Fall in Vermont is lovely: beautiful leaves, cool days, slimy lake monsters, an evil unicorn…
Anaya came to Lake Champlain tracking a supernatural killer. The human she meets is a pleasant distraction, but could she be more than that? How much can Anaya trust herself, and her magic?
Tara wasn’t expecting to meet the woman of her dreams at her small library. She’s asexual for starters, which has made finding someone compatible harder. She’s okay with that: she has friends and a decent life.
But this woman really stands out. Tara knows she’s found a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and she’s not about to let that get away. Even if it means following a human-looking unicorn into the stranger depths of the backwoods.
The Loch Ness Monster has been devoured…can Anaya and Tara keep the Lake Champlain Monster from being next?
Anaya is a unicorn living in London. She'd been cast out from her unicorn realm years before, and grew lonely in the human world. One day, she feels a strong pull of magic and realizes that someone has killed Nessie, the Loch Ness monster. Her magic tells her that this person would next go after Champ, the lake monster of Lake Champlain in Vermont. She is the only other unicorn in the human realm, so it is up to her stop him.
I live in Vermont - it was so great to read things I recognized like town names and the landscape having a familiar feeling.
This book also had great LGBTQ representation, and that was so refreshing to read. I also loved the quirky character traits, like Champ having a great love of cheese.
Liminal Hearts took me somewhere I’ve never been before. It’s a fast read. Size-wise it slots between a novel and novella, and it was a good flying companion during my last trip. I was curious how unicorns might exist in and around human society and how their powers could be used for good and evil, and Sculdenfrei tells this story well, in equal parts fantasy, mystery, and romance.
For me, a few of the supporting characters felt exaggerated, and the race to the finish line seemed abrupt, but I wasn’t disappointed. I enjoyed this story. As Tara and Anaya struggle to find the creature who devoured the Loch Ness Monster, and race to prevent the Lake Champlain Monster from being next, I appreciated Schuldenfrei’s deft touch with her descriptions. There were surprises along the way, and I found myself rooting for Tara and Anaya’s budding relationship.
I recommend Liminal Hearts. This is the first book of the Rules of Chaos series, and I look forward to reading what Sculdenfrei has in store for us in Book 2.
