(1) very intriguing setting and beginning for an urban legend style of short stories collection, but there is just no explanation or even an attempt at explaining any of the strange happenings in this monstrous household, how disappointing!

(2) the spooky stuff is well written, though!

(3) but...but why would you want to spend the night in a freaking haunted house!?

Holy moly never been so terrified before reading a horror book. The premise is that there's a rich and insane billionaire who relocates haunted houses and gathers them into a village. 4 supernatural tales are related, and the first one spooked me so much. Is it truly supernatural? Or a desperate mother's spiral into lunacy? I reread the last bits of her diary 3 times. It's intentional to terrify the reader, by having unreliable narrators, diary format, revealing bits and bits that connect all 4 stories, and finally, the supernatural happenings as the author is reading the material. As if that's not enough, they break the fourth wall by speaking to the reader (us) - if you encounter any spooky happenings, stop reading. In fact, the author repeatedly warns the reader to stop reading further. This is guaranteed to make you scream like a baby when a family member speaks to you from outside the bathroom, or a light flickers (true story). The ending was actually quite good, this is one of Shinzo Mitsuda's best books. The 4 houses are arranged In a circle, with the medium living in the inner courtyard. The only gripe I have is that the pear shaped lady is like a marionette repeating words, even pressing closer to them (At the reception! Hovering at ground floor! Pressing closer to the elevator! But she conveniently disappears at the end when the author puts forward a daring hypothesis without basis.
