shea writes each of these stories and definitely can’t wait for the next!
This was a quick easy read that. It was kind of a hit and miss for me. I struggled to like Jake and Ty as a couple. They fell kind of flat. The fake boyfriend troupe is usually a favorite of mine but this one felt off, no chemistry. Overall, an ok read.
He has stepped on a few toes to get where he is and to be better than his father. He is also tired about being alone all the time. He is about to meet his best friend ex again. Soon a fake engagement is on the cards but will it stay fake? See if it will
Such a great turn around for Jake. Ty is the most perfect person for him. Of course there is a big hurdle at one point but I loved this story, such a great series. “I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.”
This was a cute quick read. The story was good and I loved the characters although I wasn’t sure about Jake at first but he turned out pretty good! Very entertaining and I enjoyed it! I am voluntarily leaving an honest review for this complimentary copy of this book
