4.5 stars
I don’t know how to review this book because even though it did something that didn’t care for, I still adored the meat of the storyline along with the characters of Aaron and Gwynn. There was just a lot to love that if the thing I didn’t like wasn’t in here then I would have given this a five stars. It was that good.
The story started off with a bang with Gwynn’s father wanted to sell Gwynn to a loan shark to cover his gambling debts. The way it was written it gave that very creepy yet sleezy vibe that reflected the entire situation that Gwynn had got into with her father. Just feeling her pain and hurt over her father doing this to her after he disappointed her all her life was very heartbreaking to witness.
But what added to this setup was the fact that Aaron was the fact that he worked for this criminal loan shark that was not happy about not getting his money back from Gwynn’s father. So, he set out for Aaron to hold Gwynn as collateral in Aaron’s cabin in the middle of the woods. What made it interesting though was fact the only reason that Aaron was working for this loan shark to get this piece of land that belonged to his people, which brought an even more complicated piece of the puzzle was the fact that he was a wolf. The fact that he felt was his responsibility to go after this land that sat on the pack’s land in order to hide from the outside world. So, he entered this criminally enterprise even though it made him sick his stomach especially since he was the enforcer of his people when he was with the wolves, who kicked him out of the pack when Aaron decided to go after this land. So, not only was his conflicted of what he was doing with this loan shark that held this land over his head, but also the fact that he was going to take Gwynn for collateral especially when he made a deal with the loan shark for the land for holding Gwynn.
There was a lot of conflict already before Gwynn and Aaron even met, but it got even more complicated when they officially met because Aaron not only kept it a secret that he worked for the loan shark, but that he was wolf. The entire time he went back and forth with himself of whether to tell her or whether not. How he should keep his distance between her and him. Yada. Yada.
But what great was how they built trust between them even during a short period time. Gwynn thought he was her rescuer after her father abandoned her on that cold mountain so she had to put her trust in him as he lead her to his cabin to safety. Then he took care of her once she entered his cabin and never stopped. There was just a connection and bond that lead that instant trust between them. As well attraction too.
The scene were he helped her get dry was so sensual and so sexy that it set the pages on fire. It was so hot as he peeled layers and layers away from her body the wrapped her into a blanket and rubbed her down to get that warmth in her body. Oh was so good. Such great built up of sexual tension between them that brought them closer and closer. When he held her tight in his arms to get more warmth in her system was beautiful, sexy and just utter perfection. I loved that scene so much and showed the chemistry that the two fo them had. It was a great start of the buildup between them.
Then the whole thing that I didn’t care for happened when the slept together for the first time. I thought it was going to take a little longer then when it actually happened. It happened a little soon to me. It gave me slight one night stand vibes to it, which was the trope I don’t care for. I just thought after the build up with the getting dry scene that would be carried throughout the story as they spent more and more time together. I wanted to see that sexual tension keep on growing and growing until they couldn’t stand it anymore, and they finally gave in. It just a little too quick for me. They were practically strangers, I just don’t like that personally..
But that love scene was scorching. It was very steamy and very sexy. It just added a level of intensity to their story that put it over the top. It showed off just how much chemistry that the truly had with one another. It was glorious. I loved even though I did think it was too soon.
The rest of their love scenes were just has hot and fiery as the first one. Yes, that did seem to be the crux of their relationship while they were in the cabin, but I also felt that with each time they came together it just intensified the wolf mating bond between Aaron and Gwynn. Because that the mating bond was set very early on in their relationship, there was instantaneous feeling for Aaron that he would do anything for her because he was his and no one else would do. He knew it as well as his wolf did.
There weren’t together long before she found out the truth of him working for the loan shark and that his job was to be her “holder” for a week until her father paid the debt. As soon as Gwynn found out then she reacted and felt like a fool for trusting him so she ran from him.
There were these moments when he went after her, and he came to her as a wolf that was both sweet yet heartbreaking. Those scene touched me so much. There was just so many emotions in that those scenes that it was very clear to see that he was invested in her and wanted a life with her. The first that was just so touching was when he cuddled with her as a wolf to keep her warm. They just that this really sweet snuggle moment that I absolutely loved and warmed my heart. The second moment was when he reveled to her that he was a wolf by turning into a wolf in front of her. When he did that he tried to nuzzle her hand, but she flicked away from him. HIs reaction to her reaction just broke my heart because he whined and had those puppy dogs that just broke me because I could see how much he pained him for her to react to him like that. It was just a stab in the heart. It made me feel so much. It was such amazing and powerful scene.
Things happened after that as she tried to decide whether she could trust him or not and whether she could deal with the whole thing and him being her mate. Things went quickly after that with some high stakes moments with smatterings of suspense that kept it really fast paced. I appreciated that adrenaline rush and kept me sucked into the story.
In terms of their relationship they moved pretty fast after that. There wasn’t a lot of relationship/emotional building between them, yet they were declaring their love for one another. Admittedly I thought that was too fast, and I think if they just admitted that they needed each other and wanted another that would have been enough for me, instead of the love declaring. It wasn’t that I didn’t believe it. It was just a little too soon. After all they had known each other a few days, yet they were in love, which was a little iffy in believability for me. However I could swallow it more because of the whole mating bond. If that wasn’t present, then I would have been very dissatisfied and wouldn’t have bought it at all.
I don’t think I did this book justice in my review because there were so many good feels I had while reading it. It had a lot of elements that I liked. The intensity was good. I liked the little bit of suspense/danger element to the story that added another level to the story. I loved Aaron because even though he was working for a bad guy, he was actually good guy. I liked seeing his struggle and conflict that he had not only with Gwynn but his pack as well. He was just trying to do the right thing in an unconventional way. He just felt so much deep inside that he refused to show on the outside until he met Gwynn. He felt lot of pain about being kicked of his pack when he was doing what he was doing for his pack. Seeing his reactions when she flicked away from him was just so heartbreaking and painful that I felt stabbed in my heart just like he was. I loved the wolf moments between him and Gwynn. I loved how the snuggled together both with Aaron being wolf and human. I loved seeing him take care of her. It was sexy. It was hot. They great sexy time moments that I really liked. They just had some really great moments together. Some things did happen a little quickly for my liking, but I could over more in this story than I could if it happened in other stories. Partly that was due to the fact of the wolf mating bond that accelerated things between them to supersonic level. So, that was the only reason that I gave this a four and half stars, instead of a five stars. Everything else I loved because it just gave me all feels that I was looking for. It was glorious.
